The Incredible Costless Abundance of Macaroni Grill’s Free Bread | Bon Appétit

"On a recent late-afternoon visit to the Annapolis branch the exterior looked familiar and service was relaxed; the signature bread arrived first but was smaller and only slightly warm, with a spongy texture and milder flavor than remembered, making it less impressive than homemade versions (though acceptable when dipped in olive oil). The restaurant confirmed that bread is complimentary for in-restaurant diners (a small fee applies for take-home loaves), and the meal continued with drinks, fried cheese appetizers, and attentive service from the server on duty." - BySarah Jampel

We stopped in for lunch with our 2 yr old grandson on Black Friday. The food is great. We sat on the second floor next to the windows with a great view of the water and other shops. The restuarant has great murals.painted throughout. Very charming.

Google
Great food. Their sandwiches, pizza, and calzone all were good. The chicken sandwich was a bit chewy but still delicious. Another thing, there are a few items that are not on their current menu, Calzone is an example. Price range? Acceptable. The servers were nice and polite. The location is very nice and has a great view, but parking could be challenging.

Google
Good place for a taste of Italian. There was a good selection and great pricing, however the service was slow and the food was very basic. There was a single bartender/server at 2 in the afternoon which may have been the reason for the slower service, but the food made me wish I had just gotten a few slices instead. I had the nacho app and the sliders for lunch. The nachos were just basic pizza sauce, mozzarella, and other pizza toppings but on chips, and the sliders were very plain. Food was not bad, and ordering both for less than $25, plus being in and out just over 30 mins wasn't a horrible wait.

Google
You've got to try the Lumpy Green Tomatoes! Scrumptious! Awesome chef and staff provide warm meals and atmosphere is cozy. Situated right in the harbor, a great little eatery for pizza through diner dishes sure to simulate your tastebuds.

Google
Pizza, pasta, Annapolis! What more needs to be said! Renzo, the new owner, is making incredible changes to better serve the locals of Annapolis and the traveling masses that visit this beautiful area! Located right on the water, you couldn't ask for a nicer, cleaner place!

Google
The food is insanely good. The menu has a ton of options and the starters are soo good. Get the bruchetta you can't go wrong. The service is great the waiter I had was awesome. The place itself has a vibe to it I've never experienced it's definately one of those (I didn't even know this was here) kind of places. 100% a hidden gem.

Need food after 10 pm? This is your stop! There isn’t another place you can get food when you’re out late in Annapolis. But that’s okay! The pizza was great, and the staff is friendly ☺️

April B.

Google
The updates and addition of a downstairs bathroom are great! We were also excited to see their choice to use eco-friendly utensils in the downstairs area. Outlets to charge devices by tables is also a nice new touch.

Yelp
My friends and I stopped in a late Thursday night after 10 PM. This was the only restaurant serving food that late. We ordered the buffalo chicken, pepperoni with jalapenos, bacon with spinach cauliflower pizzas. Everything was delicious and fresh. The pricing was reasonable and we loved the pizzas. The restaurant has 2 other floors above and the location was really clean. Theres street parking in the front and during business hours you do have to pay to park. They had a TV in the bottom floor and they serve alcohol. The owner was so kind considering it was late he was able to accommodate us and make some dietary restrictions for us. I'll definitely be back to try their other Italian dishes. The restaurant was really popular late in the evening with folks coming from the bars.

Yelp
I'll come back to try the pasta, but my first taste of the pizza at the newly re-opened Mangia was a disappointment... I used to crave the pizza here. Look at the older pictures of pizza in this listing. It used to be thin crust NY style pizza that you could buy by the slice and it was delicious. You can still buy slices, but it was not good. The crust tasted like pre-made dough. Not sure what it was, but a hand tossed thin NY style it was not. The sauce was uneventful and it was loaded thick with cheese to the edge of the pie. No bubbles of dough crisp on a wide crust. Feed it to your kids. They'll eat it. Don't come if you're craving the taste and smell of the pizza they used to serve. It's not here any more. I do hope it returns. Restaurant is clean and neat with a beautiful dining area upstairs. I look forward to coming back to give it another try.

