The Best Bakeries In Philadelphia

"Majdal started as a pop-up, selling everything from stunning cherry and labneh tarts to savory, buttery borekas at Her Place and Herman’s Coffee. But at its permanent home in Queen Village, you’ll find locals lining up at the tiny shop for the delightfully gooey Turkish eggs in a sourdough boat, or taking the shredded sumac chicken borek with an herby aioli home for lunch (there are just a few seats if you want to eat in). We love the flatbreads that have a tangy, slightly chewy sourdough base, as well as the green olive and cheese borek. But if you’re looking to wow with dessert, it’s all about the delicate layered tarts, which come in seasonal flavors like pumpkin, maple, and labneh." - candis mclean, alison kessler

"This Middle Eastern bakery in Queen Village is serving savory pastries, like olive and cheese borekas, along with sweets, like a tahini, maple, and pecan babka, Thursday through Sunday. Based on Instagram, they’re all gorgeous. We checked out Majdal and added it to our Hit List." - candis mclean, alison kessler

The Best New Restaurants in Philly, March 2025

"Philly’s popular Middle Eastern pop-up Majdal Bakery found a permanent home for its sweet-and-savory goods in December 2024. The standalone store in the hip Queen Village neighborhood sends out standouts like shakshuka flatbreads engineered with lots of za’atar, tahini-maple babka muffins (or whole loaves), and filling fatayer pies stuffed with sumac chicken, plus pours from Herman’s Coffee." - Nadia Chaudhury

This bakery is amazing!! Their baked goods were delicious. I loved all the savory options. The sweet pastries were not too sweet and a perfect combination of flavors. I will be coming back for sure. The overall cafe vibes were also very cute. Only downside is that it is a little small and it can get busy on the weekends. You must stop by!

The Middle Eastern girl in me loved this unique spin on some of my favorite pastries. This was the start of a mini bakery tour we self curated and I loved it! Chocolate hazelnut babka and cinnamon cardamom bun are 🤌🏼.

A couple of my friends and I came here on a Saturday morning after learning our original plans for breakfast were closed and were blown away by Majdal Bakery! The flavors were full and well balanced, the textures were exquisite, and the environment was very pleasant! We had the Chicken Sumac Fatayer, Chicken Shawarma Sammie, Turkish Eggs Safeha, Cherry Labneh Tart, and Cinnamon Cardamom Bun. There are a few small tables and we were early enough to snag seats before a small line formed, but this could easily be a go-to spot for grabbing some things to take away. We all look forward to going back and trying more!

Well done! The chocolate cherry babka is a nice try, and not too sweet. The basbusa is also well executed (but yes, this is way sweeter than I like). What I enjoyed the most though, and I had to try it because the first two rounds were good, was the talami with Butter and jam (It reminded me of an Italian sweetbread done with anise). They have a lot of savory items so I definitely need to come back. The place is cozy with 5-6 tables.

Smells, feels and tastes just like home. The pastries are so elevated yet simple and authentic. The staff are so friendly and welcoming and kind. You can taste the quality of each ingredient and topping, and I can’t wait to be back again and again for a taste of home!

Google
Majdal Bakery in Philadelphia brings the rich, soulful flavors of Druze and Levantine flavors to Queen’s Village. The chicken sumac fatayer was my favorite, filled with juicy, spice-kissed chicken and paired with a tangy yellow sauce. The tomato labneh safeha provided a refreshing contrast, blending creamy yogurt with bright, juicy tomatoes on a perfectly crisp flatbread. A heartier option was the Turkish eggs safeha that consisted of herbed yogurt and a soft egg atop warm dough, creating a savory dish. And to finish, we shared a pistachio cinnamon muffin that added the right touch of sweetness—nutty, fragrant, and very satisfying. This is a bakery to bring your friends and family for a unique experience.

Absolutely divine! We just happened to pop in while walking around … because I cannot resist a middle eastern bakery! My husband and I agree that the pastries are the best we have had! My favorite is the cinnamon cardamom bun- the whipped pistachio cream— it is like no other topping I’ve tasted… so light and not too sweet. We live in Washington DC and brought back a box of babkas but will definitely be back to try some of the savory treats!

