Best Southeast Asian Food in Austin - Eater Austin

"The co-owner and chef of the cozy Georgetown restaurant is originally from Cambodia and uses family recipes for the menu. There are Cambodian dishes like the rice plate (seasoned pork chop atop rice with pickles and vegetables), stir-fried water spinach, and rice vermicelli. The rest of the dishes include Vietnamese and Chinese offerings. Takeout orders can be placed online; there are indoor dine-in services." - Clara Wang

This family run restaurant is cute and good. Tried their Cambodian pasta. It is great. Also ordered the Vietnamese iced coffee. The coffee is not to my liking. But it is not bad. The owner offered two chilly sauces as I wanted mine spicier. Will come back for sure to try other items on the menu.

We had birds nest with veggies and tofu, Vermicelli Bun and KHM ER rice plate with pork. I am vegan they did a very good job accommodating plus they have unlimited soups that you can go and self-serve that are wonderful! There was egg drop & veggie vegetable. We sat outside because we had our two pups with us. Pleasant experience! Co-owner, Panha, is Cambodian, so pleasant and truly cares about how the customer experiences the food we will be back again

Google
An awesome Asian fusion (Vietnamese, Chinese, Cambodian) restaurant with a wonderful selection of food and nice service. They offer a great variety of food and drinks, a nice bar seating area, and even free soup while you wait. Everything came out nice and timely and it was definitely worth the price. Definitely going to come back when in Georgetown again.

Stopped in Georgetown, and this cute spot downtown was perfect! They have a full bar and outdoor seating on the side too. The sweet server recommended the spicy green beans, and they were delicious! Perfect spice level, came with protein of my choice, and rice. The fresh spring rolls were yummy too. I will say they can go a bit heavier on the sauce portion for both those items. But all in all delicious and good portions! If I ate it all, I would have been too full (the photo is half of what I had eaten) lol

Google
This place is slammin’. They have great beers on tap and absolutely delicious food to match. It’s a perfect lunch or simple dinner place. Definitely a big Vietnamese influence to the food, and the simple staples like the rice and pork are done absolutely perfectly. I am actually craving it like crazy as I write right now. Great local joint at a good price in a fun area. Would definitely suggest stopping in.

Went to this quiet cute little place in Georgetown for our anniversary and it surprised us with good food and drinks! Service was pretty good . We ordered the Valentine’s martini - limited drink for V day and a couple of food dishes - pasta Cambodia was cooked to perfection and they can customize any dish to have tofu which was great ! We did medium spicy and it was a bit on the spicier side for us so I would recommend going one level down on the spice level to be on the safe side . They will give you chilli oil if you need it to up your spice level on the side . The lettuce wraps - omg!! Was truly amazing and refreshing ! The vermicelli noodles were soft and pillowy, the chicken was cooked well and the pickled veggies added a nice depth to the flavors ! Overall, had a great experience and will be back !

The steak luc lac was delicious. It even had the red fried rice which is the traditional French way to serve this dish. The Khmer noodle dish was not the best. The flavors were good but the sauce was so watery. I actually took this home and did a corn starch slurry with it. It made the dish a lot better. The green beans and chicken were forgettable. I liked it but nothing really special about it. We did get free egg drop soup which was the best I’ve ever had. It had a peppery taste which provides more complexity. I really liked it. The service was great and the women all looked like sisters. They were all very attentive.

In town to see our nephew perform at the Palace Playhouse and grabbed a quick bite. I'm not sure what was going on. Somebody was trying to sing the blues to a group of octogenarians using a backing tape. The bartender and a server were arguing about who was going to quit first. The food was hot and fresh and to be honest not bad. The pho broth was just very...done? Like it had been simmering for too long. I'm not sure what they were trying to accomplish, the decor and menu makes it seem like a Vietnamese bistro. The execution makes you feel like a westerner in 1975 Saigon. A thin veil of American culture poorly executed on top of quasi French cuisine served by people no longer interested in pretending that things are gonna get better. My fun meter was pegged.

Yelp
The food was excellent! So freshly prepared! We were honored to meet the chef and really felt valued as guests. I have to say that the ambiance is what I'd call "functional" but the chef and server took it to another level! Yum!