Yelp
Stop here after work sometime for a few slices of pizza, never got a whole pie since it takes a little longer for it and I don't wanna wait. I got the Buffalo chicken slice but honestly needed something else on it. I also had a cheese and a pepperoni. Pepperoni was scattered with pepperoni but I def like alot more. Cheese was okay. Overall, will prob return to after work but it is def knocked for price being high for "average" pizza. Jake

Yelp
Absolutely one of the best lasagna in town The place inside is way bigger 3 stories restaurant with a full bar and tvs Very pretty inside and great view of the harbor
google avatar

Monique H.

Yelp
Not too shabby for a late night pizza parlor. They definitely ramp up after venues close at 2am. The pizza wasn't horrible it not great like I said good after a night of partying. The crust was too soggy from the sauce and cheese so maybe next time I'll have them warm it longer. It may help
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious!! Very friendly and cute little space! The pizza was so good, best I had since visiting Maryland!
google avatar

Yelp
Went for dinner with family and friends. Tried to order some cocktails, but waitress said she didn't have all the ingredients to make the drinks. No real selection on wines. Just one brand of each type - Chianti, Cabernet, Chablis, etc... Appetizers were plain and basic. Bruschetta was just cold diced tomatoes and onions on bread with a slice of melted cheese on top. Crab dip was swimming in way too much oil. Entrees were like everything else. Basically a meal you could get anywhere at any restaurant. Overall, the place was nice, clean and comfortable. Just a shame the food and service was only average.

Yelp
Rolled in here for lunch on Labor Day. The folks inside were super nice; pizza special was two slices and a canned soda for $9! Good, NY style, thin crispy crust. Glad to see they've gone back to that after reading previous reviews. Service was quick and friendly.

Yelp
My buddy Taylor got tuckered out after drinking beer for College Republicans event in Annapolis The waiter said you can't pass out here it's a family restaurant We left a bad tip and got in the Uber I left my sunglasses and had to run back for them It was embarrassing but the crab dip is good, pizza good and cheesy

Yelp
Mangia is an institution in Annapolis. Great place to grab a good beer and a great slice of pizza anytime day or late-night.
google avatar

Amanda F.

Yelp
We have been coming to Mangia for the last 10+ years, it's an Annapolis staple. But last night we had the most unfortunate experience which spoke to the proprietors' character. Our group arrived around 1:30am (I know, it was late and nothing good happens after midnight!) After ordering 4 pizzas a few of us waited in line for the restroom. After waiting for 15 min and knocking on the door we realized it was locked. The gate was closed to go upstairs to use the restrooms. Mangia LOCKED THE RESTROOMS to encourage customers to leave. This is unacceptable and inappropriate behavior towards people who are patronizing your establishment. After asking we were denied the restroom and asked to leave! So I won't be back. Ever.

Yelp
Italian sports cafe is something interesting. Like a sports cafe but with Italian dishes. Alright first things first, we ordered pizza. A lot of cheese and topping in general was generous. Pizza was crispy, fresh, hot and delicious. Chicken mozzarella was great. Overall great place to hang on with some friends.

Derek T.

Yelp
Food was good but it took them forever to serve us. Once we received the food, the waiter pressured us to leave and clean our table because his shift was over. I wouldn't say that the place is bad, but the vibe wasn't great

Dean T.

Yelp
Great service, food was pretty good, and not crazy expensive. Great family atmosphere, and the late night pizza is great for Annapolis. Will be coming back!

Yelp
Fantastic food at the bottom of Main Street! A hidden gem. Stopped for lunch of linguine and white clam sauce and it was divine. It was an impulse stop for lunch and I was delighted. The little lunch shop (below the pub?) was bright, airy and clean. But the food made the trip spectacular. I haven't had good food like that in a long time. I don't get to Annapolis often, but lunch is not on the agenda!
google avatar

Mark J.

Yelp
I used to only know this place for the slices at 2 am after closing down Pussers...Since then, I have now discovered that this establishment also moonlights as a traditional Italian restaurant...Who knew? It's hard to find many items that don't please. That being said, In Vino Veritas....the 'Zaa still reigns supreme in my heart.

