Excellent quality ingredients. Chinese cooked very well. What I love about this place is they have a great variety of different dishes they offer that you don't find in other Chinese restaurants. The restaurant is simple, not fancy. Casual. The service is very good. I don't like the fact when they are slow they handle some of the food prep in the back dining area. Other than that the food is great.

Google
The best Szechuan style Chinese food in the Chicago area and surrounding suburbs. If you love tasty and spicy food with good portion at reasonable price, this is the place. Their Dried Chili Chicken is perfect, and their Mapo Tofu is simply delicious.

Google
It is a nice genuine Chinese restaurant. I like the mopo tofu. It reminds me what I had when I was young. The lunch specials size are very decent. We enjoyed it.

Seems like this restaurant is under new management. Food was all right, but dishes seem to be on the small side for the price. Customer service could use some improvement here as our server wasn’t the most friendly person and seem to get irritated when we asked questions about some of the dishes. There are quite a few Asian restaurants in Naperville area and for the time being I would not recommend this place.

Google
Food was full of flavor and the portions were huge! Had enough leftovers for another meal. Definitely would come here again.

Google
Really great food that we got to go. The service is a three stars because we ordered a kung pao chicken but we got a kung pao tofu. We ordered over the phone and definitely said kung pao chicken, so there could have been errors at any point. It wasn’t a huge deal, it happens. For future reference, just make sure you have them repeat the order before it’s placed. Other than that the food was very good. The chicken fried rice was solid and had a good amount of chicken. The sesame balls were so so good too. The spring rolls weren’t the kind of spring rolls we thought they were. We thought they were the rolls with rice paper, but they were more like what some people, like us, call eggs rolls. There were no pictures when we were looking at on the online menu either so we didn’t know. They still tasted good though. Would definitely order from here again, and perhaps dine in too. Just make sure everything in terms of communication is clear and have them repeat the order.

Mapo used to be good, and I’ve been there frequently before. It’s been a while since I last went, and yesterday I ordered four dishes for takeout. To my dismay, all of them turned out to be so bad—the meats in them tasted very stale. The braised pork hock didn’t look braised at all and tasted expired. I ordered orange chicken for my kids, as it’s one of their favorite Chinese dishes, but even the heavy sauce couldn’t cover the bad taste or the fact that the meat was probably expired for a long time. We ended up throwing away three of the four dishes. I’m so disappointed and won’t be going back.

Google
I’ve been here so many times, but only now writing a review. This place has held up and even gotten better over the years. We got the crab rangoons, cumin lamb, honey glazed sesame chicken, and the orange beef - everything was so good. The orange beef was very tasty, the perfect crunch and texture, and cooked well. I always order the cumin lamb here and it’s a pretty healthy (non-fried) dish with plenty of veggies. The crab rangoons were also pretty authentic and had a good filling.

Yelp
My dad and I come here fairly often for good Chinese fare. It's been around for years and happily still going strong. They have both American style Chinese dishes on the menu as well as items that are obviously more authentic. I personally love the dish of spicy pickled cabbage they give you when you first sit down! We usually get Mongolian beef and kung Pao beef, and they are always good. The dishes are so huge that two could share, or you can take home lots of leftovers. It's spacious enough in the restaurant that even when it's crowded, it's never loud. Service is on the ball. A great place in Naperville for a Chinese meal!

Yelp
Checked out this kind of hidden Chinese restaurant and it was much better than expected. It still isn't the best but it's among the better places in Naperville. Mapo Restaurant has quite a few options. Has lots of options for everyone almost. There's both Americanized and authentic offerings with various levels of spiciness. Basic looking Chinese restaurant inside. It's actually better than it looks outside. This place is kind of hidden because it's located in a crappy building with a parking lot that makes it hard to get to. Came in and it wasn't busy. We were about the only ones in there. It's about $11 for a lunch special, which includes soup. This isn't that great of a special if you don't want the soup though. Has a lot of choices. The best one obviously has to be Mapo Tofu. Of course it's the signature item. This is soft tofu in a spicy sauce along with some onions and peppers. For sure it's pretty good even though it's not all authentic. It's located close to the H Mart. There's a few things for vegans and vegetarians.

Yelp
Returned after a long absence for a take-out order of mapo tofu. Generous serving, nicely packaged -- including an egg roll and fortune cookie --but the flavor was off: mostly just chilis, a very few fermented black beans, and no discernable Sichuan peppercorns -- no mala! This used to be better.

Angry P.

