Infatuation Staff Writer Kat Hong's 5 Favorite LA Restaurants Right now

"The newest place on this list by far, Mama D’s is a recently opened African restaurant in Boyle Heights. The menu is filled with excellent Cameroonian dishes by the eponymous Mama’s daughter, Claudia (the original outpost is located outside Washington D.C.), and after just one look at their menu, I knew that this was going to a place where I’d need multiple trips to try everything. But you have to start somewhere, and my first visit was a chefs kiss home run. I got the Classic African Lunch - a rich, bright-red tomato stew paired with fragrant white rice, a.k.a. the ideal meal for when you’ve been staring at a screen for way too long and need something to nurse your weak, caffeine-addled, Twitter-addicted body back to health." - kat hong

Mama D’s African Cuisine Review - Boyle Heights - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Like fire and water, yin and yang, or an art girl and her finance boyfriend — every meal at Mama D’s African Cuisine is a master class in the art of balance. Run by the eponymous Mama’s daughter, Claudia Wanki (Mama D operates the original outpost in Washington D.C.), this non-pretentious Boyle Heights restaurant serves excellent Cameroonian dishes like ndole, jollof rice, and a Classic African Lunch. They’re intense, vibrant dishes, packed with salty flavors and lots of oil, that deliver a punch straight to the taste buds. But unlike the time we got baby bangs, that punch is deliberate. While any one dish might be too rich on its own, when paired with any of the starches, like tuberous gari, a tart and sour yam fufu, or plain white rice, it all comes together to create a perfectly balanced meal— the kind that warrants many return visits, just in order to try everything. It’s an expert design of flavor, deserving of being studied at MIT, or dissected by Roman Mars in an episode of 99% Invisible. photo credit: Jakob Layman But, of course, you’ll have to start somewhere. Begin with the ndole. A brilliant, dark-green stew, it’s a mix of bitter spinach, stewed nuts, and shrimp, that’s both smooth and creamy, like casserole, or nutritious peanut butter. Served with a side of yam fufu, a soft, neutral-tasting cloud of starch that absorbs the dish’s salty and oily flavors, the two complement each other like Andy Richter and Conan O’Brien, David Letterman and Paul Schaffer, or any other late night host and their little sidekick. Or perhaps you’ll want the Classic African Lunch, a beautiful, bright-red tomato stew paired with rice. Savory, thick, and filled with your choice of beef, broiled chicken, shrimp, chicken, or fried fish — it’s a quintessential West African Christmas meal that tastes like a present to yourself, minus all of the pesky paper cuts and online gift wrapping tutorials. But no matter what you order — or how you decide to eat it — a meal here is like getting hit with an extra-big dose of comfort, something we could all use a little more of, these days. Long days at work, (multiple) outstanding parking tickets, or the fact that you had a completely lackluster session with your therapist and still had to pay for it — they’re no match for the kind of world-class, soul-healing meals being made at Mama D’s. You can either eat on the small, limited patio out front, or call (213) 610-5322 to place an order to go. The latter, of course, is perfect for a meal at home, where you’ll inevitably binge the entire first season of Beastars, with not a single break. Hypothetically. Food Rundown photo credit: Jakob Layman African Meat Pies Hand-held! Doughy! Slightly sweet! And filled with spiced ground beef — this mega-doughy meat pie is the perfect snack either for an appetizer or the car ride home. photo credit: Jakob Layman Ndole There are a few ways to order this slightly spicy, Cameroonian comfort dish (you have your choice of beef, smoked turkey, fish, or shrimp), but we prefer it with shrimp. The creamy stew is made from spinach and bitter leaves, then flavored with peanuts, garlic and crayfish. It also comes with a large serving of yam fufu, a sticky, doughy brick made of pounded yams that’s the perfect complement to the ndole’s rich flavors. Like we said earlier, master class. photo credit: Jakob Layman Eru Very similar to Hawaiian laulau, this traditional dish is full of deep, earthy notes. It’s made from wild Eru leaves (which are native to Cameroon) and mixed with spinach, crayfish, and lots of palm oil. On its own, it can be a little overwhelming, so make sure to eat it with an ample bite of the accompanying gari - a tangy West African starch made from cassava roots that tastes a bit like someone ran a sourdough starter through a rice cooker. photo credit: Jakob Layman Classic African Lunch A beautiful, bright-red tomato stew paired with white rice. The stew is nice and thick - think like tomato paste, but filled with beef, broiled chicken, shrimp, chicken, or fried fish. The ideal meal for when you’ve been staring at a screen for way too long and need something to nurse your weak, caffeine-addled, Twitter-addicted body back to health. Classic Latte A.k.a. The Strongest Cup Of Joe in the World. Seriously, this stuff is potent. Warm, buttery, and full-bodied (food talk for ‘delicious’), maybe don’t drink this after 4pm. You’ve been warned." - Kat Hong