Derek D.

Yelp
I've been waiting for my pizza since 2011. They keep skipping me to deliver individual slices even though I ordered 11 years before these people. Will update with pizza score
google avatar

Vince N.

Yelp
Very good homemade cauliflower crust pizza. Lots of cheese! Friendly staff. We've been going to Annapolis for decades. Not sure how we missed this place before.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food and service. The lasagna, chicken parmigiana, and pizza are amazing!! The inside is intimate and great place to bring your spouse for dinner. The upstairs bar is a great place to grab a cocktail or beer.
google avatar

Jyotsna W.

Yelp
If you order pasta, you have to ask for bread... And by the time the bread gets to you, your pasta will be cold. When I asked for bread, the waitress said, "oh you want bread? what kind of bread?"... As if bread was not something they serve with their pastas normally without request. I asked another waiter at the same restaurant if they serve bread with pasta normally without request, and they said yes. I ordered the worst chicken marsala ever here.
google avatar

Greg S.

Yelp
If you are craving pizza while in downtown Annapolis, come here (as there are not many other choices for pizza in the main st area. There phone number does not work so just order at the counter. One small slice is $4 while an entire large of 8 slices is $17.75 with tax. It's a no brainer. Pizza is good not great but if you are craving pizza on main st, this place does the job.

Kim K.

Yelp
Pizza was excellent. Crust was well made, toppings were delicious. Service was friendly and attentive. Very reasonable prices.
google avatar

Patty W.

Yelp
Nice friendly service. Went midday and food was prompt, had meat lovers pie and Caesar salad, both were delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
From first glance this place seems to fit right into the Annapolis town charm. But the bottom line for me was an overdone sandwich with no customer service. Have a look at the pics at what I define as overdone and dry. I Ate a few bites then I commented "this is very overdone." The response: waiter took the plate and dumped the food in the trash can nearby and then he said...sorry you didn't like it and gave me the full bill/check. For me it was an $18 lesson learned.
google avatar

Yelp
Situated right along the harbor in the busy atmosphere, we thought to get pizza, why not? Every other place was packed and busy. This place was EMPTY. We got a peroni and waited for our pie.. It was thick and greasy, sauce was orange like Elios, cheese falling right off. Expected better for the area. Won't be back
google avatar

Malia M.

Yelp
I've been here before but only to grab just one slice of pizza to go. Today I ate in. I ordered the lasagna and was very disappointed when it showed up. It was $18, very small, very watery, and less than an inch thick. There was like one layer of noodle and the rest was slices of cheese on top. We also ordered a Hawaiian pizza which came out as a pizza with meat sauce and pineapples. It was also $18 and very not worth it. However, I give them three stars for staying open late and having good music.

Nat ..

Yelp
Don't think its a sports bar anymore... but idk (place is kinda confusing). Believe it closed due to covid awhile ago (unsure why but it was closed for awhile), but now they're open late and serve pizza by the slice! All we can ask for in Annapolis-the locals have been missing out and it simply deserves a good review for being around ... and if ur not overly-picky and weird at 1am on a friday night then its the perfect place for u (i swear some people in these reviews are expecting a michelin star meal past 11pm on a street filled w bars... its not that, nor does it need to be). @ others, stop being weird and picky lol

Yelp
3.5 Stars Mangia was my go to place for some quick slices before a night on the town when I lived in Annapolis. I was probably here almost once a week. Sometimes I'd get dinner to go but usually I ate in the little dining area in the front. I never actually ate in the sit-down restaurant upstairs. The slices were decently tasty and reasonably priced. Enough to bring me back time and time again. I think Mangia stayed open for the post - bar crowd but this was always my pre - bar stop so I'm not sure how rowdy it gets late night. Convenient location on Main Street, right near the water.

