Where to Find a Marvelous Mid-Week Lunch in Portland

"This North Williams restaurant, which the owners describe as “Middle Eastern,” offers a number of strong lunch options, from meze platters to share with coworkers to pita-wrapped sandwiches stuffed with juicy lamb shawarma or falafel. Mamma Khouri’s also offers things like Turkish coffee to perk up mid-work day, as well as hard-to-find Lebanese and Syrian smoothies for an on-the-go treat." - Rebecca Roland, Brooke Jackson-Glidden

The Best Restaurants and Bars on North Williams Avenue in Portland, OR | Eater Portland

"Regulars sip rose-scented smoothies and licorice-y arak at this family-owned Syrian and Lebanese restaurant, where tables support tender braised lamb shanks and pita flatbreads alongside an array of meze. Lamb shawarma is particularly nice here, whether it arrives on a plate with rice and toum or in a sandwich well shellacked with tahini and hummus. Dessert here is a must." - Nathan Williams

Google
Mamma Khouri’s is my favorite Middle Eastern restaurant anywhere. I feel happy just sitting there, waiting for my meal. The staff is so kind and the food is divine! It’s flavorful and delicately spiced, with generous portions. Everything is good, but the lamb shank stew is really special. Mamma and Baba Khouri have created an oasis of peace and culinary delight in a city renowned for great restaurants. If I could give 10 stars, I would. Addendum: My doctor wants me to eat less meat. Fortunately, middle eastern food has plenty of tasty vegan options. The falafel and hummus are excellent, and the baba ghanouj is special. Most importantly, I always leave happy. I can’t stop coming back!

We had a wonderful experience at Mama Khouri’s! The food was fresh and flavorful. I have dietary restrictions and the staff was very understanding and accommodating. The prices are also reasonable. We can’t wait to be back!

Google
We will be back! The cocktails we ordered - a Turkish Coffee and a Zatar Margarita - were delicious, as was the food. The veggie stuffed grape leaves were very flavorful and definitely some of the best I've had in PDX, as was the tabouli that came with the mezza. The dessert we ordered (pancake stuffed with creme and drizzled with rose syrup) was really rich and tasty, but not too sweet. Our server, Jules, was lovely and checked in just the right amount. The outdoor covered patio in front is very large (shared with Kayo's ramen next door), so it has great coverage for rainy days when you still want to bring your doggo along to lunch or dinner.

Google
Husband and wife duo at Mama Khouri’s have created a genuine Syrian restaurant that honors ancient traditions of hospitality, fresh ingredients and simplicity to present how Syrians take pride in their kitchen. The prices are reasonable and the ambience serves to support the main attraction: good food with generous portions. This is on my top 3 restaurants for the Portland area, because they honor their traditions and don’t reinvent good food with a new identity. Take a moment and ask the Chef on how they manage to present their dishes with just the right aromas !

Google
Stopped in for an early dinner at Mama Khouri’s and had an awesome experience. The food is very clearly authentic Syrian/Lebanese and our waiter (who I also think may be the owner) was super nice and hospitable. We ended up ordering the tabbouleh salad, 3 piece falafel, hummus, za’atar pizza and the mujadra meal with a side salad. Everything was delicious and just how I would expect it to be (I am Lebanese so I tend to be a bit more critical of Lebanese restaurants). Overall I highly recommend Mama Khouri’s and would definitely be back to eat here again.

Google
We had the spanikopita, chicken shawarma platter, and baklava. The food was extremely flavorful and well-seasoned. The baclava was probably the best version of the dish we have tried anywhere. The atmosphere was casual and pleasant though the door alarm was quite loud and became annoying for those of us sitting by it.

Google
I’ve walked by this place a few times and each time it wasn’t very busy. Portland is missing out this was fantastic! Great food all around. Spinach pie was good but the spanakopita was next level. The Gyro was also fantastic the meat is clearly homemade. All the sauces are fire! The chicken shawarma plate came with some insane garlic sauce that is amazing. Highly recommend you try it.

Google
This place was worth crossing the river to dine. Everything was cooked perfectly, the lamb was the best I've had, the pita was excellent, and the hummus was so good I had to stop before I overstuffed myself. Lovely little spot, and I highly recommend it.

Rachell B.

Yelp
Kefta Kabob Plate delicious, especially impressed with the rice & spices - done just right. Hummus was solid and pita bread was even better, tabouli was superb! Great relaxed atmosphere with good outdoor seats. Service was attentive and very friendly, thank you!
google avatar

Jan C.

