Manchu Brings Its Famous Chicken Wings to Richmond, Virginia | Eater New Orleans

"Having expanded to Richmond’s Northside after more than a year operating a food-truck offshoot, Marvin Nguyen opened the Richmond location this week with his parents Kevin Nguyen and Jenny Cao, and his mother—who worked on the food truck—serves as chef; Nguyen spent about four months in New Orleans studying and doing kitchen work to learn the recipes, from cooking fried rice and chicken to marinating. The Richmond spot will serve the original’s famed chicken wings along with po-boys, gumbo, and Vietnamese specialties while Nguyen experiments with new recipes and expands the menu, but unlike the New Orleans location it will be takeout only (no convenience store), and there’s no word yet on whether they’ll serve yaka mein." - Clair Lorell

Can’t believe we found real NOLA style eats in RVA! This spot is sooo good and definitely a hidden gem. The chicken wings were super well seasoned and the shrimp poboy was the best I’ve had outside of New Orleans. The portions are also incredible for the price and top of that, the service was so warm and welcoming. 10s are all around, we will definitely be back!

This was my first time at Manchu and I will be back. My wife and I ordered the Manchu wings with the mambo sauce. The wings and fries were both seasoned well. We also ordered a side of chicken and beef gumbo. It was sweet and we prefer a savory flavor for our gumbo. That being said, their gumbo was just ok. The guy who took our order was extremely nice and we always appreciate great service!

I probably come here about once a week 😭 the man who takes the orders is so sweet and attentive I come so much he remember my name . He is always smiling and greets guest with a positive attitude. The food is amazing I've tried the fish , wings , fried rice , Cajun fries and salad . I have never been disappointed and everything has always been fresh and delicious. The mambo and buffalo sauce are my favorites. You definitely get your money's worth coming here great food and great customer service 😉

Google
The chicken was seasoned and fried well, reminded me of home. The only reason I gave 4 stars is bc some of the wings were really small, but everything was good. Oh and the mambo sauce was a good addition.

Google
The quickness and quality is unreal.. In the photo, I order a Chicken Philly & Cajun Fries… it was really really good for the price, they give you a big amount for what you pay rather than Slay Burger around the corner. This place gave me a memorable experience while eating… I will continue to support this business 💯💯🤙🏽🤙🏽

Google
First time eating here. I gave them 2 stars to be generous. They claim to be New Orleans style but Nola doesn't have put po-boys on hoagie buns and half fill them. When you order a po-boy in Nola it is so full it is enough for two...the bread is much longer and is a specially ordered french bread just for Nola po-boys. I ordered Philly cheese steak, a shrimp sandwich, and wings. I dare to call either a po-boy. The cheese steak should have come with cheese, but there was no cheese just some kind of sauce. The wings were ok because they were seasoned but could have been seasoned more. The size of the wings were small. So instead of them using actual wings those were wingetts. For the price these should have been full size wings. That is misleading to say you have wings but you're serving wingetts. The shrimp sandwich had a lot of shrimp but the shrimp didn't have taste and again it was on a hoagie bun. There is a distinct taste to a real po-boy, because of the bread alone. Most of all, I really hate for restaurants to claim they serve a particular type of food and they don't. This is just a tactic to get customers which is their option but don't try to charge an arm and leg when the food isn't what you claim it is. Take it from me this is NOT Nola food because I am a true New Orleanian. You are speaking of the one in the lower 9th ward. I will try it.

Google
I ordered on Doordash and everything was tasty. Thanks for a great meal!

Google
Crispy, juicy wings. They are perfectly cooked. The sauce that comes with them is delicious. So excited to have this place in the neighborhood. Their banh mi was delicious as well and extremely filling. Shredded chicken with very fresh carrots and cucumbers. There is some sort of aioli on here this is going to be a problem because it's so addictive. I also had their fried rice and Cajun fries. Both were okay. I will definitely get the fries again. Hopefully they add a little more Cajun seasoning the next go round. The atmosphere is what you would think of for a take out place. The back seemed clean and lively from what I saw. Employees were friendly and looked like they were having a good time which is awesome. Hopefully, as they get more business, they decorate the interior some more. Overall, a great spot!