Yelp
What a disappointment! I had purchased a Groupon with a $30 value, and convinced a friend to come with me to give them a try. We got there early, as we had come straight from work, so it was only around 5:30, only one other table upstairs was occupied (they filled up over the next hour or so), so we were able to pick pretty much wherever wanted to sit. Our server was very nice, so he's really the only thing that kept them from getting one star. To start out, they really need to pay attention to the cleanliness of this place, especially the nasty worn out carpet covering their stairs. I halfway expected moths to come flying out when I stepped on it. And throughout our entire meal, we were plagued by flies and gnats. Really, not pleasant. As for the food & drinks, I've definitely had better. We ordered an appetizer of arancini, which was OK but definitely not great. You get 3 for around $12, which is a bit pricey (as is everything on their menu...that seems to be a theme with them, overpriced.) I opted for lasagna for my entree & my friend got chicken marsala. We were offered no bread, and when we asked if there was bread we got a look as if we'd asked for something totally crazy that they'd never heard of. But they did finally bring some out. My lasagna was "soupy", best way to describe it, and the cheese was barely melted, none of that nice browned cheese you'd hope for with a good lasagna. My friend's chicken marsala was bland, no flavor at all to the marsala. At least the chicken wasn't dry, but she took half of it home & said she was going to make her own sauce for it. This place might be good for a slice of pizza if you're out walking and/or drinking, but I wouldn't go for anything more.

Yelp
I don't know if Shrimp and crab belongs in a Calzone..... So it might have been a poor choice on my part, but I wasn't impressed with it. It sounds really good, but I didn't think Crab and Shrimp with ricotta is a good choice for the Annapolitian Calzone. I thought the crust was very good and the cheese was fresh, but the sea food...nah. I can see how this would be a good place for drunken snacks after a crawl down Main Street.
google avatar

Yelp
Yeah Pizza! This is a great little walk in and get a slice kinda place. We were walking back to the car last night on our way home, it was past midnight I must say. And who's open? Mangia! Did you know Mangia means eat in Italian? Yup! So we did, we all got a slice and around the group all I could see was happy faces. The pizza was not too doughy or anything, they had the parmesean, garlic, red pepper flakes sitting there as you needed them and the folks that we were working there were a pleasure. I have not had the opportunity to sit and eat but I was very glad they were open last night, we all were and then to actually have enjoyed the pizza.. yum!
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
Staff was professional, there is no bathroom latenight. Pizza was great!! Can't wait to get a well done pie again. I tried to argue with the pie cook bit he was right, great pie.
google avatar

Danny C.

Yelp
Mangias has OK pizza and bad service. If you want great pizza go to Bella Italia, however Mangias stays open with the bars. Bella does not. Come into this place expecting a few things 1) Good but not great pizza 2) "Open all night does not equal better quality 3)don't ask about bathrooms... Some HARDO will take offense that you didn't know they were close
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
After ordering 2 large pizzas, I asked, "hey, Sir, can my friend use the women's restroom?" And the manager responded promptly with, "Is she sober enough to wipe herself?" Enough said. And the pizza is less than average.

Allison H.

Yelp
so i need some pizza. but i also have to pee. so i decided to pee first before i indulge in some pizza. as i walk into the bathroom i hear someone say something but i couldn't hear. and i wasn't about to walk out and ask them to repeat. so i lock the door and start to pee. someone starts to jiggle the handle. then the lock starts to turn. then the door swings open and it's the man behind the counter. i yell "what the hell" and he screams "customers only u fucking heard me" i freak out and pull back up my skirt. and he comes in and tells me to get out. now i have never felt so violated in my life. there was a crowd of people out eating who saw and heard everything. never gave me a chance to say anything or even buy anything. this was a genuinely awful and upsetting experience and i left hungry and still having to pee. and traumatized. but like seriously tho wtf that man is so weird and perverted. like that had to be illegal

Yelp
Drove to Annapolis fot the day with no specific plans. Decided to get a bite to eat and landed here. What a gem of a spot. Nice staff and owner. So happy we ended up here. The food was fresh and delicious. Highly recommend the Maryland crab soup, mussels and antipasta.

Madison C.

Yelp
Terrible experience due to an awful staff. Extremely rude and offensive. Despite signage regarding restroom usage, would not allow paying customers to use restroom. Would not recommend for anyone visiting Annapolis.
google avatar

Christine R.