Yelp
I visited this location the day after Thanksgiving with my partner. We ordered a few menu items to get a good sampling of what this location has to offer. We started by ordering bobba tea and soda (neither of which they had, yet it was still on the menu). So we elected to get mixed cocktails as there is a full bar at this location. I asked for a Hendricks and tonic. While there was tonic, there was no Hendricks. At this point, I felt like there was a pattern starting to emerge that I wouldn't be fond of. Fried Prawns When the prawns were presented, they were battered and not fried. These are two distinct methods of preparation, "battered" means a food item has been coated in a batter (a mixture of flour, liquid, and other ingredients) before frying, while "fried" simply means cooked in hot oil. Needless to say, I wasn't too keen on the panco-style prawn. In addition, the prawn were absent of flavor. Pasta Cambodia I was excited to try this dish as it seemed like an interesting mix of ingredients. I ordered this dish with two types of meats as opposed to one (chicken and beef). The beef for this dish was tough but the rest of the dish seemed to be cooked properly and the flavor profile was balanced. Crab fried rice The rice on this dish was hard. Hard rice is usually caused by not adding enough water when cooking, which prevents the rice grains from absorbing enough moisture to soften properly; essentially, the rice is undercooked due to insufficient liquid. So, it seems that while the beef on the pasta Cambodia was overcooked, the rice in the crab fried was undercooked. I do understand that every spot may have their off days and perhaps this was a day that I caught them on such a day. Swing and a few misses here.

Yelp
Read about this restaurant & saw the menu on their website. Went here today for lunch. We were seated and menus labeled 'Dinner' were on our table. I asked for Lunch menus as we were here for lunch, Our server told us it's the same menu. I told her it's not as I was the lunch menu online. Asked again did the lunch menu. Our server came back with another staff member who told us this is the only menu they have now. My friend and I decided to go elsewhere. Update your website please or at least take ownership. I'm a customer you lost.

Yelp
Taste and smell like old grease and also soggy shell. Sauce is so watered down, barely had any flavor to it. $15... so not worth it....looks nothing like what they show on their website... very disappointing, only picked one star so I can leave this review... I can still taste the grease in the back of my throat as I am writing this review... this is typically eaten as a lettuce wrap but my lettuce came shredded and the cucumbers... smh... where's my herbs and chili peppers or the fresh bean sprouts?!

Yelp
Happened to venture here for lunch one day and was VERY pleasantly surprised! The staff were so sweet and the food was so delicious and flavorful! Definitely recommend.

Yelp
The bacon fried rice is delicious. Their pho broth is also extremely flavorful. Mango Tango has become a favorite of ours here in GT. The service is great as well. Plus, they are on doordash. Super convenient on lazy days.

Yelp
Mango Tango is another local restaurant that was on my list of places to try. Let's start by saying, I'll definitely go back! The ONLY reason for the 4 starts and not 5 is simply the interior. It's a relatively small space, but that's not the problem. The furniture is a bit worn and uncomfortable, and the restaurant just did not look or feel very clean. I also arrived right after their lunch rush, so maybe they just didn't have time to tidy up. I was greeted as soon as I walked in. Our server was really nice and friendly. She always smiled when she spoke to us. And she made excellent recommendations off the menu. I don't even remember what I ordered, but my friend and I each ordered a different dish so we could share them. The food was spot on! Very delicious! It was one of those situations where I wanted to lick the plate when I was done. Lol. Very fresh and very authentic.

Yelp
Your Yelper Girl here! My sister and I wandered the Georgetown Square, went off the beaten path, and found this restaurant gem. We perused the menu in the window and it looked promising. It wasn't yet opened so we continued on our journey. After shopping and lunchtime rolled around, a shop owner confirmed that Mango Tango was awesome after we told her we were considering heading there. We were greeted and told to sit where we wanted. After being seated, we were brought some complimentary egg drop soup that was delicious! We ordered the Khmer Iced Tea after seeing a pic of it online and it was so yummy! We were asked if we wanted it with boba and we said yes. I would definitely order this tea again; however, without the boba as it was kind of hard and I like my boba soft and chewy. We wanted a light lunch so we split a half order (5) of the small egg rolls and wow were they the bomb! They were HOT (temp wise) and so crunchy. The sauce served with it was good; however, I could have eaten them without the sauce as they were THAT good! We also ordered lettuce wraps and there was the choice of beef, chicken, or pork. We ordered the pork and that was delicious too. I love that it was served with romaine lettuce as most places serve iceburg lettuce. There was a delicious selection of raw veggies in a yummy vinaigrette sauce. I would have liked more of the meat in the entree; however, it was very satisfying for two people sharing. The restaurant was cute and quiet when we went in and the staff was so friendly and attentive. My sis and I definitely want to go back and try some of the dinner entrees and fried rice selections. Mango Tango is so yummy for the tummy!

