Malt & Mold is one of the best spots in the city for a beer. Kevin and staff were all extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The beers available are carefully curated and span a wide selection of styles and breweries across the country. The vibes are warm, intimate, and cozy. This was one of my favorite spots in the city and I look forward to returning every time I’m in the area. The care and pride that has gone into this establishment is obvious and I can’t recommend it enough.

I always walked past this shop and never had the chance to go in. It’s been almost a year of walking past and today I decided I had a few minutes to go in. The girl who was there was super helpful and showed me all of the items they had in the shop. They had cheeses, bread, craft beers, sandwiches and a whole bunch of other items. We walked around the shop and everything was really well organized, clean, neat, and was beautifully displayed on the shelves. I loved the cheeses they had and sampled a holiday special which was a truffle cheese that I bought. I also bought a rose cider to share with my sister and a sandwich. I really liked this shop and want to come back for a tasting that they said go almost every Friday! I am not a big beer drinker but they really did have a lot of great options including hard ciders! I will be coming back for the bread!

Malt & Mold is my favorite beer and cheese shop in Manhattan, although, to be fair, they carry so much more! They have a sandwich of the day, which are always perfection. Their cheese selection and cheese platters are incredible. (The Secret de Lys, a cows milk from France might be the best cheese I’ve ever had.) They carry everyday beers and specialty beers (like Goose Island Bourbon County Stout) and, if you’re so inclined, have a mug club! This is the perfect store to pick up quick food-related gifts or treat yourself. Let’s be honest - I typically treat myself! Word to the wise: Get the chocolate-covered corn nuts and thank me later! Truly a gem of a store and the owners, Kevin and Caitlin, are approachable, knowledgeable, and genuinely nice people.

Google
Not your average neighborhood liquor store, these guys are true beer aficionados (and cheese connoisseurs). Despite their in-depth knowledge, they're super approachable, down-to-earth, and friendly. You won't find a cheap 6-pack of Bud but, for what you get, the prices are quite reasonable. They even refill growlers here. They do beer tasting every Friday night too.

Michael Fein

Google
Incredibly nice folks, great selection with excellent service. I recently went with my partner to pick up some cheese for a snack. They had an incredible selection of local cheeses as well as local brews. They were super helpful when we were deciding which to get and even let us taste a number of cheeses and drinks before making a selection

Google
Such a special and homey place!!! Kevin the owner is the ultimate host who makes you want to come back time and time again! Which luckily for us, they have a membership progam with really cool mugs! All the beer is seasonal so you are in for a treat everytime and the cheeses are all amazing!!

Google
Great beer and cheese shops. They have beer cans and bottles to go, beer on tap to drink there and a great selection of cheese, canned fish and anything else you require for a nice charcuterie board! They even had The Bruery Black Tuesdays 2023 to buy (one of the best stouts ever made and about 21% abv). I'll try to make my way back again!

Google
I was there for an event. Mimi Tom the cheese lady were on point. Small intimate well curated bottles cans tap list. The patrons were eclectic and sweet.

Yelp
The pre-made sandwiches here rock. A bit expensive most definitely, but always high quality ingredients. Awesome prosciutto and variety of cheeses. I find a lot of cheeses here that I've never even heard of before (and I consider myself to be well versed in the cheese world). Favorite cheeses they sell are: *A phenomenal Comtè *A Goat Cheddar (it's like a hard version of goat cheese and it's flippin fantastic) *A maple smoked cheddar They sell a bunch of cute gift ideas as well like cheese knives, cutting boards, mustards, and even BEERS ON TAP!

Morlene C.

Yelp
This cute little cheese shop is such a neighborhood gem and somehow is able to fit so much stuff into this tiny storefront. They have a whole host of cheeses in their refrigerated case, with helpful descriptions of the flavor profile and origin beneath each one. Along the walls you'll find accoutrements, jams, bread, crackers, and even gifts like knives, cutting boards, and cookbooks. In the back there are fridges full of craft beer and pints of McConnell's ice cream. That stuff is delicious. Over the years I've fulfilled all of my cheese dreams here. As someone who [pre-pandemic] regularly hosts book clubs and potlucks I'm always seeking good cheese and I've always been able to come away with something new here. The folks behind the counter are so evidently passionate about cheese and can recommend something for every palate. They're keeping things safe right now by keeping the doors open and have a big fan that's turned on in store. High tops are set up so you can order one of their beers on tap to enjoy with your cheese, which to me sounds like an excellent way to spend an afternoon.