Yelp
Late night pizza could be good but staff are rude and do not prepare food to temp. Upstairs is fucking awesome.

Yelp
Away for 5 years, we really looked forward to dinner at Mangia's in Annapolis. Unfortunately, we were sorely disappointed. Our server was friendly but after greeting us, she complained to us that they were short staffed but the manager "kept letting people in." Hmmm, I thought, we're "people." After the initial greeting, the service was very slow and after placing our order, we waited for almost 40 minutes to be served My wife ordered crab cakes. "Sorry, we're out of crab cakes, the truck didn't show up." I thought, so much for homemade crab cakes. My wife then ordered Shrimp with fettuccini and a "spicy fradiavolo sauce." The fettuccini was over cooked, the shrimp okay but no "devil" whatsoever in the "spicy fradiavolo sauce." I ordered the sautéed mussels for a starter and linguine with calms for main course. "Sorry, they ran out of the regular clams and are using some other kind of clams." I thought I should pass on that so I ordered a calzone. The calzone came but no mussels. I asked where my mussels were. She said I cancelled them. No, I cancelled the "other kind of clams." In fairness they gave me an order of mussels on the house but they were the smallest mussels I've ever eaten and the white wine sauce was almost tasteless. The calzone was very good. Maybe it was just a bad day but it was a bad dining experience for us We wouldn't go back and would not recommend Mangia's for anything but a calzone or pizza. At least for yesterday, whatever they once had is gone!

Yelp
I never take the time to write reviews. I bet you're wondering what would possibly get me the write one now. Prepare yourself! Mangia used to be one of my favorite places to eat in downtown Annapolis. According to current staff, a "foreign group" purchased the place last year. I haven't eaten there in about a year; how sad to see what has become of this place. Read others reviews... it's filthy and flat worn out. We ordered the calamari. It was the worst we have ever had. Absolutely zero flavor. The kids ordered a white pizza which had so much garlic on it nobody finished their slices. The calzones were without taste. My wife ordered a large salad that was supposed to include artichoke hearts. Problem is, zero artichoke hearts! I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs. Worst meatballs ever! It would've tasted better if they rolled up newspaper into ball shapes and smothered them with sauce. Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! I voiced my concerns to the "manager." He was a tattooed fellow running the upstairs bar. All he had to say for the food was that he didn't understand because these were the same cooks who were employed before the change in management. He offered nothing except a blank stare. When I asked to speak to the owners, I was told they weren't in. Convenient! The server checked on us maybe once (which is when I asked for more water and then didn't get any for about 30 minutes). We ordered fries to compensate for the horrible pizza. The fries never showed up either. If you decide to go to Mangia, you should just ball up your money and throw it into the water. It will honestly provide more enjoyment! The only reason this place gets one star is because I can't give it zero! We will never, ever return to this restaurant (even if that pathetic excuse for a manager offered us free meals for a month). I expect it to be out of business sooner rather than later.

Yelp
Great service and fantastic pizza pie. A great choice for Italian food in central Annapolis.

Yelp
Honestly, the food was superb. The waitstaff was even better. Everyone was very friendly. Lindsay and Lisha were both very welcoming and just made the experience even better. I'll definitely be coming back here! Would recommend the seafood marinara for sure!!!!

Jessica B.

Yelp
So, this was a really odd experience overall. My friend and I decided to try Mangia's, since I had a groupon. Most of the other reviews were correct. We walked in and the waitress very abruptly asked how many people and we said 2. She said the upstairs was packed and we could sit outside or on the barstools downstairs. We said we would wait for upstairs and she was adamant on us not waiting. We said we'd eat outside and she said we could order with her inside first. We each ordered - now let me say this place is way overpriced for what they give. I mean, this was a really mediocre menu. We split a calamari (came out cold and chewy) and I ordered the chicken Franco (it was really good but the waitress couldn't find it on the menu and kept asking what was in it) and my roommate ordered ravioli Florentine (the sauce was amazing but the spinach in it was all clumped together and when it was broken apart, it was kind of just chopped spinach that wasn't incorporated). As most people stated, you had to ask for bread and when I asked for butter, the waitress said there wasn't any in the restaurant but brought us olive oil, which was nice - but really? No butter? After we were done, I went in to ask her for a container to go and the check. She didn't come out once to refill drinks or check up. She gave me a pizza box for my pasta (uhhhh) and said that she didn't know how to apply a Groupon and her manager wasn't there to do it so I'd have to wait awhile for someone to help me. I went back outside to My friend and I waited about 15 mins and then went back in and she said "it'll just be another minute". Her coworker did help us then and took my phone for about 5-10 mins to apply the groupon. The whole situation and human interaction part of this meal was strange. The food was good, which is where the 2 stars come in. I can't give more than that because I don't think this place is worth going to based on that
google avatar

