2025’s Best Bakeries Continued to Get Personal | Eater

"I found Majdal Bakery in Philadelphia to be a small, bright space that charms like home while Kenan Rabah presents flatbreads and pastries rooted in his hometown of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights, a region of Syria occupied by Israel since 1967. He serves safeha, fatayer, and basbousa alongside flatbreads topped with kashkawan cheese and halloumi and pockets of dough encasing sumac chicken that are brightened by a dunk in the bakery’s tart secret sauce. Pear fenugreek basbousa balances syrup-soaked semolina with labneh cremeaux, and tahini babka muffins evoke the nostalgia of nut-butter sandwiches, all framed by old family photos that connect the food to a fraught, personal history." - Nicole Fellah

The Best Bakeries In Philadelphia - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Majdal started as a pop-up, selling everything from stunning cherry and labneh tarts to savory, buttery borekas at Her Place and Herman’s Coffee. But at its permanent home in Queen Village, you’ll find locals lining up at the tiny shop for the delightfully gooey Turkish eggs in a sourdough boat, or taking the shredded sumac chicken borek with an herby aioli home for lunch (there are just a few seats if you want to eat in). We love the flatbreads that have a tangy, slightly chewy sourdough base, as well as the green olive and cheese borek. But if you’re looking to wow with dessert, it’s all about the delicate layered tarts, which come in seasonal flavors like pumpkin, maple, and labneh." - candis mclean, alison kessler

The Newest Restaurants In Philadelphia

"This Middle Eastern bakery in Queen Village is serving savory pastries, like olive and cheese borekas, along with sweets, like a tahini, maple, and pecan babka, Thursday through Sunday. Based on Instagram, they’re all gorgeous. We checked out Majdal and added it to our Hit List." - candis mclean, alison kessler

The Best New Restaurants in Philly, March 2025

"Philly’s popular Middle Eastern pop-up Majdal Bakery found a permanent home for its sweet-and-savory goods in December 2024. The standalone store in the hip Queen Village neighborhood sends out standouts like shakshuka flatbreads engineered with lots of za’atar, tahini-maple babka muffins (or whole loaves), and filling fatayer pies stuffed with sumac chicken, plus pours from Herman’s Coffee." - Nadia Chaudhury

Google
WRITIING IN CAPS BECAUSE IM NOT CAPPIN. This is a MUSE of Syrian owned bakery. I don’t know where to start tbh. I order like the while menú lol. I first asked em about their Baklava box, I believe the owner who was working at time told me they were out but asked one of the workers is that a Baklava you are making?? Without any hestancy he delivered!!! This hardworking gentlemen in the oven for a few seconds to really bring out the moisture in the pastry, while maintaining the crisp on the outside. The baklava were incredibly delicious , honestly one of the best , if not BEST that have tasted the palate. A beautiful assortment diving into Almond, Pistachio and Walnut. Nirvanaaaa Okai so what i tried, first the Shishito Turkish Egg Safeha. Did no research, but looks 9.5/10. This baby is like the cousin of the Shakshuka. Was sus about the mixing of the yogurt and eggs at first but the ooaching eggs over a bed of garlicky yogurt, then topping was perfectly warmed, spiced butter and adding charred shishito peppers for flavor poppin my palate. Savory wish i was bewteen the Cinnamon Cardamom Bun or the Pistachio Tiramisú, they ran out of the tiramisú, so it left me with no choice. This baby was unique w/ their babka dough, filled with cinnamon cardamom and topped with pistachio cream cheese frosting. You love about traditional cinnamon buen, but taken up a notch. Soft & fluffy the flight and pistachio adds an amazing depth of flavor to both the filling and the cream cheese icing. It’s not hard to appease my brother but he gave high praise for the Malfouf Safeha and his spiced tea. Mark of approval. The Spice Cider was a nice compliment to all the dishes, a nice balance of SWEET apple cider infused perfumes with clover spices, cozy and nice kick of cinnamon of a beautiful fall afternoon I can't wait to try everything else. Very humbling staff, passionate and willing to give suggestions of their favs or if you werent familiar with Syrian Baked goods. I've truly enjoyed everything I've had from Majdal. It takes a talented baker to be able to execute so highly on such a wide variety of pastries, from leavened bread products (both sweet and savory) to beautiful, delicate tarts to tender.