Stephanie Y.

Yelp
What a great little place! Kevin was very knowledgeable and welcoming. He had a nice variety on tap, and a nice curated selection in cans/bottles. I had a wonderful time learning about the different beers currently available with a little sampling. Also they have lots of tasty charcuterie for you to purchase for home, or they can prepare a plate for you to enjoy in their outdoor seating area fitted with heaters. Me and a group of us had a great time here and the cheddar sandwich with arugula and ipa infused mustard was sooooo gooood. I definitely would come here again!

Yelp
Malt & Mold is a great craft beer shop. I stopped in this weekend on a recommendation from a friend and I was surprised by what I found, this isn't just another beer shop but a gathering of beer lovers. There was a tasting going on when I arrived so I was able to try a few new brews. I didn't even get the chance to ask the owner for recommendations for beers to purchase because the regular patrons offered great flavor profiles on the beers available for purchase when they saw me looking in the case. The owner of the place was very friendly and explained a lot about his shop and when they get new beers in. I had a great experience and will definitely return.

Julio S.

Yelp
Great spot for cheese, beer and wine. Definitely worth the walk from midtown. Service was very pleasant.

Cheryl N.

Yelp
Such a fan of this small shop. Decent craft beers and excellent cheeses. They have so much here including things like sausages, sandwiches, boozy ice cream, and pork rinds. Very efficient use of space. There is a small amount of seating, but definitely worth checking this place out when you are in the hood. There should be more shops like this in Manhattan.

Carlie M.

Yelp
Love this little shop. We just moved in really close to hear and it's great. They have a bunch of different craft beers on tap and in the can. You can pick and choose the ones you like per can so you don't have to buy a whole pack. The staff is so friendly and they have a nice little outdoor set up. Can't wait to come back here again soon.

Steven T.

Yelp
Great local place. Nice place to stop in for a beer and some pretzels and beer cheese. Nice outdoor seating and people working are always nice and helpful. Can even take a growler home with you

Michael C.

Yelp
What a fun draft beer and cheese place. And they have cans galore too. Great sidewalk seating and fun clientele.

Sherry L.

Yelp
We stopped by because this is one of the few stores in Manhattan that carry Tipsy Scoop's liquor infused ice cream. My friend wanted a drink and I wanted some ice cream, so naturally, this seemed like the best compromise. (It was!) This store is small and dark and easy to miss especially with all of the surrounding scaffolding, but if you're looking for a (boozy) gift for your beer loving friends, you must stop by here! There's a huge selection of craft brews (my friend was literally like a 5-yr-old in the candy shop) and a rotating sandwich menu with a daily 'sandwich of the day'. They also have beer tasting between 5-8PM on Fridays, which I hope to catch one of these days! I've been by here a couple of times and the ladies at the counter are always super friendly and helpful. I'll definitely be back - either to restock on liquor infused ice cream or just to grab a sandwich and beer. :)

Lawrence K.

Yelp
Cool place, very small. Great staff but minimal selection for beer. Their ice cream selection is phenomenal.

Holly B.

Yelp
Yum. Interesting little store. Stopped in looking for a quick bite on a 20 minute break. Lucky me. Bought the vegetarian version of their daily sandwich and it was everything not only good, but very happy together-- mound of fresh arugula, zippy roasted and marinated red peppers, artisan mozzarella on a crusty bread. So good. And for $7, right on the money.

David H.

Yelp
Hidden Gem, staff is more well educated and more helpful than any doctor I have have ever visited. Try the beer cheese, or barrel aged honey, lots of hudson valley products.

Rob C.