Yelp
Tried this place. Ordered a lunch sweet and sour chicken. I didn't love the fact that the sauce didn't come on the side (it was all over the chicken and was way too sweet). I would have preferred for the sauce to come on the side like most places. it was a little light on the chicken as opposed to the fried part component. pricing was reasonable at around $11. Parking free in front.

Yelp
It's clean. It's delicious. Note: The Jajangmyun is very Peking and NOT Korean. I hate it. But it's my own fault cuz they did explain that to me and I'm just a dummy. Note: The Japanese style Salt and Pepper Tofu is my absolute favorite and delicious. Just beyond my words. The service is very nice... I never feel rushed. And just yeah. A great spot to have a meal. They have a lot for parking.

Yelp
Somehow Mapo flies under the radar for Chinese cuisine in the burbs. Locals will appreciate the authentic menu options and Sichuan dishes. Interior is warm and inviting. It's in the same plaza as H Mart but on the side by Wendy's. Lots of parking. Contrary to popular belief, not everything on the menu is spicy, but Mapo does specialize in these types of dishes. My table was a big fan of the fried eggplant, but I loved the cumin lamb as did everyone else with me. Service is great and attentive. Water was always refilled and water asked if everything was okay. Glad I came back and gave this another chance.

Yelp
Excellent variety of dishes the chefs here can make. There are a couple stand outs. Quality- the hou fun, peppercorn fish, calamari, duck, and lemon/orange shrimp here are really good. I'm also a big fan of the beef tendon and most fish dishes here. Quantity- they give a generous portion for the price Atmosphere- nice clean open place. Lots of seating options Service- fast

Yelp
Came here for Father's Day around 12 and it was empty. It filled up by the time we left though. Loved the chili dishes and it came out pretty quick. Chili beef - great flavor and I liked the tendon slices Beef roll - just ok. Scallion pancake flavor was a little lacking Dry chili chicken - pretty salt but great with veggies and rice Pea shoots - standard Chili lamb - not gamey and really flavorful. Peppers were nice Eggplant wrapped shrimp - unique dish Egg tofu - standard Orange chicken - strong orange flavor. The kids loved this Walnut shrimp - really crispy and sweet Xiao long BAO - pretty standard

Yelp
Mapo Restaurant is truly a hidden treasure in Naperville. When my husband and I visited with a few friends, we found it in a small strip mall with bad signage. It appeared to be the only business operating there. The restaurant looks like your typical Chinese restaurant from the inside and outside. What is special about this restaurant is the quality of the food. Everything is prepared fresh and tastes like a lot of time and attention was put into it. We ordered the cumin lamb skewer and crab ragoon for appetizers. This was the best crab ragoon I've ever had. It was sweet and creamy. We ordered several entrées. My favorites were the orange beef and the honey lemon shrimp. I highly recommend Mapo Restaurant. You'll be happy that you took the time to find it.
google avatar

Ishani B.

Yelp
The food here usually tastes good however this time around we had a poor experience. The dishes were not as clean and had food marks and spicy cabbage that was served at the table had a strand of hair. The rest of the meals were way more spicy than usual. Maybe the chef changed.
google avatar

Nick P.

Yelp
This is actually a very decent Chinese restaurant in Naperville. Way less busy than Minghin and more than enough parking. Service was good and attentive. Restaurant is very clean. I've been here a few times. I didn't take any pictures at the time. Any kind of pork belly you get, you'll get a lot of flavor. Please eat it with rice. Basil flavored eggplant cake had some spice to it but not too much to make it unenjoyable. Crispy duck is always a must. They give you some very meaty pieces, the skin gives you that nice crunch. If you're going to come here, at least try to order some other than the typical fried rice, egg rolls, crab rangoon. Makes me cringe.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to go back to when in Dupage county - have yet to find a place that can do better than them for my two favorite dishes. Their Hunan Beef and Mongolian Beef are probably my absolute favorites so only speaking to that part of the menu. Their hot and sour soup is excellent as well! Great environment indoors and great efficient service. Can't ask for more.
google avatar

Joanne C.

Yelp
We got the twice cooked pork, basil eggplant, and the mapo tofu with pork -- asked for the authentic version of all of them! It was delicious and spicy, plenty of food for 3 people! The servers were kind and the food came out speed!
google avatar

Joulie S.

Yelp
I thought the delivery was fairly quick but the portion was a disgrace. I ordered chicken broccoli and I got more broccoli than chicken. Also, the chicken pieces were really small and barely visible. I didn't think it was worth the money. They need to look at portions before sending it out.
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
We visited Mapo for our Valentines Day dinner. Really enjoyed the Mapo Tofu and Chinese Broccoli. The star of the evening, though, was the brisket in beer sauce, loaded with vegetables and a decadent, rich gravy.

