The Maiz Project - Review - South Beach - Miami - The Infatuation

"Editor's note: Time Out Market has closed, but the Maíz Project is still operating around town. Check their Instagram for the latest info. Maíz Project is a vendor inside South Beach’s Time Out Market making really delicious (and unique) Venezuelan arepas. The arepas have a purplish color and are made with heirloom corn. Filling options include cheese, steak, mushroom, and there’s usually a weekly special too. These are much different than most Venezuelan arepas you'll find in Miami, and more expensive too (around $15). But they're really good and worth trying if you’re on a mission to eat every arepa variation available in Miami (which you should be). Also, get tequeños. Always get tequeños." - Ryan Pfeffer

The Best Things We Ate This Week - Miami - The Infatuation

"Steak Arepa I’m refreshing our guide to Miami pop-ups this week, so I stopped by J Wakefield (the unofficial home of the Miami pop-up) to try a new one: The Maiz Project. They’re outside Wakefield on Thursdays, cooking up some stellar arepas. My favorite was the steak, which came covered in a delicious chimichurri. The maize dough they used also created a thinner and crispier arepa than I’m used to - which made it a much more manageable (and delicious) bar snack." - Ryan Pfeffer, Carlos C Olaechea

Had the wonderful pleasure of meeting Richard (the chef), he took the time to explain to me about the ingridients he uses, you can feel the passion he has. Now the food, if you never had an arepa before and this is your first time, you'll be in love. In fact, no other arepa will be the same or reach the level of flavor these has. And if you had Arepas before, let me tell you, YOU HAVEN'T. This is the original recipe, and when you add Richard's ability into the mix, you get heaven. I'm Venezuelan and after I ate them, I felt I don't really know how to make an Arepa. I tried chicken, meat, and mushroom Arepas, the mushooms was a whole experience. Also tried the Elote and got a little angry because it was so delicious, I don't know why I had that reaction but I will definetly will eat another Elote soon. Please make sure to eat here. You won't regret it.

💯💯💯 best arepas I’ve ever tried. PERIOD. Authentic, no BS! The mushrooms and steak were to DIE for! The spot is at the time out market. Super friendly service. The relationship value for money it’s amazing. We will be back every week to try the rest of the menu.

Their arepas are different from what I know. I was expecting a fluffy soft arepa with the filling inside but instead got a brittle, hard crunchy toasty thing that in no way can hold whatever filling is inside. I will say my mushroom, avocado, cheese filling was delicious but for the price, it wasn't worth it.

I got the shrimp+avocado arepa and the elote. Both were fantastic! Edit: just tried the mushroom arepa. Wow! So good 😋😋😋

Absolutely DELICIOUS. Very satisfying portions with tons of flavor and clearly lots of passion and craft put into the preparation. Pro tip - get the elote with some friends and share amongst each other. Then my favorite arepas are the steak or the beef cheek - but truthfully, you can't go wrong with anything you order because rest assured it's being made with lots of focus and skill.

I don't understand the high praise for this place. It's a food court place (which is fine, overall nice place to sit down). BUT the arepas were tiny (under 4 inches in diameter), specially for that price. Also, they were served just luke warm. On the plus side, the ingredients used were good. Overall, I wouldn't go back.

Yelp
If I could move an establishment to my home town, this one would be it. The arepa was the most delicious one I have had. The arepa to the meat was soft and favorable. I really enjoyed all the layers of flavor in the arepa. Great service and highly recommend!

Yelp
Tried many arepas. This one not worthy folks. The arepa was just so stale. No flavor at all and too thing. Save your money.
