Best Restaurants in the AUC Near Spelman, Morehouse, and Clark Atlanta University | Eater Atlanta

"Located just east of downtown Atlanta around the corner from Sweet Auburn Curb Market, counter-service restaurant Mangos Caribbean is where to head for oxtails, curry goat, jerk chicken and brown stew chicken. Pescatarians also love the red snapper and kingfish prepared several ways, including escovitch and butter-sauced. Don’t skip dessert at Mangos, like rum raisin cheesecake or the bread pudding." - Mike Jordan

Best Caribbean and Jamaican Restaurants in Atlanta | Eater Atlanta

"Hit Mango’s, just east of Downtown, when the craving for jerked foods hits; especially in the wee hours of the morning between Thursday and Sunday. The restaurant isn’t heavily decorated, but it’s clean and appointed with plenty of seating. Enjoy ackee and saltfish (the national dish of Jamaica) here as well as callaloo (imagine a hybrid of greens and seaweed), vegetable plates, and “rasta pasta” for those on vegan diets. Other dishes to try include the kingfish and red snapper prepared either escovitch-style with peppers and vinegar, as a traditional brown stew, or with butter sauce." - Mike Jordan

Google
Traveled over an hour to come here! But we waited almost 2 hours and sent back both pastas bc there was no sauce! I will say the Rum punch was so good! Oxtails were some of the best I've had though! Also very hot inside. As to we waited hours for food to be fixed, It was just to hot.

I went to Mango’s and had the WORST service I’ve ever experienced — all because of the girl at the front named DIAMOND. From the moment I walked in, she was RUDE, DRY, and completely UNWELCOMING. I asked for a simple substitution (cabbage instead of plantains — same price), and she flat-out said NO without even checking. I asked her to please ask the kitchen, and she did — with a nasty attitude — and of course, they said YES right away. No apology. No “my bad.” Just more attitude. Then she rang up the wrong rice. I specifically asked for seasoned rice — I do not eat white rice — and when I told her, she argued with me like she knew my diet better than I do. No accountability. No respect. Just straight-up disrespectful energy from beginning to end. The food was fine, but Diamond’s nasty attitude ruined the whole experience. If she’s working the front, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. I love supporting my people — but this experience made me never want to step foot in that restaurant again.

Google
I used to be a very loyal customer of Mango’s, but recently I’ve noticed longer wait times and smaller portions. Today I ordered a LARGE ox tail plate, and received 3 of the smallest ox tails (literally). The ox tails came as the side and not the main portion. Highly disappointed and definitely would NOT recommend for $35.

Google
I Atlanta this qualifies as 5 star Jamaican food. However, if youre from NYC, FLL or MIA...actually even if you just now what those abbreviations stand for, this is thr most mid, probably too salty, Jamaican food. If you knownwhat or where "Half Tree" is, this food disgust you. That aside, if you're in downtown Atlanta, its the best Atlanta has to offer. Also, its too loud inside to be able to enjoy the meal. I have no idea why restaurants pump in music so loud you cant hear yourself think or even chew.

Google
I was charged $47 and charged for a pasta that I did not receive all the items that I asked for. I ordered the oxtail pasta and was only sent plain pasta. I called the restaurant to ask for a refund and the person, who answered the call did not care at all about my concerns. I was told that a refund would be processed and nothing has been done to resolve the issue. I am highly disappointed because I was excited to try this place.

Google
So I visited mangos for the 1st and kind of disappointed when I got in, and the girl was at the cash register. I asked her about certain things on the menu and asked her could I substitute the plantains she said no so I specifically made an order with no plantains and I paid extra for mac & cheese. I got plantains instead and still no mac & cheese first and last time for everything I definitely won’t be back. as you can clearly see on my receipt it says no plantains and an extra charge for the baked mac & cheese, and I got the total opposite disappointed.