Yelp
The wings were crispy and a little spicy. The garlic sauce tasted a little fishy... I'm not eating that anymore but the version of mambo sauce that they have was very good. The beignets tasted like they were straight out of New Orleans... 100000/10!!! They were amazing!!! And the customer service was soooooo good!!! Super friendly!!! We will go back to try other things

Yelp
This place never disappoints! I've been here multiple times, and the food and service is always top-notch. I usually go for their chicken banh mi sandwich because they make a FANTASTIC and authentic banh mi. Super flavorful. Their fries are great as well! I really like their Cajun fries. And they beat the best sauces. Manchu is kind of a hidden gem, hole in the wall, take out place. It's easy to order on their website. They tell you when it'll be ready. Or you can call to order, or order in person. They have a waiting area. And the food never takes too long to come out. Easy to find free street parking in the area. One my favorite thing about Manchu is the staff. They really make you feel like family when you stop by. They're so warm and welcoming.

Yelp
This is my spot! They are also always consistently busy when I do go. The salad is amazing. The chicken wings always hit. This is a neighborhood staple. If you know you know.

Yelp
I was so excited when I realized there was a Manchu in Richmond! I haven't been to Nola in a few years and this was one of my must haves whenever I visited so this was a pleasant surprise. The food is hot and fresh, decent portion sizes, affordable, and the same quality as their family location in New Orleans!
google avatar

Yelp
The cashier was very nice! I ordered the fish platter and it was delicious the was golden color and fresh taste and fries were very seasoned too! ! The salad was small but okay! Fish was a hit ! Thank you !
google avatar

Jaszmyne H.

Yelp
The fried chicken wings were amazing. I got the Cajun fries and that seasoning way some of the best I have ever had. I split the gumbo with my friend and it was very good. Well seasoned.

Barbara B.

Yelp
Such a great spot! The seafood is perfectly fried--light and never greasy. I particularly love the shrimp po boy and the gumbo. The service is always so friendly, and prices are affordable.

Yelp
Manchu is the best chicken spot in Richmond, to me, hands down. The seasoning on the chicken is so perfect, it literally needs nothing, no hot sauce, no NOTHING! Service is always 10/10, the owner usually works the register! HOW MANY OWNERS STILL IN THE ACTUAL FIELD?? We love that! He's loved by his community as well. Manchu is a grab and go with no where to sit and eat on the inside. However you'll quickly realize everyone makes it to their car and begins to eat there in the parking lot because it's THAT DELICIOUS. I've been visiting Manchu for years now, every time I go to Richmond, I stop at Manchu for this exact meal. Go try this out next time you're in the area.

Yelp
Trying to understand the hype about this place because I feel bamboozled. Please tell the people the 6 wing plate is 3 small whole wings cut in half with the tips. Didn't find the spice people mentioned in the wings. And there was nothing fried about my rice. I even hated the fries and it's hard to mess up fries. Where is the New Orleans style in anything that's mentioned in the other reviews. I need to drive around and make sure it's the same restaurant because I did not have the experience I was expecting and most of my plate is in the trash.
google avatar

Yelp
Top notch service!!! Very friendly and uses each customer's name!!! I ordered the crowd pleaser with wings & butterfly shrimp with double fried rice. I got the mambo sauce and sou garlic sauce. This is not a dine in establishment but there are seats to wait for your food. When on this side of town again, this will be my stop!!
google avatar

Thuyen V.

Yelp
This was our first stop in town off the airport, I was craving fried chicken and this shop showed up online. We pulled up to the parking lot and people were eating wings outside the shop! Which meant to me that people could not wait for go home and eat it! First walked in and was greeted by the owner Marvin, he was so nice and all around had good vibes. We got the chicken banh mi sandwiches and wings with the mambo sauce! Once I got to my car, we DEVOUR those wings! Crispy and flavorful, had me licking my fingers after! Good people serving up good food.
google avatar

Yelp
I would visit again just for the beignets!!! Gave me a taste of my other home. Glad I got rice and a salad made a good balance meal without having a bunch of fried foods. Hoping to try the shrimp or shrimp poboy next time!! Kind staff and cute inside.

Yelp
Once again, Manchu does not miss. Shrimp was overflowing, perfectly seasoned and fried and the aioli was fire. Never a bad meal here. Customer service is also always top tier!
google avatar

Makaylah E.

