Maison Lameloise

"Ah, Lameloise! Just saying the name makes the connoisseurs of Burgundy and beyond quiver with pleasure. It is impossible to summarise in a few lines the history of this institution which began its star-studded career in… hold on to your hats… 1926! But make no mistake: despite its advanced age, Lameloise does not deal in nostalgia. Eric Pras, who arrived to head up the establishment in 2009, sums it up in one sentence, which is almost a mantra: "Tradition is the future." Suffice to say, he has no intention of resting on his laurels. Faithful to the spirit of the place, as inspired as he is meticulous, the chef serenely turns out dishes that will knock your socks off, paying homage to the land (snails, Bresse poultry, Charolais beef, Morvan cazette), while remaining tuned into the zeitgeist. Very good selection of wines, especially by the glass. Expertly done." - Michelin Inspector

This is an amazing creative next level restaurant. It is locate the town of Chagny, France, in a charming square with a statue of a rooster. The best way to experience it is to do the tasting menu. Every dish is a work of art and yet also delicious. This is not an average restaurant, so save this one for a big special event. But savor it when you visit!

This was one of the best dinners of my life. It's not just about the food. It's a whole adventure, with a large team of professionals in their field working on it. It's worth every euro you pay for this dinner.

We have had lunch at Maison Lamolaise 3 times now, when we visited from Australia and each time it has been, without a doubt, wonderful in every way. I love that I am surprised by the beautiful flavour of each dish and I love that I enjoy things I thought I could never eat like snails and octopus and steak tartare. This time we really enjoyed the rabbit dish and the rhubarb dessert and the little dark chocolate petit four with a red or perhaps a black current inside. The head waiter, Anthony, helped me choose some lovely cheese by starting with what I knew I liked (Comte and Brie) and branching out from there. Patrick, the Maître D, was very warm, kind and professional. The two sommeliers Sebastian and someone whose name I can’t remember helped we choose two wines by the glass that were not too expensive - a chardonnay that was ‘complex’ not ‘fresh’ and a Pinot Noire without too much tannin. Lunch at a Michelin 3 star restaurant is expensive, but at Maison Lamolaise we are relaxed because we know we are in good hands.

The restaurant does not merit a Michelin three star. I’ve dined at over a dozen Michelin three star restaurants in France, Europe and NYC, but this was not up to par as an exceptional, memorable experience. The food and service were excellent but not at the highest level. We had the tasting menu (“degustation”) on a Thursday lunch. The best dishes were the amuses buches: beef tartar, local sausage, quail egg wrapped in bacon. The bread both croissant/brioche and country bread were excellent. The trout with milk mousse was innovative. The turbot was mini gnocchi was just fine. The tiny lamb chops were cute, but too small and served too cold. The granny smith apple juice was a refreshing second palette cleanser instead of the usual sweet sorbet. The caramel popcorn was perfect. Service was very good but not exceptional. We were in a windowless room, which was quiet and private though we would have preferred a view and better air flow.

I had a terrible experience with Maison Lameloise. They didn't cancel my reservation when I emailed them and they charged me almost 400 euros! I was excited to have lunch there with my wife and two kids. However, I was very concerned about the menu. For my kids, they were going to offer an a la carte option. For me and my wife, we were going to do the lunch menu. I inquired about the menu to confirm whether it was pigeon and snails. I told them that if it is, then I want to cancel my reservation. This was several days in advance of our reservation. They only responded with menus that were more than double the price higher and ignored my instructions to cancel the reservation if the menu only had pigeon and snails. When I finally didn't see any cancellation, I go onto to Fork and cancelled it, but they said I did it too late. I have emails telling them to cancel the reservation if it had that menu we didn't like and they ignored it so that they could charge me the cancellation fee. I pleaded my case nicely with the restaurant and they refused to be flexible even though it was there fault. They food may be good there, but their approach to customer service is terrible!

Google
The wine list was outstanding, of course. Extensive by the glass options featuring top Burgundy producers like Coche-Dury and Raveneau at half the market price. Menu had a focus on local ingredients and tradition (snail, frog, Bresse chicken, Bresse butter). The service team was passionate, hospitable, and made not a single mistake.

Google
If you are looking for a definitive 3-star countryside experience look no further than Maison Lameloise. Food is of the most excellent quality and a perfect mix of traditional cuisine and innovation. The fig desert was out of this world, as was all the many savory dishes that preceded it. An all night dining experience you’ll never forget. As the original Michelin guide states: “exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey.”

Google
Amazing (if pricey!) experience. Impeccable service and rooms with a great view from the suite. Keep your stomach very empty because the dinner in the restaurant is very excellent with sizable portions.

Yelp
We (5 of us) have a really nice 3 1/2 hour dinner here during our Burgundy trip. The staffs are friendly and really attentive service. Food are tasty with nice presentation. The escargot with octopus is quite amazing, tender and the cream sauce is not too heavy. For main course I order the sea bass with uni cream sauce, it's perfectly cook and the uni sauce is not overpowering the fish. All of us really enjoy our dinner and I would recommend this place if anyone is looking to have a nice dinner at Beaune!

