The 12 Best Italian Restaurants In Houston

"Mandola’s Deli in the East End serves enough red sauce everyday to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool, probably. Roll up to Mandola’s for exactly what you would expect: chicken parm sandwiches, hoagies, and spaghetti with meatballs. The old school counter-service neighborhood deli operates in some kind of pre-millenium time loop. The staff seems to know everyone eating here, there’s more University of Houston memorabilia than conceivably exists, and the amount of family photos on display rivals your grandma’s hallway. Make sure to get some cannolis to go." - chelsea thomas, gianni greene

The 10 Best Restaurants to Eat With a Third Tier Friend 2024

"Nothing says, “I care about you as a person,” more than a plate of fried lasagna bites. Mandola’s Deli, an old school Italian restaurant in the East End, not only can provide you with steamy herb-crusted lasagna cubes, but also enough dishes slathered in red sauce to bring down a small horse. The Houston sports team memorabilia and family photos plastering the walls makes everyone feel like they’re a part of something special, even if it is just a reluctant small-talk-filled lunch date. Make sure to grab a few quarts of sauce or a dozen cannolis to-go, mostly because that will give you a solid excuse to skip dessert and leave." - chelsea thomas, gianni greene

The 17 Best Restaurants In Houston's East End

"Old school red sauce joints are few and far between in Houston these days, which is why Mandola’s Deli, an Italian deli and restaurant, feels like a rare gem. Not only can you dig into giant slabs of breaded and fried lasagna or slabs of cheese-crusted chicken parmesan, but you can also get quarts of red sauce, cannoli, and stuffed artichokes to-go. The vibe is less restaurant, and more kitchen attached to a local community center. In other words, everyone working there feels like old family friends, even if it’s your first time in. Mandola’s Deli is primarily open for lunch and is closed on Sunday, so go with your office pals (the ones you really like) or take a couple sandwiches home with you. " - chelsea thomas, gianni greene

Mandola’s Deli - Review - East End - Houston - The Infatuation

"Old school red sauce joints are few and far between in Houston these days, which is why Mandola’s Deli, an Italian deli and restaurant in the East End, feels like a rare gem. Walk up to nearly anyone waiting to order during Mandola’s lunch rush, and they’ll likely reminisce about eating here regularly for the last several  decades. The vibe is less restaurant, and more kitchen attached to a local community center. Everyone working here or eating here feels like old family friends, even if it’s your first time in. The interior wood-paneled walls are covered in family photos and pictures of the old country, as well as more University of Houston merch than you thought existed. Most people dining here are office workers from downtown, blue collar folks from around the Ship Channel, or neighbors filtering in for their usual hoagie or chicken parm plate. Mandola’s remains delightfully analog—if no one pulled out their smartphone, almost nothing denotes the existence of the 21st century. Everything on the menu feels much the same, like a Rosetta Stone for mid-1990s Italian red sauce culture. Most of the food  comes in  some shade of red, brown, or white. Find addictive cubes of breaded and fried lasagna, or slabs of cheese-crusted chicken parmesan, fire-engine red marinara and spaghetti, and a long list of sandwiches that are part po-boy, part hoagie. You can also get quarts of sauce, cannolis, and gigantic stuffed artichokes to-go. Though it’s not quite a relic, Mandola’s Deli does feel a bit suspended in time—nostalgic for long-time diners, and novel for anyone new. Primarily open for lunch and closed on Sundays, so come here  with your office pals (the ones you really like), or grab a couple sandwiches to go. And don’t keep the lasagna bites to yourself. photo credit: Liz Silva photo credit: Liz Silva photo credit: Liz Silva photo credit: Liz Silva photo credit: Liz Silva Food Rundown photo credit: Liz Silva Fried Lasagna Bites Thickly breaded and jammed with loads of Italian dry herb seasoning, these cheesy lasagna bites are impossible to stop eating. These are fried mozzarella on level 9000. We want everyone to eat these. photo credit: Liz Silva Chicken Parmesan Po’Boy Sandwich Classic and casual, nothing fancy at all is happening here. It’s breaded and fried chicken, blanketed in a thick layer of mozzarella, a dredge of bright-red marinara, and squishy white bread. photo credit: Liz Silva Spaghetti And Marinara With Meatballs Red sauce at Mandola’s tastes slightly sweet, bright, and uncomplicated. The pasta, though not fresh, is well cooked, and the meatballs have a solid amount of seasoning. It’s a plate of spaghetti, y’all. photo credit: Liz Silva Cannoli While the cannoli filling tastes a bit too sugary, the thin, soft-yet-crisp outer pastry is delightful. As are the candied pistachios and crispy milk chocolate inside." - Chelsea Thomas