Yelp
We love Manchu, it's affordable and delicious. You get plenty of food to feed the family all for a great price. The service is quick and the workers/owners are always really nice and helpful. We only order carry out and have never had an issue. PLUS the fried chicken is the best I've had in Richmond. u Manchu

Yelp
10/10 Everytime. Nugs, fries and fried rice are the go to with mambo sauce. Cary out style restaurant. The staff taking orders are always friendly and professional even when the phone is ringing off the hook. Online ordering is also available. Parking next to the building is also available.
google avatar

Keesha P.

Yelp
A co-worker mentioned how delicious the chicken wings are at Manchu so when I saw them pop up on DoorDash I had to give them a try. I'm so glad I did. I ordered the crowd pleaser and everything was delicious! The food came piping hot, well seasoned and super fresh! I love their sauces and they have great menu options. I will definitely be ordering from them again!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious food. Had a shrimp poboy. It was fast for pickup and delicious! Very large sandwhich.

Yelp
Man, chu won't believe how happy the wife and I are that they opened a second spot here in Richmond Virginia. The original is in New Orleans Louisiana, Perfectly crispy fried chicken wings, fish and shrimp, coleslaw, crinkle fries with an assortment of dipping sauces all homemade. Gumbo, poboys, and other items on the menu prepared hot, fresh and done right. Manchu Can Do!!!
google avatar

Bryan E.

Yelp
Great vibes from the team, good food and different flavors for this side of town and RVA overall.

Yelp
I love it here. Love the food. So good and hot.! Only thing is it's hard to put in your order because the phone line is always busy so they are really hard to reach.
google avatar

Khamani M.

Yelp
Love the salads, chicken and fries I definitely recommend this place, and the sauce is really good, this place is prefect for cookouts

Yelp
This place was has been on my list to try for some time. I had a taste for fried chicken wings and not anything from a chain restaurant so Manchu came to the rescue! I walked into the takeout restaurant and was greeted promptly. The person taking my order was very nice. I decided to order the 10 chicken wing parts with a side salad and Cajun fries with mambo sauce and ranch. The food was great! Wings super crispy, fries with Cajun seasoning were tasty, and the salad was just the balance I needed. I'm originally from the DMV and can say that the mambo sauce from Manchu was really good! It had a little kick to it, which I appreciated. All in all I felt like the prices were awesome and was worth the amount of food I received. I will definitely be back for the wings and will try some other things on the menu as well.

Yelp
Don't let the location and outside appearance run you away from some of the best Creole food you will get this side of New Orleans. My wife is from New Orleans, I drove over an hour and a half to this location when she told me it's open. As I entered the building my initial thought was, "this cannot be as good as what she says!" I am happy to say I was absolutely wrong! I ordered a shrimp Po boy first ask them about the bread was it truly authentic like what I would get if I were in New Orleans they assured me it a good French bread. I've been asked about mustard -- yeah I eat it on my po boys but remember I married into this creole culture. As I was completing my order with my wife on the phone one of the brothers came out and offered me a chicken wing, he even said this is a tease....OMG it was so good I ordered six of them with my poboy. Additionally, I ordered the gumbo which tasted really good and I ordered the fried rice. This place was truly amazing, great service delicious food, and a great find. I hope it is one that will last for a while in the DMV correction Richmond. A must for anyone who loves seasoned chicken and shrimp.

Yelp
So much excitement surrounding the opening of Manchu in food desert Northside. Solid choice for this kind of takeout fare--wings, fries, banh mi, gumbo, fish, shrimp and po boys. Great prices, nice sized portions, good service. With the opening of this brick and mortar store, they no longer operate the food truck.
google avatar

Yelp
Can I give 10 stars? I've eaten here before so I'm not shocked that I still love this spot. On the menu these were described as chicken nuggets but I will call these little nuggets of love sprinkled with fairy dust! Listen! These nuggets were so juicy and piping hot! And at the hour we arrived we missed some of the sides but the rice was amazing!! 20/10! If you know you know! And the owner and staff are super cool! Get their Mambo sauce way better than most!

Yelp
This is such an awesome and affordable carry out spot. The food is good, the service is quick and the quality does not falter. I have been here three times in the past ten months. Each time, the food is delicious. The sriracha aioli and mambo sauce are our favorites. We get the wings and the popcorn shrimp each time. They are seasoned well and have just the right crispness. The fries and all are cooked to order. There is not an astronomical up charge to get only wings or only flats for your wings order. We get double fries each time. We will continue to order form here. Their online ordering system for their page is very easy to navigate. I also like that they allow you to set up your pick up time for later in the day, if needed. So if you want to quickly pick up dinner for the evening, you can place the order anytime that day and it will be ready by the pick up time. Give them a try. If they disappoint you.... I don't know what to say. I haven't been disappointed yet.