Yelp
Went here on 4/03/2018 at around 8pm. There were 2 other tables of customers. One had their food and one had appetizers and was awaiting their order. Our waiter was very unsure of what to do, when he came and took our order, he was watching two females walk downstairs and wasn't even paying attention. He turned around and said "What?" So we had to repeat our entire order. He wasn't even paying attention as we were talking to him, seemed very unsure about everything we were asking him. To top it off we didn't get our appetizer because he forgot to order it. Then to top it all off...the food absolutely SUCKED, the worst ever. He apologized about 10x, but didn't even comp any part of the terrible meal. Save your money and go somewhere else. You can get better service and food from a vending machine. We will never return.
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
Calzone excellent. Could not effectively eat with flimsy plastic utensils that Melted and bent. You would hope they could figure this out.
google avatar

Tim F.

Yelp
Wow some Yelpers can be so cruel or brave behind their keyboards. I didn't order the pizza so maybe it really is the "worst pizza ever" but highly doubt that because based on the crab cakes I had, I'll assume that this Italian restaurant can make an acceptable pizza. The food was on the pricey end for the quality but what do you expect for the high rent location they're in. I stopped in for a quick lunch and everything was to my liking. So don't let the other angry Yelpers steer you clear. Also I was there for lunch but I'm assuming this place is a kick ass bar at night. It appeared to be a bar first and restaurant second.
google avatar

Rochelle L.

Yelp
This place is meh at best. Our server seemed to be in a rush and got our check before we finished our meal. Not 1 smile at all, very bland personality. Our food was overly saucy. We waited a good 15 minutes for the bread with oil that we requested.
google avatar

Jen R.

Yelp
Ooh, a pizza whore's delight! The first time I ate here Mangia hit a home run. Our waiter was good eye candy, super friendly, and def willing to overlook the fact that a few in our party were, umm...falling on the floor drunk. He didn't give us any attitude when two of us decided to split a pizza, another kept to her liquid diet of wine, and one bitch (how she got invited I'll never know) decided she was ok w/ water. We received our drinks and pizza quickly, and the pizza was def doable for this Chicago girl. Our waiter even stopped by to thank us for our guilt-induced mega tip. Hey, we had to make up for water bitch somehow. The other times I've been here the service was noticeably worse. Waiting an hour for a simple medium cheese pizza seemed to be the norm, while tables seated way after us were getting their pizza eat on w/in half an hour. Sadness. The lame ass excuses from the waiters didn't help either - I'm not stupid, I can tell my order is getting bumped for the local's. Anyways, I'd come here again, with the expectation I better bring good company cuz I'll have to wait at least an hour for my food, since Mangia seems hellbent on trying to pizza-block me.

Yelp
A duplicate listing deserves a duplicate, accurate review. This pizza is possibly the worst and weakly topped I've had in my entire life. Made a big mistake and did not Yelp this place before ordering - Mangia was a suggestion from the night manager at the Marriott where we are staying down the street. (bad suggestion!) Little did Mangia know that they were making 4 large pizzas for Kevin Costner and his entourage. The toppings were a joke, barely any pizza sauce, and each slice required two hands to prevent 90% of the cheese from falling off. No crispiness to the crust at all. Yelp rules, all day long. There are actually 5-star reviews on Google Places for this crappy pizza joint. Google Places you should be ashamed, very ashamed.
