"There are small restaurants, there are cosy restaurants, and then there’s Mao Chow - an entirely vegan Chinese restaurant in London Fields that’s one Henry hoover away from being mistaken for an airing cupboard. Finite space aside, the thing to know about this tiny 12-seater spot is that it makes some tasty food. Their sesame dan dan noodles with soy mince, cucumber, and a sauce that we’d definitely enforce the 30-second rule for if we dropped it on the floor, are better than a lot of meat versions we’ve had in the past. And their homemade dumplings, filled with a ‘meaty veg’ mixture, are satisfying and mysterious, like an ASMR-read riddle. Not everything works here though. The good things - noodles, greens, and dumplings - are all punchy in flavour and heat. While the less good things - smacked cucumber, doughy bao, and mid-winter open door policy - can you leave you cold, both literally and figuratively. That said, this is a fine (and fitting) addition to Hackney. The walk-in, or rather squeeze-in, only policy is perfect for an unplanned noodle or dumpling stop after a pint too many up the road. And the cash-only policy separates the wheat from the chaff, though there is a free cashpoint in the garage opposite. Just make sure you bagsy a seat before doing anything else. Food Rundown photo credit: Giulia Verdinelli Dan Dan Noodles Alan Partridge would shout across a car park for these noodles. They’re nutty, spicy, and the soy mince works perfectly with them. photo credit: Giulia Verdinelli Dumplings The menu says these dumplings are filled with ‘meaty veg’ and Chinese chive. We’re not entirely sure what the former is. Maybe mushroom? Maybe something else. Whatever the mixture is, it tastes good, and there’s a serious chilli kick. photo credit: Giulia Verdinelli Oyster Mushroom Bao While the tempura mushrooms, pickled daikon, and sweet tian mian jiang mayo inside this bao taste good, the bun itself is big, doughy, and too much like chewing on the arm of the Michelin man. photo credit: Giulia Verdinelli Strange Flavour Brussel Sprouts Reads like an eight-year-old’s diary entry from Christmas Day. Tastes like Szechuan pepper and charred bits of sprout. Good, if a little overbearing. Gong Bao Asparagus Fried asparagus combined with crunchy peanuts, chilli and soy is an almost always tasty combination. It’s no different here. photo credit: Giulia Verdinelli Smacked Cucumber Seemingly more caressed than smacked, this cucumber could do with some tough love and more time in its vinegar and sesame dressing." - Jake Missing

Lovely vegan Chinese food, especially the dan dan noodles and the strange Brussels sprouts were very good! They do use lots of chili’s in the food (sometimes half of the dish consists of Chili lol) and the actual dishes are not super big without the chili’s. However, the prices are good- when I went here we ordered the whole menu including the specials! Very happy Mao Chow is here, their noodles are amazing and the fact that they work with a rotating menu based on fresh produce is amazing, even better that it’s all vegan!

Brilliant food. We literally ordered the whole menu (plus the special). Loved everything. The best dishes were the broccoli and the noodles. The place is tiny and very popular so be ready to queue for a while. Absolutely worth the wait.

Everything was really great. Loved that it seemed to come in the order it should be eaten. Cucumber, dumplings, Bao, mapo tofu and Dan Dan were all spot on 👌 I think the tofu was my fave. All had a tonne of flavour but you must be able to handle chilli 😛🌶 Enjoy!

This place is small but the food is packed with flavor and the hole in the wall experience is really something else. We had the broccoli, dumplings, tofu with rice and dan dan noodles and everything was wonderful. Dishes are drenched in chili oil but most people won’t come here because they want to eat healthy, aside from the vegan aspect. Everything was delicious and they also offer a selection of beers. Seating is limited and be prepared to squish in with folks but it sort of adds to the charm. Loved it!

Delicious spicy vegan Chinese food (though you can hardly tell it's vegan), lovely servers! Especially liked the dandan noodles.

You wouldn’t know it’s vegan if there wasn’t a sign. Very tasty, fast service! The spicy items come with a kick but it is manageable for the European palette.

Edgy vibe and good food. Very small (can only really seat 7-8 people at a time) so there may be quite some waiting time to get seated. Very limited menu (more than proportionate to the size of the place) but with some good options. I enjoyed the Dan Dan noodles, Wanzu noodles and the spicy cauliflower (which is indeed spicy as promised). The hostess was very sweet!

One of the best restaurants I’ve been to this year. Entirely vegan, this restaurant offer a very cheap and absolutely amazing food. Damn, the fried cauliflower in a peanut and soy sauce was good, as well as the chives dumplings. The staff was so warm, always smiling. We were two, took four dishes and paid £35.