Yelp
Casual Chinese dining. Food: we got a variety of things. 1. Stir fry eggplant with pork: this was eggplant stir fried with pork and some garlic sauce. It was a bit too salty and mushy but overall the flavor was pretty good. 2. Dongpo Pork Hock: this was pork hock with chili sauce. It was just all sauce and no pork flavor, as if they just dumped the sauce on top without marinading the pork. The meat was surprisingly dry even though it fell off the bone well. 3. Dry chili three delight: this was salt and pepper shrimp, scallop, squid, and fish fillet. This was my favorite dish, it was crispy and delicious to eat. The bit of spice was just the right amount. Service: very fast service and food came out very fast as well Ambiance: casual dining, very family friendly
google avatar

Shawna M.

Yelp
The food was all very fresh and def made with care. Make sure to ask if the dish has mushrooms if you don't like mushrooms. There was mushrooms in both the garlic chicken and kung pow beef. For the crispy sesame chicken I asked for extra sauce. If I ordered this again I would get it as an appetizer. Very good, we will be back to try something different next time.

Yelp
Finding ourselves in the area quite a bit, we've been eyeing this spot for sometime now and finally made our way to give it a try. Service was good. Restaurant was spotless. Food is pricier than I had expected and with that I found myself nitpicking. Seafood soup was on the saltier side. The stir fried noodles had good flavors yet noodles were too crispy. Really enjoyed the tofu w/ fish filet. Beef tendon w/ veggies and lamb w/ peppers were both good. Anyways portions I could argue that they could be larger for the price. That's all I got on this one. 'Til next time, cheers!

Rocky R.

Yelp
i have been going here for years. delicious food. i have ZERO idea why the over all rating is not higher. this is fabulous Chinese food served in a very clean restaurant. nice people too.

Brian T.

Yelp
This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in the area -- by far. Worth noting: A few of my favorite vegetarian dishes are either not on the menu or are hard to find there. The regular Mapo tofu (without pork) is very very spicy but is the best I have had anywhere. Recently I found out that they will make the dan dan noodle (don don on their menu) with tofu rather than meat. Also quite spicy, but just wonderful. I have not found the "tofu skin with mustard greens" on the menu recently, but one can still get it. I always order it. Unlike the previous two dishes, this one is not at all spicy, but also the healthiest dish I've ever gotten in a Chinese restaurant. Enjoy!

Yelp
Review from 2016. Came here since there are very few Chinese restaurants in Illinois. Someone recommend this place to have authentic Chinese food...Sadly I was quite disappointed in the quality. The restaurant setup with the large round tables and middle spinner table is certainly very Chinese, but that's pretty much it. The food has strange flavors that I have never tried (I am Chinese). Most things were soggy and overly drenched in sauce. Nothing like the Chinese/Taiwanese restaurants on the coasts. Overall: if you are looking for authentic delicious Chinese food, keep looking...

Mona S.

Yelp
It all started with them giving us water without ice I would imagine it was profiling because of our ethnicity. Once we ordered our food we only got one dish for our family meal. 2 people ate and we all just sat there. I asked the lady to come over and she intoned me while another guy was yelling from dear how my meal is coming. This was good 20 minutes before first entree came The guys rudeness and crappy service was it for me. At that point I asked him to just bring my check. I will never go to this place again.

Hannah S.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in the suburbs!! After moving from the city to the suburbs, we spent two years trying to find Chinese (ideally Sichuan) food that was as good as what we got in the city. Our journey was finally over when we found Mapo! It's even better than many places we used to go to in the city. It's very similar to Lao Sze Chuan but better than any Lao's in the suburbs. We drive 45 minutes to eat here regularly. Highly recommend the Twice Cooked Pork and Beef Chow Fun -- it's the best Beef Chow Fun I've ever had!

Yelp
Best Chinese restaurant in Naperville, a hidden gem. Everything is delicious. Good mix of traditional Chinese fare and very authentic dishes. They updated their menu and their dining room in the last few years with great results. Excellent service, food comes out fast. Dining area is clean and well-kept. Easy to park. Reasonable prices. We are lucky that there are many good Chinese places in Naperville, but this is by far our favorite (and we're Asian).
google avatar

Maggie M.

Yelp
The spice is amazingly delicious and spicy. Ordered the mapo tofu with ground pork. Which was very flavorful. After having a bit of the mapo tofu the other dishes didn't seem that spicy. We got the kung pao chicken and the chicken was juicy. Also had the dry chili tofu. It was very crispy outside and inside was the delicate steaming tofu. Would recommend coming here and try at least one of their tofu dish.