Google
Good value for money. There is a discounted rate for lunch and the portion size is good. My meal tasted okay, but I wasn't very fond of the taste. Maybe that's how it's supposed to taste. Go try yourselves, it is a good deal for the price.

Google
Place has gone down the drain over the years. Got food poisoning from there. The other two locations were apparently shut down because of bad management so how in the world is this one still open is mind blowing. Roaches in the bathrooms, food not prepared right, it’s just horrible all around. Will NEVER be stepping any of my toes in this establishment again, if it last any longer.

Yelp
Whoever makes the Mac & cheese here sucks, get the person who made it at the west end location in the kitchen. I will say, this is one of my favorite spots to eat at. It's in a historical area, I love the neighboring businesses. The food (excluding the mac) is always good. The people are cool, the music is great and the food is excellent. I've never had a bad plate from them (excluding the mac). My family is always happy every time I bring them here.

Yelp
Lady at front counter was very nice. However, I ordered rice and peas($5.25), and received a half order of pease and rice. When she looked at it, and new that it was unacceptable. She added more, when I went to eat it- it was cold and crunchy, not savory AT ALL. They have no pride in the appearance nor taste of the food. Even the container was dirty. We were thoroughly disappointed.

Yelp
An ATL local recommended this place and is located on Auburn Ave right down the street from the Martin Luther King Jr National Park. It's a great stop to fill up after visiting the park. For us it was a toss up between the ox tail or curry goat, but we ended up ordering the curry goat large and a jerk chicken pattie. The large curry goat was a big portion and definitely enough for two people. This dish does have bones so be aware of that. It comes with sides of rice & beans, greens, and sweet plantains. This dish was really good. The curry was flavorful and rice complimented the dish. The plantains were also nice. The only disappointment was the jerk chicken pattie. It was super dry and not very much meat. Each bite had to be followed with water because your saliva would dry out, so I don't recommend the patties! Plenty of seating inside with friendly waitstaff, however they play really loud music blasting from the speakers so don't expect to carry on a lengthy conversation without yelling! Also the menu says lunch special is until 3 PM, but when we tried ordering that the waitress said it ended at 2 PM and it says there is free WiFi, but none of the staff knew the password so I guess that is all fake news! Regardless, the food was great and I would return in a heartbeat!

Yelp
Popped my head into this spot after being next door at M Bar for an event. I love Caribbean food so it was an easy 'yes' when I saw the Jamaican flags in the window. When I walked in, it was so dim that they could have easily been mistaken as closed for the day. But they were actually serving about 7 customers, not including me. Pretty good for a weekday early evening. I wasn't super hungry, moreso, greedy. So I didn't opt for a large dish, as tempting as they were as I perused the menu. The line was moving briskly as it seemed that most guests were waiting around for their plated entrees. Once I was called up to the cashier, I decided to keep it simple and go for a beef patty, coco bread and champagne kola. Always a favorite, simple combo of mine. Less than 5 minutes after ordering, I was called back up and given a hot, huge piece of cocoa bread, a warm beef patty from the display case and I grabbed an ice-cold champagne kola from the fridge. I decided to take a seat and enjoy my food as the coco bread smelled too good to hold off on. Lucky for me, there was a bunch of seating and every other guest was standing and waiting. Upon first glance, I saw that the patty was quite thin but kept pushing. Once I put my patty in the bread (a must), it looked very sad compared to the thick piece of sweet bread. The coco bread was amazingggg, always a fave of mine. But man, there was like, no beef in the patty. :( I was bummed because the flavor was really there! But it could have used 3x more filling to make it a real treat. Although a 3 - 3.5 star experience for me right now, I'll go back one day and try them again and opt for an entree. :)

Yelp
Could be made at home, front desk girls was a little bit rude and the jerk sauce is not a traditional jerk. More like a bbq flavored with hot spice added to it

The T.

