"One look at the menu—chicken tenders, chili cheese fries, hot dogs, burgers—and it’s clear Mutt’s really knows its customer: The little take-out stand is located just steps from the Malibu Country Mart’s adorable playground. It’s kid food at its best, and for mom and dad there are veggie burgers and a solid falafel wrap (also comes in salad form). There’s no designated seating area, so grab your order and find a shady bench or picnic table; there are plenty throughout the mart."

Been coming here for over 35yr. This place has been here for over that. The food has stayed consistent throughout those years. And that’s saying something. I can come here and always know what I order is going to have the same excellent quality as it always does. Here are my top orders. Vegetarian falafel. Perfectly seasoned and crafted falafels. Wrapped into a pita with yogurt sauce, lettuce and tomato. Very simple yet absolutely delicious and fresh. Cheddar melt burger. Pretty good sized burger. Meet is seasoned well. Cheese is in fact melted lol. This burger definitively isn’t lacking in flavor. Fries. Their thick cut fries are from the same distributor as Malibu Seafood. If you ever are craving them. And you’ve been there. You know how good they are. Check this place out and enjoy!

Came from out of town and heard this was hidden gem place. There’s no real atmosphere and the food isn’t even fun in a greasy way. $8.25 to add awful unseasoned, hard steak fries. There’s nothing charming or endearing here. Just a visage of how burger places were 50 years ago, and not in a good way.

My daughter loves their cheeseburger and the chubby fries. Their turkey burger is yummy too. You can also call ahead to place your order and the guys working there are always nice and helpful. The area can be pretty busy around the summer and weekends. Parking can be headache but just be patient.

Most of the food on the menu is good but it is expensive for just a burger and fries. Workers are kind but it usually takes a little to get your food. It's in a great little spot with lots of seating by the park. Food is fresh!

Google
Best and I mean best falafel ever!!! I've been a customer for 30 years and I get it every time!! Add avocado, cheese and extra sauce and you will love love love it!!

You know it’s nice to be able to go to a place like Malibu were things are generally expensive but find some good old fashion food where you can enjoy yourself and pay a reasonable price. I had to go for the mutts dog… The hotdog I went with pickles relish mustard and it was a beautiful hotdog… I had to add the chili cheese fries to which I shared with a friend the price of a nice full flavor add some hot sauce if you want to pick it up a bit I didn’t even have to wait more than seven minutes to get my order enjoy enjoy the outdoor seating and I think he will to stop by for a bite you won’t regret it!

Good burgers and fries. Plenty of seating when we were there.

Yelp
This is a small place located in the Malibu Village and Country Mart area. They have a very nice menu and you order through a window. There is no indoor seating as well. The menu consists of burgers, chicken and turkey sandwiches, and falafel and more. Items are not sold as combos so you need to order fries and drinks separately. Not a fan of this, however it's Malibu Beach area, so we decided to give it a try on a couple of recommendations by people in the village. The food was amazing! I had the western bacon burger with huge steak fries and my friend had the turkey avocado sandwich with fries. We both thought the food was 5 star quality. Best fries perhaps I have ever had. Not bad for a place we almost couldn't find. There is plenty of outdoor seating in the courtyard area of the mall. Excellent place to eat. A bit pricey, but we'll worth it.

Yelp
Get the falafel with cheese, avocado, and extra sauce!! That's the way to do it, and it's amazing every time! Been coming here for years. Chili cheese fries are a great addition as well!

Miranda M.

Yelp
Wish I read reviews. Waited about 45 FOURTY FIVE MINUTES for some bland rice, lettuce with nothing on it, and a few prices of small chicken. For $30 THIRTY DOLLARS. What a rip off! Never call when food is ready or tell you when to pick up. Do not recommend. Also, since the food is so flavorless, just know you will have pay extra for any sauce.

Daisy B.

Yelp
Eek. Malibu prices for sub par food. Falafels with a white tortillas LOL French fries sub par. Disappointing. Staff nice.

Houman E.