Visited Mandola’s Deli on a Saturday at 1:30pm. It’s an old school family owned and operated spot with vintage charm; wood paneling and memorabilia on the walls. I thought I would’ve beaten the lunch crowd but ended up waiting in line for 40 minutes to order and receive my food. The large Deluxe Po-Boy was tasty and filling and the chocolate chip cookies were soft and delicious! I appreciate that the owner was working front and center at the register, providing great personable service, but he seemed stretched quite thin which slowed the line down. (Only person entering orders in the one register they have, but also attending to multiple things behind the counter.) I will definitely be back but during off peak hours, or phone in my order ahead of time.

Another gem in Houston! Looking for the real Italian deal (and sometimes with a twist)? Mandola’s family tradition for “happiness through food” is a must when in Houston whether you’re a local or just a visitor (like me). From the moment you walk in and get greeted by the owner and staff, to ordering the food, to bringing that first bite to your mouth, it is all goodness!! I went with a couple who are great friends and as much of a foodie and I am. They are local and they had nothing to say but good things about Mandola’s Deli. The stuffed artichoke is the best in class, probably in all Texas! My friend C ordered the Muffuletta and his wife M ordered the eggplant parmigiana Po boy and they said it was fantastic. I had the Giovanni with spaghetti and it was delicious. Both the gent who took our order and the owner, said this plate is one of their best, and boy they are not wrong. Starting with a great flavored Italian sausage, sliced and grilled to perfection topped with four absolutely fantastic meatballs and a homemade sauce, it was a home run of flavors. This is another repeat restaurant for me next time I’m back in Houston. Thank you for keeping this traditional Mandola’s!!

Google
A classic deli for old school sandwiches with an Italian twist. How have I not been here before? It’s absolute perfection!! The meatballs and garlic bread are the best in the City. I can’t wait to try everything on the menu.

Google
What i had was good, meatball sub and potato salad. Potato salad was great , meatball sandwich was nothing you haven't had. For the cost I was expecting something that tasted homemade not freezer aisle Good clean environment. The cookies we picked up were really good. I'm sure if I go back I can find that 5 star entrée. Definitely worth a visit.

Google
Sandwiches are not that good. The Chicken parm 5/5. Spaghetti and meat sauce was also pretty good. Kinda pricey for brunch time. But I enjoyed the parm very much.

Claudia

Google
Went for the Italian sub as a recommendation but left much to be desired. Pizza was ok, if we go back I’d definitely try a pasta dish or meatball sub. Desserts were good and service was also quick and staff was nice. Spacious place and not too loud.

Google
First time and definitely will be back !!! Great portion sizes. Cool sports memorabilia but family atmosphere as well. Glad my coworkers convinced me to try it. THEY ALSO HAVE PARKING. I am not from Houston and haven’t tried many downtown places due to parking difficulty. My sandwiches are DELICIOUS. I have to go back and try the spaghetti 🍝

Yelp
Wow, so good! I met a friend for lunch at Mandola's when I was near the UH Main Campus. The lunch hour during the week is packed with regulars and I loved the casual environment for lunch. Parking is limited, but once you find parking and walk in you can go up to the counter to order and they bring your food to the table once it's ready. My friend and I opted for the muffuletta sandwiches; his regular and my first time trying. It is a simple sandwich, but the flavors are so good. Nothing beats a good sandwich in my opinion. If you're in the area, definitely check it out!