Yelp
We love Manchu, period. Everyone that works there is super friendly, and we have really enjoyed everything we've tried! They are making a pork special currently that is a Vietnamese dish (thịt nướng) that we've only ever had at a place five hours from here... we tried to recreate it in our own kitchen when that place closed and couldn't get as close as Manchu has! If they're still serving it when you visit, try it out! My personal favorite on the regular menu is the chicken bahn mi. My husband is a big fan of the shrimp po-boy. We also recently tried the fried rice and found it to be a very solid choice, as well. Give this local spot some love! The location isn't anything fancy, but the food is top notch.

Yelp
Go try this place you will not regret it . great prices , good customer service and most of all good food and every time i go it's always consistent ! never have issues . the food is always quick and taste sooo good EVERYTIME. i usually get the 6 piece chicken and double cajun fries for my side . I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this place ! go try its soo worth it !

Yelp
I really enjoyed their wings and fried rice. I would definitely go back again. Also, great customer service.

Yelp
This food trick showed up at a community event for sickle cell awareness this afternoon. I ordered the shrimp Po Boy and banana pudding. Now, I don't eat just anyone's banana pudding. They let me sample it before I decided to buy and it was pretty good. Staff was very polite. They even offered to help me back to my chair because I couldn't really carry my water. They said they're waiting on permits to get into a store front location. I can't wait to stop by.

Amy B.

Yelp
Great food! Quick stop on way to OBX and didn't disappoint. The Bahn Mi sandwich was excellent and Cajun fries were really good too. Pretty much a takeout place with just a few chairs-also has parking. I will be craving that sandwich!
google avatar

Kenya M.

Yelp
Some people prefer chains while others prefer Manchu! I'm other's! I'm pretty simple when it comes to fried chicken but there is nothing simple about the flavor of their chicken wings! Sooo delicious! The house made mambo sauce comes on the side and is excellent for dipping! I order more than I can stomach because I'm just that ambitious when it comes to delicious fried chicken wings lol. I originally had them when I visit New Orleans and I was happy to see them here locally. I call my order in and they ask for your estimated time of arrival so they can be ready for pick up. The restaurant is easily accessible with plenty of parking available. The owner is very personable and always has a smile. This is the only place I want to eat wings from currently. I'll eventually try the other menu items like their poboys and braised chicken. I chew Manchu!
google avatar

Casey K.

Yelp
I love this place! It's perfect for a quick lunch to-go. The owner is always really nice and enthusiastic. It's no frills or pretension, just awesome food. I have tried their fish po' boy, popcorn chicken, salad, Cajun fries, and fried rice. Everything is great, fresh, and you get a ton of food for the money. They are really fast too. I've never waited more than 5 minutes. Some people just came in and asked if they still had the truck, but it's just at this location now, so now you don't have to hunt them down. Check them out on Instagram for specials too!

Mo K.

Yelp
We have loved everything we have tried. The fish, chicken, shrimp, and sides were all amazing. The different sauces we tried were good paired with the food as well. The owner is super cool too.

Crystal M.

Yelp
I enjoyed the experience and customer service when I arrived, it was the true Nola hospitality! I ordered the wings and egg fried rice along with the gumbo (add shrimp) and beignets! The wings were flavorful but kind of small in size. The egg fried rice with the sauce was really good. I LOVED the gumbo, it was full of meat, flavor. I can't forget the beignets, pillowy perfection!!

Doubleoo F.

Yelp
They staff cool asab and the food was excellent This is my new favorite spot in RVA for sure
google avatar

Yelp
This hit the spot. My friends and I got back from hiking all morning and decided to scarf down some wings and Marvin's wings are so delicious, small but packed with flavor. I've been at his spot in New Orleans and now here and something just hits different with the Richmond spot. I know the sauces aren't available down at NO but I feel like there's something else, it tasted so good. I hope and pray he comes through and opens shop here in Northern VA!
google avatar

Kavon W.

Yelp
Fire chicken and Cajun fries! People at the front are always polite and food comes out fast. A mix of Asian and Black Cuisine for a price you can't beat.
google avatar

Michael Z.

