The Best Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Chef Safia Munye called for justice for George Floyd after her restaurant burned down during the unrest of summer 2020 — with the help of a community fundraising campaign, she reopened it at a new Lake Street location. Here, Munye dishes up the same flavor-packed Somali cuisine she always has: beef sambusas; tender lamb and goat stew; chicken suqaar with ugali (a pillowy cornmeal dish served on the side) or beef with canjeero (fermented, crepe-like Somali pancakes). Italian influences appear in the form of lightly sauced pasta with fish; fresh juices are served at the counter." - Eater Staff

Eater Twin Cities’ Best Dishes of the Month: May 2024 - Eater Twin Cities

"A plate of pasta with salmon, where the fish peeks out from underneath sauteed onions and peppers. Originally serving tilapia, the salmon dish was hearty and comforting, with a banana balancing the hot green sauce drizzled over it. Also served were slow-cooked goat with rice and sambusa." - Justine Jones

While visiting Minneapolis we wanted to try Somalian food. Looking at the reviews, we ended up in Mama Safia's Kitchen. In one word, the experience was 'great'! Samosas were fresh and testy. I tried goat lever and Somalian bread. The servers were really friendly and explains things with passion. The restaurant was clean. The spicy tea was refreshing. Overall we were highly satisfied. We would like visit again.

Walked in and ordered to go. Sambusas and Goat with Rice. Order was ready fairly quickly. Came with a drink and piece of fruit. The chicken and beef sambusas were perfectly crispy and came with a spicy green sauce. The biriyani rice was cooked well. The goat was tender but could use a bit more flavor. Still all enjoyable!

A great stop after MOA. The beef steak biryani was outstanding. Perfect flavor. Excellent meat. And the most delicious sauce for spicing it up, if that's your pleasure. We also devoured a chicken & beef sambusa. Entrée with a drink as well. Don't skip this gem! I also loved the mural on the side of the building.

I came in with a group of my coworkers for lunch. We had never tried Somali food before and the server was very hospitable and explained all we needed to know to make our experience the best. She gave us complimentary soup which was delicious. Two of my coworkers got the mango smoothie and said it was delicious and creamy. I tried the Somali tea and it was so flavorful and delicious. We tried the beef and chicken sambusas and got several different dishes. We left very full and happy. Highly recommend!

This place is 100% hands-down delicious, and the pricing is very reasonable. The staff are super friendly and welcoming—really helpful if you're not sure what to order, and they're willing to modify the menu to fit your preferences. The only downside is that it can take a while for the food to come out, which isn’t ideal when you’re on a short lunch break. But when you have the time, it’s totally worth the wait.

I ordered the rice and goat meat, and it was incredible. The goat meat was so tender, just falling off the bone, and perfectly seasoned. That level of tenderness is something I’ve come to expect from good Somali restaurants, especially when it comes to goat, and Mama Safia’s definitely lived up to that expectation. The rice was aromatic and flavorful, and the portion size was generous—great value for the price. What really made the meal stand out was the combination of soup and green sauce that comes with the dish. The soup was light and comforting, a perfect way to start the meal. But the green sauce? That’s where the magic happened. It was spicy, fresh, and absolutely addictive. I love spicy food, and this hit the spot without being overwhelming. It added such a kick to the rice and meat—I found myself dipping every bite in it. The atmosphere of the restaurant was warm and welcoming, just like a home kitchen. You could tell the food was made with love and tradition. The service was friendly, and everything was served quickly, despite the busy lunch hour. If you’re in Minneapolis and want to try authentic Somali cuisine, I highly recommend stopping by Mama Safia’s Kitchen. It’s a hidden gem that deserves all the love it gets. I’ll definitely be coming back the next time I’m in town!

Came in cause was desiring a sambusa. Amazing. The chicken sambusa is so delicious, the right amount of spice. Do not even need the spicy sauce that compliments it. Nice home feel establishment. The parking can be a bit hectic contingent on the time of arrival. Really nice greeting upon entrance! Love love love and sambusa was so delicious I did not even leave the area and had to come back in and get some more. Baby 🤰🏽and I enjoyed it that much came back in five minutes later.

Yelp
This part of downtown's a bit quiet on a Sunday so I definitely lucked out by finding Mama Safia's via Uber Eats. The "most frequently ordered" feature was spot on, leading me to the excellent goat. You'll have a choice between pasta and rice, the pasta was awesome. The fiery green sauce goes with the sambusa; I'm not sure if the reddish sauce belongs to the entree, but both were great. On Uber Eats there's a "half" or "full" option, if you're one person the half is huge.

Yelp
I was visiting from LA and decided to try Somali food for the first time while exploring Minneapolis. Mama Safia's Kitchen did not disappoint with the food, quality, and service!! I ordered the goat meat with rice, sambusa, and mango juice. The goat was tender and tasty, the rice was well seasoned, the sambusa was perfectly crispy and flavorful, and the mango juice was refreshing! The customer service was on point, staff was very friendly and welcoming! Definitely check them out!!

Yelp
This was a very hearty and welcoming introduction to Somali food. Actually, hearty is probably an understatement, as my dish alone was large enough to feed at least two people. Outside of that, the chicken and rice dish was pretty good; the green sauce that is served with it compliments and enhances the dish's flavor considerably. Some of my chicken chunks were a bit tough and dried out, but the flavor was still present. I also ordered a sambusa and Mandazi for appetizers, as it's hard to beat a $2/piece price point. Of the two, I liked the Mandazi (think sweet bread) better; the sambusa was good, but the red onion overpowered the remaining ingredients in the savory pastry. Again, the green sauce tastes really well with the sambusa, so don't forget to ask for it if they don't remember to serve it. Lastly, the clean restaurant atmosphere and employees were really welcoming and accommodating. All in all, I had a good experience here.

Yelp
We visited Mama Safias Kitchen because of a YouTube we saw. The food was EVERYTHING! Fried chicken tasted as good as it looked, lamb was tender. We had plenty of rice and salad. Service was good. The server was very attentive and helpful. Will definitely visit again next time we come to Minneapolis.