Josephine G.

Yelp
Love the beef appetizer #151 on the menu. We love their daily lunch special and the Taiwan beef noodle soup. The waiters are attentive. Will definitely return and it has been our favorite Chinese restaurant in the Naperville area.
google avatar

Sara D.

Yelp
Got mapo tofu w ground pork. Was really good asked for mild and it was still a bit too spicy for me. If you get or have additional white rice it can help with the spice

Yelp
Mapo is hidden under the shadow of Ming Hin which has a better visibility along the main Naperville Blvd and name, but don't miss out on what Mapo has to offer! Lots of tables and seatings inside. Much larger than it seems. Staff and service was swift. Every dish is packed with flavors and lots of colors and spice. Generally, Cantonese cuisine (aka Ming Hin) leans towards natural and lighter food flavors. So If you prefer lots of flavors, this is the place to go.

Luke ..

Yelp
Some of the best Chinese food I've had! The beef stew was melt in your mouth tender, the orange chicken was delicious with the perfect amount of spice, and the shrimp with lemon sauce was to die for. In addition to the great food, the customer service was great, the server was super nice, and the delivery was super quick. The prices were also great for the amount of food, especially nowadays. Overall a great place to eat and I would strongly recommend.

Khosbayar T.

Yelp
Food test okay. I see the servers only serve good to Chinese or white people if you other color person you feel uncomfortable please don't support this business

Yelp
What more can I say than I love this place? I started trying this place when we first moved to Naperville, just before the pandemic. It's nestled in the corner of a strip mall, across of a Wendy's, and could easily go unnoticed given the larger footprint of the competing MingHin Cuisine. It's become my absolute favorite Chinese restaurant in the Naperville area. The food quality is a step above what other businesses in the area offer, and the fair pricing for the portion sizes means I'm getting a great value. Best of all, most of the food is either the best version of an Americanized dish or feels authentic if I'm ordering something more traditional to Chinese cuisine. The dry chili chicken is HOT, HOT, HOT. The crispy honey sesame chicken is a personal favorite. I adore the xiao long bao. There's no going astray really. A quick note about ambiance: the interiors are a step above a standard Chinese restaurant in a strip mall, and the service has always been excellent. In my experience, the staff have always been really nice and taken wonderful care of me and guests. With that said, I have ordered carry out from here considerably more often than dining in. So, the experience with that aspect may vary.

Yelp
I always order 3 dishes in Mapo. If you have Taiwanese tongue, they won't let you down. 810. Two Seasons Bamboos 701. Mapo Tofu 618. Pork Intestine and Pork Blood in Hot Pot 五更腸旺- Highly Recommend
google avatar

Raymond W.

Yelp
We had the spicy beef tendon, mapo tofu with beef, and the salt and pepper pork spare ribs. Each of them were excellent. Spare ribs were crispy yet tender. Tofu was tender and the sauce was flavorful, though slightly salty. The beef tendon was delicate and rich. It's a favorite spot for dining in or out!
google avatar

Coco H.

Yelp
Delicious meals. Love they have soup dumplings. The steam fish was fire! Lol seriously tasty and super spicy.
google avatar

Mindy M.

Yelp
We absolutely love this place!! It is a must stop when we go out to Naperville! Every dish we have ordered has been incredible! We love the Mapo tofu (of course) and Szechuan fried chicken! The service is always attentive as well!
google avatar

Bonnie B.

Yelp
Ive dined at Mapo multiple times as I work right around the corner. Each time I've ordered the beef soup, the meat has been less and less. This last time, I had to scrounge or two bits of meat as the rest was pure fat, and this item is $14!!!!. The broth and noodles also tasted like soap, and I know it wasn't the cilantro because I absolutely love cilantro in everything. I am concerned that the bowl was not washed properly, or that because it was plastic, the boiling hot broth may have leached out soap and or plastic from the plastic bowl. I had considerable issues with my throat after eating this item at this location last week. Never eating the food here again.

Mk M.

Yelp
Have been visiting this restaurant for over a year and my family loves the food. However, there is no feedback complaint loop, pretty much take it or leave it. The manager Mr PING does not want to share the Owner's information or allow them call you to share your feedback with them on the poor customer service. Apparently the OWNER is only available via WECHAT and NOT willing to talk to anyone, how are such businesses allowed to operate? Numerous unpleasant experiences unable to use credit cards, to haggling for petty chilly oil with regular customers seems to be a norm. Looking for recommendations for other similar cuisines restaurants please.
google avatar

Barb B.

