Best New Bars Around Boston, According to Eater Editors | Eater Boston

"The Seaport’s cocktail scene just got a big ol’ boost in the form of Marcelino’s, a Providence-based bar that was ready for a larger stage in the form of a Boston expansion. Co-owners Marcelino Ali and Basel Badawi have more space to play at this Seaport spot, which is housed in the former waterfront location of the Daily Catch. Bar director Refaat Ghostine (an alum of Central Station, an award-winning Beirut bar) set up a cocktail lab in the back to put time-intensive prep into drinks like the herbaceous Oregano / Tomato with gin, white vermouth, verjus, oregano, tomato cordial, and a salted white balsamic, and the sweet-savory Watermelon / Rhubarb topped with a salty feta cheese foam." - Erika Adams

An incredible addition to Seaport!! Marcelino's opened last year, and we could not wait to dine there. I should've written the review last year when we went for New Year's, but never too late. That was an experience with a Venetian-themed party. We toasted the NY with champagne and beautiful masks provided by Marcelino's. Exceptional experience!!! The minute you step into the reception area, get ready to experience elegance, vintage luxury, and delectable tastings. Atmosphere: The ambiance of this restaurant is luxurious with a mix of old and modern touches. The bar is just stunning. They have opened the patio now for the summer with an elegant dining experience with a beautiful view of the Harbor and the Boston skyline. We are going to make the most of it this summer by dining here as much as we can. Music is Fri/Sat. The DJ is just phenomenal. Very energetic atmosphere. Drinks: Whosoever came up with the drink menu, IT'S AMAZING!!! Unlike any other restaurant, their drinks are not watered down. One can taste and smell the beautiful aromas of the infused spices/fruits/ingredients. The drink menu has been carefully selected with very unique flavors and presentation. I am just blown away every time we are there. They've excellent mocktails as well. Food: It is so different from any other place around Boston. The presentation is so beautiful, the flavors are umami ...just so delectable and fresh. It is tapas style so that one can taste several dishes. I can go on and on about each dish, but I will leave it for everyone else to experience. Basel and his team have done an amazing job in creating something very different. We have so many steak houses in the area that we needed to experience something that Basel and his team have delivered exceptionally. This restaurant is by far our favorite place to have casual drinks/dinner, or a formal dinner with friends.

I had a fabulous night at Marcelino’s with one of my best girlfriends. The food was phenomenal, I highly recommend the lambchops and bone marrow + tartare— absolutely delicious! I would personally come back to Marcelino’s specifically for our server Gabby. She was so kind, so warm, and really helped make our girls night one to remember! This spot is a true gem!

Google
Great atmosphere and service! Marcelino’s is a fun spot with high energy — they often have a DJ or music playing, which makes it perfect for a night out with friends. The food wasn’t the highlight for me, but it was good enough for appetizers and drinks. Definitely a cool place to hang out and enjoy the vibe! The drinks are amazing, pornstar martini is one of my favorite drinks and they definitely nailed it there!! And the views from the outside patio are incredible!

Went after work with a friend for some food and a cocktail. I loved the strawberry drink- very refreshing and balanced. The lamb chops were cooked perfectly at medium rare and the sauce that was on top was amazing. Would definitely come back to try their other cocktails! Loved the vibe and the service was attentive and informative.

Google
Such a vibe! This place has it all — amazing waterfront views, super creative drinks, and a DJ that keeps the night alive. The staff is so friendly and welcoming, always going out of their way to make your night feel special. The food is a perfect mix of Levant and Mediterranean flavors — fresh, and flavorful. Marcelino’s has been my go to spot in Boston. Highly recommend!!

Google
After all of the Instagram buzz about this place, I had to come in and take a look for myself! I have to say that the drinks were clearly well curated and one-of-a-kind. And the dishes were also quite impeccable. The food far exceeded my expectation. Everything tasted amazing and it was just the right amount of food. And considering the amount of food and drinks, I have to say the prices seemed reasonable. When we wanted to switch over to the bar, the staff was very understanding. Would definitely love to come back! This restaurant has a swanky, fun vibe. Perfect place to share a meal or drink with a friend after work! Also great for a date spot!

Featuring a beautiful view of the water, Marcelino's is the perfect spot for celebrating a special occasion or just a glorious summer day. The cocktails are carefully and masterfully crafted. The best I've had yet! Highly recommend the Palo Santo Honey and the Strawberry Basil. I plan to return and try all! Our waiter was amazing! He took time to explain the menu, make recommendations, and make sure we have the best experience. While we were there, the place was pretty packed. There was also a DJ, which made the place even livelier. Be sure to make a reservation.

Google
Really cute new spot that's located in the courthouse in Seaport. The place is super trendy with multiple smaller rooms and a big open bar area. The entrance is really bright and has a cool lighted mirror wall. The food is Mediterranean tapas, we didn't eat anything, but it looked delicious. We came here for the drinks which were fantastic. I had the baklava drink which was basically a Manhattan but had baklava flavors in it which was really good. My wife had the watermelon rhubarb which had a feta cheese foam on top which was DELICIOUS. we also had the oregano and quince which were equally well balanced and great tasting. Our server Katy was also really sweet and did a great job of explaining the drinks and making us feel welcome.