Yelp
We miss the original East Broadway location but managed to make it to the Gramercy Park Malt & Mold for a tasting event. The sidewalk and street side outdoor drinking and dining venue was well designed for COVID restrictions and equipped with electric heaters that were not quite necessary yet, The beers and sandwich were nicely presented and tasty and the owner, host, was his his usual friendly and informative self.

Lacey W.

Yelp
Post lunch at a French Bistro on Park Avenue we were on the hunt for a cheese shop before the mini blizzard hit. I yelped nearby options and Malt & Mold popped up. We dashed over to secure provisions for a night in and found ourselves very much in heaven. The cozy shop was ripe with pungent creamy, tangy, sharp cheese scents layered atop the aroma of hops and warm bread. Like the bouquet in a glass of French Burgundy the depth continued with every waft. The quirky cheese monger invited us to dive in. Tasting our way through the case we settled on the following: Prairie Breeze Cheddar, Challerhocker, Chebris & Ouleout Now for the accoutrements- Castleton Crackers-simple for cheese or stand along flavors The Gracious Gourmet-Savory and sweet options Tipsy Scoops-endless choices! We opted for wine to pair so headed on to our next neighborhood shop. This lovely shop welcomed us with open arms and set the tone for the evening!

Marleigh S.

Yelp
I happened to walk by on a Sunday after getting some work done, and they were having a celebration with music outside and free beer tasting inside. I was welcomed in by multiple employees and the shop owner to try some beer for free. He gave me a sample cup of 8 or so beers to try with explanations of where each beer was from and the process used to produce it. Meanwhile, people surrounded us happily drinking pints they had ordered. Another really cool thing about this place-- if you buy there or bring your own growler, you can purchase beer fresh of the tap to take home. AND you only have to pay for the price of the beer! Way cheaper than purchasing a 6 pack, for example. The owner explained that if left sealed, the growler would stay fresh for a week. It sounds like a great way to get beer for a gathering for example. They had a lot of high quality beer and great prices to match. I will definitely return here, either to have a pint in-store, or to bring a heartier size home to drink with friends. I loved the atmosphere, and will definitely be back! Thank you!

Brian V.

Yelp
Fantastic beer and cheese shop with great selection of cheeses and specialty meats and gourmet groceries with many cold beers to-go with a great selection of taps and growler fills, always changing varieties and having a broad selection of types of beers and ciders. Also carries beer cheese snacks, cheese plates for dine-in and catered cheese/meat platters for your private gathering needs. Tastings several times a week. Phoebe works here.

Mary Kate W.

Yelp
Such a great place to hangout with friends. The local brews are amazing. The cheese is such a tasty snack!! Definitely coming back!!

Paul M.

Yelp
Another place we were able to visit thanks to the Beer Passport. This is a small space, looks like it used to be a old NYC deli or something. Today it not only serves fresh beers, but also has an assortment of cheeses and other small tasty items to have. The service was great, we were allowed to try all different things. I recommend a stop here.

George C.

Yelp
Dropped in to find their freezer stocked with just two pints of the same flavor of Tipsy Scoop for $11 (FWIW they didn't check ID...they claimed they usually have more and expected a shipment within the week, but I won't be back to check because the one I bought was freezer-burned almost beyond being edible after a serious thaw on a 90-degree day, which is impressive given what alcohol should do to ice crystals). Their 2nd location has quite an odd address format here.

Cher A.

Yelp
Great neighborhood place! Amazing people work here- super friendly and awesome. It's a good place for those that love beer OR cheese. Because I hate beer but love cheese and I go to this place. They have different beer on tap every week and it's all from local breweries ( I only know this because my fiancé comes here to drink all the time especially after I bought him like a beer membership for this place --- yes they have a beer membership... Like Amazon prime just... For drinking beer... You get your own mug and everything and whenever you go, you get a mug and pay half price of the beer and sit and drink there while you eat cheese) So onto the cheese. They have tons of great cheeses and this is one of the only places that have this special cheese I LOVE. I always get a pound of it whenever I go. I won't tell you what cheese because they always run out of it and I don't want y'all going there to get my cheese. Haha! But it's a good place with beer and cheese and good people. Thumbs up.

Sean C.