Fabulous food and wonderful service. My first time eating the dishes and each were outstanding. Highly recommend. Be careful with the spice medium is plenty hot for this girl...we live in South Orange County and it was worth the drive. We had ndole and chicken with jollof rice...rice was fabulous and had a serious kick...

CAMEROON 🇨🇲 Excerpt from Eat the World Los Angeles: The namesake of the restaurant Mama D. herself, has been running a restaurant just outside of Washington D.C. for many years and at the time of this visit was off to Cameroon to procure necessary ingredients for her and her daughter, who is the chef of this new spot. When asked about her mother, it was mentioned she is "very picky" and could not allow the substitution of some important items, which often happens out of necessity in the city's kitchens serving the traditional foods of countries far away. One of the ingredients that Mama D. brings from back home is the green called ndoleh used in the dish of the same name. It has a unique bitterness that cannot be replicated by spinach or something similar, often the case here in the states. For this reason, the ndole ($17) at Mama D's is a must try and uniquely Cameroonian. It can be served with a couple different choices of meat and side, but in her home country Chef Claudia says you will see it most with shrimp and it goes best with a side of fried plantains. Although the ndole is stewed with peanuts, it remains intensely (albeit pleasantly) bitter and her recommendation of the slightly sweet plantains is a good one.

Mama' D's was great and like nothing I've eaten before. I mean I haven't been to Cameroon so makes sense. Was so magical to see the owner in the kitchen. My friend and I drove an hour from the Valley just to visit and it was well worth it. We ate in the parking lot, Covid style dining. My friend ordered the beans and rice with plantains. He is vegan and that was their vegan options! The beans were a full meal with veg and so much spice. I had Ndole with shrimp and yam fufu. Ndole is one of the traditional dishes of Cameroon, it is a creamy spinach stew with shrimp on top. It was flavorful and delish. The yam fufu was this soft doughy ball wrapped in tin foil. It was kinda like a mash potato dumpling but more doughy and a bit sweeter but still very bland. It was quite comforting to eat. We really enjoyed the food and will definitely be back.

My husband and I were in town from Texas and wanted some African food for our trip back home. We found mama D’s on google and ordered. Claudia was very nice as she took our orders over the phone. Unfortunately, my expectations with African restaurants are not pleasant. The staff is usually short and rude. However, this was not the case. The food was ready in the time that she told us it would be food. Claudia was also very pleasant in person. We ordered the eru, jollof rice and soya. We couldn’t help but to start eating the eru as we were driving. The eru was amazing. We truly enjoyed it. We haven’t gotten to taste the rest yet but I know it will be good. Thank you for good customer service and good food. God bless you!!

Had a great meal from Mama D’s tonight. I ordered the Ndole with shrimp and the Jollof rice. Both were so flavorful and well-spiced. Looking forward to trying more items. Thanks for an amazing introduction to Cameroonian food!

Google
The plantains weren’t that good. My husband ordered a side of plantains with my jollof rice because it wasn’t listed as an included side on Postmates… turns out plantains WERE included with the meal and I ended up with way too many plantains that I don’t like. The jollof rice was delicious. The deep fried fish was okay. Way too many bones for my liking. I wanted smoked turkey but it wasn’t an option on Postmates despite being featured as a protein option on the website’s menu. The menu on the restaurant’s website is different from the menu on Postmates. My husband ordered the egusi stew. He didn’t finish it because he didn’t like it that much. He wasn’t too thrilled that he spent $20 on a meal that only had 6 shrimp. He spent $43.00 on our meals and we both feel our experience wasn’t worth the money. Disappointed but such is life.