Yelp
Summary: heard good things about this place from some others but I was not very impressed... Food: ordered the double Malibu burger with cheese and Turkey avocado burger. Nothing really wrong with the meal EXCEPT missing some serious flavor. Not much seasoning on both burgers, if any at all. I'm just not sure. Fries were good but at $6, pretty hefty in cost. Big fries that taste good but also lacking the seasoning. Ambiance: it's mixed up with other restaurants by the park. Lots of outdoor bench tables and other spots to sit and eat. Other restaurants here too so you have lots of options when it comes to food. All restaurants and retail spots are in nice locations. Parking: busy Saturday, especially given the pandemic but no problems finding a parking spot. Lots of spots. Service: pick up/ take out windows with minimal contact so service is not that applicable. No issues with the order. Food took about 10 minutes. I wish they had a sound system so that I could sit somewhere and still here my order number. Conclusion: probably not eating here again but if you want something somewhat quick that taste okay, try it out. Not bad but....

Yelp
I hate giving less than 4 stars but this is really meh food and meh food makes me sad! We got the teriyaki burger for $10.95. To add cheese, it's $2 extra, and to have fries on the side it's another $5.95. What? Crazy! The burger was so extremely bland and also dry. It lacked so much flavor, so sad! It also took long to make. So glad didn't add fries because was gonna be disappointed even more perhaps. We also got the falafel salad for $12.95 which is insane for 4 pieces of dry falafel with a bunch of cabbage, lettuce, and tomatoes, but I guess inflation! Right? You have to find your own seats outside by the playground and all the other restaurants and stores. There are mostly benches, and they're usually packed on weekends so better keep an eye out for available seats before you order at the window. It's a really nice, relaxing, outdoor seating, but can be noisy and super sunny at times but there are shaded areas and all the tables have umbrellas. It's a nice atmosphere and it's nice to bring your kids here too because it's enjoyable for them too! I'm not sure if I'll order here again, but if I do, I'll get something else for sure!

Yelp
I was visiting Malibu Village and saw falafel on the wall of this small food shack. I ordered falafel sandwich. You order from a window. They have tables outside in the village courtyard. It was ready in less than five minutes. Ordering was easy and staff was friendly. Food was just okay for me because I had better falafels. Especially wrap-bread was crumpling and there were more filling than falafel I think. It was just okay for me.

James M.

Yelp
Was greeted right away by "Jusevio", at the counter I asked which are the most popular burgers, so long story short I get the Cheddar Melt Burger but added extra avocado, lettuce, and onions. Total came out to $27.27, original price around 13$. Inflation is ughh, I know. But overall experience was honestly not bad and my stomach didn't hurt or feel queezy at all after eating the food so I wouldn't mind coming back at all!

AJ C.

Yelp
Seems like they have made some changes in the last year and are continuing to improve. The chicken teriyaki platter, though on the pricey end, was very filling and put together well both in presentation, quantity, and flavor. Was very enjoyable in the California sun! The Mutt Dog though was overdone and I didn't like it as much. A lot of filling and not much dog to it. Great place for families and for days with good weather! The playground and area is cute and could be a fun afternoon!

J R.

Yelp
The food is decent but not great. The prices are high even for a tourist shopping bazaar. This is a walk up fast food place. It was $30 for two small sandwiches with one order of fries and without drinks. The seating was shared with other eateries and lacked any charm other than people watching. Maybe I should have had a falafel since most of the good reviews include the falafel.

Trax C.

Yelp
Falafel with cheese. I've been coming here since I was a kid, I travel the world and when I came back this is my first stop. Literally one of my favorite foods in the world. 3.5 darts is ridiculous!

Ely W.

Yelp
These people are a ripoff!!! Oily fries, oily falafel. Then they charge taxes equaling $12. My bill came out to $49. And wanted a dollar for a refill. THIS PLACE SUCKS!!!

Jason K.

Yelp
This is a great place and a good vibe to sit outside. The food is good but portions were somewhat small for the price (it is Malibu I guess). Lots of other shops and restaurants in the area. Would go back on a nice day spending time in Malibu

Carrie W.

