Yelp
So I'll preface this with a bit about me. I've worked in the restaurant business for 15 years, in both fine dining and fast-casual establishments. When you work in the industry for so long, you kind of brush off poor experiences, especially given the way things have been since COVID.
I also am not a "yelper". In fact, this may be the first restaurant review I've ever left, because it was a special experience.
After a day of walking around Manayunk with my wife and child, we decided to stop by Manayunk Brewing for a quick dinner. We were greeted by a friendly hostess, and sat on the deck. For a Sunday afternoon between lunch and dinner time, it was not very busy, perfect for us and our child. There was plenty of staff to accommodate the small crowd, one server for every 3-5 tables.
We were sat, and 30 minutes pass without even a glass of water placed on the table or a server saying hi. "No big deal, it happens" I say to myself. A minimum of four servers are working the sections around us, bussing tables as soon as a guest stands up to leave, re-setting, passing drinks, the like. Clearly, the old "turn and burn" is a very important concept here.
So I say something, nicely of course, to a passing server. "Hey, sorry to bother, just wondering if you could tell me who the server is for our table today". The young man says "I'm so sorry, I'll get someone to you right away". Again, no big deal, it happens.
Another 20 minutes pass now, with tables being bussed, food being dropped all around us, and still not a glass of water.
Now going on an hour of watching other guests enjoying themselves, and at this point seeing the entire menu on everyone's tables except ours, my wife and I decide to leave. "It would be rude to ask twice, right? Maybe it's just not our day."
On our way out, I ask to speak with a manager (not being a Karen, just wanted them to know of the slip up so maybe another guest at table 54 wouldn't be ignored completely next time).
The woman at the hostess stand says with a snap "well, I'm the manager". We explain the situation, not really looking for anything, and she says "I'm sorry, I'll talk to them in the back".
Now, like I said, I've managed restaurants for a long time. Even if a restaurant is busy (which it was not), you touch the table, offer a water, and come back when you can. And even more, when a guest WALKS OUT of your restaurant after wasting an hour of their day sitting at an empty table, you usually try to right the wrong in some way. "Please, sit down, I'll expedite your order", or "I'm really sorry for your awful experience, do you want to order your meal to-go so your family can at least eat tonight?".
But alas. Manayunk Brewery wanted a Yelp review from me it appears. The first one from little old me in a VERY long time.
I've never been left speechless by atrocious service, but the whole experience was so awkward and poorly handled I'm still feeling weird about it three days later.
Manayunk Brewing will be busy regardless of my experience, and regardless of my way too long Yelp review. They will make money because of their location. But please just know, from management down, they don't care if you have a good time once you pay the man in the lot $15 for parking.
It's a shame, because all we wanted was something to eat and drink, but it was made abundantly clear at every step of the way that we were not welcome.