Yelp
Good food, nice place, outstanding service. The kebabs were delicious, the shawarma was yummy, they make the rice just right, the tabouli was nice and lemony (superb flavor profile), the spinach pie was an interesting choice. Good falafel balls, the hummus was OK too. The gyro only gets a passing grade. We've come here before, and we'll surely come again.
google avatar

Eddie C.

Yelp
The Gyro is not good I will not come here for that but I will come back for I will try the food but the French fries was outstanding delicious Coca-Cola

Andrea A.

Yelp
Ordered takeout via Uber eats. Arrived hot and fresh, well packed and delicious!! Ordered a variety of things- lentil soup, meat metza, Jebna and the Baba's special sandwich. Everything was delicious!

Yelp
The staff was extremely friendly & the food was absolutely amazing. We had wonderful humous & amazing falafel. The shawarma & tabouli were delicious. I'll absolutely be back... for another Arak. :)

Yelp
Again... I had A fabulous meal at Mama Khouris. This is a family run restaurant that really knows how to put love in their recipes. Every bite is exquisite. Presentation is fabulous. I highly recommend the mezza platter in which you can have a taste of a potpourri of Middle Eastern delicacies. The service is wonderful and attentive. A very friendly lovely place to eat. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Humos & chicken were the spotlight items! Friendly service & chill ambiance. What we got: Lahme Bi-ajeen Combo Meat Plate
google avatar

Scott G.

Yelp
The hummus and home made pita are to die for. The lamb shank and rice was awesome too. Service is great and the venue is ok. Had to take off one star for because my wife's lamb kabob was pretty tough. Check it out.

Yelp
The food here was delicious and came out pretty quickly. The waitress was also super attentive and made sure to answer and questions we had about the menu. The inside is a decent size and lots of bright light coming in from the windows. There's also outdoor seating with a hearing lamp for the cold days coming up.
google avatar

Sean R.

Yelp
Very good food. lol I could end the review there honestly. We tried a Combo Meat Plate, I enjoyed all the meats, especially the beef/lamb (but I always do). Also tried one of their Mammas Special Sandwich, but I would say it's more of a burrito for sure w/ a toasted tortilla or thin pita. Lots of fresh parsley flavor and tender meat. And it is quite hefty too. Inside vibes are kind of like a clean coffee shop.
google avatar

Yelp
Family owned, family friendly, tasted like home cooking! Not the most appetizing look when opening the to-go tray but at least packaging is recyclable. Shawarma $16.95 ~ packed with tasty flavors, a little kick, good rice texture. Puffed pita bread was fresh & chewy fun to eat.

Yelp
Been here a couple times now and am super happy to have a great Medi food option so close. We've gotten similar items both times we've gone, and the chicken shawarma is outstanding. My wife was quoted saying 'this is the best falafel I've ever had in my life.' While it had a bit more cumin than I would like, they were cooked perfectly, still moist and pillowy inside, with a thin crispy shell around the outer. The hummus and baba have been extremely fresh, and the grape leaves a nice snack too. It's awesome they offer GF pita, and appear to make them in-house and fresh to order as well. The regular pita was pretty good, but no match for Nicolas'. Service has been very friendly, though a little slow at times. Most recent visit our server was also the chef cooking dinner, who I assume was one of the owners, and seemed very vested in our good experience. Overall a great spot I'll be a regular at. My only knock is that the lighting is cold and unwelcoming. The spotlights on the tables from above feels like you're in an interrogation room.
google avatar

Ankita T.

Yelp
I'd like to see them more busy coz their food is great! Their chicken shawarma is bursting with flavors!! I did crave more of a rose flavor from the mulberry rose drink. The interiors are so cute, I enjoyed it thoroughly as a solo diner.

Yelp
Some of the best Mediterranean in PDX imo. Wonderful flavors where the meat seems to have been marinated extensively(you can taste then herbs and spices through each bite). The meat itself was well cooked perfectly(juicy and tender). Even the hummus was pretty special by itself. My only nits would be I wish there were more veggies on the kabobs. And frankly the pizza style dishes don't appeal to me. I'd prefer to see some more classic dishes like Moussaka on the menu. But... the flavors were so good compared to other Mediterranean I've had in PDX so 5/5!

Dave M.

Yelp
Went there based on all the positive reviews and so glad we did. We started off with bread (complimentary) and toon sauce. The bread (freshly made) was wonderfully light and airy and the toon was packed with flavor. My wife got the falafel sandwich and I got the chicken kabobs and (again) packed with flavor. Large portions. Excellent service and I thought the venue was good. We will be back.

Yelp
OMGGGGGGGGGG. This place is absolutely BOMB. Great portion sizes. Every bite was so flavorful and packed FULL of the goodness. I'm obsessed and can't wait to come back. The MEAT MEZZA with extra grape leaves - my absolute to-die for. Can't wait to come back!!