Yelp
It's pretty quick burgers, grilled cheese, chicken sandwiches. The taste is ok not great. My kids do enjoy the grilled cheese and steak fries. The peopl serving you are ok not really friendly.

Michael J.

Yelp
Great burger !! Highly recommend the double burger. Also the teriyaki burger was excellent. The meat is fresh and well seasoned, the bun is really delicious a dark bread and more wholesome than usual, accompanied by a generous wedge of onion, tomato and romaine lettuce. They use a nice touch of thousand island but not heavy, just enough for flavor. Not five stars because it didn't have a side dish included (anything! even a pickle) and their drink selection is limited to run of the mill sodas and lemonade.

Tom G.

Yelp
Well - what can I say that's critical about this place? Nothing?! Yep - it's a combination of a deli and grill - you order outside and pick up inside and it's sometimes not obvious how to go about it if it's your first time (it was our first time) - and we just split an italian sandwich. It was typical and good - no complaints. Dining outside the crowd was typical - I grew up in Malibu some 30 years ago and moved on when I was on my own - ending up in a nice but not Malibu neighborhood over the hill. There my next oor neighbor is a pro football player and the fellow across the street has a hot red Ferrari - so it's similarly nice and mildly pretentious - not me of course... chuckles... but back to Malibu Mutts' ... Their site was not in existence when I resided in Malibu - so the discovery of the place is a pleasant surprise. Outdoor seating and I'm an easy fan! I'll be back to relax and get a bite to eat again soon.

J G.

Yelp
What a cool little place. Wonderful outside sitting area and lots of people watching. The falafel sandwich was awesome. They make a great plate of food!! Enjoy.

Laura D.

Yelp
I've come here through the years, nice stop between Ventura and LA. The hamburgers are good, the turkey burger has not maintained its quality. Today got a melted cheese turkeyburger ($8.95), a turkey patty for Joey, and fries, plus a coke. $22.50 A little steep for food you order from a window in the outdoor area of Malibu Country Mart. The turkey did not taste fresh and even Joey the dog wouldn't eat it. The fries were terrific, though I would like them a little more crisp. Fries are separate, $2.95, don't come with the burger. The nicest thing about this place is that it's in the Mart, with grass, playground for kids, lots of shops, and lots of outdoor tables. Today it was mobbed with bike riders from the AIDS bike ride, and there was still lots of room. So worth it to come here every once in awhile, even though it's not 5 stars.

Cyrena S.

Yelp
Ordered a cup of chili with onion. Super quick and delish especially with the cooler weather. There is also a nice outdoor seating area with a park.

Jin C.

Yelp
Ehhhh. Where do I begin. This place certainly has potential but I honestly think they're the laziest burger shack around, unlike The Country Kitchen, which is also a shack/hut but has incredible tasting food. I have been here now 4 times, each time giving them the benefit of the doubt thinking, oh they'll be better this time. All I want is a burger. But how can they even get burgers wrong? Here is one example of just one of the times I have gone here: I asked for no lettuce or tomato on my burger, but that I would like to purchase avocado on my burger instead, and when it was served up, it had lettuce and tomato. When I told the cashier, he took it to the line cooks in the back and they literally looked at it, ADDED tomato, and gave it back, without putting my paid for avocado on there. I once again with the best smile on my face told the cashier that I asked for no lettuce or tomato, and that they had forgotten to add avocado. He is now grumpy and harshly grabs the burger and slaps it on their prep table and takes out the tomato but leaves the lettuce, and forgets about the avocado yet again. At this point I gave up. The hamburgers are consistently dry, the buns not even toasted or anything (straight from bag) and so at this point I may as well start making my own if I am ever craving a burger that is poorly made, because I make bad burgers, hence why I come here in hopes it'll be better than mine.

Renee C.

Yelp
I have been coming here for over 30 years and only order the Falafel which in my view is the best I have ever had. There is outdoor seating all around and even on busy days I usually find a spot. Perfect place to bring young ones with the sandbox and swings and slides nearby. The Owner is always here and has been for all these years, working along his efficient crew. Everyone is awesome! Please use the tip jar, they work hard with friendliness to get the food out fast and it is so good!

