A family-run Utah icon since 1977 with a deep menu, seasonal specials, and Peking duck by reservation. Consistently lauded by local media; worth the short drive for a polished, community-rooted experience.

We decided to try this restaurant after hearing a lot of good things about it. It was by no means bad, but it definitely wasn't worth the hype. The food was good, but perhaps a little overpriced. The staff were friendly and the service was great. It was a good experience, but I wouldn't go out of my way or wait hours to eat there again. While the dining experience was pretty positive, I have a big issue with their reservation system. When you make a reservation they require you to give them your credit card number and if you cancel they charge you $15 a person! I have never had to give my credit card to another restaurant just to make a reservation.

I celebrated my birthday tonight with a large group. We were seated promptly. Our food was delicious and was served in a timely manner. The service was fantastic. It was overall a pleasant evening.

Been in UT since 2012 and just now found this hidden gem of a restaurant in 2025. No idea how we never found it until now. Delicious Chinese food with quite impressive service. We’ve now been here multiple times in the last several weeks. Well staffed and very organized. Highly recommend getting reservations on peak nights or you’ll be waiting awhile. Huge gluten free offering as well. Pricey but worth every penny.

The minute I saw the wall honoring the very white owners of this restaurant, I knew we were in for a ride. My partner, who is Chinese American, already experienced racism from one of the restaurant patrons when she assumed he worked there because he held the door open for her. That should’ve been our first sign to get the hell outta there. Here are my main points after eating here: 1. Using Chinese art, language, etc., including making their waiters wear traditional Chinese garb, to create an “authentic” environment makes eating here even worse. My partner felt very uncomfortable with his culture being paraded around as a way to make white people money off shitty food. 2. Cultural appropriation aside, the food quality was worse than Panda Express, for 3x the price. The rice was boiled and strained, the char shu was overcooked and dry, and the portions were small and flavorless. I’ve never had such bland chicken before. You also had to pay extra for the rice and they also had very few accommodations for people with allergies. 3. The waiter, Harlem, was very sweet and attentive to our needs. They don’t deserve any hate. They were the only good part of our experience here.

Hopefully we got an off night. I will start by saying we have been coming to the Mandarin for 10+ years and it’s a family favorite but tonight, wow what a disaster I don’t even know where to begin. I made a reservation for 7:15. Sat around 7:30 our food did not come out until 8:30 it was pretty evident that they forgot about us, fine, it happens so we finally do get our food I go to take a bite only to find a huge hair mixed in between my shrimp and ham fried rice for context my hair is back in a bun so it didn’t come from me I have never in my life sent anything back but I bring it to the attention of our server and I’m basically told to choose which dish they should remake so I say the shrimp but then we take a bite of the ham fried rice and it is straight mush and again we have been here many times so politely we bring it up to our server to which we got well you came in so late you get what’s left 😳 so we tell them they can take it we aren’t eating it and we got a well since you took a bite you will be paying for it and your hair shrimp my bill for my dad and I was over $70 I never got a new plate or utinsils, forgotten and hair in our food with a $70+ bill IT WAS BAD

I'm not sure what inspired a Greek-American family to open a Chinese restaurant in Bountiful, Utah in the late 70s, but this restaurant has become a Utah icon since its founding. Regarded by some as the best Chinese restaurant in the state, your expectations are better set if you think of an amusement parks version of high-end Chinese food - and I mean that in the best way. The egg rolls are reminiscent of a carnival corn dog; large, well-breaded, and perfectly fried. The sauce that comes with it really makes the dish. Not a must-order, but very good. The pot stickers, however, are a must-order. The ham fried rice is average, where it's not bad but there's not a lot of flavor to it. I'd try the chicken fried rice next time. The sweet and sour almond chicken is really good, but it's nothing like a traditional sweet and sour dish. Think a juicy breaded chicken breast covered in a sweet lemony-sauce with almonds. Again, very good, one of their signature dishes, but not a traditional American-Chinese dish. The orange peel beef was my favorite of the entrees, with good flavor, but it's not on my must-order list. I'd agree with others' reviews on the honey walnut shrimp; it's good, but only order for a minimum of 4 people. It wouldn't be good as a standalone entree. The handcrafted ice cream flight of 5 was fun to try, but the Nutella banana and passion fruit were the only two that tickled my fancy. I wouldn't order it again. The cherry lemonade was great. You only get one refill, but it's a great tasting lemonade, which is rare for cherry-flavored items. The service was fantastic, and we really appreciated our server, Amanda. She was prompt and personable, and the service from start to finish was excellent. The atmosphere and story of Mandarin is the true winner. I love Utah and family-owned restaurants, and this has definitely stood the test of time. You can tell many of the patrons have been coming here for 30+ years, and it's a rare trait for restaurants to maintain that level of loyalty. For that alone, it's worth a stop. Overall, I enjoyed my visit, but it's also not a place I'm rushing to come back to. If Google allowed half stars, my true overall score would be a 3.5. It's charming and iconic, but in a class of its own as far as American-Chinese restaurants are concerned.