Yelp
We had an amazing evening at Marcelino's! I had accidentally made our reservation for the Rhode Island location even though we live in Boston and the manager who greeted us couldn't have been more kind and gracious about it - he was able to seat us in Boston and take care of communication with the Rhode Island location. The decor and atmosphere was exactly what we were in the mood for- beautiful and lounge like. All the food we had was delicious and each dish had a unique flavor or ingredient that made everything feel creative. Can't recommend enough!

Yelp
I'll start this by saying: Marcelino's is a tough one to review. It's a beautiful space with quality drinks and food in a prime location, but it's real expensive, and takes itself pretty seriously. We stopped by for dinner on a Saturday night. There's a bouncer at the front door and while there was no line at 7pm when we arrived, by the time we left there was a substantial line (velvet ropes and all) of people dressed to the nines waiting to get it. The restaurant is really luxurious and vibey but super small - though I think the back room has a DJ that was drawing this crowd in. At its core, Marcelino's is a cocktail bar. The drink menu is all designed around the flavor profiles and ingredients. Some of our favorites were the classic dirty martini, Oregano/Tomato, and Basil. There were some great flavors and everything was perfectly balanced, but at $20-$30 per cocktail, you'd expect nothing less. There's also a full menu of mediterranean small plates (at full entree prices...). Everything we tried was delicious, but with a group of 4, it was really hard to order enough to fill everyone up without spending a fortune. Our waitress was really helpful and the service all around was great, I just probably wouldn't visit for a meal again. It's more of a drinks and a light snack spot for a special occasion in my opinion. Restaurants like this have been popping up more and more to fill a hole in the nightlife scene in Boston (such a casual city), but you're really paying for the decor, location, and IG photos, rather than the actual meal. Still, you have to respect the quality food and cocktails, just make sure you know what you're getting yourself into :)

Yelp
We've been wanting to try this place for a month or so and finally made it here. It's a nice cocktail bar with really unique flavors. Very pricey though (~$20/cocktail) and some places I think it's worth it but I wasn't blown away by these. Very good but not worth that price. The food was good but it's small plates so it's not really designed for dinner (even though reservations between 4-9 have to be dinner). It was a nice vibe but very small. Overall, I thought it was good but I'm not sure I'll be dying to go back.

Yelp
Relaxing ambiance with little be music and relaxing vibes . Service was prompt and friendly . Drinks were fantastic .

Yelp
Lamb chops were amazing! I'd come back to eat this. It smelled incredible walking in. The view is beautiful from the high tops by the railing. I felt like sitting inside or on the regular tables on the patio had an obstructed view. Service was super slow and inattentive on a Tuesday evening. I can't imagine what this would be like on a busier day. I agree the pricing is high. I had a mid cocktail for over $23 with the taxes included. At this price point, I expect more than a pretty drink. 1 drink and one "larger" item without a side ran me $75. I was on a work trip, so that helped.

Yelp
Usually new places are overhyped but this place was solid! Good vibes and music Service vis bartenders was great and super helpful Eggplant miso 5/5 Lamb chop 5/5 Chicken schnitzel 4/5 Cocktails were creative but not amazing for $22+...should be priced around $15 max

Sarah R.

Yelp
Worst place ever. Went for a birthday, service was okay but food and drinks were overpriced. No alcohol in the drinks! We sat on foot stools, so uncomfortable. Vibes were good that's about it!

Yelp
The location and the vibe of this place are great! Right by the water, dark and moody. They're opening up a gorgeous patio soon too-- definitely going to need to go! I had their porn star martini (amazing), one of their dips (can't remember which.. not memorable, very small), and the cauliflower (delicious). Overall, I'd go back for the cocktails and the vibe, but not blown away by the food. It was all good, just nothing to write home about!

Yelp
I visited on a bustling Saturday night at prime time-- around 9:45pm with a group of 5. We were asked if we had a reservation at the front entrance (we didn't) and they had to check to see if they could let us in. We only waited a few seconds for them to check and were let in. It was very crowded and we had to stand in the corner in the back, but all the workers were very nice! A worker asked us if we wanted to put our coats in the back on a chair and servers checked in on us frequently. Drinks were super fancy and delicious! I'd highly recommend checking this place out but recommend making a reservation beforehand.

Yelp
I had a wonderful time here. It was completely packed when I arrived, but managed to snag two seats at the bar. I would highly encourage people to get a reservation before arriving. Bartender and staff were friendly, warm and walked us through the menu. The cocktails were outstanding, well-balanced and creative. They reminded me a lot of the (now closed) Good Company Cocktail Bar - whereas the closer resemble a particular dish (like the Baklava Cocktail). The food was good. 4/5 for me. The tartare was is one of the better tartare's in Boston and was particularly impressive. That said, as a restaurant - I don't think is worth going out of your way for. But as a bar with snacks, this hits the spot. The restaurant is beautifully decorated which helps. I'm not going to ding any stars for this - but I do think the place has a bit of an identity crisis. Yes, the menu is cohesive and work beautifully with the drinks. But I was confused about why they hired a DJ? The place is loud enough, it's completely seated, it's too small to be a club and there's certainly no room to dance. That whole aspect could've been replaced with a Spotify Playlist, and been 10-15% quieter. Funny thing is that the DJ was pretty good, just unnecessary. I have a feeling this was a "Friday night" thing, so I may most recommend here on a weekday. All this aside, in a Seaport full of *meh* bars and restaurants - Marcelino's is a welcomed addition. There's still some kinks to work out - which is fine, I don't think they've had a grand opening yet - so I'm excited to see what'll be like in 6 months. Looking forward to coming back.

