Mama Shelter Marseille

The best thing about staying here was the people - lots of helpful advice from the women on reception as I had to get a very early train from Marseille St Charles station and hadn't used Marseille's metro system before. They gave me a great map and a confidence boost. A good buzz in the bar/restaurant. A couple of niggles about the room - I ended up fixing a piece of cardboard over a light on the broken climate control that kept flashing through the night - but nothing major. Rooms are small but prices reflect that, I think. Am looking forward to staying again.

Location is great if you want to experience the “raw” side of Marseille. Very well located around great restaurants , bakeries and public transport. Direct bus to Calanques natura park ( Cassis ) and other places in the city. Rooms and very basic. Not super clean , but great bed and good bedsheets, airconditioned room with fridge. The food in the hotel is overpriced and not worth it. Eat outside and stay just for the night! Perfect.

After a long flight I waited 4-5 hours to get a room as they had none ready for early check in and could not possibly prepare a room any sooner in the 4-5 hours I waited (this is on a Monday!) I sat in the lobby waiting and received no information or updates from the staff. No attempt at hospitality. My friend was given a key to a room that was already occupied by another guest!! We were put in two different rooms because of issues, and both were filthy and faulty. Bless the team for moving us when we raised concerns that neither our tv nor safe worked in our first room and that our shower was leaking through the floor, but the next room was just as dirty. We had a blocked bathroom sink the whole stay that stank, and the room often additionally smelt like smoke due to people standing at the hotel bar smoking right outside our window. It's also very noisy in the evenings. Definitely wouldn't recommend if you have a young kid or just want to sleep at some point before 1am...disappointed, especially for the cost.

indeed cozy & modern hotel, yet like other dis-recommendations here, I would point out: keep low expectations concerning Mama Marseille. one turn-off by Mama as a chain are the hotels positioning. We've been visiting Mama Paris several years ago, where I noticed they pick their locations in bad suburban neighborhoods, or even scary criminal surroundings waiting to be Jenificated. As a small family of 3 we landed on Friday in Marseille at an early hour and the staff did not want to promise us early check-in on the phone call before ordering, and were not able to hand us keys before 14:00. This feeling of mis-effort or even worse: non-effort attitude would guide the team that served us throughout our one night stay, When my wife called me for missing liquid shampoo while bathing they insisted responding & defending their Eco-friendly moto: "this is what we have! We believe in Eco-friendly soaps". A pro active approach would offer us some kind of alternative which is not found in room. Or otherwise, some liquid shampoo from the nearby supermarket (it seemed I wasn't the first one to ask, cause they're in the process of re-assessment about adding shampoo too the room). Then, I tried to light the table lamp with no success and saw one electricity point on the table and one was under the bed...had to bend and scroll under it (to find that neither electricity points don't work for the lamp). This is where I found plenty of dust & dirt under the bed. Cleaning personnel did not clean well under the bed!!! would you accept it? I did NOT & went down again to the receptionist to show her what I grabbed from the floor - she pictured it and sent the photo to her boss. Haven't heard from non of them up to this date. I also complained they do not distribute sleepers for room use, the receptionist did not understand me. Only when I showed her, the one for sale they show in their vitrine lobby was she |willing to let me (only) one for use. Afterwards, taking my son for dinner at the (too dark - not enough light) restaurant I ordered nuggets & French fries for the kid. we waited too long (I almost wanted to cancel the order because of the wait) to find the French fries were burnt. I ordered another one, that came quickly this time and gladly deep fried not burnt. No sorry. No excuses. At checkout on Saturday after we paid for breakfast separately the receptionist tried to compensate us with a breakfast OTH, but again couldn't think out of the box and offer us with alternative compensation or cash in return, cause the boss wasn't on shift to do that for all the mistakes they did. Nevertheless she told me the boss will respond our complaints by e-mail....never got one!!!!