Yelp
Mama D's is an African restaurant in a strip mall on Soto Street near the 5. More specifically, it has dishes primarily from Cameroon. And after writing this, I can't wait to return and try more of their really delicious dishes. Ndolé with Shrimp and Yam Fufu: The ndolé is a green stew/soup topped with large pink shrimp and a bright orange Scotch bonnet pepper. You can get it mild, medium, or spicy. Get it spicy as the heat isn't too bad. The ndolé benefits from long slow cooking, which makes it super soft and smooth, but more importantly intensely concentrates the flavors. The stew tastes like savory peanuts and dried crayfish. The leaves have a touch of bitterness, just enough to add depth. The shrimps are perfectly cooked and big. The flavors in the ndolé play well together and they really made my tastebuds happy. After you unwrap the yam fufu, you'll see a cylindrical block that looks like ivory PlayDoh. It kind of feels like sticky rice. I was instructed to tear off a bit and use it to scoop up the soup. After a while of forming the glutinous fufu into small balls, I feel like I'm getting the hang of it. The texture is like knodel (a German dumpling), springy, soft, and slick at the same time. It has a hint of a mashed potato taste, but it's mainly neutral like a noodle. It allows you to enjoy the food that you are dipping. Claudia, the friendly owner, told me that my fufu scooping technique was on point. P.S. That Scotch bonnet is really spicy. I stopped after eating three quarters of the pepper and seating like crazy. Logistics: The door is on the side of the street so you have to walk around the building to get in. You place your order at the counter and pay. When the food is ready, it will be in a takeout container, but there are tables inside where you can eat it.

Yelp
I finally got to try Mama D's and it was amazing... I've been watching Anthony Bourdain's "Parts Unknown" It's a food series where he travels around the world trying food from everywhere.. In one of the episodes he travels to Africa and is eating so much delicious food, so I started craving African food.. I got on Yelp and discovered that Mama D's was close by so I decided to try it... They are open during the pandemic for indoor dining but the menu is still limited... I couldn't decide on what to order so I got the Beef Soya with plantains, and puff-puff ... The beef Soya was so flavorful and the sauce was spicy... The puff-puff taste like fluffy sweet cinnamon clouds ... Everything was so good... The owner seems to be running the restaurant on her own because she was the only one there, she took my order and cooked the food... She was very nice, she could tell it was my first time trying Mama D's and brought me a free cup of the rice to try.. which was also delicious... I can't wait to go back and try more of their authentic dishes. Definitely satisfied my craving and it was delicious, if you live in Boyle heights go check out Mama D's...

Yelp
I learned about Mama D's African Cuisine from an LA Taco article so I had put it on my to try list. I've only had Ethiopian and other African cuisine a handful of time. There's an African restaurant near my place in the valley so that's my point of reference. Location wise, the restaurant is tucked in a very busy plaza in Boyle Heights so parking was an issue. Luckily, we found street parking that wasn't too far. In terms of out door dining, they had a small section by the parking lot. The tables were a bit too close for my comfort after dining in. Because the tables are outside, it can get dusty and a bit sticky- just kindly ask them to wipe it down. You go inside an place your order and it takes about 30 mins for the food to come but trust me it's worth the wait. It took us a while to figure out what to order but we ended up getting the jollaf rice with shrimp and plenty of plantains, the eru with fufu, the African meat pie, and tropical rhythm. The food was fantastic and definitely beat my prior experience of trying African food. It wasn't greasy or over/under seasoned, it was flavorful and well made. The portions were a pretty healthy size. I definitely plan on coming back and trying other things on menu. If you've never tried African cuisine, I'd highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Mama D's African Cuisine serves authentic Cameroonian cuisine that was founded by Chef Dorothy Wanki that was first opened in Alabama. Following up with Mama D's legacy her daughter Claudia opened up a second location In LA for the boiling pot of diverse population in SoCal to enjoy delicious African food. So hows Claudia's translation of Cameroonian cuisine? Chicken Jollof Rice W/ side of fried plantains $23: jollof rice, is a rice dish from West Africa. The dish is typically made with long-grain rice, tomatoes, onions, spices, vegetables and meat in a single pot. In this case my crew went with the chicken and we ordered fried plantains on the side. The rice that day was a little bit watery like jambalaya with all the juice according to my cousin. In the past he said the rice was a bit drier and that it was a lot tastier then. For my first impression of the jollof rice I gotta say it was absolutely delicious. The rice was PACKED with flavor and it was just so homey and I absolutely felt the love and care Claudia put into it. Moving onto the broiled chicken it definitely didn't disappoint as it was JUICY, TENDER, and full of flavor. The meat falls off the bone with little resistance. The habanero oil was DIVINE. I had to have each bite with a drop of habanero oil to elevate the flavor profile to the next level. Lastly we got the fried plantain, I loved how it had a crisp around the outer edges and the FLAVOR, it was sweet and a tad bit salty which made it so savory as a companion. Overall Mama D's is amazing, thank you Claudia for introducing me to Cameroonian food and I could really feel and taste the love and care you put into your food, and I saw first hand how hard you worked to put this dish on our table. Make sure you check out Mama D's if you're in the area.