Yelp
I was very excited to try the combination cuisine offered by Manchu, and it was good. I would have had just the Banh Mi and been done, but we were encouraged to try the Roast Beef Po'Boy. So my daughter and I went halfsies. The po'Boy was good, not sublime, and the Banh Mi was on a soft sub roll. I always had it on the baguette (French Indochinese influence) and this was a lackluster alternative. Good food, decent value. The gumbo was tasty. Worth a try.
google avatar

Han V.

Yelp
I've heard a lot of hype about Manchu and was finally able to try out their brick and mortar location. For their wings, they have set quantities on their menu which include two sides starting at 6 wings. I'm not sure the price of an individual wing but hopefully they offer the ability to order the wings without the sides. They also only serve one style chicken which is the wing from the mid-joint to tip portion (no drumette). The wings were fried well and had a nice craggly coating similar to Popeye's. The flavor of the coating is pretty flavorful by itself. They do not toss their wings in sauce here as they had on the cart but you can pay for sauce on the side. The sides which are included with the wing orders were pretty underwhelming and clearly an afterthought. Their fries are pre-frozen and were not crispy. The fried rice was bland and was just rice with bits of egg. I also tried their shrimp po' boy wasn't too special with the shrimp being the tiny pre frozen kind. They do stuff it with quite a bit of shrimp but I'd rather have better quality. It tasted pretty basic to me and the coating on the shrimp itself got soggy quite quickly. I certainly went out of the way to try their food and though the chicken itself didn't really disappoint, I'd say the overall experience wasn't quite enough to get me out there again anytime soon.
google avatar

Mru B.

Yelp
Got the shrimp po'boy and It definitely satisfied the New Orleans shrimp overload craving I had! It's take-out only so order ahead of time and you can just drop by and pick It up!

Yelp
When I heard that Manchu opened a store front I had to show some love . The food truck would come to my old job and I always remembered how good the fried chicken was . It's a hike from the west end but 100% worth the drive& I live in the west-end . I called ahead since I was on a time crunch . I got 8 wings, fried rice, and salad with mumbo sauce on the side all for $7. I didn't realize the wings weren't tossed in sauce and it's not on the menu . Makes sense since it could make the crispy wings turn soggy . The wings were beautiful and golden with plenty of crunchy & delicious. The mumbo sauce added a sweetness that was great with the fried rice . Next time I'll probably get double rice instead You can find parking on the side of the building & the neighborhood isn't bad . Prices are great and I honestly will get the 6 wings instead since 8 left me stuffed . I love the takeout style and flavors. The wings are crispy without it being overly greasy so you know that oil is fresh .
google avatar

Diondra L.

Yelp
Definitely surpassed my expectations. Everyone says they have the best wings in Richmond so I was pressed to try them. The wings were crispy and good, almost forget to add my sauces. Poured my sticky garlic over my rice which was absolutely a good choice. A good lunch or quick dinner option.
google avatar

Taheera D.

Yelp
Perfect ToGo spot with crispy fried chicken wings and mambo sauce. Great prices and super quick turn around time. I recommend a double order of Cajun fries. Shrimp Po Boy great too! Not a sit down spot but great place for quick delicious fried chicken I still need to try the bahn mi sand which and salad version. Go get you some!
google avatar

Jamal J.

Yelp
One of the best chicken wings in RVA, some of the best employees. Fast and fresh EVERY time. A must stop, especially if you love chicken wings
google avatar

Steven Y.

Yelp
I learned of Manchu from a friend, so I stopped by on a weekend afternoon shortly after they opened. Not a bad line but a steady flow of people came through to pick up or get takeaway. I ordered the bahn mi. It took longer than I expected to get it and I noticed several people get their food quicker. I think it was a one-off kitchen miscommunication. No hard feelings. The person at the register was really friendly and the service was good overall. The sandwich itself was really very good. Great flavors and portions. Think I'd get less of the sauce next time, out of personal preference. The wings seem to be their big item, so I plan to go back to try them. Overall, a good experience!

Jonathan P.

Yelp
Food always taste good and always fresh. I recommend this place all the for good wings.
google avatar

Riley C.

Yelp
I've ordered ahead online and the platform is easy to use. Can't beat the prices for wings and the beignets are an added treat. Great customer service as well!