Yelp
I really liked this cute, quaint little restaurant, but my husband was not too impressed. I will admit, the location is less than ideal being situated on a corner with limited street parking, but the parking lot in the back allows you to walk around the front via a side walk. Upon entering, there is a good sized dining room and straight ahead of you is the counter, though it does appear to have been set up backwards. You walk to the opposite end of the building to get into line and work your way back towards the door side of the restaurant to pay after ordering. The menus are hand written and they have a variety of sandwiches; one area of the menu says "if you must" and has a burger as well as a Rueben listed. They have several sides made in house as well as a variety of chip bags available. I enjoyed the chicken salad sandwich, though it had both tomato and pickle on it despite me asking to have both left off. My husband ordered the chicken mandola sandwich, but said it lacked flavor. It seems like it would be a great dinner spot as there are a lot of hearty meal options, but we do not live nearby Houston

Yelp
Great Italian food in a casual space. Eat lunch and then take some home for dinner or later in the week.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious sandwich!! Management is very welcoming and helpful in explaining the menu and I can't wait to go back! Ambiance is very causal and quiet, some TVs on and overall a great spot. They have private parking lot behind the building with security cameras you can see from inside the restaurant too!

Yelp
Great atmosphere and service. The food is always delicious! Lasagna is the best. Go Mandola's! Go Coogs!

Yelp
Let's talk about Mandola's, who are cousins with the Carrabba's. so you know you're in for a treat. It was like walking into my best friend's house & her mother was making her grandmother' spaghetti & meatballs. Back in the 70's. Everyone greets you when you walk in & they make suggestions if you're a newbie. Best of all you can buy freshly made food and go home & throw it into the oven. The lasagna bites are a game changer, they're worth every delicious bite.

Yelp
We were doing some volunteer work in the morning and came by for lunch. The guy at the counter said they're related to Tony Mandola's (cousin). Well heck it's gotta be good then. And ya know what? It was. It was pricey. Not gonna lie. Over $50 for a couple sodas, 1 appetizer (baked lasagna), 1 pasta dish (pasta mandola) and 1 desert (hello dolly). Counter service although they bring it to you. The baked lasagna was something I've not had before. And I loved it! They have their own cola too at the fountain. And guess what? It taste just like coke. lol. The pasta wasn't bad and comes with garlic bread which was nice and buttery. we tried the hello dolly desert having never heard of it before although it is not unique to this establishment after I googled it. Condensed milk, coconut, chocolate chips and walnuts on a graham cracker crust. All my favorites. Yum. My kid didn't care for it though. But I did. They got their own parking lot. Actually two by the look of it. Wasn't an issue on a Saturday for lunch.

Yelp
How have I let you fall off my radar....haven't been here since college days over 10 years ago. That grind made me forget my roots...the reason behind me becoming a foodie in the first place. It doesn't always have to have that eye enticing presentation, some down home family cooking is where it started and this, along with many other gems throughout the city, is what helped mold me. This place is before even yelp for me. So as I walked in today and noticed that the place hasn't changed even first person I seen I remembered from them college days...kinda welcoming to see a familiar face. As I looked over the menu and couldn't decide on what so I chose a few items...the italian green beans I remembered from the past was a hit and again did not disappoint. Also picked the Chicken Mandola and spaghetti...a bit too much food for me alone, but knew a coworker would assist me when I got back to the office. They were all hits, only wished a tad bit more sauce for the spaghetti and maybe some veggies for the sandwich. They told me that via their website you can now set up delivery and catering, which I will be suggesting for some corporate events. Definitely not going to wait 10 years for my next visit.

Jovan M.

Yelp
First time here this place is awesome!! Recommend the deluxe and lasagna bites. Everyone is very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Great subs. This is my go to spot when im at my son's house. The owner is a great guy and the staff has been with him for decades. They have great homemade sausage and meatballs. Lots of University of Houston memorabilia.