Yelp
My husband and I ordered take out tonight from mango tango. Amazing ! I ordered the crispy tofu, and crab puffs... both very good. The spring rolls with the peanut sauce were perfect. The fried rice which was absolutely amazing. My husband ordered the round eye pho as well... he told me' "I could order this anytime." We both loved our dinner delivery !

Yelp
The combination fried rice was excellent here. yelp will not let me post the words I wanted to say about the food so I'll leave it at that. It's the best combo fried rice I've ever had.

Yelp
Food was great, and service as well. Restaurant had a very friendly atmosphere. It was in and out for us, but all orders were grest, kids loved it too

Yelp
I thought the food here was just okay, nothing I had was great. My friends got the Pho and loved it but I personally was not a fan.

Yelp
I can't believe we haven't stopped in sooner! All of the food was top notch. The flavor in every bite is incredible! The restaurant was nice and clean. Good spacing between tables. The staff were all friendly. We met the owners. They were very nice and you can tell they love sharing Cambodian cooking with others. Our favorite dish was the pasta Cambodia. Highly recommend you try it when you stop in!

Yelp
I had not heard of this place, but it has been open since March of 2020. I met some clients here for lunch and it did not disappoint. The staff was fantastic and the food was great.

Yelp
I got to pick a restaurant in Georgetown and Asian food is always my top choice. I saw the picture review here and was drawn to check this place out. When I saw that they have Ban Xao in the menu I decided to pack everyone and head that way. We ordered quite a lot of food but double. Started with appetizers: -Crab cream cheese rangoon -Wonton spring rolls. Both of these appetizers were good, the wonton spring rolls one was a little off to the 3/4 to us. Of course you cant go wrong with crab Rangoon. For the main we got: -Crab fried rice (the sauce is so good we ended ip putting it on our steak and garlic noodle too. -Steak and garlic noodle was good but to the side of a little bland it kind of need a little body to it. It came out with a lot of sauce and the steak kind of came out medium rare. If you like it well done you will have to specify to the server. Ban xao wrap was 3/4 out of 5 to me. I was here for this but it came out last, maybe i was almost full and my appetite was kind of gone. I will give it a try next time and will request them to make the pancake to the crispy side. The only problem we had was that the food did not come out at once for everyone. Which I think they still trying on it. Service was definitely great!!! We will be back again and try other things on the menu.

Fred B.

Yelp
A real hidden treasure! An unassuming bar with an incredibly delicious Asian fusion food menu and fantastic table service! The crab fried rice is delicious! Check out the menu on their website and be amazed

Yelp
I love Mango Tango... i dont think there is anything else to say lol jk Do the egg rolls are a must have... even if you don't want an appetizer--try it anyway! I like my food spicy and the level of spice they offer is not normal lol so if you can handle spice--try level 2 and work your way up! I promise that you will not be disappointed Drinks! Angelee(sp) is the best bar tender- honestly she does not miss with my Long Island ice tea!

Yelp
We had a great experience here for an early dinner yesterday. Conveniently located right off of the Square in Georgetown, I was excited to try this option for Asian cuisine. The kids had fruit smoothies that they really enjoyed along with an order of Meatball soup in Pho broth which they both gobbled up. My combo fried rice was excellent- I loved the flavor and variety of veggies and meat mixed in. Aside from delicious food, the service was super-friendly and attentive. We'll definitely be back and will keep in mind as a great take out option as well.
google avatar

Yelp
This family owned Cambodian restaurant is conveniently located steps away from Georgetown Square. The staff members are very friendly. The walls are vibrant and the menu has plenty to choose from, from entrees to boba drinks! Ooh, they also have a full bar right by the entrance. We got a couple of Khmer rice plates, steak luk lak, shrimp tempura, crab fried rice & mango sticky rice - they were all tasty and very good! We will be back when we are back in town - we have to try their boba!