Google
A homey little bakery with a unique selection of sweet and savory goods. I tried two items: 1. Chicken sumac fatayer: nicely seasoned, dough was soft and fluffy. Unfortunately, the chicken was quite dry. Fortunately, the sauce made up for it. 8/10 (if the chicken was tender it would be a 10) 2. Cherry hazelnut babka: lovely texture, moist without feeling under-baked. Good chocolatey flavor and cherry chunks. However, the sweetness was a bit overwhelming. I felt like the sugar could be reduced because it masked some of the base flavors. 7/10 Would come again to try other items! (Also the interior is very tastefully decorated!)

Google
This bakery is amazing!! Their baked goods were delicious. I loved all the savory options. The sweet pastries were not too sweet and a perfect combination of flavors. I will be coming back for sure. The overall cafe vibes were also very cute. Only downside is that it is a little small and it can get busy on the weekends. You must stop by!

Google
Flavorful and healthy savory pastries and rich but not-to-sweet baked goods. I was in heaven! The owner and staff are all so sweet. I had to get a bunch of sweets to-go to bring back home to NYC.

A couple of my friends and I came here on a Saturday morning after learning our original plans for breakfast were closed and were blown away by Majdal Bakery! The flavors were full and well balanced, the textures were exquisite, and the environment was very pleasant! We had the Chicken Sumac Fatayer, Chicken Shawarma Sammie, Turkish Eggs Safeha, Cherry Labneh Tart, and Cinnamon Cardamom Bun. There are a few small tables and we were early enough to snag seats before a small line formed, but this could easily be a go-to spot for grabbing some things to take away. We all look forward to going back and trying more!

Google
I stumbled upon this place and I am stoked about it. I will be telling everyone I know to try this bakery! I had the Harrisa Eggplant Safeha and the iced rose sharab. The Safeha was savory and so tasty. The Sharab was refreshing but a little on the sweet side for me but I’m not really a sugar girl. I cannot wait to try their other offerings.

Google
This is an AMAZING bakery full of many very unique sweet goods, this was a great find that I can't recommend enough everything I had was so delicious the inside has such a good vibe and it's located perfectly around everything cool in South st area. Definitely visit here.

Yelp
Thank you. What a surprising treat for breakfast. Savory and sweet options. I got one of each The bread looks amazing. The tahini, pecan, maple babka was delicious. The pastures are expertly made. Super friendly.

Yelp
This bakery is a wonderful Syrian and Syrian owned bakery in the city! They have delicious pastries and great prices for them. I got one of the labneh Safehas (can't remember exactly which one!) which was pretty good, but the pistachio cardamom bun was absolutely one of the top desserts I've had! They sell a lot of bread as well which smelled so good! Would highly recommend if you're craving middle eastern pastries !

Yelp
The last time I visited Majdal, I braved crossing Broad Street during the Eagles victory parade. But I was determined because Majdal's pastries are worth it! The staff have all been super friendly and helpful in making suggestions when I've visited. The bakery space is intimate, with a few tables, including two located in the sun-soaked window - the perfect location to snap a beautiful photo of your pastry. I've truly enjoyed everything I've had from Majdal. It takes a talented baker to be able to execute so highly on such a wide variety of pastries, from leavened bread products (both sweet and savory) to beautiful, delicate tarts to tender, moist basbousa. So far, my favorite savory pastry has been the chicken sumac fatayer, which is served with a super tasty, creamy yellow sauce, and my favorite sweet pastry has been the pistachio tart from the Valentines Day tart trio special. Majdal also does occasional pop-ups around Philly, so even if you can't make it down to their Headhouse/South Street location, keep an eye on their social media to see where they'll pop up next!

Yelp
No idea why it took me so long but hello to my new favorite bakery and even closer than machine shop Philly or mighty bread in south Philly. These guys sell the best tasting baguette so far in the city at a reasonable price too! Hurry and get your bread before their lines are out the door and around the block. They use just a normal pizza style electric oven ? Not the wood burning style but still I loved my baguette. Last night sliced up and thrown in the iron grill with butter, rosemary, garlic essence-after I took my steaks off. Toasted nicely, press with aioli a d grilled onions and topped with steak. Love their sourdough breads and also all the treats. Enjoyed both hot pockets- cabbage and potato with tzatziki style dip.

