"Mama San Soul Shack, the beloved St. John’s counter-service restaurant and bar specializing in soul food with an East Asian twist, will shutter on September 20. Opened in August of 2015, the restaurant was popular with the St. John’s crowd for its rice bowls, fried chicken, a bar that included boozy slushies and house sodas, and its large front patio. Despite its popularity, it struggled financially, exacerbated by communication breakdowns between co-owner Andrew Boggs and chef Chris Hopkins. Hopkins eventually left, leading to the closure announcement. The restaurant will remain open until then with limited hours to allow patrons a final visit." - Alex Frane

Excellent food made with care by nice people. We loved the southern comfort food with Korean flare - the dishes were interesting and delicious. Hush puppies were huge and cooked perfectly which isn't easy to accomplish. We haven't had better hush puppies outside Tennessee! The fun house-made drinks were icing on the cake. Definitely check this place out!

New addition to my "must goto" list when in Portland. The catfish was tender, moist and flavorful with a light and crisp cornmeal batter. The seasoned fries were good, and not too greasy. The tartar sauce was creamy and tastes like any other. The collared greens tastes as good as my husband's. The extra seasoning on top was a little spicy but doesn't linger. I didn't pick this place FOR the hand dipped corn dogs, but I will return again and again for them. Paired with the homemade cheese sauce; YUM!! Also tried a moonpie for the 1st time, it was ok, must be a local thing. There are 4 off street parking spaces but plenty of on street (on a Saturday afternoon) parking. A good number of seats inside and out.

Doors were open, people were working, but no one acknowledged me. After a couple minutes, I walked outside to see I was 15 min early. I don mind cool places to eat but don't be too cool to talk to people in your space if all the doors are wide open. Korean BBQ chicken rice bowl was tasty. Sauce had a kick, kimchee seemed on point, would have preferred the dish was mixed rather than in separate piles on top of rice.

Service was friendly. Atmosphere is nice. Kinda over priced. Paid $23 for the meal in the picture. Didn’t get the extra sauces I paid for. Kinda bummed. Chicken was tasty. 🤷‍♂️

Great spot in St Johns for Asian/Southern yumminess. House made drinks, nice taplist and booze to round it out. Outdoor seating rain or shine.

Definitely hit or miss. Ordered the cat fish platter ($14) and it came with one small piece of fish and a boatload of fries. The fries were also a bit burnt. Very disappointed this time. Last time the food was great and fries were perfect. Consistent winners: chicken nubbins with pretty much any sauce and the Korean BBQ chicken rice bowl. Order those and you should be pretty happy. Wait times various widely but expect at least 15 minutes. Nice vibe and friendly staff.

In the restaurant the atmosphere is home like. You see the kitchen you smell the food and it's nice. Not a ton of dining in space so we normally do take out. Food speaks for itself, good flavor and I feel great after eating here.