Michelle M.

Yelp
O man, this has to be the worst burger ever! The patties are frozen and perfectly shaped and Thinner than McDonalds. They come on whole wheat buns similar to Wonder buns. Yuck! Everything is very generic, one lettuce leaf thick white onion and a green tomato with thousand island dressing. I got a turkey burger, my husband got a classic hamburger and our son got a chili dog. One order of fries to share. No drinks. Total? $36.00!!! It's like a walk up window beach shack. They give you a number on your receipt for your order. We were waiting on the bench right in front of it for quite awhile so my husband walked to the window and found our food just sitting there. They never even called our number out to let us know it was ready. By the time we ate it it was like warm. Bummer. Won't ever return or recommend. Shocked it's been there so long. Blaaaaah, that's all.

Cassie P.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years for exactly one thing.....FRENCH FRIES. They are big steak fries that are crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside. They are never greasy and they are served from the window piping hot. YUMMMMM!

Gustin O.

Yelp
The best lunch place around Malibu! Whenever we drop by Malibu, my family always visit this place for lunch. Burgers and falafel are exceptionally delicious with fresh patty grilled and good and fresh quality bread. Kids menu such as chicken fries, grilled cheese sandwich, erc are great as well.

Mike T.

Yelp
Recently had lunch here and ordered the falafel wrap with fries. I wasn't impressed by the falafel wrap at all; the falafel was just OK and the tahini sauce wasn't anything special. Fries were standard fat fries in a regular paper tray, which get points for not being greasy. The area is a nice place to sit and relax though.

Clara C.

Yelp
No, their falafel sandwich is not authentic but it's SO YUMMY! After seeing such bummer reviews about my beloved Mutts Falafel, I decided it was time to update my 7 year old review. Here are a few things to know: *If you are expecting falafel balls in a pita pocket with a tahini based sauce, this ain't it. *It's rolled in a whole pita & wrapped in paper, do NOT unwrap it!! You risk an awful mess if you do. Tear the paper as you go. *Order it with extra sauce - it's more like a yogurt dressing, a tzatzki without cucumber, if you will. *There IS good amount of lettuce & cabbage but it lends a nice crunch. *If you want to go REALLY non-traditional, add cheese...so worth it! Again, this is not a traditional falafel in a pita pocket but I think if you know that going in, you'll find a deep love for The Mutts unique take on it. The falafel is the reason for my 5 stars.

N R.

Yelp
Other reviewers already nicely summarized what this place is about -- a very bad, expensive burger place in a nice outdoor shopping center. I think we'd go there again if we are driving by there again (and if we must eat) because I like being able to sit with my dog and kids outside to eat. But, yes, this must be one of the worst dishes I had in my life. Where can I begin? The burger had absolutely no flavor, but it had so much thousand island dressing (it was very messy to eat). Now, the burger had a very generous portion of lettuce, onions, and tomatoes, so it's not like the store is trying to cut ingredients. The fries had absolutely no flavor, so I had to use serious amount of ketchup. My family asked how my food is, and I had to say -- well, it's a burger in Malibu, just to be polite and keep it positive! After all, all other restaurants in the shopping mall are rated low, except for one place that looked significantly more expensive! So, I have no complaint, but if the store people are reading this review, I would really recommend they put more salt on every burger and side dish (or maybe at least make another version in addition to the current unsalted dishes!). The sitting area is very nice, and it's a perfect place to stop by with family especially if you have a dog.

Jack F.

Yelp
So burger was ok but best part of the turkey burger I had was lettuce and tomato. Difficult to find any inexpensive food in Malibu. It's not like its an island somewhere but guess shops pay dearly for rent. I would try again with Avocado added. Steak fries were good with ketchup.

Cher O.

Yelp
Best falafels in the entire world!! Yummy chili cheese fries as well. Order your falafel with cheese, avocado and extra and I mean extra sauce!! Nobody can compare!! Been going for 50 years and it is just as spectacular as my first visit!! Everything is great on the menu but I highly recommend the falafel sandwich!!

Olivia J.