Google
This was my first time eating here. My wife has talked about this place at least once a week from the time we got married. So for our anniversary we came here. We had Preston as our waiter. Great kid, very knowledge about the food and offered suggestions. I got the General Tso chicken and my wife got Mushu chicken. This was the best Szechuan chicken I've had.... nice huge chunks of chicken. We had the ham fried rice.... that was the best I've ever tasted. Asked if they can make GLUTEN FREE food.... They CAN!! We'll DEFINITELY be back.

Google
My husband and I ordered the eggs rolls, chicken fried rice, and honey walnut shrimp. The egg rolls were by far our favorite part of the meal. Unfortunately, they only do family style entrees (all meat in bulk and order sides in bulk separate), so it’s not an ideal dining experience for just 2 people. The honey walnut shrimp was good but after eating a few pieces it was too sweet. The service was amazing! We were seated immediately for our reservation time, and the staff was great at refilling our water/checking on us in a timely manner. The decor and ambiance was pretty sick too. Overall a good experience.

Yelp
We love to eat at the Mandarin. It is always so very good and tasty. ?Thank you for your prompt service and the delightful experience. ****

Yelp
Exceptional food with great service. So happy to see the old quality continues. Classics with some new flavors.

Yelp
This restaurant used to be pretty good but this last time it was anything but. The only thing we liked this time was a soup they had with rice and zucchini, can't think of the name and Their honey walnut shrimp, which is a family favorite. I had the szechwan lamb and it was super sweet and not spicy at all. The sauce didn't have a good taste either. Service was okay, and they had plenty of parking on a weekday evening.

Yelp
What happened to one of the most premier Chinese Restaurant in the State? This is not the same caliber as when original owner, Greg Skedros, ran the place! We recently went to dine and the Pot Stickers were way overcooked, the mushu pork pancakes seemed stale and were impossible to separate, the rice seemed day old, and three of four entrees were cold to slightly warm. It used to be that you needed to be in line when it opened for the first seating and by 5:30-6p for the second seating. The place was pretty much empty at 6:45p. So sad sorry to report.

Yelp
Service and decorative stunning interiors give the ambiance of this place five stars. Get a reservation or you will likely wait a long while. The amount of people they keep happy and fed at any given moment is astounding. The food: I was REALLY hoping it would be more authentic and flavorful than it was. The variety on the menu was impressive and we tried many different dishes (among those the cashew chicken, imperial noodles, char su wonton soup, honey walnut shrimp, five spice shrimp, fried rice, Mongolian beef, and others I cannot remember.) the honey walnut shrimp was delicious. The cashew chicken was good. The char su wonton soup had a well rounded broth. The rest of the dishes were just fine.

Yelp
The Mandarin Restaurant in Bountiful is a fine Chinese restaurant, clean, well lit and nicely decorated. Tables are placed fairly close together to accommodate the crowds who are seeking dinner when they open at 4:30PM, so be sure to make reservations and be there promptly! The waite staff all seemed polite, attentive and knowledgeable. No mistakes or omissions were made and service all was quick but unrushed. The food was all quite good. Some seasoning was unusual such as curry spice in the dumplings and Asian seasonings in the Mediterranean Lamb. Still, different is not necessarily bad. Everyone at our table selected different dishes including beef, pork, chicken and lamb with various veggies, rice and noodles. All of them were carefully prepared and nicely presented. The Mandarin is a very good Chinese restaurant and we recommend you try them soon!