Yelp
The service was excellent. I think they did put us in a smaller room, almost an alcove, with other English speakers - our little ghetto. Maybe the larger dining room is reserved for French speakers, I don't know. Speak good French when you make your reservation and see what happens! The cuisine was wonderful. There were higher highs versus medium highs, but nothing failed. The fish was superb. The cheese course is excellent - do not miss it. The plates are sort of small, but our lunch was quite plentiful, especially with the amuse bouches, dessert, rolls, and so forth. We left perfectly full. It's all about taste here; it's a place to focus the senses on each bite, especially the first. This is masterwork cuisine. I'm giving it four stars because for the price...some of the dishes were not absolutely, totally awesome. But some definitely were. They were also a little quick with the wine selection process. I was handed the voluminous list and then verbally presented with by-the-glass options. Had to make a very quick decision. It might have been nice to have a moment to think about it, which I suppose I could have asked for. In any case, the by-the-glass wines we had were perfectly fine; the Loire white was average, but the red Burgundy was good. The staff treated us very well and we had a great time. If we can amass enough money, we will be back someday I hope. It's definitely in the 2-3 Michelin Star class, no question.

Yelp
Three star Michelin restaurants are supposed to be life changing, and Lameloise lives up to the hype. The cuisine is formulated to complement the wines, which are all locale. Consequently, there were several excellent seafood dishes (not what you'd expected from a restaurant in the middle of the continent). The style is distinctly Burgundy: rich sauces poured table side. The shrimp with sea urchin frappe was the most exceptional dish. The most memorable, however, was the cheese course: the huge cart and generous cuts of French cheeses was over whelming. This was a most memorable meal.

Yelp
The only Michelin 3 star in Burgundy. Well worth the visit if you are in the area. The wine list shows great depth, and with a focus on burgundy wines. Lot of big names, prices are reasonable. Service was very sincere. I had the two course tasting. Ordered the foie gras as the first and lamb as the main. The timing of each dish came at perfection. highly recommended

Yelp
Fortunately we came to Maison Lameloise in Bourgogne within 3 weeks of our less-than-stellar visit to "The French Laundry" in Napa Valley ("Nice evening, but flawed" April 16, 2018). I might otherwise have suspected the authenticity of the Michelin star system. We were escorted into the salon for our aperitifs and to peruse the menu. We felt anything but rushed, or hungry, as we were tantalized by multiple appetizers and amuse-bouches. The most memorable of these, not only for its taste and texture, but for a recipe that is unfathomable to ever recreate at home, were foie gras mousse lollipops with a hint of coco. We were then seated in one of the several white and stone dining rooms, none with more than 4 -5 tables. Another amuse-bouche: quail eggs with mushroom broth. Along with that bright but sedate setting, there is something about the service and the music that transports you away from anything else on your mind. You cannot help but focus squarely on the food and wine. The St-Pierre fish was delicately prepared with an intoxicating sauce, sandwiched between thin slices of fois gras. Nice! The pink slice of roasted duck was accompanied by a small duck sausage. Or was it a warm duck pate? Not sure, but it was packed with the same flavor as the 'jus', which was made with cherry and 'poivre de cassis'. The sommelier became our polite and reserved friend. After decanting our Batard Montrachet, he properly rejected this expensive wine because it had just slightly turned premox (confirmed later by the wine expert at our table). Of course we then trusted him entirely to choose an accompaniment to our cheeses and table-side prepared dessert, and the resulting 2001 Grand Cru Gewurtzraminer was spectacular and worthy of the Zalto stemware to which it was poured. The experience was worth every euro and every moment we spent there. Lameloise should be on every foodie's bucket list.

Yelp
I wish i could it 5 stars but something was lacking in a few dishes. As most places in Burgundy, they rely heavily on their sauces to carry the taste and most of the time they do it with perfection. But the meal we had here was creative, unique, and very enjoyable. Ambiance is very quaint and quiet...just how I like it. So much food, so many bottles, I forgot how i left? Did i even pay? Enjoy the photos.

Yelp
Food gives very impressive presentation and taste although traditional. The Wine list offers relatively reasonable prices but has a variety of bottles especially from Burgundy. The trials of the matching between sea food and meat and of making sea food a good company for red wines should be highly evaluated.

Yelp
My reference meal: everything else that gets shovelled into my maw is judged against this (and found wanting). The service, wine list, menu, wine and food pairing, and of course the actual food is without fault. More than that, it is an exercise in trancendentalism. Every course of our tasting menu was extraordinary, but two stand out: the prawn risotto (never have 2 words failed to convey the wondrousness of a dish), and a stonkingly good dessert of pain d'epices with endive ice cream. Here endeth the superlatives.