Yelp
Third visit to this neighborhood gem and this time everything lived up to expectations, from the crusty baguette to the unctuous baklava. But, the star of the day was the Pear Baboush, a moist almond cake singing with warm notes of cardamom and cinnamon, topped with creamy labneh, juicy pears, and crispy kataifi. Magic in every bite.

Yelp
Amazing Syrian bakery! Wide assortments of pastries (both savoury and sweet). The space is rather small for dining so if you want to dine in go there on the earlier side. My daughter lived in Beirut for close to a year and there are many Syrians there also. She said the flavour reminded her of Beirut. We tried different pastries, and seriously, they are all worth trying. I cannot say which one is my favourite because they all tasted so good! We even brought back some pastries home and enjoyed them. Hoping and praying this bakery stays in business a very long time

Yelp
I saw this place advertised on (yes to the few who read my reviews regularly, you guessed it) TooGoodToGo. While I haven't had the fortune of winning an offering yet, I wanted to try this place real bad because of the ratings on TooGoodToGo, here, and I only know of this Levantine bakery and another pop-up. It is nice to be able to have a piece of a culture I am unfamiliar with and sadly would not feel comfortable traveling to such countries alone or not through a reputable tour company. Wish I could travel more but a place like this is the next best thing. With the prevalence of world events and issues without getting too into it, I feel like more Levantine places are increasing in number because food is a great invisible "language" to connect w others and it just shows how human we all really are. And plus this bakery is just a winner!! The spiced tea has a strong spice flavor that I personally love. Those rose tea has a good strength for me too. For those of you who do not like stronger flavors, maybe stick with something more typical to mainstream US I would guess. I finally talked about the food, lol. The following day, they had an event for making their first pizza ever for the public. The toppings of potato and the type of sausage they used were different than I'd ever had for a pizza but worked well. The tomato slice I had was cold but the sauce was very tasty. I would've preferred it heated but maybe they serve it this way. Yours truly, random food snob trying to stay hydrated.

Yelp
My family loved this spot. They got a coffee which was delicious, as well as the rose water drink which was certainly unique. They found the assortment of baked goods to be exciting compared to your average cookie-cutter Starbucks array. Tahini-rye brownies, for example, is not something you see very often! They're excited to go back and try more.

Yelp
The Middle Eastern girl in me loved this unique spin on some of my favorite pastries. This was the start of a mini bakery tour we self curated and I loved it! Chocolate hazelnut babka and cinnamon cardamom bun are .

Yelp
Gone here a couple times and the food is always consistent! The staff is patient and are always down to chat about anything on the menu. I love the plants and the clear passion for baking. The prices are reasonable and i Will keep coming back!

Yelp
My friend and I got pastries to go from Majdal to eat outside on a beautiful Sunday morning, and the food was amazing! We got 3 things to split: Harissa Eggplant Safeha (flatbread filled with roasted eggplant and harissa filling, topped with preserved lemons, herbs, & walnuts), Potato Fatayer (flatbread stuffed with potato, onion, and spices, served with an herby sour cream sauce), and a Cardamom Cinnamon Bun topped with pistachio cream cheese frosting. While all three were delicious, the cardamom cinnamon bun was the standout! I'm already looking forward to my return visit to try out all the other mouth-watering flavored pastries.

Yelp
Delicious baked goods! Very friendly and approachable guy at the counter - I think he is the owner of the bakery. I am so glad to have a bakery that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also serves mouth watering food. We tried the Pistachio Tart, Chocolate Hazelnut Bourbon Babka, Lemon Poppy pie and I would highly recommend getting all of these. My favorite was the Pistachio tart!

Yelp
I don't remember everything we tried, but this was such a wonderful experience trying all these middle eastern Baked goods!! My favorite was a carrot one the staff recommended, which was delicious. Everything tasted super fresh. They have a few small tables inside to sit

Yelp
This place was so good! The decor is so pretty and the food is equally as good! We got some the iced rose sharab as well and it was delicious. Had to grab a box of baklava too!!