Yelp
A hidden Asian gem restaurant in Georgetown. The service was amazing, as well as the food. The portions are pretty large. There's also a full bar! Ask and you shall receive! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Wanted to grab something different and local, so the wife had heard about this place and decided to get takeout. Ordering online was fast and easy. Pickup was low contact as well. We always try to get an appetizer from a new place so decided on our fave potstickers. These were a little different than your normal Chinese takeout. I'm not sure if they were overfried or it was the meat, but it was a little tough. But a bonus is a large order you get 12-15. She ordered the Ginger Delight with beef and spice level 1. She's not a spice fan and said it was spicy for her. I had a taste and it was ginger forward as expected with the name of the dish. Came with a side of rice. I had the Beef Vermicelli with spice level 2. When ordering online it recommends if you like spice to go at that level. There was a linger of heat as I ate the dish, so I can only imagine what level 5 would be. The dish had great flavor, better than other places I have tried. I like my dishes "wet" so next time I will ask for extra fish sauce. I order an extra egg roll on the side. I'll be back for something different and will update this when I do.

Yelp
Oh no?' Your drunk on the gtown square ?! Oh no?! Do you WANT HELP?!?!?!!! You hit up mango tango !!! They have all the drinks and all the noodle dishes to fulfill your drunken cravings too. This place is family owned , they have been around the world In Search of there authentic recipes. The husband owns the place, and the wife cooks the food (typical American relationship, I know ) HEAR ME OUT : The food is Too authentic to pass up. The service is impressionable and relatable, To pass up. Support local and don't regret ! Try the bubble tea and the vermicelli you won't regret it !!!

Yelp
The food is excellent here and the staff is very nice. They do have a rush every now and then and it takes time to get food however, it normally during weekends. It is a must try for the area!

Yelp
Good vermicelli, seems like noodles are thinner than most other similar restaurants but the sauce was great

Yelp
The service here was great. The two ladies that were working the bar and waiting on the tables were fun, helpful, and you could tell they really wanted us to love their food. They were passionate about the restaurant and it was palpable. Now to the food, we had the lettuce wraps (8/10) they were light, the meat was well seasoned and I enjoyed the little side of pickled veggies. Next was the pasta Cambodia, essentially Pad Thai with egg on top. The portion size was large and shareable. (7/10) the prices were reasonable as well. A few things that I think would make this place awesome...they definitely need a rework of the interior, it gave me sports bar vibes from the early 2000's. Also, they had a full bar, but we weren't given a drink menu. I feel like they have a lot of opportunity to make this place super fun and draw a big crowd. Maybe a rotating drink special for example, Tiki Drink Tuesday or white wine Wednesday, you get the point.

Christian L.

Yelp
Had a great experience, food was great as well as their service and the overall vibe is just immaculate. Loved the open mic performance!

Yelp
My wife and I found this place and stopped by on our way into town. It was a Friday night so they had live music. There aren't too many places to sit, so we were smack dab in front of the band. They weren't bad. So that got them one star. However, what lost a star for me was the fact that we ordered our appetizers about 10-15 minutes before our main course and the main came out before the appetizers. Which was weird since it was the meatballs and the small egg rolls. Another star I took off was because my wife's crab fried rice came with about half a bag of cilantro on top and the menu said nothing about it. Super disappointing since she has the allergy that makes it taste like soap. We just scraped it off and ate it. But the rice was very dry and the sauce that came with it was level ten Spicy. Overall, it was a good experience to try this place. But in all honesty, we won't be back. There was nothing monumental or astounding that makes us go WOW. the food was okay and the atmosphere was loud and chill.