Yelp
Been here four times over twenty five years. The first two times it was a Michelin three star and the last two times it was a two star. They went back to three stars again. Frankly, the last two times they were trying hard for the son to get his third star and he came up with new ideas and new dishes. We had the blue lobster which comes first as a cold dish and second as a hot dish. It's really good. But, given that it ended up being the most expensive entree they have, it should be good. I have noticed over the years that Bordeaux are cheap for restaurants of this type and I guess that's because it's in Burgundy. The Somelier asked me what I was looking for. I told him and he recommended a Chasagne Montrachet. I have found them to be out of balance to the acid side and I much prefer Puligny Montrachets. He told me he had tasted every wine in the celler and I took his advice. He of course was right. Delicious. They put a bottle of sixties Armagnac on the table with a glass for me. Nice people. Madame Lameloise made it possible for us to eat at Auberge d'lille in 1985 when we called every day from a three star and got turned down. Madame Lameloise explained that Marc Meno was her husband's best friend and a table would be no problem. I forgot to mention, we had had a 1949 DRC Richbourg the prior night at Lameloise. When I returned nineteen years later, I was sitting with my family when we saw each other and she came over to me and asked how I'd been? Not bad for 19 years. And that's who they are and their food shows their talent, caring and skill. This is a truly great restaurant that feels elegant and comfortable. It has rooms or you can stay in Beaune, about ten miles away.

Yelp
a true 3-michelin star place. Nice wine list, beautiful dish, "anything you wish" type of service. Makes my burgundy trip luxurious. notes to myself "must come back"

Yelp
Gastronaughties says A Michelin Three Star classical restaurant in the tiny hamlet of Chagny. Lock and load for what everyone claims will be special. Amuse bouche of melon in a cheese sauce with sesame oil. Wow!!! Langoustine grilled with crispy breadcrumbs and tartare of langoustine. Oh my ears and whiskers. Off the hook yummy. Tartare to die for. WINE - selection: Burgundy exceptional, Bordeaux and Champagne average, otherwise useless. - variety: Same. - value: Reasonable for Michelin Three Star - wine rating for Burgundy.

Yelp
All the appetizers were awesome. Standouts were the foie gras (so decadent and perfectly creamy bite) and escargot covered tomato. Soup was super umame and yummy, but egg was a little under seasoned. Weird grape thing was interesting but no idea what it was. The lobster dish was amazing. Great tomato and strawberry sauce. Crab was a bit bland, but the frozen tomato ice was great. Lobster Bon Bon kinda tasted like a good chicken nugget. Wine pairing wasn't good. Too close to dish. First fish dish was a little bland, but sauce and zucchini were awesome. Great wine pairing. Fish was just a bit dry and flavorless. Not bad. Just bland. Second fish dish was awesome. Amazing sauce. Amazing herb frites. Fish was full flavored but made so much better with sauce. This dish was outstanding. Probably the best pigeon I have ever had. Amazing rhubarb with gingerbread crust. The "pre dessert": Main cherry thing was meh. But plate of small bites was amazing. Desserts: Lemon dessert was $#&@ing amazing. Amazing lemon sorbet in a crazy sugar vase. Great lemon tart. Omg this was so good. Tart shell is so nice and savory sweet. Graham cracker crust. So tasty. Lemon sorbet is delicious with crisp candy shell. Peach thing was was less good. Just bland peach and super not sweet fennel. Good idea. Bad execution. The parting dessert bites were by far the worst dish. It was fine. Just boring. Good chocolate peanut butter thing. Other two were meh. This was our best overall meal of our trip. Great service makes a big difference.

Yelp
Seven years later, and I'm still dreaming about the meal that I ate here. Not to be missed if you are in Chagny and have the cash to spare. Amazing food, amazing location, amazing everything. I can honestly say this was the best meal I've ever had in a beautifully luxurious atmosphere.

Yelp
I had one of the finest and most memorable meals of my life here. We were a rather large group, so were given the private room which was just charming. The food was exciting and delicious and beautifully presented. Foie gras lollipops, gorgeously cooked poultry and meat, and three courses of dessert were the highlights of the evening. The servers were so kind and made some outstanding wine recommendations as well. If I had only one meal left, I would choose to go here!

Yelp
When I die and go to heaven, my first meal will be at a place just like Lameloise. It is perfection. A Temple of Food. I somewhat regret the other 5-star reviews I've ever given because this outshines all the rest.

Yelp
Excellent wine, service goes through the motions, food just good. Amazing cheese. I expected more from a 3 star. Got the fixe, best dish was the foie. It had this amazing carmelized layer.

Yelp
I was astonished to learn that Lameloise was the #1 Travelers'Choice 2013 restaurant. I've been there several times although admittedly not recently. It deserves its three Michelin stars and the food has always been excellent. However, when they get busy, it can a take a very long time to get through the meal -- extended waits between courses. My wife notes that the last time we ate there, she almost lost her appetite because of the amount of time it took to get one of the courses. Also, if the weather gets warm, while there is air-conditioning, it can get somewhat warm to the point of being slightly uncomfortable. We've eaten in many of France's top restaurants and there are others that we go back to instead of Lameloise. They all have two or three MIchelin stars but I haven't written reviews of them nor am I going to name them here because, frankly, Google, Yelp, and tripadvisor usage has gotten to the point where small restaurants and great finds in France have started to be overrun with foreign visitors with many being Americans. Recently, in a popular Paris restaurant, my wife and I resorted to talking to each other in French because we were surrounded by English speakers.
