Just discovered Mamali, and I have to say—it’s something really special. It just opened up where Cigars used to be, right on that little triangle at Sixth Avenue and Christopher Street in the West Village. There’s no sign up yet, but you seriously can’t miss it—it feels like a natural fit in this iconic corner of New York.
What makes this spot even cooler is the history under your feet. Mamali is right next to the Hess Triangle—literally NYC’s smallest piece of private property. There’s this tiny mosaic in the sidewalk that says:
“Property of the Hess Estate Which Has Never Been Dedicated for Public Purposes.”
It’s a wild piece of protest history from over 100 years ago—and it’s still there.
Even more powerful is the LGBTQ+ significance of this location. Just steps away is the Stonewall Inn, where the 1969 uprising sparked the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. The triangle is part of the Stonewall National Monument, and you can absolutely feel the energy and importance of this place. It's more than just a cafe—it’s part of a living, breathing legacy.
Now, about the food and drink…
I stopped in for coffee, and it was outstanding—rich, smooth, clearly made with care. Then I learned they specialize in Georgian wine (yes, the country Georgia), which is actually the birthplace of wine, with archaeological evidence going back 8,000 years. They source from small vineyards, with handpicked grapes, and every bottle tells a story.
I couldn’t resist the food, either. You have to try the:
Georgian cheeseboat (khachapuri) – warm, gooey, and totally addictive
Veggie platter with fresh cornbread – super flavorful and satisfying
Signature Georgian salad – fresh, crisp, and perfectly seasoned
Everything is made with so much love and authenticity, you can taste it in every bite.
Mamali isn’t just another new spot. It’s a welcoming place grounded in tradition, right in one of the most meaningful and historic corners of New York City. Definitely worth the visit.