Yelp
I took my 5 year old here for dinner on a Friday night. The outdoor seating was really pleasant and we could watch the people walk by on Williams. We got the fries and hummus for our main meal. The fresh pita came out warm and it was delectable! For dessert we got the K'taef Bil Ashta... the waitress reported that their restaurant is the only one in Portland serving it. Don't miss it! It was the highlight of the meal. The waitress was very prompt and super sweet with my daughter. We will be back!!

Yelp
I'm from LA. Looking for a good Mediterranean spot and chose here. Its top notch good, much better than some places in California. Great environment and nice staff. Id highly recommend the Meat Combo Plate (pictured)

Yelp
We came here a few months ago and thought that the food was pretty solid, but the service was extremely slow. There was only one other table but it took about 20 min before we could put in our order and then about 40 minutes to get our food. We recognize that this is a sign that they really pride themselves in making fresh food, which my partner and I really enjoyed our chicken gyro and lamb gyro. But my friend with the meat plate and rice said there was too much rice and part of her plate was lukewarm. I think they can definitely work on their service though we felt that it was a nice quaint restaurant to enjoy our food in, since it was quiet and unassuming.

Yelp
I happened to stumble upon this place after attempting to visit another restaurant down the street that had an enormous line. Not wanting to wait, I stopped in here and was pleasantly surprised with how few people were present. The vibe was quiet and calm, there were a total of 3 people working, and the woman at the front was very sweet. Within 10 minutes or so, our food was brought out and the Mamma's Special was incredible. I had never been served a dish that looked like the one I had had gotten and I actually really annoyed it's style: eating with your hands like a burrito or with a fork and knife was so easy and created nearly 0 mess. The flavors were fantastic, it was a perfect portion size and was worth the money. My girlfriend got the coffee since I don't like coffee and she decided it was a bit too strong but that's perhaps a preference issue. Overall, though, the place was great and a nice detour to our intended stop. Definitely go here!

Yelp
Fresh made to order goodnesses!!! Definitely a must try neighborhood spot and sorta hidden so easily missed but fresh flavorful and deliciousness!!! Highly recommended the Kofta, Taboulie, Humus and stuffed grapes!!!

Daniel M.

Yelp
Sad falafel. Uninspired. Its hard to find good middle eastern food in Portland and saw a lot of positive reviews. On to the next one
google avatar

Yasmine E.

Yelp
simply put, BOMB. hilda literally sets the bar where it should for being so pleasant and making my 1st experience so delightful. and can't forget, mama, the yummiest shawarma in town. shoukrun hilda and mama khouri, i will be back.

Yelp
The flies!!! Fly here, fly there, fly fly everywhere!!! I think it goes without saying that most people enjoy a fly free restaurant. Magneto was just the day we decided to stop in but they left the front door propped open and there were flys everywhere. I'm not to picky so I ate and the food was good. However, I can't post a positive review when there are Fly here, fly there, fly fly everywhere!!!

Yelp
Everytime I purchase a Groupon to a restaurant I don't expect much because typically they aren't very good or it's a new restaurant trying to recruit clientele. Not at this place!. Was promptly greeted and open seating. Server was so sweet and friendly. We had already looked at the menu online prior to arriving so we knew what we were gonna order. Started off with the hummus appetizer and freshly baked pita bread (best part)! Ordered the chicken kabob plate with salad and garlic sauce which essentially is a grilled chicken salad. Complimented our meal with a yummy lemon drop martini and this cheesy bread pastry type of dessert. Total bill was 43 bucks AFTER our Groupon of 20 bucks was applied, not bad! Another plus is it wasn't busy but this place should be after our awesome and tasty meal, such a hidden gem!
google avatar

Gus M.

Yelp
Ordered the mezze which was a great option to share for two. They also serve fresh made pita bread from their oven. The kipper balls were also good. We'll come back again and plan to order food to go to try other items. Owner was very friendly and working in the kitchen.
google avatar

Yelp
Easily my favorite Middle Eastern restaurant in Portland...probably anywhere. The food is outstanding. Try the Arnabeet. It changed my life and my perspective on cauliflower. The desserts are also incredible. I suggest...all of them. Finally, if you need help picking something out, ask your server. They're super helpful!

Yelp
Amazing Mediterranean food north of downtown. Truly a family owned and operated business. Mom and dad ate Lebanese/Syrian. Food tastes amazing. Service is provided by the daughters who are very kind. Decor is cute and spacious. Indoor is white and chic. Covered outdoor is airy and warm, with heaters. Will definitely be returning. Might be the best Mediterranean food I've had in the PNW.
google avatar

Sherry M.

