Manhattan Cafe Review - Athens Ga - The Infatuation

"It’s easy to mistake this dive bar for a shuttered downtown business. But inside the barred windows and unassuming entrance, Manhattan Cafe is a charmingly eclectic cocktail paradise that fills with more locals than students (likely thanks to a strict no-fake ID policy). The mood is foreclosed-storage-unit-chic with antique dolls hanging from the ceiling and threadbare couches held together by sheer willpower. And it’s the only bar we’ve been to where it’s quite normal to read a book by lamplight and drink solo—there's also unlimited free popcorn. They make great classic cocktails, like the gimlet and moscow mule, and a silky-sweet espresso martini that’s rightfully the talk of town. photo credit: Sarah Newman" - Delaney Tarr

One bartender on 1/24 at 11:50 pm gave the worst service I have ever witnessed. I saw a group of 2 girls walk in and try to order drinks, and unfortunately for them, this bartender was BELLIGERENTLY drunk behind the bar. She threw the IDs back at the ladies, as well as their credit card. She stumbled around and slurred her words while trying to make a beverage and spoke loudly and rudely about them once they sat down after getting their drinks. Everyone at the bar could hear it and it made the vibe of the establishment awkward and inhospitable. Disappointed to see a great establishment hire such an incompetent bartender.

Was a really cool bar last few times I went but the bartenders are all really rude and impersonable as of recently. It wasn’t even busy and they were short, rude, and unhelpful. Not easy to talk to and seem like they don’t want to talk to people. Would recommend checking out other towny bars.

Didn't order food but ordered shots of tequila! Good price. There was a popcorn machine! Cool atmosphere but one of the chair was almost falling apart and something poked real bad on the seat.

Amazing bar off the main strip in Athens. Much more relaxed than the other bars frequented by college students. No loud music. Great place to grab drinks with friends and have a conversation you can actually hear.

Great place to go to catch up with friends. It has been around for a long time so it is a popular spot. Sometimes a bit overcrowded but well below the khaki line. I do not frequent the Manhattan but it is a uniquely Athens bar so when I have visitors from out of town I might take them here if they want go downtown but aren't looking for a party atmosphere.

It looks strange on the outside to some, possibly, but this is a great bar. They have a jukebox and classic bar decor. There are few places like this anywhere. Queer friendly and welcoming.

By far our favorite bar in Athens. Tremendously reasonable prices for a wide selection of cocktails, beer, bourbon, and tequila, and the atmosphere and vibe is like none other. A relaxed bar for a good time

Pros: - Great atmosphere: laid back, generally void of frat kids, fun and interesting decor - Cheap prices - Seasoned bartenders - Free popcorn! This is significant. Cons: - Poor craft beer selection, but pretty reliable bells two hearted on draft - Can get a bit loud/fratty on weekends/end of school year/etc