Yelp
No idea why it took me so long but hello to my new favorite bakery and even closer than machine shop Philly or mighty bread in south Philly. These guys sell the best tasting baguette so far in the city at a reasonable price too! Hurry and get your bread before their lines are out the door and around the block. They use just a normal pizza style electric oven ? Not the wood burning style but still I loved my baguette. Last night sliced up and thrown in the iron grill with butter, rosemary, garlic essence-after I took my steaks off. Toasted nicely, press with aioli a d grilled onions and topped with steak. Love their sourdough breads and also all the treats. Enjoyed both hot pockets- cabbage and potato with tzatziki style dip.

Yelp
The last time I visited Majdal, I braved crossing Broad Street during the Eagles victory parade. But I was determined because Majdal's pastries are worth it! The staff have all been super friendly and helpful in making suggestions when I've visited. The bakery space is intimate, with a few tables, including two located in the sun-soaked window - the perfect location to snap a beautiful photo of your pastry. I've truly enjoyed everything I've had from Majdal. It takes a talented baker to be able to execute so highly on such a wide variety of pastries, from leavened bread products (both sweet and savory) to beautiful, delicate tarts to tender, moist basbousa. So far, my favorite savory pastry has been the chicken sumac fatayer, which is served with a super tasty, creamy yellow sauce, and my favorite sweet pastry has been the pistachio tart from the Valentines Day tart trio special. Majdal also does occasional pop-ups around Philly, so even if you can't make it down to their Headhouse/South Street location, keep an eye on their social media to see where they'll pop up next!

Yelp
Amazing Syrian bakery! Wide assortments of pastries (both savoury and sweet). The space is rather small for dining so if you want to dine in go there on the earlier side. My daughter lived in Beirut for close to a year and there are many Syrians there also. She said the flavour reminded her of Beirut. We tried different pastries, and seriously, they are all worth trying. I cannot say which one is my favourite because they all tasted so good! We even brought back some pastries home and enjoyed them. Hoping and praying this bakery stays in business a very long time

Yelp
My family loved this spot. They got a coffee which was delicious, as well as the rose water drink which was certainly unique. They found the assortment of baked goods to be exciting compared to your average cookie-cutter Starbucks array. Tahini-rye brownies, for example, is not something you see very often! They're excited to go back and try more.

Yelp
I saw this place advertised on (yes to the few who read my reviews regularly, you guessed it) TooGoodToGo. While I haven't had the fortune of winning an offering yet, I wanted to try this place real bad because of the ratings on TooGoodToGo, here, and I only know of this Levantine bakery and another pop-up. It is nice to be able to have a piece of a culture I am unfamiliar with and sadly would not feel comfortable traveling to such countries alone or not through a reputable tour company. Wish I could travel more but a place like this is the next best thing. With the prevalence of world events and issues without getting too into it, I feel like more Levantine places are increasing in number because food is a great invisible "language" to connect w others and it just shows how human we all really are. And plus this bakery is just a winner!! The spiced tea has a strong spice flavor that I personally love. Those rose tea has a good strength for me too. For those of you who do not like stronger flavors, maybe stick with something more typical to mainstream US I would guess. I finally talked about the food, lol. The following day, they had an event for making their first pizza ever for the public. The toppings of potato and the type of sausage they used were different than I'd ever had for a pizza but worked well. The tomato slice I had was cold but the sauce was very tasty. I would've preferred it heated but maybe they serve it this way. Yours truly, random food snob trying to stay hydrated.

Yelp
Delicious baked goods! Very friendly and approachable guy at the counter - I think he is the owner of the bakery. I am so glad to have a bakery that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also serves mouth watering food. We tried the Pistachio Tart, Chocolate Hazelnut Bourbon Babka, Lemon Poppy pie and I would highly recommend getting all of these. My favorite was the Pistachio tart!

Yelp
What a hidden gem! So many savory and sweet pastries that are delectable! It's so cute inside with lots of pictures which makes the place so homely. Couldn't recommend it more!!!! Go try it!