Yelp
Previously I would have always rated this place a 5/5 and a lot of dishes are. The Honey Walnut Shrimp and the Hot and Sour Soup and General Tso's chicken are top notch. Definitely more American-Chinese style food but its delicious. However some dishes recently have been a bit of a disappointment. We got a couple of dishes with sugar snap peas and all of the peas ended up being so fibrous we couldn't eat any of it, really surprised they didn't test their sugar snap peas before cooking them. The Buddha's delight was full of vegetables but didn't have a unifying flavor to enjoy. Upper scale Chinese restaurant with a fun dine-in experience but just be aware some dishes can be a little hit or miss sometimes.

Yelp
Not what it used to be. Ordered take out at a specific time. Took about 45 minutes later. Staff not as friendly either. Done with this place.

Katie L.

Yelp
This is the worst Chinese food restaurant. Stay away from the nightmare service, cold, greasy food and chaotic atmosphere.

Yelp
We ordered takeout from this restaurant and were extremely disappointed to find that the Kung Pao Chicken was really just Kung Pao Water Chestnuts. After eating the about 5 small pieces of chicken, we took the leftover water chestnuts and put them back in the container so we could show how little chicken we got.

Yelp
I haven't been back to the Mandarin since my original review since the food I got the first time was not amazing. But some friends wanted to go, so I gave it another shot. This time everything we got was 5 stars! Except maybe the hot & sour soup. That gets 4 stars. Not the best I've had. We tried king pao chicken and beef, general tsaos, and a few other things and all of it was great! I'll probably be back! Also, we had a large group and the wait staff was so happy to help us. They didn't know if we'd have one check or many (which I assume is annoying) but they were so friendly. (We did make the billing easy for them, for the record). They were quick to bring out fresh food and quick to move away plates and bowls so we had space to eat. They communicated well and were helpful when deciding what to order.
google avatar

Chris A.

Yelp
The food was good but it was strange that each persons order came out separately. It took about 10-15 min before we had everything we had ordered. Maybe that is by design since it is served family style? Also, we were catching up with family we hadn't seen for awhile and were chatting after we were done with our food and the server came by and said we had to leave because that table was reserved for someone...I have never been asked to leave a restaurant even if I stayed for awhile. If we stay longer chatting we always add extra to the tip. Not a great final impression!
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered the imperial noodles and they were really good. I loved the flavor. My husband ordered the cashew chicken, which was fine. He also ordered the beef chow mein and that had zero flavor. The dumplings were better when I dunked them in soy sauce. We had to ask for soy sauce and then a waiter had to come take it because another table wanted it. I guess they only have one bottle in the whole place? Our table was in a tight corner where we couldn't sit across from eachother but had to sit side by side and look out at other customers so it felt a bit awkward

Yelp
If you love Chinese food, you'll love the Mandarin. We've been going here for years and have always been happy with it. It can fill up really fast though so plan accordingly. When you walk in it's super packed with decorations all over the walls, as well as people. It can be a little overwhelming. You've got to try an order of the egg rolls as a starter. They are fried and come with the most delicious dipping sauce! Our all time favorite dish from here is the green beans and mushrooms in the black bean sauce. To die for! I've never had better and we order it every single time. We also love the five taste shrimp, the honey walnut shrimp, and the Mongolian chicken. This time our server suggested the beef fried rice and told us it had the best flavor so we ordered it. She was totally right! All these years we've been ordering the ham and should have been ordering the beef! It was amazing. We won't make that mistake again. She also told us after our meal that her favorite dish is the Spice grilled chicken, so we'll have to order that next time. The table next to us ordered several of those so it must be good! We've always had great service from here and we like supporting local, family owned businesses.