Bassem S.

Yelp
This bakery is a work of art. I've had the tahini babka and the hazelnut babka and they were both amazing. For true delight, ask them to heat the pastry in the oven for a few seconds to really bring out the moisture in the pastry, while maintaining the crisp on the outside. The bakbas were incredibly delicious and I can't wait to try everything else on the menu, both sweet and savory. The baguettes look legit and I'm sure they would go great with some fancy cheese from the Italian market. The owner and the people who work there are delightful. Majdal is a great addition to the neighborhood and I wish them all the success in the world.

Yelp
Saw this place had opened and wanted to check it out. I got the chicken sumac fatayer which they heated for me and I enjoyed it while sitting at a window table. The ambiance is nice and the staff was friendly. I also ordered a few things to go. The lemon poppy has Pisa is pictured. That's very dense and soaked in a syrup. It was tasty, but not sure I could eat the whole thing. The cashier told me her favorites were the chocolate babka and the carrot safeha so I got this to try later.

Yelp
Majdal Bakery serves authentic middle eastern baked goodies and as a middle eastern person, my heart is happy. Most of their baked goods are savory which I LOVE! We got the chicken sumac burek, cheese & greens burek, potato pie, and more delicious items. You can tell everything is made with love and I look forward to having my lunches here.

Yelp
What a hidden gem! So many savory and sweet pastries that are delectable! It's so cute inside with lots of pictures which makes the place so homely. Couldn't recommend it more!!!! Go try it!

Yelp
This is the shop I have been waiting to find and the review I have been wanting to write for so long! I came here after seeing a photo on Eater and I am so thankful I stopped in. Immediately you are met with light and greenery with flowers and plants all over. You feel a sense of happiness walking in and this place gives the phrase "hole in the wall" a definition. I haven't been to a place in so long where I actually had trouble choosing what to try. I ended up picking the chicken sumac fatayer, the chickpea safeha and a butter and fig jam bread. They chicken sumac item was fantastic. It was similar to an empanada, but was so savory and delicious with a fantastic dipping sauce. The spiced tea was also homemade and perfectly seasoned. So impressed with my experience here, but just know, it is a bit pricey so choose your items wisely. I would definitely skip the butter and jam item and get two of the chicken items next time!

Marissa C.

Yelp
Service and food were good but not much seating space and very hot in the space. Also bummed they didn't have more coffee options. I had the maple tahini babka. It wasn't super flavorful.

Sarah L.

Yelp
Everything i've had here is sooooo delicious. I'm particularly partial to the savory pastries!! Yum

L.A. A.

Yelp
This place is extraordinary, probably the highest quality bakery I've encountered in the US, and I've traveled extensively. The bakery offers creative versions of sweet and savor baked goods inspired by traditional Levantine recipes. I tried a couple when I visited in the morning, and took a sampling home to have later in the day--and they still tasted remarkably fresh. The service was prompt and friendly, and the ambiance was welcoming and pleasant. I ordered the tahini, maple, & pecan babka (muffin), the chickpea shawarma safeha (open face savory pie), the potato fatayer (hand pie), the cabbage fatayer, the greens, cheese, & olive borek (savory pastry), and the pistachio tart. Bottom line: the baker is an artist. This place is not to be missed. Will make sure to visit on my next trip to Philly.

Yelp
I had one of the best loaves of sourdough ever last Saturday. We devoured the entire loaf in one day. It was delicious. Loved the crust. I wish we lived closer to come by every day. Thanks for opening your bakery in Queen Village and I look forward to dropping by again.

Katherine H.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! I tried two savory pastries and loved them both. A true asset to the neighborhood.

Ann O.

Yelp
Came here after seeing a story about them on the news. Food lived up to the hype. I like that there are a lot of savory pastries. The Turkish egg flatbread was the highlight of my first trip. Will have to come back to try everything else!

Mark P.

Yelp
Food is delicious and unique. I have been a regular customer last season at the Germantown Farmers Market and am looking forward to visiting the store.