Yelp
Female Cashier, rude, period. Bathroom stinky and toilet filled with poo and tissue dirty af and no paper towels. Rice and peas dry as a desert. Old mushy disgusting plantains. 0/0 for a $30 meal. Not to mention the whole area is an eyesore. Will never waste a penny of my $$$ here again.

Yelp
It's probably a ATL thing but $22 fi salt fish with a dash of ackee is wild business. The food was good but slightly at room temperature which made it less YUM! Patty is a must get but clearly it didn't make the photo op.
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
The food was very tasty! They offer lunch specials so check the website for the exact hours but the portion size was more than enough to enjoy. The jerk chicken was juicy & spicy. Everything was fresh & authentic. The curry chicken patty was good as well. The inside of the restaurant appeared to be like a typical Jamaican restaurant with music playing but the lighting was pretty low. I would get the food to go next time.

Yelp
The food was better most of the places around. Was looking a for a good homemade meal and it give that . The service was quick . Been at the west end spot that they had a couple years ago and it happy I found their second locations . I love the dim space give you a nice vibe to eat and go about your business.
google avatar

Calbin L.

Yelp
I enjoy Caribbean cuisine, however, this establishment makes it a challenge to do so. The service was very cordial. The jerk chicken rolls tasted like boiled chicken wrapped in dough. The rice was hard and not fully cooked. The $32 oxtails were mostly fatty warm overs. The margarita was a poor blend of juice and mix. Final tab: $72 bucks. I graciously gave it 2 Stars in hopes that it will find it true calling in some other field-preparing Caribbean style food is just not for you.
google avatar

Nicole D.

Yelp
Such a yummy combination of bold flavors and spice. Eating the jerk shrimp felt like a burst of spices in your mouth at the perfect proportions. I wish the rice had more peas and they added a good proportion of sweet plantains, but I had never had the sweet cabbage and wasn't expecting for it to blend so perfectly with the dish. It's a little on the heavy side in terms of oil, but it's a hidden flavor gem. The restaurant itself is not pretty, and is questionably empty during the day, but you can order takeout or eat with some friends in one of their dimly lit booths.
google avatar

Jayvon B.

Yelp
The service in here is awful. They are sooooooo unprofessional. They have kids while at work (which I kinda understand) but not every time. The ladies where crocs and no hair bonnets. They do never have drinks in stock. The food isn't that good to be this unprofessional! the one in the photo is the least professional of the bunch.
google avatar

Anaja F.

Yelp
Service was great, I got oxtail rice and cabbage and I only got three oxtails and rice was soaked in gravy, which wouldn't be such a bad thing but it gave oxtail gravy with a side of rice. Food was alright not the best or most authentic Caribbean food.
google avatar

William G.

Yelp
Downtown Atlanta somewhere. Recommended here by Jamaican friend. I had beef Pattie w coco bread & Red Stripe, this was good but can't base restaurant on pattie alone. Wife had jerk chicken regular size bc oxtail priced at $32 which is high for us. The jerk chicken was stew chicken not jerk, rice was not good. Bill was around $25. Stew chicken was ok just not what expected when ordered. I'm not sure how the owner expects to pass stew chicken off as jerk and retain business. Middle of road option as of now; Patties on point.

Yelp
Worst experience EVER! We ordered at 7:34pm Curry and Pasta we waited in the resturant because we felt time should go pretty fast ! It didn't we actually waited a hour and 15 minutes for these MEDIOCRE FOOD. Aside from waiting for the food which after the hour I went up to the counter like where's the food ...? They grabbed it cafeteria style after i asked so why the hell did it take a hour to sloop some food. PLUS why were the kitchen staff about to fight literally someone picked up a knife , they cussing eachother out, the lady at the counter isn't informing ppl it will take a hour plus. I don't recommend at all i give them and this is me being generous a 3/10 DO NOT EAT HERE .
google avatar

Dey A.