Yelp
It was a busy weekend in Georgetown so every restaurant near the square was full. Thankfully we got lucky and got a table at Mango Tango. My friend wanted to try this place and the reviews looked pretty good. Given how busy Georgetown was, we expected things to take a little while, no problem there. However, I started to suspect we would have some issues when the table next to us (a group of 4) got their entrees in seemingly random staggered timing. I noticed another table got some of their entrees, then their appetizers, then more entrees. We ordered an appetizer first, then our entrees. We never received the appetizer. Okay, they're busy, not the end of the world I guess. It was still on our ticket, so it was definitely ordered. We had to clarify before paying that we never received it so we wouldn't be charged. For entrees, my friend had the spicy green beans, which she said were just OK. I had the bun-rice vermicelli mix with beef and unfortunately it lacked flavor. We were both disappointed. The staff was busy but very friendly. They had live music on the Saturday night we were there. I was just disappointed by the food and the odd timing - or complete lack - of dish arrivals.

Yelp
Food is out of this world!!! The owner was really generous with his hospitality, he made some really bold promises about the food. The part he won me over is how highly he speaks about his wife! Being that I run a spouse run business I really found something to connect on. Hats off to these guys!

Colton K.

Yelp
As someone who has lived in Cambodia for 2 years, I can say this is the most authentic Cambodian food I've had in the U.S. Great atmosphere, great friendly service. I've taken friends and family here and they've all loved it and are frequent customers now. Highly recommend everyone to try it out.

Yelp
There is only one word to describe every dish on the menu - yummy!! The fresh ingredients, flavorful sauces and spices and outstanding customer service make this place a real home away from home. I easily eat here once a week. Unchalee is a master mixologist, who loves a challenge. Her drinks are tasty and her dynamic personality has made me a regular at Mango. A few of my favorite dishes you MUST try: -Shrimp Bites -Tilapia -Bacon Fried Rice -Beef Luk Luk -Vermicelli Bowl A few of my favorite drinks you MUST try: -Superman -Purple Haze -Anything Unchalee recommends Do your palate a favor and go check them out!

Yelp
My friends and I happen to be in Georgetown and on whim we saw great reviews on this place. We came in with no expectations, but they met the expectations and beyond. We went at a great time, not overly crowded. The server was great and patient with us. Loved the complimentary egg drop soup. It doesn't have that fake yellow dye color. The Cambodian pasta was great, added some hot chili for a little spice. Pho looked great but didn't try it. The Vietnamese coffee was great! My absolute favorite favorite dish was the bacon fried rice. Omg it so good. I was even contemplating ordering a plate to go! It was just so good. I would definitely order that if you happen to stumble upon this place. I'm such a lazy driver, but will mostly likely drive in from Austin for that rice!

Kim H.

Yelp
The staff greeted us at the door and seemed genuinely happy to see us. They were incredibly friendly. They guided us to meals that we both loved. I ended up with the Khmer Rice Plate. I was told it was the most Cambodian dish that they serve. Absolutely delicious! We will be coming back again and again!!!!

Amanda W.

Yelp
Everything we've had from here has been amazing. Our favorites are the pasta Cambodia, bacon fried rice and the pho. All excellent in flavor and portion
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely DELICIOUS. I am currently chowing down on their rice vermicelli entree and it's sooooooo yummy. I used doordash too, still fantastic. The spring rolls are excellent and packed full of filling as well!
google avatar

Leah M.

Yelp
The staff was accommodating and amazing. We had Pasta Cambodia our kiddo had chicken fried rice. I started out with Bahn Xao tacos that weren't my fav so I switched to the Khmer Street noodles. We will be back, for sure!.
google avatar

Krynn L.

Yelp
So good!! Picked up the pasta Cambodia and Thai tea with boba for lunch and went back for dinner with a friend for crab fried rice, appetizers, and DRINKS!! Also enjoyed talking with the bartender. Apparently the whole family works there
google avatar

Yelp
I typically order takeout when I'm visiting my friend in Georgetown. FYI, I've never eaten at the restaurant but it's always busy at dinner time. I'm addicted to their bacon fried rice, Pasta Cambodia, & their boba drinks. My friend loves their Khmer tea. I usually don't order fried rice but their bacon fried rice is exceptional. I also like their Taro rolls. It's definitely worth checking out. I haven't found anything like it in Austin yet.
google avatar

Megan A.