Yelp
Delicious food, comfortable ambience, friendly staff. The Mongolian Lamb was terrific! We enjoyed our entrees - the food was quickly prepared and piping hot! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Kindra Y.

Yelp
Hubby brought home Mapo. I will say it is the most flavorful and spicy we have had in a while. Portions were good and value was reasonable. Just wish could substitute fried rice for the no steamed rice Doran up charge instead of having to purchase a side. Will return to try other items. We got the dry chili chicken and kung pao.chicken with crab Rangoon.

Catherine B.

Yelp
We did carry out---the food was great!!! We will definitely order from them again soon!
google avatar

Yelp
I first came to Mapo nearly ten years ago and it was solid. In my most recent visit, it's still great and is probably the best Chinese restaurant in the Chicago suburbs. The scallion pancake ($6) rocked it, with a wonderful level of crispiness and chew, creating the perfect mouthfeel. The chive with dry bean curd ($12) is savory and delicious. The mapo tofu can be made vegan ($11) and was simply okay. Honestly, for a restaurant called Mapo, I had higher expectations. That said, the rest of their menu is so good that it doesn't really matter. Lastly, the peapod leaves ($14) were cooked perfectly. The menu here is similar to Lao Sze Chuan in Downers Grove and Chicago, but the atmosphere is different. The service is friendly and prompt. Don't hesitate to come to Mapo.
google avatar

Vanessa C.

Yelp
everything was so delicious!!!!!!! (the pics are super sad bc i was too busy eating and only took these after the meal) mapo beef rolls: 10/10 crispy scallion pancake exterior, flavorful beef, green onions eggplant with shrimp: 10/10 best eggplant i've had seafood dry pot: 10/10 great flavor, good amount of spice mala beef brisket/tendon (夫妻肺片): 10/10 garlic string beans: 10/10 so garlicky and good portions are good and food is delicious!
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
First time to here for dinner so disappointed I only like the appetizer. The entrees I order come out not even hot temperature wise. Schwan with green beans was very bad the beans was not fresh. The sizzling beef dish is not sizzling and so bad. I won't go back again. Entree is pretty pricey.

Shelley H.

Yelp
One of my favorite Chinese restaurants in the Naperville and surrounding area. The lettuce wraps are to die for! Take out is prepared quickly and arrives fast. Located right around the corner from H-Mart and Costco. Good location with convenient parking!
google avatar

Ron ..

Yelp
The insides and the ambiance is nice, but the food was nothing to remember about. Couple that with the server who had AirPods in his ears, there was some confusion at our table.
google avatar

Carole K. L.

Yelp
Love their Sichuan cai!! Authentic. Just like eating in Chengdu.
google avatar

Christina A.

Yelp
The service here is really bad. They prioritize DoorDash orders and whenever I order pickup they don't even start making it until after I've arrived. I waited 40 minutes later than the promised time today for 3 dishes. I get home and an item is missing and one of the noodle dishes is missing all the ingredients?! No apology for the late order. No apology for the food that didn't even have any ingredients. It was literally just noodles. So bizzare. I call, and the woman doesn't apologize and said I have to call beyondmenu for a refund because she's too busy. Never coming back here and giving them my business.
google avatar

Florence G.

Yelp
If you like deep punchy flavors this place is for you! We were invited here to celebrate with friends and dishes after dishes came on to the table. We were so full by half way but each dish that came after after "being full" made us realize that we have more room as the next dish called out to us and we simply couldn't resist!! The food here are truly spectacular! The flavors are Mainland Chinese and most dishes here uses Shichuan pepper and oily spices, so expect moderate kicks. Therefore, this is not a place for the weak tongue, stomach and on a diet people. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Great food! When you are surrounded by dozens of Chinese folks, it bodes well. I visited here with my Chinese family for lunch on New Year's Day, and my friend Kathy did the ordering for our group (11 people in total). We had a great spread of food that included Mongolian beef, country or home style or farmhouse (we can't recall which) beef, moo shoo pork, hot and sour soup, beef rolls, pig intestine, fish and squid and green beans and fried chicken.... I didn't have the pig, pork or fish, but everything else was delicious and those that did have the others--including the intestine--said it was delicious. I know we'll be back because this is the post-holiday (Black Friday and New Year's Day) lunch favorite. My Chinese "in-laws" like the place too; she says that this is the place she goes that reminds her of the food she gets in China. I don't get out to Naperville a lot, but I would definitely visit here again if I'm in the western suburbs.