Yelp
I was in Atlanta just for a few hours and had a cravin for Jamaican! I got the oxtail and it was one of the best I've ever had. SUPER flavorful! It seems like the rice may have been old or not cooked evenly because there were several hard pieces of rice. Despite all that this place felt disgusting. Trash on the floor... unkept bathroom. There was even a random shovel in the corner. I was able to find a clean (enough) table to eat but I felt uncomfortable. The music was super loud as well. The woman who took my order was extremely nice though. She did a good job, especially when I'm used to good Jamaican food=rude customer service. I would give the place another chance because the oxtail was that good but I would get it to-go. I also got a beef patty that was perfectly flaky and the perfect amount of spicy.
google avatar

Donnell O.

Yelp
I live in an area where Caribbean food is plentiful but Mangos would definitely hold its own. They would have gotten a 5 star rating, had they had beef patties available. I loved the lady who took my order she was legit with the qualifier questions that lead me to the proper meal. Located on what seems to be part college campus and a miniature local hang out the restaurant is cozy and situated properly for the "real island" feel. Whenever I'm in Atlanta again I'll go back.
google avatar

Andrew S.

Yelp
Came for lunch with a group recently. The restaurant felt like it hadn't been cleaned since the night before. They were also out of a lot of options and the person behind the counter was quite confused about the menu. Finally the food itself (jerk chicken and rice) was bland and lacked any sort of kick. Might be better as a late night spot.
google avatar

Danielle T.

Yelp
Food was far better than expected! Very good seasoning authentic to Jamaican food! The service was ok! Not good not bad just ok! The ambiance is in need of work! No order to the seating, kind of confusing as you're not greeted by anyone when you walk in and because we're visiting from California we had no idea we ordered at the counter and seat ourselves! But it's a mom and pop spot so my honey and I said , the food better be good! He's Jamaican and very picky about authentic versus Colonized Caribbean cooking! He liked it! We also got rum punch! That was on point!!!! A couple of things we hoped to get ( nanny and fried dumplings) were not in the menu! That was disappointing! Overall good food! Oh that auto gratuity if BS and should be illegal! Ijs

Mary W.

Yelp
There was glass in my food I was so mad and I tried to report no help at all it was so scary

Tori W.

Yelp
The "MANAGER" there needs a life evaluation. HORRIBLE customer sevice. ATTITUDE was poor. Just "forgot" to put utensils in my bag. NEVER swiping my car again at this place til she is gone.

Erin M.

Yelp
The food here is terrible the rice was very mushy, the brown stew chicken was not good at all. Just because you sever late night food it doesn't have to be nasty. If I could give zero stars I would but I can't.
google avatar

Tex W.

Yelp
The food is fantastic, especially the beef patties and the Jerk chicken plate. Also, the fruit punch drink is strong, tread lightly. The owner is such an awesome and inspiring fella. Definitely a vibe for some good Caribbean food and drinks.

Nevaeh W.

Yelp
Really good. Like i finished this whole plate in one sitting. Definitely gonna be my go to meal from now on when hungry. It takes a minute for them to cook stuff but that could be because there's probably one person in the kitchen or they make everything fresh , probably ..idk I'm sure it's a good reason though.. I recommend! I would've ate inside , I felt comfortable and it wasn't packed or dirty or anything it was quiet and clean and I went on a Saturday night.

Jules S.

Yelp
The best Rasta pasta and oxtails I've had so far in Georgia! Coming from New York it has been hard to find meaty and delicious oxtails not those little skinny ones! The peas and rice were delicious and their rum punch is outstanding!
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
Was hungry and decided too stop here and grabbed some food . Got oxtail and brown stew chicken . It was good and not to bad . Not amazing but it was good but i still ate that thing up .
google avatar

Lauren F.

Yelp
Good food, good service, & open late so that's a plus. Will be back. Authentic Caribbean food.

T S.