Yelp
I really liked trying two completely new-to-me dishes here, and will be back to explore the huge menu. Both dishes were very rich and hit-you-on-the-head flavorful (this is a positive comment). They were packaged well for takeout, even the fufu, which was rolled up looking like a fat circular pat of butter. Both were quite salty as well, but that can be basically solved by using a lot of fufu, or rice, or whatever side you choose to scoop up your stew. Don't try to just eat it with a spoon; it's clearly not meant to be enjoyed that way. Think of it like a flavor concentrate you have to dilute. Oh, what did I get, you ask? The shrimp ndole with fufu and goat meat pepper soup with plantains. The ndole was my favorite; it was noticeably peanutty but not overwhelming, and the leaves had a flavor I'd never tasted before, maybe due to something inherent to them, maybe due to the underlying murmur of crayfish. The goat was also great, but SO rich that it was more suited to nibbling.

Yelp
I'm not gonna lie I wanted to try fufu because of TikTok. LOL But WOW the food was absolutely AMAZING. The food is to die for and you really can't go wrong. 10/10 in every way possible. The woman we were talking to was very helpful and recommended us the food!

Yelp
Owner is super sweet! She was very mindful when I told her I wanted to order a dish for a friend whose vegan, it was evident that she genuinely wanted my friend to experience the amazing african cuisine too! This type of food has been on my bucket list & I'm so happy to have had such a comfortable first experience. Staff was COVID friendly + outside dining was comfortable :) I ordered the okra soup w/ shrimp + fufu of course. will be making the 30 min. drive back down here
google avatar

Shandy A.

Yelp
I've had the suya and plantains twice and both times I loved it. Can't complain the atmosphere is very lovely I wish we could have sat and eaten there but unfortunately Covid prevented that. But I will diff be coming back wen I'm in the need of some Good African cuisine

Denise L.

Yelp
How disappointing I asked for chicken in okra gravy with foodie, 2 meat pies. let's begin on a position note, the meat pie was edible all else was TRASHED! The chicken was OLD, Reheated in microwave, dried out and tasted like a piece of rawhide. I didn't feel welcomed even though I said HELLO ASND SMILED upon arrival. I asked the young lady at the counter for assistance as I had experienced an excellent dish at a previous African eatery. She appeared to be bothered, unhelpful is putting it mildly. Horrible horrible ambience and stale dried out tasteless food. if they we're offering free food I will never be back!
google avatar

I. A.

Yelp
This place is legit!!! The puff puff were my favorite! They tasted just like the ones i had in Togo , Africa! The eru was bomb! And my chicken with jollof rice was on point!!! We will be back!