Yelp
I believe it is the best Asian food in Utah. Yes, it's busy and popular. The wait is a pain, but it's worth it. The only knock is our server was a little surly and not very good. We ordered two appetizers one came out after about 30 minutes and the other didn't come out until after we'd finished eating. When I told the waiter she questioned me, "you didn't get your char shu?" No, that's why I'm telling you I didn't get it. We ordered the Szechuan wings medium and they were very good. My son loved them and even let me try one. 5/5 Char Shu it's very good and I enjoy taking it home and eating it cold out of the fridge with the red and yellow sauces. 5/5 Almond Chicken, basically a traditional sweet and sour chicken dish, but the chicken is so well cooked and the light battering is not over done but nice and crispy. The almonds offer a nice crunch. It's a comfort food throwback that I love. 5/5 They have the best Walnut Shrimp I've ever had. The sauce is so sweet and yummy it's like dessert. No batter on the shrimp, which is where most other places go wrong. My son and I were fighting over them. 10/5 they're that good. Chicken fried rice, I'm picky about my fried rice, not many get it just right, but the Mandarin does. So good. 5/5

Yelp
Disgusting egg rolls if you can call them that. Very greasy, tasteless blobs made wirh some kind of mystery LUNCH MEAT (see photos)

Yelp
Excellent food and service! The ambiance is very relaxing and inviting. Making reservation for less than 14, is very convoluted and non-friendly!! Needs radical improvements. Carl D Warren,(435)757-8805

Yelp
Food is awesome! People love that restraint. There is always a big lineup. Great food. People love their food. People come a long ways to The Mandstin

Yelp
I have to say, I have a complicated relationship with the Mandarin. It's so delicious! Such a treat! The best Chinese food in Bountiful! But the air of exclusivity cultivated by the limited hours and long waits can be exasperating. In spite of all that, this is the local spot to visit when you want to impress your dining companions. I suggest it for business, birthday, graduation, and meet-the-parents dinners. The menu and ambiance are sure to impress! The best thing on the menu is the salmon spring rolls, but they aren't actually on the menu. They're specials that you have to chase down at the right time. The strawberry chicken is super good, too! My mom says it's tender and flavorful in a way other Chinese restaurants can't replicate.
google avatar

Cody B.

Yelp
If you've never had the egg rolls - Don't sleep on them. They are awesome. General Tsao's chicken was good - not great.
google avatar

Chalese P.

Yelp
The Mandarin is my go-to whenever I'm in the area. I think it's a classic and rarely disappoints. We were just there with a couple of friends and got in fairly quickly with our reservation. I would definitely recommend making a reservation as it's typically super busy. The restaurant makes you feel like you are in a truly authentic Chinese restaurant. We love the ambience of the restaurant and the different seating options for small parties or large groups. We ordered Orange Chicken, Cashew Chicken, Mongolian Beef, and the social, Drunken Noodles. The orange chicken wasn't my favorite this time. It felt like there was a lot of breading and not a lot of chicken. The rest of the dishes were really great! Loved the flavor and the portions are great for sharing. I typically order the Tropical Thai chicken and definitely missed that this time! Always order the Tropical Thai chicken and Honey Walnut shrimp. Just do it! Our waitresses were super kind and attentive. They were on top of it - we appreciated the great service.
google avatar

Wendy M.

Yelp
Very disappointing! We were seated in an area which was a mostly glass, it was so cold we needed to wear our jackets the entire time. Food all tasted the same same sauce on our two entrees and it was cold. No vegetables in any of the entrees. Very disappointed and will not be returning or recommending.

Justin B.

Yelp
Horrible experience tonight. We had a reservation for a larger group. We got sat in the middle of the walkway and I was constantly bumped into all night long by the waitstaff and guests. After taking our order they didn't realize they were out of the bbq duck until everyone else in our group got their food. the person who ordered the duck had to pick something else and didn't receive the replacement dish until everyone else was done eating. 0 stars, never going again

Justin B.

Yelp
Ok! Having lived where authentic Chinese food is over the top fabulous you expect "fabulous" from similar restaurants wherever you go! Unfortunately, that is not the case here. In fairness, it's not the worst! But seriously far from the best! We honestly don't know what the hype is about with this restaurant! We've been here twice now hoping both times we would find our replacement to our native out of state favorites. Nope. Bland. Thick gloppy sauces (my friend says is because they use so much cornstarch in them-??) with next to no flavor. Spicy entree's are anything BUT spicy! And I don't mean "hot" I mean Spicy - there really IS a difference! IYKYK!!! Sadly, we've learned our lesson and have closed the door on this restaurant. The only thing the six of us could think of to describe it is simply this...LACKING in every way. I could go on but suffice it to say we'll just leave it for you and your palette to decide! But remember...you were warned! Take it or leave it.