Yelp
I don't remember everything we tried, but this was such a wonderful experience trying all these middle eastern Baked goods!! My favorite was a carrot one the staff recommended, which was delicious. Everything tasted super fresh. They have a few small tables inside to sit

Yelp
I've been to this new bakery twice since they opened. My first experience was excellent. Their chickpea shakshuka and a round loaf of freshly baked za'atar bread could not have been better. I've made attempts to return since then, but have frequently found them to be closed after running out of food. That's a great thing for a restaurant, but not a great thing for people traveling to eat at the spot during their posted business hours. I was in luck today and found them open just before noon on a Sunday. I decided to try a sweet option this time. I chose the Sour Cherry Basbousa, which looked like an item in a french patisserie, complete with toasted coconut and a fresh flower on top, next to a small cherry. Sadly, the taste did not live up to the image. The basbousa was utterly flavorless, which is hard to do in a dessert. I could see the cherries, but they were not sour or juicy and would not be mistaken for a cherry if your eyes were closed. The white icing and filling was perfectly piped and smooth, but had no flavor. Similarly the two cake layers were bland, although nicely cooked. In fairness, this dessert is new to the menu. So, they may be experimenting. If that's the case, I hope the bakers take my feedback to heart. I would love to give them another try - when I find them open.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! I tried two savory pastries and loved them both. A true asset to the neighborhood.

Yelp
Saw this place had opened and wanted to check it out. I got the chicken sumac fatayer which they heated for me and I enjoyed it while sitting at a window table. The ambiance is nice and the staff was friendly. I also ordered a few things to go. The lemon poppy has Pisa is pictured. That's very dense and soaked in a syrup. It was tasty, but not sure I could eat the whole thing. The cashier told me her favorites were the chocolate babka and the carrot safeha so I got this to try later.

Yelp
Majdal Bakery serves authentic middle eastern baked goodies and as a middle eastern person, my heart is happy. Most of their baked goods are savory which I LOVE! We got the chicken sumac burek, cheese & greens burek, potato pie, and more delicious items. You can tell everything is made with love and I look forward to having my lunches here.

Yelp
This place was so good! The decor is so pretty and the food is equally as good! We got some the iced rose sharab as well and it was delicious. Had to grab a box of baklava too!!

Yelp
This is the shop I have been waiting to find and the review I have been wanting to write for so long! I came here after seeing a photo on Eater and I am so thankful I stopped in. Immediately you are met with light and greenery with flowers and plants all over. You feel a sense of happiness walking in and this place gives the phrase "hole in the wall" a definition. I haven't been to a place in so long where I actually had trouble choosing what to try. I ended up picking the chicken sumac fatayer, the chickpea safeha and a butter and fig jam bread. They chicken sumac item was fantastic. It was similar to an empanada, but was so savory and delicious with a fantastic dipping sauce. The spiced tea was also homemade and perfectly seasoned. So impressed with my experience here, but just know, it is a bit pricey so choose your items wisely. I would definitely skip the butter and jam item and get two of the chicken items next time!

Yelp
This place is extraordinary, probably the highest quality bakery I've encountered in the US, and I've traveled extensively. The bakery offers creative versions of sweet and savor baked goods inspired by traditional Levantine recipes. I tried a couple when I visited in the morning, and took a sampling home to have later in the day--and they still tasted remarkably fresh. The service was prompt and friendly, and the ambiance was welcoming and pleasant. I ordered the tahini, maple, & pecan babka (muffin), the chickpea shawarma safeha (open face savory pie), the potato fatayer (hand pie), the cabbage fatayer, the greens, cheese, & olive borek (savory pastry), and the pistachio tart. Bottom line: the baker is an artist. This place is not to be missed. Will make sure to visit on my next trip to Philly.

Yelp
Came here after seeing a story about them on the news. Food lived up to the hype. I like that there are a lot of savory pastries. The Turkish egg flatbread was the highlight of my first trip. Will have to come back to try everything else!

Yelp
Food is delicious and unique. I have been a regular customer last season at the Germantown Farmers Market and am looking forward to visiting the store.