Yelp
Experience Restroom broken for women. I used the male restroom as my friend stood outside. An employe verbally attacked my friend bc they notified them the restroom was in use. As women shouldn't also use the available bathroom if their other bathroom are broken. A second employee blamed women for the horrible condition. How am I to blame? Do I now not get to use the restroom as I wait 45 minutes for my food. I've been here several times over the yrs but this is the last time. Food Room temperature patties. Im sure it violates healthcode standards. The callalou was cold. We were served rice n pea's without peas. The pasta was okay, however, it was overcooke.
google avatar

Adam I.

Yelp
Passed through to the Edgewood location in the middle of the night with a friend. Nostalgic moments next door at the dragonfly. The Cabbage and Rice/peas were like no other Caribbean restaurant in Atlanta. We ordered brown stew and jerk chicken. We couldn't stay out of each others plates. My new find for late night treats!

Blaze B.

Yelp
I made an online order after getting off work and I drove 45 min just for them to be closed at 12 when the hours say 4am I order online so I was even more mad that I paid my money and now I have to take off work in morning to come up there when they open just so I can get refund because as I Try to ask the guy who finally came outside why are they close early and how do I go about getting my refund and he told me that's not his problem all I'm saying is if you guys don't be closed 3 to 4 hrs before closing change that because people can still order online

Tyler S.

Yelp
Call to make sure they have what you order! They rely on delivery drivers to call the customers when they are out of certain items/entrees. They also hand out orders without confirming them so your order may of been stolen prior to you getting there as has happened to me countless times. Limited STREET parking ONLY (not free) the chances of your order being ready before you arrive are slim to none. I've given this place many chances today was my last attempt. Avoid!!!

Sam M.

Yelp
I have come here for over 6 years.. process and services were always amazing.. cut to 2023.. it was extremely bad. Rude. And the sales lady and the chef tried to tell me the price was never 16 dollars n 18 dollars for the Large plate.. the plate is 32 dollars now. (I left a tip)... but I don't believe an establishment should treat customer like they don't know what they are talking about. They even suggested maybe another restaurant. Mind you I only come to this place.. here is a menu with the obvious price that I know what it cost before N yes. Cost of living rises. I understand. N I would have been ok with the price.. but don't pretend I don't know as a loyal customer. .

Savannah H.

Yelp
The service wasn't good the lady that took my order had a slight attitude. payed $37 dollars for the food and got 3 out of 4 beef patties and curry chicken the rice and chicken was hard to chew.
google avatar

N W.

Yelp
My stepson ordered Uber eats from here tonight. 2 orders of jerk chicken and there was a dead fly in one of the orders!! He had already noticed substitutions for things he had ordered but a fly?!! Disgusting
google avatar

Gregg N.

Yelp
The food was great we all had to go boxes! BUT quality takes time! It took a while for our party to get our food. It was raining extremely hard that day. That made the floor very slippery, be careful. I ordered the curry chicken. It was a large serving size! As with many Caribbean meals, it was piled on top of each other: rice & peas, cabbage, plantains, covered in curry chicken. My son ordered the jerk chicken. It was too spicy for him, so I ended up eating it for him. 'Twas tasty
google avatar

Lisa A.

Yelp
Mangos food be smackin!!! Their Mac n cheese is probably the best in Atlanta! The rice and peas doesn't miss and the roti *chefs kiss* Mangos is definitely a must-try for visitors to Atlanta and even Atlanta natives...but make sure you go early enough because the food often sells out because they're so popular. The staff are also very friendly which is always a plus . Definitely recommend this spot and I can't wait to try more items from them.
google avatar

Keith W.

Yelp
Food is decent, but the service is AWFUL. Went all the way there to place an order since you cant call in. I asked why they dont take online orders. I was rudely told to look over at the orders on the counter. Thats your answer? How about, our apologies about the website. Im hungry AF, but I will not waste money on awful service and ok food. They already had one location close in the West End. You would think they would learn. Nope. This one will be gone too if they dont treat customers with respect. With the par food. It aint that hard. On my way to The Food Shoppe instead. Its better anyway.
google avatar

Skins K.