Larry K.

Yelp
The Mongolian beef was great. The snap peas in it were so fresh. The cashew chicken was good. The pork fried rice is great. Probably the best I have had.

Ethan P.

Yelp
Waited 30+ minutes despite having a reservation. The food was abysmal. Almond chicken came cold and tasted solely of vinegar. Mongolian beef had 0.0002 pieces of chewy, fatty beef in it. Egg rolls are battered and deep fried (???) and the crab wontons tasted off. Grocery store frozen Chinese food is leagues better. We were seated close to a vent thag blasted freezing air on us. It was like sitting in a wall-in freezer.
google avatar

Meagan L.

Yelp
I love the Mandarin! In my opinion it has some of the best Chinese food in the area. There are definitely some dishes that are better than others however, so order wisely ;) Some of my favorite dishes include the Cashew Chicken, Broccoli and Beef, Sweet and Sour Pork, and General Tso's Chicken. My least favorite dish that I've tried has been the Imperial noodles. It sounded good but tasted pretty much like oil dumped on noodles...not very appealing. Stick with the classics and you can't go wrong! It's important to know that this place gets VERY busy, especially on weekends! It's pretty crowded inside and although they have rooms with designated seating areas while you wait, it can be super full. I highly recommend making a reservation to make your wait more tolerable!
google avatar

Thomas N.

Yelp
Don't understand the hype to this place. Ordered take out on a Saturday evening, arrived and the place was PACKED and wait for seating appeared very long so luckily did take out. Ordered 4 items: -crab Rangoon (actual crab in it so impressive) -chicken fried rice (not flavorful) -pork and eggplant in garlic sauce (the flavors were off) -shrimp dish (this was probably the best of the 4) Overall, far from authentic Chinese food and flavors were bland. I knew it was a sign it's not authentic when there wasn't even one Asian customer dining in this place. Panda Express might be better.

Ashley V.

Yelp
I ordered take out, promised at 745. we arrived at 745. It was not ready until 815. It was an egg roll, fried rice, and orange chicken. Very disappointing. What was the point of placing a take out order?!

Stacie P.

Yelp
Ambience excellent food amazing. Recommend to all. Great service just really busy which means it was a great restaurant.
google avatar

William F. I.

Yelp
O had the General Tso's chicken and classic fried rice. Both were ok. I felt like the food lacked some seasoning and the breading on the chicken was thin. I wanted a little more crunch and spice. The chocolate lava cake with homemade ice cream for dessert was to do for and amazing. Service was fantastic. I'll give it another go with a different dish, but the lack of seasoning and spice was sorely disappointing.

Spencer C.

Yelp
Fun fact: The Mandarin does wedding luncheons! Great food, great service, great price. The best that Bountiful has to offer for large group functions.

Herbert S.

Yelp
First time here today for dinner. Sara was our waitress. Took our order right away. Two other parties sat down after us and they got their dinner first. We waited 40 minutes and then received our food. It was luke warm. Also, chicken and broccoli dish was not what we ordered. Came with noodles mixed in with the chicken and broccoli. Overall was not satisfied!
google avatar

Dustin D.

Yelp
Excellent food, classy place. The Chinese decor and atmosphere is top notch! As a suggestion make reservations in advance this place is always hopping and busy.
google avatar

Kyle D.

Yelp
This is local's restaurant with a big following. Probably more hype than warranted. I loved the day's special of chicken and vegetables in a black bean sauce. So good! There are so many unique items on and off the menu - not your average Chinese restaurant, but I can't figure out why. We made reservations early and didn't mind the crowds because we didn't have to wait! The place is a little loud, but it's cozy and quaint. Great date location for couples and friends. We'll be back.

Dave N.

Yelp
I have experienced the Mandarin Restaurant many times and found the food and service exceptional.
google avatar

Joey P.

Yelp
Really good food but always so busy I never want to go here. Nice atmosphere inside. Good service. Great hot and sour soup.
google avatar

Mike H.