It was our first time Marseille and first time Mama Shelter and neither disappointed! The people working at reception are welcoming, the mixologist at the bar makes great cocktails, there are underground parking options, and the rooms are clean. Unlike some other reviewers, I thought the area is great: you have a lot of nice bars in the area, you can have a nice local breakfast at cafe La Muse or enjoy natural wines and veggie food in Winesucker x Mercato. No 5 stars for Mama Shelter, because bathroom products were too limited (had to buy our own liquid soap, but since we’re in Marseille this wasn’t difficult), and our room could’ve used a sitting area or couch to fill the empty space and make it more cosy. Overall the rooms could benefit from a TLC makeover, but the cleaning staff did what they could to at least make it feel fresh. This Mama is welcoming, and although she aged a bit by now, she still takes good care of her guests.

I actually love the chain but have been in better ones this one was a bit of a bummer the first room we had had problems with the toilet 🚽 but it was quickly changed the second room had the shower broken only the handheld shower worked. Everything was a bit out of maintenance the staff was friendly and breakfast was amazing the location could be better as well

Mama takes care of you. Mama loves you. Mama has good wifi. Mama has a restaurant. Mama....okay, you get where I'm going. This place really plays up the whole Mama thing. We stayed at Mama Shelter in late June for two nights, non consecutive. The rooms were very clean, and relatively comfortable. TV is via a mounted apple display but it works. Wifi is fast and reliable. My main complaint about the room is that the water smelled very strongly of sulfur coming out of the tap. On our second night there we had to be moved to another room. The restaurant is pretty good, especially breakfast. Dinner is good too but it is remarkably expensive for not fancy dining. There is parking downstairs. For some reason they put the pay station close to a wall that you then have to go around in order to get out. It's very hard to make that cut with anything other than a tiny car in time to beat the closing garage door. The staff was very nice and spoke multiple languages. I think the place is a tad much for the money but I'd stay there again.

Smartly designed boutique hotel makes for a great stay in Marseilles. Doesn't look like much on the outside, but the interior design and the rooms are well put together with an attention to detail and good amenities. The rooms are loaded with tech, with a large screen that offers everything from wifi code to touristic information. Front desk was super nice in advising restaurants and nice walks (about 15m walk from the pier, 5-10m from a super cool neighborhood filled with street art and world cuisine restaurants).

Anyone who is thinking of getting into the hotel industry should spend a few nights at this place. The level of attention to detail here is phenomenal. From the cool deconstructed denim aprons on the wait staff and the giant Mac screens in the bedrooms loaded with cool, free movies to the local vocabulary lessons on the concrete walls, no detail goes overlooked and the results are sheer perfection. In addition to a fab night's sleep in our hipster hotel our impromptu late afternoon lunch was much better than I expected. My dish of the day -- seared salmon served on top of a heap of sauteed zucchini -- was an excellent way to kick off a weekend of sun-filled fun. Plus that open air patio with the giant chess board and Pastis bar is pretty freaking cool. That said, I would have loved to have had the same hotel in another hood. Walking around that area at night had all of my native New Yorker antennae on high alert. There was probably nothing to fear, but the small, dark streets around the hotel weren't the most reassuring. Had I been traveling alone I would have felt really uncomfortable going to and from on my own.

This place is amazing and looks similar to the Paris hotel and restaurant. Amazing food through and through. Crowd is young and sexy.

I have to say that the place is great, the service is excellent and the food delicious. So why the "so so" rating? Well, I had made a reservation with the idea of having a romantic dinner with boyfriend. I picked a Sunday so there wouldn't be that many people. Although the aforementioned aspects were great, I got the famous corner table for two, which is stuck between the bathroom and the outside patio door, which means that we intermittently got a cold breeze from the outside, or the sounds of the noisy hand-dryer in the toilet (luckily, no smells...). Last, but not least, there was a whole family having dinner at this place (why!?), with a small child and a baby, both of which took turns crying and whose parents just simply ignored them and kept on sipping their drinks. The waitstaff didn't do anything. So, overall, it seemed like a great setting for a romantic dinner, but then, it wasn't. At all.