Yelp
M&M is a Gramercy staple - their craft beer game is strong AF (draft & carry) + the charcuterie trays R next level‼

Adam K.

Yelp
Great spot for local craft beers. They are very well stocked in the best NYC brews. They sell cans individually and by the 6 pack all of which aren't cheap but still cheaper than if bought at a bar. Growlers much more reasonably priced and the staff are very nice, they always give recs based on my preferences and let me try whatever I want before getting a growler. In an area otherwise a little dead for craft beer this place absolutely stands out.

David V.

Yelp
Love Malt and Mold. It had an embarrassingly large role in us choosing to move to Gramercy. We had looked at our first apartment around here, stopped in for a beer and a sandwich, and thought, "if this is the type of store that survives in Gramercy, this is the neighborhood we want to be in." Their Friday tastings, their great cheese, their great rotating selection, their beer club with the tantalizingly limited availability, the strong sense of neighborhood community... all about it.

Ian M.

Yelp
Excellent place. Super-chill and laid back, a great selection of beers, some of which you really won't find anywhere else. They'll also make a sandwich-of-the-day to order which is consistently delicious. Beer, cheese, free tastings on Fridays, what's not to love?

Pat L.

Yelp
Can't say enough about how much we enjoyed the visit. First off, we started with really good free beer samples from an Oregon brewer they brought in, then moved into the back where we had various drafts from their very good draft list. Finally we got a cheese plate, going with the "Monger's choice", where she identified what we liked and picked really good cheeses for us. Great beer, great cheese, and super nice with no pretentiousness, we'll definitely be going back.

Brenna A.

Yelp
I cannot say enough about Kevin, Caitlin, and the team at Malt and Mold. We were lucky enough to book an after-hours private party for my husband's birthday and had an incredible evening from start to finish. From my very first phone call Kevin was friendly, helpful, and professional. He responded consistently to my (many) emails and everything was top notch the day of the party. We had a smaller group than originally planned and Kevin was kind enough to allow us to bring home the remaining DELICIOUS snacks that were leftover. We will be eating incredible cheeses, breads, meats, and veggies all week. The beer was excellent and I am not typically a big drinker but I certainly made the most of last night. Everyone was attentive, offering refills, samples, and also socializing and being friendly. We even ran a little over our time and they were so easygoing about it; we never felt rushed. Additionally, we had a cake delivered for the party and Kevin kept it safe in the cooler, bringing it out at the perfect time for rousing round of "Happy Birthday." Do yourself a favor and book an after-hours party. It's an amazing deal and a night you won't forget! Thanks again to everyone at Malt and Mold!

Maura M.

Yelp
Disappointing craft beer selection. I understand space is limited, but they mainly had Goose Island and Lagunitas on draft...They also had a number of retail bottles which I felt I could get at any number of nicer delis. This wasn't what I expected from a place called "malt and mold." Maybe I had the wrong idea. There were a few customers having tasters who seemed happy. I don't plan on going back though. I will go to my other usual beer spots farther downtown.

Mike R.

Yelp
Excellent beer selection, delicious cheese, and a fun array of fancy foodie gifts jam packed into a cozy store. The owners and staff are always friendly and helpful. Beer tastings feature a different craft brewer pouring free samples every Friday evening and the staff choosing fancy bottles off the shelf to share on Wednesday evenings. You absolutely have to try the number 8! Always a good time if you stay for an in-house pint from the likes of Grimm, Other Half, Hill Farmstead, KCBC, and Interboro or if you want to grab some beer and cheese to go that will surely impress your friends. I sometimes worry about the bearded regular with strange t-shirts who seems to live in the store, but they assure me he's harmless.

Teresa B.

Yelp
We love Malt and Mold! It is our favorite hang out spot in the city. Caitlin and her team are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. You have to go there for an amazing brew and cheeses from out of this world!!!

Jennifer F.