Yelp
I had really high hopes. Restaurant was bumping, overcrowded, I assumed this place was the best Chinese around. I was wrong. Everything was "ok to average". Soup was acceptable, chicken was barely edible. Noodles were ok.
google avatar

Nathan B.

Yelp
It's hard to find a criticism for this place except that you always have to wait because it's known for being so consistently good for so long. 30 years we've been coming here and it's the best Chinese food in this part of Utah. Everything is good and you can't go wrong with whatever you get.
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
The hype is real, this is good chinese food. And relax, I know its not AUTHENTIC Chinese food, but this is better than that. Definitely recommend a reservation as they are BUSY. We got there at 5, right when they open, and there was already a line. The portions are big, so don't worry about leaving hungry. Everything we had was good. But what we liked the most were the Honey Walnut Shrimp, the crab rangoons and the Orange Peel chicken. You can't go wrong with any of those. The service was EXCELLENT. Our server, Harlem, communicated to us often on the status of our food, and our drinks were never empty. Believe the hype, if you haven't been here before, give it a try, it will become your new go-to Chinese place.
google avatar

Ladawnia D.

Yelp
FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC. I had multiple people recommend this place but it was an hour's drive away so I just never went. We had the opportunity to finally go and we ate every last grain of rice. We got the fried rice, orange peel beef, orange peel chicken and honey walnut shrimp. The shrimp and beef were our absolute favorites. So much flavor and crispy, but not heavy on the batter. The portions are small, that's my only complaint. For the amount you pay, I wish it was more. We only got 4 dishes and paid $75 with tip.
google avatar

Jennifer E.

Yelp
Not worth the weight. Bountiful residents a little to loyal to local chains that are average.
google avatar

Justin G.

Yelp
Bountiful staple.. yes beloved by everyone.. yes. But nothing there is worth the wait in my very unpopular unprofessional opinion. Just ok food.

Yelp
Review update. My wife eats gluten free, and recently I tried the GF Mongolian beef, absolutely incredible. What still holds this a three star was the carry out experience. Ordered my food over the phone and was literally asked for a tip over the phone for carry out, when I declined, no pushback, asked for a tip again when I picked up my food and had to manually sign the credit card receipt. This is literally the first I've ever been asked to tip for a carry out order over the phone. Tipping is absolutely out of hand. Tipping is supposed to be a reward or a gratuity AFTER SERVICE IS RECEIVED. It's a massive turn off to be asked over the phone and then again in person and absolutely influences my frequency of of ordering food from here. I don't like feeling pressured into that situation. I've done over a decade of food and beverage service, and when I sit I tip 20-30. But for carry out and drive through..... no way!!!! Your cashiers and host and hostesses aren't making $2.13/hr
google avatar

Diana S.

Yelp
The parking lot will tell you how loved this restaurant is. Don't worry you can make reservations online or call. The service is great the food is fantastic and they have a Gluten-free menu. I love the ambiance. Everyone we have taken there has a wonderful time. Never a bad experience.

Yelp
Looking for a perfect fancy place to eat out with your family? You came to the right spot! The mandarin is amazing really night quality food, really nice employees, and service! I go here every year for family birthdays and even on new years some times. I definitely feel like this place should be way more popular.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
These guys know what they're doing and they prove it to everyone who eats there. This seems to be the consensus because the line to get in on a Saturday night is crazy long. I first ate here like 15 years ago and loved it but we couldn't remember the name or where it was until some close local friends invited us to stop on our way through town and dine with them. Luckily they had the foresight to make reservations so we got to stroll right past the long line and get to eatin'. Everything we ate was incredible and the flavors were all fresh and on-point. This was just as we remembered it and we agreed that we will try to hit this any time we pass through the city!

Kenny H.

Yelp
Absolutely the best Asian restaurant in the western U.S. Food is always consistent (I've been going there for over 40 years, so I know this from experience!) Very busy, especially on weekends. But it's worth the wait.
google avatar

Joseph H.

Yelp
The food here is amazing! I recommend ordering a few dishes and sharing them family style as you will want to try everything. The service is excellent and on top of things. The environment is very cool as it feels like you are traveling to another country! We have also done take out there and that was a good experience as well. Just call ahead with your order and they will have it ready for pickup. Be sure to make a reservation in advance if you are wanting to have dinner there as the wait times can be long.