Yelp
Good food and service, overall, The mentality of some of the staff could be better.

Yelp
Great food. Great service. Great atmosphere. Very good crust. Beautiful ovens. Natural light into the space is great.

Yelp
The sandwich was good! The place is dated and in the hood! I will definitely go back for a sandwich and take it home!
google avatar

Yelp
Okay!!! So the outside does not do the inside any justice. I loved walking into Mandola's! It's so vibrant and gives all the right College feels. Service was on point! Everyone was so pleasant and cheery! That just made the experience even better! Now my turkey deluxe muffuletta was simply amazing! So tasty! Just the right amount of toasting of the bread! The turkey is sliced at the perfect thickness. Olive salad chopped up perfectly! It was just hand down a great experience. I went two days in a row!

Yelp
EaDo gem alert! On my first drive by in the neighborhood I thought this was closed establishment, only to find amazing reviews on Yelp later in the day. Decided to take a lunch break and head over around 1130, and I'm certainly glad I did. Immediately after I ordered, the lunch crowd came and it filled the restaurant up. You place your order at the deli counter and pay up and find a seat. They'll deliver your food to you. The food was great. I had a deluxe Italian sub and it really had the flavor there. I do wish that I got a 1-2 more slices of meat given the price of the sandwich, especially since I left still a bit hungry even with a regular sandwich and a side of deviled eggs. Maybe I should opt for the giant sandwich next time. Service was great, seems like a family owned shop. Definitely need to come back again and try the pizza and the pasta.

Haley H.

Yelp
This place is awesome but pretty pricy. Best meatball sub I've ever had tho. The staff were really kind and i enjoyed the 70s deli vibe. If they lowered the prices i would be here once a week.

Gus R.

Yelp
The most delicious ever. I love the bean soup and the fried eggplant sandwich. A little pricey but well worth it!

Marilyn S.

Yelp
We went there today for first time. It was wonderful. I wouldn't change a thing. We had chicken parm sandwich, sausage and facahia, deluxe poor boy and eggplant parm. Everything was great. The eggplant was the best I've ever had. It's the meal I order anytime it's on the menu so I've had a lot. So so good. Worth the trip. We live about 30 miles away. treat yourself and go soon.

Lucy L.

Yelp
Great sandwich, great atmosphere. Friendly and full of Houston history. Enjoyed deviled eggs and marinara pasta. Have had good tuna salad there, too.

Yelp
Ive been hooked on the Italian beef sandwich since the 80's. Franks homemade fig cookies are the bomb.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was good. The fried lasagna was different very tasty. The chicken parm was excellent

Yelp
Delicious food, my daughter and i had the roast beef and THE best sweet ice tea we've had in a while

Yelp
I was in town for a quick event at University of Houston and needed a bite before heading home. This was the perfect home grown spot with sporty decor and soulful Italian cuisine. Ordering from the counter makes for a fast and efficient service that I really enjoyed I started with a Caesar salad which was very fresh and tasty. The dressing was a little too generous and made the salad a little more wet then I'd prefer but still great. For my main dish I tried the Giuseppe with the penne Alfredo. The flavor was wonderful and the veggies sautéed well. My only complaint was that the chicken was a tad tough but the creamy cheese/sauce made up for it. At the end of the day, this Italian spot is a great experience with affordable process perfect for anyone in the area.
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
The food had an amazing taste and I enjoyed the side dishes that came with it. But my food had a slight problem, my chicken was overcooked. But the overall quality was spot on. I love Italian food it's probably my all time favorite. I will give 3 stars out of 5 simply because my chicken was overcooked. The staff was amazing and helpful and I bid them all the success in the world. Be safe and happy fooding....
google avatar

Oliver B.