Yelp
Incredible food. Incredible vibes. Place had a line out the door right after we came in at 1:30am
google avatar

Aysha S.

Yelp
The lady at the front desk was nice and the prices are fair for the market and the amount of food they give you. The brown stew chicken, jerk chicken and oxtails were all good. I also had beef and curry chicken patties that were pretty good as well. Mac and cheese was decent. I was leaning towards a 3.5 but it's more personal taste than a negative reflection of the food.
google avatar

Marcus F.

Yelp
Fodd is mediocre at best. But the real problem is the rude service that's all too predictable at this restaurant. I'm currently standing in the restaurant at 9:26pm waiting for an online order that's 20 minutes over the anticipated time. To add insult to injury the lady at the counter has the typical rude entitled attitude as though it's our pleasure to have her service us smh.
google avatar

Darren N.

Yelp
Don't order online for pick up! I did through UberEats and had to wait an hour for my food because the woman forgot my order or ignored it in the system. This is a sit down bar & restaurant. They have no system or priority for to-go orders. It's not worth it to order over an app.
google avatar

Anthony J.

Yelp
The food is so bland! The ppl maybe island but the food is not. I know for a fact my brown stew taste better. Maybe it's just this location I been to the one in Marietta that was better, however these Jamaican spots in Atlanta has nothing on Florida!!!! #FLABoy Only good Jamaican food I had in atlanata this lady that work at my job made me some ackee and salt fish!!! It was fye

Lamont Jr R.

Yelp
The beef Pattie's taste like they were cooked in the microwave. The customer service was horrible the inside looks like someone's garage and the food is over price and the curry taste and look like sand water, do not waste your time

Monica D.

Yelp
Mangos is one of the greatest caribbean restuarants out! When you step into mangos, it feels like you are on a trip on St. Simon's Island. The food is delicious. The reggae is loud and inviting, makes you dance. The rum punch is juice for the soul. The employees and the family of the business are so homey! They make you feel like you are apart of their family. I love mangos and i will continue to go there and bring my family and friends.
google avatar

Ciera F.

Yelp
The food was Soo good! We got jerk chicken, rice and peas, cabbage, plantains, and beef Patties. The quality and taste were on point! Lunch special was a great price of 12.50! Love love love this Jamaican food! Can't wait to come back here for more!
google avatar

Chauncie R.

Yelp
The red snapper curry is heaven. My colleague refer me to this place. Bring I just moved from Houston and pescatarian and live near . Its sp good
google avatar

Paige A.

Yelp
The music was too loud to comfortably talk and there was a section for a hostess but I guess on sundays you order at the bar. We decided to embrace the experience and go for it. The food was so good. So so so good. I'd eat here in a heartbeat but would get it to go.
google avatar

Racheal R.

Yelp
I used to love this place. The quality of the food has declined and it's not a place where you can come in and enjoy your food like it used to be.

Jenny T.

Yelp
Co-workers and I arrived at the spot around 11:30am for lunch. Upon arrival, we walked in and was given the worst greeting and attitude from a woman. The restaurant was fairly cleaned but very cluttered and outdated. The food was decent, I've had better Jamaican entrees in the past. We thought we would try something new. My co worker was a vegetarian hoping to feast on a tofu meal but the woman said that they are not serving tofu until after noon. We then sat down to discuss what to order and the woman hollers "you have to over here, ya hear" not a place for us and we won't be retuning to this location.

Jewel C.

Yelp
I've been coming to this location for years. The best Jamaican food in Atlanta in my opinion. The oxtail, curry chicken, Patties, and brown stew chicken are all tasty. Portion sizes are decent. The side dishes are great. Friendly customer service and nice dining space. This is the only location I refer to out of towners. Avoid the one in the west end.