Yelp
Craft beer and cheese shop?! What more could you want? This small shop packs lots of cool stuff. I'm a lover of beer and cheese so I was pumped to find this. I tried the Ballast Point Habanero Sculpin IPA in Boston at Tip Tap Room in Beacon hill and loved it. I discovered Malt and Mold while searching online for places to purchase that beer in Manhattan. Unfortunately when I swung by the store they said that there was an issue with the distributor so they didn't have it in stock yet. The woman I spoke with was really nice and said she would update their online beer menu once it came in. I left the city for a week and called the store when I returned. Unfortunately I learned they were all sold out and hoping to get more in. This review will totally move up to 5 stars once I'm able to get my hands on that Ballast Point Habanero Sculpin IPA! Also, they do free beer tastings on Fridays (I think from 4-8PM). Very cool! Update- they got the Ballast Point Habanero Sculpin IPA in stock. Ahhh it's so good. Thank you Malt & Mold!!

Ivy T.

Yelp
Always new beers to chose from. Great little snacks and local delicacies. Amazing cheeses! Great service, extremely knowledgeable staff. Wonderful tastings on Fridays from craft breweries across the country!

Natasha T.

Yelp
The fresh sandwich sign got my attention. Lovely beer selection with sandwiches, spreads & a great host to go with it. Enjoyed hanging here for a few hours!

Molly G.

Yelp
The heaven bells rang when this place opened up in the neighborhood. Unbelievable selection of snacks (mcclures pickle chips, prosciutto, craft popcorn) killer mixers, cheese, and the most delicious selection of beers. The owners are awesome and always willing to help you pair a cheese or select a beer to go with whatever you're making for dinner. Were here at least 3 times a week. Neighborhood gem.

Nicole R.

Yelp
So excited for this new addition to the neighborhood. Amazing cheese and bread selection. Super knowledgeable staff. Stop here before hosting any dinner party!

Poppy P.

Yelp
Awesome selection of beer, knowledgable and helpful staff. Highly recommended! They also sell cheeses, salamis, condiments, bread, etc and will fill growlers for you to take home.

Harris M.

Yelp
Best Beer Shop in town! There's always something new and delicious to try on tap. Love the tastings on Friday. Staff and ownership are friendly and helpful. Plus they support the local breweries.

Gary M.

Yelp
nice place for good beer but if you are expecting good Stout you might be very disappointed as they only have a few good Stouts a few times during the year.

Samson R.

Yelp
Love this Store in general, but especially in this neighborhood where we lack A lot of options. They have a fabulous selection of beer and a lot of really interesting other products. The only reason I'm giving it four stars and that five is because they're a little pricey. But there really fabulous and really nice - and knowledgable.

Engin E.

Yelp
Malt & Mold became one of my favorite stores in Gramercy. I frequent this place for well-baked breads, daily made sandwiches for a quick lunch, and a wide beer selection rotating daily. The staff is welcoming and very friendly. There is also a pretty decent cheese selection which you can sample with beer. Some products are a bit overpriced, though for beer and bread, I'd prefer them to any other store in the location in a heartbeat.

Jerry W.

Yelp
Kudos for bringing some good energy to the Gramercy-ish area. Both Kevin & Caitlin are brimming with knowledge, insight, and great taste --- along with provisions that are first-rate! Can't wait for my next growler. And Caitlin, enjoy Cheese Camp!

Caitlin G.

Yelp
I want to love this place because it's great for the neighborhood but I just had such a strange experience. It's Easter Sunday Morning (11:20AM) and as I'm about to open the front door to Malt & Mold Gramercy someone walks out with bread and a bag of other goodies they purchased. So I walk in and am met with a very surprised face and a "We don't open until 12pm." "Oh," I responded, "Well the door is unlocked and that person just walked out." " We don't open until 12pm." So I left and on what's presumed to be a slow day they lost business and ticked off a neighbor. This also isn't the first time I've noticed that have one set of standards for their regulars and another for people just stopping by. Now I definitely understand that's just human nature, but when someone literally watches someone else getting to purchase items prior to 12pm and a worker is there behind the counter and the door is unlocked 40 minutes before you open it's better business to build loyalty and "bend" the rules than rudely dismiss them. The other times we've shopped there it's been fine. Good food, high-end but extremely pricey. Become one of their "regulars" though and I'm sure you'll get a 5-star experience.