Yelp
Service keeps going down at Mandola's. Anyone who knows me knows I LOVE to support local. Usually this local eatery does it right most of the time. Today was a little different sadly. Luckily, I was drinking a draft beer as I witnessed one of the kitchen staff scoop up ice into the very same cup he had his lips all over. Then he welcomed himself to more fountain drinks. Not healthy post Covid if you will. Did he not learn anything from this pandemic? His germs all being spread all over. Ugh! What a shame too because I most likely won't return to this neighborhood joint all because of one's gross actions in not being hygienic conscious.
google avatar

Kelly P.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this place for years and I finally ordered take out and got the fried lasagna because I had to eat it in the car. It is SOOO good! Crunchy on the outside and soft ooey gooey on the inside. The marinara dipping sauce is so good that I wish I could buy it in bulk. I will be back to try more for sure.
google avatar

Tinaa L.

Yelp
Food and service is amazing. Everyone there is super friendly. They have an indoor and outdoor seating that I wish to try but I take it to go for work. I've tried the cannoli's, they are creamy and delicious!
google avatar

Melanie F.

Yelp
Absolutely! This spot has fed many UH students over the years. They've catered various gatherings from groups of 30+ student advisors & faculty during Freshman Orientation to fabulous sit down meals served to student & community leaders for career development. I am never disappointed enjoying a freshly toasted turkey po'boy with a side of simply perfect deviled eggs or a plate of their rich, hearty Pasta Mandola with tasty parm+panko(?) dusted green beans. Delicious homemade Italian food (with love) is always win for me!

Yelp
After living so close to it for a couple years now, my wife and I tried out this place out for the first time and suffice to say I don't think we'll be coming back For starters, we're not sure how the prices are so high for what you get. A half pizza is a little over 9 dollars but when you open the pizza it's comically small and you're in disbelief for a little. Secondly the quality is far far lacking. I don't want to appear to be a nit picker as I rarely post reviews of below average food, but everything we ordered seemed not authentic. The pizza was reminiscent of something we'd buy at HEB and heating it up in our oven except the quantity is much smaller. The spaghetti and meatballs felt like they just bought pasta and meatballs from a store and called it a day. Last of all, the desserts we ordered were both 2-3 days old (today is 2/23, just in case). Of one of the two, we picked it up at the restaurant while getting our phone order so the expired desserts are just sitting there in front. I certainly didn't want to write a less than stellar review of an beloved mom and pop place; I really wanted to like it, but there wasn't anything about the food that will make me come back. I understand that times are tough due to Covid, but my wife and I don't get to splurge 40+ dollars on take out very often. We wanted to treat ourselves today but we were just left with not very good Italian food. I doubt the owners will reply as I'm looking at the other reviews and they haven't been active on here for two years, I just wanted to get my two cents out there. The food may have have been good in the past but I would stay away from it now UPDATE 2/24: Their response to my review is severely lacking professionalism and I definitely won't be recommending this place to anyone I know. "My mom always told me if you don't have anything nice to say don't say it at all."???? I gave this place an honest detailed review and this is how they respond? It'd be funny if it I knew this didn't come from a middle aged man/woman that has actually talked to people before. Better yet, they actually take the time to criticize how long my review is; did they want a one sentence review like the other ones that I've definitely browsed through on this page or do they think they're infallible and can do no wrong? This is a mindset of a teenager and the rest of the response isn't any better. Also they replied saying that the date on the desserts is the date they were packaged. That's not how that works at all. I don't want a stale cannoli that's been sitting out for 3 days. I paid 5 dollars for a fresh cannoli that was promised on your website. It should say "3 day old cannoli that's been sitting out in front for $4.99" if that's the case. In any case, here's the shortened down version of my review; if I wanted mushy, burned, and a miniscule pizza the size of my hand, I would've gone to little ceasars and paid a quarter of the amount than what I spent at this place. Here's the even more shortened down version of my review: I wouldn't feed your food to my cats. P.s this is a copy and paste of my review and their response to me on Google maps.

Yelp
awesome italian deli that has been around for years. they have standard italian fare and deli items. they even have take home items to cook at home don't miss out on the faccia bread! it's like nothing i've ever had

Mike M.