Yelp
Love this place! They have the best falafels and have had for years. I've been going here since I was a toddler and they've always been the same and so delicious. Super quick and easy to order and pick up and eat in the park or take to the beach. highly recommend for a quick and delicious grab and go!

Joanne N.

Yelp
MY FAVORITE restaurant in Malibu country mart! Honestly don't know why it took me so long to start coming here, but once I did, it instantly became one of my favorite spots! The cheddar melt burger is so tasty and you can tell the condiments that they put are all so fresh. I also enjoy the chicken burger here, and have found it hard to find a good chicken burger in the Malibu area. I would definitely suggest getting the falafel sandwich. It is so fresh and delicious and all the flavors work out so well. It is a very simple wrap, but it boasts of a lot of flavor and makes you want to just eat more! If you find yourself in the Malibu area and want a simple quick meal then I cannot suggest this place enough! You won't be disappointed!

Paul V.

Yelp
So you're here... in Malibu, and you're looking for a bite to eat that isn't A) a fast food chain or B) a sit-down money pit. Congratulations! Because if you're in the Malibu Mart area, you're pretty much in one of two locations where finding such a meal is possible (the other being where Lily's Cafe is next to Von's). In the mood for a burger as opposed to the Mexican offered at Howdy's? Malibu Mutt it is. Star 1 - How was the service and atmosphere? Especially for being in Malibu, Mutt is about as simple as it gets. Walk up to the counter, place your order, pay and wait. The first glaring issue is that Mutt is cash only. Seriously? What century are we in? Especially in Malibu, where you pay a premium for absolutely everything, you'd think that Mutt's relatively pricey menu would warrant a credit card machine. Besides that, the service is quick. Star Granted. Star 2 - How were the portions relative to the cost? Opting to go with the Western Burger ($8.95 before tax) and a Chocolate Milkshake ($4.25 before tax), I was pleased to see that my burger was of a decent size: http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=OKX-V5j_qfuOebeHeWGrHg&select=b-Y1rJ8VRskhr-jO43ssuA As you can see, the burger is decent, it came packed with a good and fresh patty, and I left full for under $15. Yes, the milkshake was overpriced, but it wasn't enough to warrant the loss of a star. By Malibu standards, Mutt is acceptable in the value department if you want to eat out. Star Granted. Stars 3/4 - How was the food? Meh. My burger was good, but honestly nothing special. While I appreciated the fresh ingredients, I wished I was on the other side of the canyon where my $10 could fetch me a beast of a burger virtually anywhere. Additionally, the milkshake was disappointing, and was very clearly made with Hershey Syrup. Single Star Granted. Star 5 - Would you eat it every day if you could? Unless you're good and ready for some fancy dining at a cost, Malibu is really a case of pick your poison when it comes to eating out. Outside of chains, (and it should be noted that nearby La Salsa isn't a bad option by any means) the options are typically just shy of that $10 meal range, and as a result I can't honestly say I've ever given this star to a Malibu location. Want to enjoy a meal in Malibu? Go to Ralphs, grab some goodies, and picnic out on the beach. No Star Granted.

Kim M.

Yelp
SLOW. So........ so.............. sloooooooooooooooow. Food was mediocre.

Sara S.

Yelp
My friends raved about the falafel at Malibu Mutt but I was craving a veggie burger and it was decent!

Rachell N.

Yelp
I've gone to Malibu Mutt for over 25 years. When my kids were young we went before we would go to the beach. Malibu Mutt has great food and it's been wonderful and consistent with amazingly great food. The same owners and it's an A++++++ rating. Thank you so much for being quality and consistent through all of the years!

Van C.

Yelp
This place has been here a LONG LONG time before I was born ( I'm 28 ). I've had everything on the menu and visit here often. It's all highly above average so lets move on. My usual is the vegetarian falafel. The falafel is seasoned so well I'm fairly certain it's the best I've ever had. I've had falafels from MANY Mediterranean food places and they don't even come close to these. They roll it up into pita bread w/ yogurt sauce, lettuce and tomato and it couldn't be any better. Simple yet extremely tasteful and enjoyable. I can't comment on decor much because this place is a order at window outside spot. Fast food but gourmet with style and great preparation. Staff: Very nice, professional and helpful. Food: Highly above average. Cleanliness: Clean as far as I can see and tell. Decor: N/A

Angelina E.

