Malek Egyptian Cuisine (organic, gluten & seed oil free)

Went for the first time after 7v7. Accidentally opened the wrong door and was told it’s only pick up. Ordered. Food took 10-15 mins. Bro came out dropped off my food and even threw in some fried garlic with my meal. Said “this is my favorite”. Ate the food after a 20 min ride home and it was so good! Exactly what was advertised.

Very kind and considerate staff, great food. Celiac safe with vegan options. They are open late which is another bonus if you have dietary restrictions but want to order take out.

Highly recommend this spot. I had the Mac Feast and it was delicious with so much flavor. I’m picky about meat and this was very high quality ingredients. I will definitely be back. You can also feel good about supporting a great locally owned business.

I got stranded in Portland because my flight got canceled, and when I say stranded, I mean, I got to stay at a lovely hotel and have food from this absolutely wonderful restaurant. I got to my hotel after midnight and they were open. I got the mofu tofu (koshari) which was also vegan, gluten and dairy free. The crispy onions on top made it perfection. I also had the date balls. They were truly delicious, a wonderful texture, and full of the lovely complex flavor of many spices. The portions were very generous

I can not say enough good about this place. The food is ALWAYS hot and fresh. It’s very tasty. I have always been greeted with a friendly smile and thanked for my business. It’s easy to order and my orders have always been ready and correct. I had no idea what Egyptian food was like and I am so glad I found this place. But beyond that, the ingredients are clearly selected carefully. Grass fed meat and organic food. The pasta is outstanding for gluten free and the garbanzo beans are outstanding. I don’t think they are coming out of a can. Awesome place! — let me not forget to mention the date balls, fresh! Not too sweet. I get them every time.

We have ordered from Malek 8X in the last 12 months. Every single time the food has been delicious. This evening we had a mishap with the paper bag. I know the owner takes great care to package the food but sometimes containers fail. I ordered the lentil soup along with Chicken Lala. Without going into all the details I will say this. The owner was not obligated to do anything other than provide the original order. He went above and beyond, although I’m certain the encounter perturbed him. I am extremely thankful for the 5 star service and the high quality flavorful meal to sustain me through a long work night. Thank you.

I love the food. I always get the shrimp dish . I love that it's wild and gluten free and everything is organic . The spices and extra sauces to add when you get home are amazing . This is my go to when I don't want to cook.

Went to Malek Egyptian cuisine for a late dinner with 3 other people on a weekday in Portland and wow what an experience! We got the grand koshari and the grand mac with steak and we couldn't have asked for a better meal. Confirmed to have clean ingredients and made with love as confirmed by the staff who went out of their way to bring us water (while sitting outside) and our food to the picnic tables close by Would highly recommend this for anyone visiting for great unique halal food, I would come back without hesitation!

Ordered the Mac Lala and it was delicious. You do have to order in advance and call when you want to pick up. It appears to be take-out only. There is a picnic area outside you could sit at but otherwise no dining area. I definitely would order again. Love that this is 100% gluten free restaurant. The food was a great twist from regular mac n cheese.

Extremely rude customer service. The service was so bad that I left before receiving the food. The cook was very aggressive

We stumbled upon this place on Uber Eats while we were stuck in a hotel during icepocalypse 2024. We were looking for a place with celiac-safe options and were surprised Egyptian food fit the criteria! I got the vegan tofu option and was mostly surprised at how perfectly cooked the gluten-free macaroni noodles were! The koshari was also delicious! I do wish there was more eco-friendly packaging- lots of plastic containers with little plastic cups for all the toppings and sauces.

While I only give 3.25 stars, I do think it's great that Malek Egyptian cuisine exists. The plain fact that you can get koshary in Portland in and of itself is fantastic. I tend to feel a little differently than others about the options and admittedly prefer koshary absolutely doused in tomato sauce so take this with a grain of salt. The entirety of koshary is present here - all the ingredients you expect including fresh lentils, fried onion, pasta, tomato sauce and vinegar are all here. I ordered mine with extra tomato sauce but I think my preferred style would probably need about 3-4 orders of the tomato sauce. For example, at Koshary Abou Tarek in Cairo, you can ladle an enormous amount of tomato sauce and fried onions onto your order. Does that possibly miss the point? Perhaps. Is it absolutely delicious that way? Yes. So part of this might be that I just need to get better at perfecting my order at Malek. I also ordered the PDX Mac and cheese and that was somewhat disappointing. I added avocado and think it didn't add anything to the order. Sure, it was a fresh avocado half, but it just didn't really add any dimension. The organic cheese upgrade similarly felt unnecessary. That said, the sausage they serve is GREAT. I'd definitely splurge on extra sausage here. Overall, admittedly with some partial user error, I had hoped for a more saucy dish with satisfying crunch from fried onions. It's still absolutely amazing that they are bringing koshary to Portland and that is reason alone to at least recommend a visit.

Open late, and soooo delicious it's exactly what you need after a night out. Tasty wholesome eats! I normally don't buy organic or anything but damn I feel like I could taste the difference and I might start now, clean deliciousness. Definitely recommend. My lala chicken tasted like the hearty part of minestrone soup. So yummy and warmed my soul. Idk that I've had Egyptian food before but I'll be back!!! Thank you!

YUM! Comfort food at its best - plus it's gluten free! We ate this healthy, delicious, vegan meal from this amazing restaurant, and it is my new craving. It's everything you want in mujadara, with the lentils, rice and friend onions. plus pasta and your favorite toppings. It is so freaking good. The homemade tomato sauce is delicious. Try it! You will love it.

It is the real Kushari with a lot of Egyptian spices, Clean a nice service. Plus the food is delicious.

I had the King Koshari with the salmon. Absolutely incredible! The fried garlic and pumpkins seeds went perfect with it, as did the tomato and garlic sauce. The salmon was juicy, everything perfectly seasoned. It was just what I was craving. I called to see if they were still open and they worked with my husband and I to make sure he got the order at so close to closing. They were very kind to help us. Amazing food and staff, will definitely eat there again!

This place takes mac n cheese to a totally different level! Seriously- run, don't walk to this place! Mac Lala is unreal good. If I could give more stars, I would. So yummy!

Never tried Egyptian food before and absolutely LOVED it! Tried koshari, Mac PDX, and "date me" dessert - definitely going to eat here more often now that I've tried it. If you've never had Egyptian either, I would say maybe it's like baked ziti meets jambalaya? Beefy mac but classy and with vegetarian options? Something like that... just try it, you'll love it!