Yelp
Never disappoints. Authentic Cameroonian food that reminds me of home. Owner is delightful and communicates to manage expectations. The reality is that sometimes it will take 1hr + to get the meal ready so it is good to call ahead and get an estimate on when to leave your home. Can't go wrong with anything one the menu

Yelp
We were out of town going back home and decided to make a detour to get some African food. I wanted to try the ones in LA because the one in Fresno got some bad reviews. Yikes! I ordered take out over the phone and the lady that took my order was really nice and even joked with me about how high I wanted my spice level. Talm bout I'm tryna kill myself cus I told her to make it extremely spicy and to not be afraid because I love spicy food. Lmaoo.. Scale of 1-10 it's way passed that. I ordered egusi with beef that came with fufu. I also ordered eru which had more odd beef parts which I liked. That also came with fufu. I also love the fact they top off a habanero (or scotch bonnet?) to the dishes. And it came with complimentary puff puffs which was good to eat after taking bites of the pepper lol. Everything was neatly packaged and the food was outstanding. I will say, it had somewhat of a kick but not super spicy to me. I enjoyed everything. I really wanted to order some more food but man! One dish alone is expensive! I wonder if the ingredients are hard to get or if they're expensive or maybe it could be cus they work so hard pounding tf out the yams to make that consistency for fufu? Idk. But this place gon be digging into my pockets again the next time I'm out there. Lol cus I'm lookin forward to making another stop when in town and trying a different entree!
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
The restaurant isn't the easiest to get to from miracle mile, but the drive is worth it! I ordered the eru with fufu, chin chin, and shrimp jollof rice. Everything was SO tasty and not salty! I love spicy food, so I need to go back and try their goat pepper soup. The owners are very friendly and welcomed me with a smile. They left a cute note on the food too. Merci beaucoup!

Dena R.

Yelp
We drove out to try Mama D's because my daughter has been wanting to try fufu thanks to TikTok (Lol). The hours on the website state that they open at 11am on Saturday. They in fact don't open until 12pm which was a bummer since I drove from Riverside. They have two tables for outdoor dining, but it wasn't busy so we were able to enjoy our meal there. The staff was very nice and accommodating. They seemed to be training two girls, but that didn't hinder the service. Food is cooked to order so have a ginger beer and be prepared to wait a while. We tried the red stew with fish (delicious), egusi stew (good), ndole (good but a little salty). The fufu does not have a real flavor as it is used as a vessel for your stew so it soaks up that flavor. Overall, I enjoyed my first experience with West African cuisine and I will definitely be back.

Yelp
This restaurant is so amazing. I have only tried African food one time in my life before ordering from this place and they did not disappoint! Not only is it amazingly good you can tell it is all freshly made. I have ordered 3 more times already no matter how expensive it is lol. Also it is on postmates that's how I order

Yelp
First off I want to say the food was more than DELICIOUS! It was my first time trying African food and found the best spot drove all the way from Pasadena to LA, it was worth every DOLLAR.. Not a fan off the Fufu besides that the Egusi added beef, also Jollof rice with chicken.. AMAZING! Will come again.. The owner/cook treated us to a complementary dessert called "Puff puff" the kids loved it.. Good food, Great energy with Love

Yelp
Dear Ms. Claudia F. of Mama D's African Cuisine, I am trying to explain to you how on Febuary 5th, 2021 at 6:12 pm, my boyfriend purchased food at YOUR restaurant. I know it was your location, because I personally pulled up the address for my BF as well as seeing your online menu and there prices, which said that they were updated 3 weeks ago. Yet every price had $3 dollars added to each Item. I am very sorry but it was your restaurant, and staffs, Your food is good. I am not doing this to hurt anyone. I just wanted the owner to know so she could train and correct the attitudes / actions. Ps I am currently searching for the receipt which has all the information to back me up.

Yelp
I live downtown and I am always craving African food and there is none close by, but I search anyways. Today I was on door dash and hold and behold, I found this restaurant. Mamas D is Belgium/African restaurant with great quality. They gave really large amounts of food (you know Africans love large amounts of food). It was tasty and a good. I ordered Eru and Garri, It was delicious, This Was my first time having Eru. I also had goat pepper soup with boiled plantains, also great amounts and tasty (see pictures). Customer service was great, I called and the lady answered my questions very nicely. Pick up was fast and the lady (probably mama D) smiled the whole time. There was also a nice thank you note inside my order with a great surprise (extra item) which was delicious. I will be trying everything on the menu. I like this restaurant so far! Encourage people to try it.