Yelp
Husband, baby, and I were actually in the area for another restaurant, but their hostess wasn't very friendly and said the wait time was going to take 40+ minutes. It was almost 90° outside so we weren't going to wait. We just walked around and saw this place. Tried it on a whim and it did not disappoint. We had Momma's Special Sandwich, Chicken Shawarma Sandwich and a basket of fries. Everything was fresh and flavorful, even the fries! Yummy food, friendly staff, and good portions made it a good dining experience.
google avatar

Yelp
Big fan of their Meat Mezza! If you love variety, this is the option for you. It came with Chicken Shwarma, Kafta Kabob, Falafels, Hummus, Baba Gahnous, Tabouleh, Meat Grape Leaves, and Pita bread. Everything was delicious and this was a takeout. The Chicken Shwarma and Kafta Kabob looked dry at first but were super tender and flavorful; especially the Kabob. Hummus, Baba Gahnous, and Tabouleh were fresh; loved the lime in all of these which balanced out the creaminess of the dish. Never had a Meat Grape Leave before but I'm a fan! The Falafels definitely weren't at their peak freshness but it just made me want to go back and dine in at this place. All the components were well-packaged and separated for delivery. Super glad I tried this spot out.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Great food, great service! Chatted with the owner for a bit, very nice guy. I got the Lentil Soup, Vegan Mezza both were very good!

Fairy S.

Yelp
WOW! That's what I said while I was eating the creamy, delicious lentil soup. It was pure perfection. Then the falafels, crispy on the outside and perfectly seasoned on the inside. The hummus and baba were so smooth and tasty - the friendly service was top notch. We sat outside and there were so many options for us. I love this place. We will go there again and again.
google avatar

Ariel W.

Yelp
Ordered the meat mezza, lamb shawarma sandwich and the spinach pie. The kafta kabab was seasoned wonderfully and loved the lamb schawarma sandwich. Staff was also friendly and attentive.

Yelp
Super cute family owned restaurant serving healthy mediterranean options. We've been wanting to try this place after walking past it a couple times down the street and seeing people coming in and out. Our waitress here was super friendly and the whole family seemed to come out and bring out our dishes which was so nice to see. For a dinner for two we split: - Tabouleh - Lamb Shawarma Sandwich - Chicken & Lamb Shawarma Plate - Knafe - Lebanese Soda (Mulberry and rose water with soda) ___________________ I've never had lebanese soda so it was a must item to try this visit. The mixture seemed to be more floral in the taste but super light. I can see how it could be popular in the summer when it's hot. The tabouleh was OK but had more parsley than expected. Still a nice option if you want to start off your meal with something light. To move on to our mains I would probably pass on the lamb shawarma sandwich next time. The meat was good but it became a little messy to eat with each bite. I would highly recommend the chicken & lamb shawarma plate as it was nice to taste the meats separate from the sauces and veggies. The plate was a good option to get as well if you want to have the rice with your dish. Super filling and you can get sauces to dip on the side as well. I also have never had knafe before but I've always wanted to try it after seeing a couple food bloggers have this abroad. It met the expectations I had and is really like a dessert cheese in a wonderful rose syrup. Would recommend this if you want something different than the standard Baklava. We also had leftovers and accidentally left them and our waitress ran to bring it over to us. So nice and thank you!
google avatar

Julia G.

Yelp
I ordered the meat mezza. Many things were off. First, I asked what sauce comes with it, tahini or tzatziki, and the server said both. The food came, and the dolmas were a really dark almost black color and were hard. It tasted like it had been deep fried, with the grape leaves almost indistinguishable. They were not good. Then, there was no tahini. The falafel was dry, and I asked the server for the tahini, and she said that it was 95 cents--she was mistaken, no tzatziki or tahini comes with the mezza. I guess dry falafel is how you are supposed to eat it. On pita. Dry. I don't know why this restaurant is highly rated. There are fantastic middle eastern places in Portland, and I'll be going to one of those.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
I've been searching for a replacement to the delicious and consistent taste as Riyadh's. This place comes as close as I've found. The chicken mezzanine plate was awesome. Delicious hummus, tasty chicken.
google avatar

Judy B.

Yelp
I LOVE Mamma Khouri's. Everything I've ever ordered is spectacular. The food, omg I dream about it. Mamma's special is a must! Though my husband always orders veggie and he loves it as much as I do, The people there are sweet as pie. So five stars 100%. However I want to give one suggestion to them, respectfully, and that is to not clean with whatever cleaning product they use, I think it's Fabuloso. Whatever it is, the cleaning smell is so overwhelming that I've never been able to sit inside. It's the most chemical and unappetizing smell to me personally. I have a feeling this may be the case for others too, as the inside is almost always empty when I go, even though it's super cute in there. I always eat outside or get it to go. I don't mind but would love to be able to sit indoors as well.