Yelp
The pho just had a very interesting flavor to it that I wasn't a big fan of. Had kind of a sweet flavor to it, it was just odd. Maybe other people will like it but I just didn't. Nothing compares to 888 in Austin
google avatar

Yelp
I recently finally ordered delivery take out from Mango Tango and it was delicious! I'm going to try again and eat there (I feel like no matter what the food type is, eating it fresh from the kitchen is always better!)
google avatar

Yelp
Yummy! Good service and food was wonderful. Really enjoyed the Cambodian Pasta. Will be back.

Yelp
Such delicious and authentic Cambodian food for dinner tonight at Mango Tango. I neglected to take pictures but it was so good. The place is a little hole in the wall in Georgetown. The ladies running the front were super friendly and answered all our questions about the food. I love mango sticky rice and theirs did not disappoint. Not too sweet, served warm. Yummy.

Yelp
Came in here to try out something new. First, as seems required these days, the restaurant is taking COVID precautions seriously it seems - everyone was masked, only about 4 tables inside, etc. I was pleased with that. The food was really good. Being from DFW area, it's hard to find non-generic Asian restaurants around here like I was used to up there - this place fits the bill though. All the ingredients were fresh, and even the kids had things they liked. We had multiple wontons, pho, tacos, fried rice, and smoothies. They even had a decent selection of beers on tap. Looses a star foe the interior. Decor was minimal, and the place seemed open to the back where they were making the smoothies and had drink stuff along the wall. Overall, will be coming back... but maybe for takeout instead.
google avatar

Alexandra L.

Yelp
Delicious! We were drawn to this place because we heard they have a spicy rating for their food. For us, its always a challenge to test our spicy tastebuds. We ordered steak and garlic noodles level 2. Also ordered Bacon fried rice level 3 with some fried wontons. Everything was excellent and definitely homemade feel. We felt the heat but notspicy enough for us at those levels but thankfully we found a place where we can keep going up on the heat! We finished off the night by ordering lunch for the following day at work at a level 5. We're pumped to see how it tastes.

Yelp
So I've only gotten their Khmer Boba tea, which is basically their version of Thai Tea, but it was sooo good!! Service was super quick and very polite, and the food the server had looked and smelled AMAZING! I'm definitely going back to try their food soon!

Rogelio G.

Yelp
Nice little hidden spot with amazing food! Service is genuine and friendly. Great menu. Definitely will be back!

Yelp
Honestly, you can't come up in here with the ignorant expectation of the "pasta" being like italian spaghetti or the steak luk lak like Chinese beef and broccoli because this is not a fake American Chinese restaurant. This place is truthfully a Cambodian Restaurant and on the menu AND off the menu items sprinkled with some Asian Fusion for you folks that really insist on those. And if you've never had Khmer food before, say hello and experience the good difference. To be honest, the off menu stuff is where it's at and if you're really into a treat let me tell you that during crawfish season, this will blow your mind. Again, off the menu and highly encourage for you to call in and preorder by Thurs for the weekend. It's Viet/Cajun with a personal twist crawfish. That's right, Deckhand without the long wait. It comes with sausage potato and corn without extra charge. The sauce is garlicy, spicy, buttery, with a little sweet tang and it can come with a side of garlicy fish sauce and rice it you wish. We went with a crew ate outside was and was by far my favorite experience with Mango Tango. Folks kept passing by and asking how it was. If you're the devil and don't like crawfish, off the menu, Cambodian dishes is where it's at. I've also had their Hot and Sour Beef and Water Spinach Soup. Piping hot, huge portions of delicious tendon on beef sliced in a bold tamarind broth. Pour over rice and it's homestyle cooking. Their Steak Luk Lak is a similar dish to the Vietnamese Bo Luc Lac but extra saucy and has a bit more tang over a bed of fresh lettuce (because this is how this dish is traditionally served) Their Khmer Plate and Cambodian Pasta are my on the menu favorites. The Khmer Plate comes rice, pickled vegetables, grilled pork and sliced up omelette. Their pasta - think of Thai Pad Thai but top with a thing flavorful omelette. Their raspberry magarita that comes out in a iced shaker is divine. Crab fried rice, piping hot with small crab bits mixed within. I've gone back over and over again.