Yelp
I drove past Mama D's and had been curious to try the food. A couple of days later I ordered the Chicken Jollof Rice and it was super flavorful and enough to feed 2 people and have some left over rice for breakfast tomorrow. I'm looking forward to trying more dishes.

Yelp
This was the perfect place to have Egusi and fufu! The cook was super sweet and we will definitely be back for Okra Stu!

Yelp
Came back a week later, yes it's that good ! This time I tried the Ndole, Jollof rice , and Okra soup and of course they did not disappoint ! I'll be back, again and again! Thank you

Yelp
Loved, loved, loved the food. I came here after seeing a review on YouTub. I ordered an hour in advance and drove up from the San fernando valley. Eru & fufu - Loved it. The best. Ndole- Soo good. Meat pie- got two when I got home my son wanted me to drive back for more Puff puff - Nut meg a little much of a flavor prefer it plain but that's a personal preference. Soya meat - Was great. All in all the food was gooood. I felt great and happy after eating all that good food. Definitely going back. Location: Restaurant big & spacious with potential but graffiti on windows from previous owner, guessing not been removed yet since the restaurant is new. Pehaps cover up with paper poster ads for now...? Nevertheless I drove 45 min to 1 hr to get the food and it was well worth it. I was all smiles for 2 days. Definitely going to be the only reason you see me in downtown LA. Loved, loved the food. Thumbs up to the cook

Yelp
Got the Jollof Rice and Ndole here. I really liked the Jollof Rice but the Ndole was also good. The sauce that came along with the Jollof Rice was spicy and incredibly tasty. Looking forward to coming back and trying more dishes next time.

Yelp
Currently on a pescatarian diet and this place delivers! I got the classic African lunch red tomato stew with shrimp and it was so delicious! If you enjoy a rich spicy tomato stew with some shrimp and rice, this is the perfect dish. The most friendly staff and patrons too! Will definitely be back the next time I'm in the area

Yelp
A "best kept secret" just outside of DTLA! We are going to Africa on vacation and wanted to try some African cuisine and this place did not disappoint! The staff were extremely friendly and cheerful and the food was delicious! Everything was made fresh and came in huge portions! The seasonings and spices were so tasteful and there were a lot of choices on the menu! All I can say is stop by and see (or taste) for yourself! Overall we had a very enjoyable experience!

Yelp
This review is LONG overdue because I found Mama D's maybe 12/29/20 & tried it shortly after (12/30/20). Let me tell y'all if you love African cuisine, or want some that takes you back to the motherland, go to Mama D's! Opened only months ago, I found Mama D's looking for a dish my man was craving from Cameroon that I've never gotten to try because nobody makes it. We ordered the Achu & the yellow soup he was craving so much, he loved! I just had a taste because I ordered the beef soya & dodo,, then we shared beignets & chin chin, everything was delicious (thank you Claudia )! My guy & I were very pleased with everything & since he approved the yellow soup, I finally got to try it the way it's supposed to taste! I finally got a taste of Cameroon

Yelp
Wow! We ordered this for lunch at work and it was a hit. We had the ndole, jollof rice with fish and beef soya. There was so much flavor in each dish and everything tasted so fresh. The only knock as it it's on the more expensive end but definitely worth checking out when you're looking for something authentic.

Yelp
I was craving home cooked food all day and I happen to randomly find Mama D's on DoorDash and was ecstatic to find an African restaurant on the east side of the city. I ordered Ndole with Shrimp and gari. Amazing. The portion is plenty and the personalized "thank you" in the delivery bag was very sweet was very thoughtful. I can't wait to order again, hopefully even eat at the restaurant once COVID restrictions are lifted.

Yelp
Food and service were excellent. Place looked very clean. Parking in the lot was a nightmare during the weekday lunch period. I recommend Street parking. I had the Jollof rice with shrimp, beignet and meat pie. Everything was delicious - very flavorful and light. The sauce they give with the meat pie is ADDICTIVE!

Yelp
This place is delicious!! I ordered on DoorDash and I got the Big Plate with rice, beans, shrimp and beef. I stared at the bowl in shock with every bite. So good! This will be my new addiction.