Yelp
The meatball sub here is the most crave-able sandwich in the city. All of the elements are perfect.--I can't isolate a standout item between the meatball, the sauce, or the bread. It's just all exactly right!

Yelp
So I'm from Jersey. We are pizza and sub snobs because nobody makes them better than we do. I've lived in Houston for 12 years and have yet to find a sub with a good bread. Well I have found it. Best bread yet on their po'boys. That's the good. I tried the Deluxe. I was a little skeptical of pickles on a ham and salami but it was actually really good. Not a typical sub like I'm used to back home but I really did like it. There was some kind of tangy mayo type dressing. It was good. Id come back. The bad? Don't get the pasta salad. Not only was it tasteless, it tasted old and on the verge of going bad. I like the old school feel and the employees that look like they've been there forever. They probably have. And that's always a good sign. One more note: prices are on the high side for a deli. But then again so is everything these days.

Kristel P.

Yelp
I am a native Houstonian and have been coming here for decades. Straight up Italian deli. Family owned. Passed on from father to son. Service personalized just like you would expect from a family business like this. My favorites are the white bean/sausage soup and the deluxe poboy. Hubby always gets spaghetti with meatballs and olive salad. Food fresh and tasty. Atmosphere cozy and lets you know you are with family. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Leah B.

Yelp
Food was delicious and the service is so friendly! Definitely a Houston classic. They are Covid friendly and have spots taped on where you should stand have a barrier to create space between you and them when ordering. Tables are spaced as well if you want to eat at the restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
A little pricey but what isn't t nowadays, overall good. Staff was a little distant and not very welcoming.

Yelp
Randomly found this place as I was heading to an event at Univ of Houston and what a gem! Eggplant parm po'boy was the best I've ever had. Cannoli also really hit the spot and I appreciated them bringing it out to us as we were winding down on our sandwiches.

Yelp
I picked up sandwiches and dessert yesterday. I was reminded why I love this place. Love the staff! Love the food!

Yelp
Mr Frank Mandola himself recommended a sandwich to me, i forget which one, but i remember it was delicious! Great service, good quality, what more can you ask for ? I live not too far so i gotta work my way through some more menu items, definitely recommend!

Yelp
the good: - no-nonsense old school deli - frank mandola kibitzing with the customers at the register - sausage po'boy with a side of meatballs and marinara sauce - CLASSIC! - offered me a bib to go along with my sandwich (see below) - meatball and spaghetti with garlic bread combo - very accomodating selling me some take-home salami slices (not on the menu!) the not so good: - zilch or as my buddy, carmine, would say, "ugatz!"

Yelp
I served as a guest speaker at the University of Houston so I ended up grabbing a late lunch in the area afterward. While Mandola's Deli isn't part of UH's campus, it's close to it and it's definitely influenced by the school. There's a good amount of UH memorabilia adorning the walls. They have a parking lot so that wasn't an issue. As you walk in, they have a long counter at the back which is where you place your order. They bring your food to you when it's ready. Checking out Yelp prior to showing up, I saw that they're known for their fried lasagna appetizer. I had never had anything like it and couldn't pass it up. Even though at $18, it was quite expensive for an app. Especially when you compare the price point to the vast majority of their other dishes which are a lot more affordable. The appetizer was as good as advertised though it was served a little lukewarm. You also get a side of warm marinara sauce as a dipping sauce. They're not open for dinner so I'm happy I got to check them out for lunch.

Yelp
Their deluxe turkey club poboy deserves all the stars! I normally can't finish a poboy or sub, but that just isn't an option at Mandola's. I have no idea what they put in the sauce, or how the pickle juice is perfectly fused into every bite -- but trust me when I say that this simple sandwich will have you craving it every week. And yes, I go in once a week for my fix. (I was even chatting about it with a friend at Voodoo Queen, and the bartender jumped into the convo to chime in).

Yelp
I ordered the turkey deluxe poboy toasted and it was absolutely amazing! The Mandola's Italian spread was delicious! First time visiting, will definitely be back soon!