Ryan B.

Yelp
Got take-out here and dine in. Had the chicken shawarma and kabob take out and it kept so well taking it home, was amazing. Dining in I had the lamb shank in a lemon stew, it was is a must try and I will be coming back for round 2. The service and ambiance made for a perfect dining experience and is a new favorite spot for me.
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
This place was fantastic. I have only eaten here once but I will be back. The service was great the take out food I ordered was ready in 15 minutes. The best schawarma I have ever had. Everything was really fresh and tangy. There was outdoor and indoor seating. I am looking forward to coming back and trying some other offerings.
google avatar

Thomas M.

Yelp
There is no better Kibe in portland. Or Lebanon. Or Brazil. Or anywhere! Great food, even better service from this family run place. We keep coming back and bringing more friends and family!
google avatar

Jeana C.

Yelp
I got the chicken kabob plate. The chicken and hummus were pretty good. Not very much chicken and The salad was so so, they put the hot chicken on top of the salad so it was mushy and wilted when I got it and I live literally a 3 min walk away from the restaurant. Got a $5 Coke that was for a child and had about 5 sips of Coke. A dollar a sip is asinine. Photos to show. I ordered lentil soup for an extra $10 and got a 1/4 bowl of soup maybe half depending on the size of the bowl but it was RIDICULOUS how little lentil soup they gave me for that much money. I've gotten better value at an expensive steak restaurant. To make matters worse the soup was 75% potatoes! Wth? It is a terrible value for the money. I paid almost $40, picked it up myself and I was still hungry when it was all gone. Terrible for a restaurant if you ask me. I'm posting photos and I will continue to write reviews because the audacity of restaurant owners in Portland charging so much for so little is outrageous and I can't believe people here pay such a high price for just a little bit of food that is ok at best. It's not inflation. It's greed. I did some research and discovered that they have raised their prices at least $2 per item in the last 11 months. So during a pandemic when people are out of work, sick at home they are being over charged for very little food, is horrific if you ask me. Way to support your community. Ugh. I won't be back I don't like getting ripped off.
google avatar

Toby L.

Yelp
Family owned restaurant that serves fresh and delicious food. The pita breads are absolutely fluffy and come with puffy air bubbles in them! The Lahme was delicious, and not greasy as many fast style restaurants will do. The dining area is clean and the staff is super nice. We were thankful for such a good meal after a 3 hour roadtrip.
google avatar

Rachel A.

Yelp
Wow! We just got Mamma Khouri's delivered for the first time and my husband and I are blown away! I got the Chicken Shawarma on a bed of hummus and the Cauliflower and my Husband got the Lamb Shank Stew. All was just fantastic! The prices are not cheap but here you really get what you pay for - quality! Also the Pita (more like pita meets lavash) is yummy! You will not regret trying this place. We'll be ordering again!
google avatar

Yelp
Came for some drinks and a snack. The servers were all super attentive and friendly. My grape leaves were warm and delicious. Everyone was very happy with all their food options. Must come back for more tasty foods!

Yelp
Awesome Mediterranean food. Prices are very reasonable and the restaurant is a nice little spot to eat and have a drink or two.
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
I've ordered the lamb shawarma a couple times. It's really good. Not much else to say. Prices are nice too.

Kelsey H.

Yelp
I can't believe when I walked in tonight no one was in here. A new favorite restaurant of ours in portland. It's a family owned and run restaurant. They were sweet and helpful. I got it to go and it was made so fast and my fiancé and I didn't even sit down when we got home--we took it out and just stood around the table eating (one cause we hadn't eaten all day) and two because it was delicious! Will def be coming back here and will probably eat in the restaurant too because the ambiance was cozy. I can't even take a photo because it's empty boxes now.
google avatar

Yelp
Family owned and absolutely amazing food! Can't say enough good things about this place!!!

Steven S.

Yelp
Not only would I come back, this is a place i'd take my friends to if they were visiting from out of town. And if i had friends. Hummus, pita and toum (garlic sauce) are outstanding.
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic middle eastern cuisine that offers/ clearly labels gluten-free items (and there are lots!). I've had their take out and dined in here; dining in is more fun and the food comes out quickly/ deliciously. Take out while delicious doesn't offer as much stuff (for instance the lamb schwarma comes with pita bread in house but delivery doesn't offer it) but it's still very tasty food!