Yelp
Today is my ne of the happiest days of my life thanks to Mama D's African Cuisine! I was craving some fufu and okra stew and I found this place on a delivery platform! Yelp
Wow! So good. We were wanting African food but weren't anywhere near Inglewood, so picked up some takeout from here (online ordering worked perfectly). We got a few different things to try out the menu and everything was so flavorful and delicious. Sauces are so unique, meats all cooked perfectly. Every bite was just packed with flavor, regardless of the dish. Can't wait to go back and try more!

Yelp
Gd this place is delicious!!! I ordered the Eru with fufu and the flavor is off the wall. I called in before to ask which dishes had plantains (I'm allergic) and Claudia helped point out some things to try. The eru is savory with tons of veggies, beef, honeycomb, and feet. If you're nervous to try it, don't be. The meat is succulent and juicy as heck. It's perfect with the super soft fufu. Excited to come back and try their other dishes!! (They also deliver via doordash)

Yelp
Who knew I can find delicious authentic West African cuisine in the eastside of downtown. Yes, its a new place and signs aren't up yet but I had a ln opportunity to try their food. All I can say is Mama D knows what she is doing! Fresh and flavorful. I had Jollof Rice with chicken and freshly made puff-puff. They are both exceptional. Must try joint!

Yelp
I really should of taken a picture of my food to show how epic this meal was. In the last week I have eaten here 3 days in a row and I seriously want to go back for dinner!! The first time I tried Mama Ds I got post Age and ordered the egusi and okra with fufu. In all honestly it tasted very good but the texture was not for me. But I really loved the fufu and wanted to try it again because I like to try everything twice. So when I went back I ordered the red stew and fufu and mannnnnnnn it was so good! I got the poulet dg which was out of this world. I wish I got the name of the lovely woman that ho helped me but her warmth and kindness made the experience even better. Can't wait to come back. Also, ginger beer FIRE. Chin chin FIRE. And don't forget about the beignets!!

Yelp
This was my first time eating from this restaurant and it was fantastic!! I ordered the egusi with Chicken and sweet potato fufu, a side of jollof rice , and a side of plantains. It was all so delicious but my favorite was the jollof rice which literally tasted like perfection. I drove 30 min to come and support this newer business and it was definitely worth it. I will definitely be returning!!!!

Yelp
As an African, I actually feel insulted. This is the worst African food I've ever had in my life. Actually, it's not even African. Why does the egusi taste like eggs? Why was there no palm oil inside it. A barely spiced travesty. And the suya (it's meant to be spelled suya, not soya) is improperly spiced, and, to add insult to injury, had green and red peppers in it, which--no. Any basic West African cook can tell you suya should have onions and maybe tomatoes, not green peppers. Who cooked this? Are they even African? Have they even tasted African food? This tasted like the efforts of someone who looked at pictures of African food and then tried to gestimate. It's awful. I've literally never been so pissed eating a meal. I'd give this no stars if I could.

Yelp
We were excited to see great reviews of Mama D. Went there for lunch on Saturday. The meat pie was delicious. Love the hot sauce and brought extra to take home. However, the big plate chicken was disappointing. 4 tiny pieces of dried up overnight wings and small piece of thigh, greasy rice for $25. Our lunch bill totaled $51. Not worth it.

Yelp
Really glad we tried Mama D's today! We love trying new cuisines and it is great that there is African food near downtown LA now. Currently they are open for take out or delivery. There are two tables you can sit at outside while you wait. For 4 people to share we ordered: African Meat Pie, Puff Puff, Eru, Beef Soya & Dodo, Jollof Rice with Chicken, White Rice & Red Stew with Fried Fish with fufu. We had a little bit leftover afterwards. Our order took an hour to be made during lunch time as it is all made to order & very fresh but beware that it does take a while. We loved the African Meat Pie & Puff Puff. Absolutely delicious. The spicy sauce was great. I would definitely recommend trying both of these. The jollof rice, beef soya & red stew were also very tasty but they forgot our rice and because the fish has bones there wasn't a ton of meat. We did not personally like the Eru very much but we are glad we tried something new. Fufu is unique and when you learn about how it is made you know they are working hard! Claudia, the owner was very friendly as was the rest of the staff. Next time we are nearby we would definitely try again and order other things.