Yelp
I ordered a malibu burger with cheese, grilled onions, no thousand island sauce. I was given a burger with no cheese, no lettuce, and extra thousand island sauce. This place is not even worth the rating I'm giving.

Pamela G.

Yelp
From way back in the 70s, this place has had the best Falafel I've ever been able to find. I no longer live in California but I spent some time in Malibu back in 2001 and got to have one of these puppies. Still as yummy as I remember! And yes, like others have mentioned, what makes this falafel so damn good is that is isn't your typically traditional falafel. Malibu Mutt is the reason I still prefer yogurt sauce and cheddar cheese on my falafel to this day! Their pita bread is very good as well. Maybe this review isn't that relevant now but from all appearances, this place has not changed. You MUST have a falafel from here if you have not already. Gawd, I wish we had one of these in Alaska LOL

Dandy M.

Yelp
A very overpriced place with flavorless food. Imagine a tiny shed with 2 windows in the middle of Cross Creek in Malibu. An order of fries was $7.00 for 8 pieces. The wrap was a slice or 2 of chewy turkey and some shredded cheese, a slice of tomato with LOTS of shredded lettuce and Mayo. It was like they went to Costco right before opening to pick up the day's ingredients. There are other options just steps away.

Jennifer A.

Yelp
One of my go to places for lunch. The guys that work here are so sweet and they run a fast and efficient operation. It can get really busy during the weekends so I do recommend calling ahead. Some of my favorite menu items include the falafel of course, veggie burger, teriyaki chicken pita, and the best kept secret on the menu the chicken teriyaki plate which comes with a salad and rice.

Diane D.

Yelp
I've been going here since I was a child in the 80's. The falafel is still made exactly the same. They wrap it like a burrito so it's easy to eat! Delicious

Brenna G.

Yelp
Loved the Falafel, sat outside while I ate & relaxed. Will definitely be back

Quincii P.

Yelp
Great food! Got the avocado turkey burger with chili cheese fries. They also have low cal and vegetarian options.

Mo C.

Yelp
I love Malibu Mutt! The cashier and cooks are always friendly! Their falafel salad and wrap is great. Unfortunately, I am lactose intolerant but they are able to substitute the tahini sauce with italian dressing and it is still unbelievable good! Even better with some hot sauce ;) Best little window stop I've really been to.

Alex Y.

Yelp
Decen't burger spot (a burger shack really) in Malibu, across from Cros Creek shopping center. Burger, Fries + Coke costs a little over $10 (i think about $14) but you get a lot of food and it's pretty decent quality. Only a 3 starer because it's really nothing to crazy but still worth a shot. They do however make a five star tahini, if you fo the felafel route, or just like something other than ketchup for you fries, like me.

Dalia M.

Yelp
The food is not too bad. It's the attitude of the owner that turns you off from this place. I asked for some tahini to go with my falafel (Which is free for taking at other places) and he asked for a dollar for each small pack!! Taking advantage of the customer during Covid. Unbelievable!

Maura S.

Yelp
I ordered the cheddar melt burger, and honestly the double double I got from In n Out was about 20x better. It was so flat, chewy, and barely edible. The side of a couple falafel balls was fine and sort of saved this from a full fledged 1 star review. The man also double charged me for my burger, however when I told him he was able to credit me back after a few min, so that wasn't the biggest deal ever.

Tia R.

Yelp
We were hungry and everywhere else had really long lines, so we sucked it up. We ordered the falafel and veggie garden burger. Pretty standard and nothing bad. The tzatziki sauce was pretty bland. My daughter's burger came apart after a few bites. Counter service was fine except we were waiting a while for our order. We sat right in front of the stand and they never called our number. I finally went up and found our order had been sitting there. The other options are probably better but it's fine. I wouldn't get the falafel pita again.