Yelp
I had an incredible time here! I went here for my birthday and they made it an amazing experience! The ambience was chic and the service was so lovely. I got the strawberry cocktail- it was unique, delicious, and pretty! For food we got the ciabatta (which came with pita) and hummus. The hummus was amazing!! At the end they even included mini strawberry drinks and a birthday candle! It made my night. Incredible spot for a special occasion

Yelp
The low rating is due to rude and unprofessional handling of our party by the floor manager (Ian?) which spoiled the entire experience. Otherwise - this place has beautiful views, limited but fairly tasty food. Hope the restaurant management adds "hospitality" to the menu. It was my birthday celebration and I booked a table for DINNER for 6 a week in advance. We get there and are seated in a round couch with a low table in a middle, of about 24in in diameter, cute to put a drink on but certainly not for having any food. I approach the manager at the front desk, explaining that we'd like to have dinner and asking for a table that would accommodate that. We discuss an option of putting together 2 tables of 4 once they free up - great! We proceed to order drinks waiting for our table. We see multiple tables of 4 free up right in front of us and ask one of the hosts if some of them are for us and they confirm so. Time goes by, nothing is happening. I go up to the manager for an update and he says that he's not able to give us any of those tables due to other reservations and offers us a high table on the back of the terrace. We're not happy but agree to it and move because we want to be able to eat, while the regular tables we want remain unoccupied right in front us. Time goes by, tables remain empty. We get wrong drinks served to us 3 times - fine, we take it in stride. Service is not great, slow - but ok we go with it. The tables right in front remain unoccupied 90min after the manager said he would move us there, and I approach him again - he says he has reservations. Ok.... Time goes by..... Tables remain unoccupied. I approach the manager again as many tables are free and ask him for his business card, as being an executive myself I think he's not handling it well and I would provide feedback. He comes back with a generic business card of the restaurant. I say - I asked for YOUR business card, and these are the words that come out of his mouth: "If you're going to cause any more problems I will have you checked out of the restaurant and this will be it. My name is Ian Lynch if you'd like know". Whoa..... We paid our $700 bill for a few drinks and appetizers and took the rest of the evening to Ocean Prime. There are other places along the same water front that are a lot more friendly and accommodating. Woods Hill, SAVR - both awesome - great food, amazing views, professional staff. Staff can really make or break your experience - that's why this industry is called "hospitality".

Yelp
Drinks , service and food was amazing ! Very loungey ambience with gorgeous decor . Staff was super friendly . Food portions are small . It's good to have a nibble with your drink. Will definitely come back when the outside area opens in June .

Yelp
Everything was awesome the waitress and staff were great and the food/drinks/vibe makes this place worth coming back.

Yelp
Went here for dinner with friends and it was amazing. Everything we ordered tasted so good and came out fresh. High quality ingredients and great flavors. We preferred family style so we tried a little bit of everything. The service was great and I loved the atmosphere. They also had so many cool cocktails on their menu to choose from. Looking forward to coming back here.

Yelp
Great spot on the water. Fantastic small plates. The lamb chops were amazing. Mediterranean influenced food was fresh and bursting with flavor. Server was super knowledgeable and attentive. Arrived at 5 on a Thursday and was quiet, but the buzz picked up fast by 6. The drinks were creative and made with ingredients made there, but limited beer choice.

Yelp
I took my friend here for his Birthday, and it didn't disappoint. The food, waitstaff, and overall vibe was great. I would highly recommend.

Yelp
This place is such a hidden gem in Seaport! The drinks are amazing! Well crafted, flavorful and just the right balance. If you like a fresh light drink I'd recommend Parsley or Basil. If you want something smooth and light get the Palo Honey. Porn Star was Smokey and just right. I was not a fan of the watermelon rhubarb it has a feta cheese topping that once you get past it's fine but just wasn't for me. The place is fun and chic, prefect for a night out without feeling overly crowded. Since it's still now it hasn't been overrun yet making it a great spot to enjoy an intimate vibe. Definitely a must visit before the secret gets out!
google avatar

Yelp
Marcelino's is a perfect new addition to Seaport. The interior is absolutely stunning, staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is super sexy! The cocktails are well crafted and the bites were delicious. Rating Marcelino's 4 stars because they were out of the lamb chops and are charging $28 for 2 lamb skewers, which is ridiculous. Overall, beautiful restaurant.
google avatar

Abby H.

Yelp
Came here late on a Sunday night after dinner for drinks. Immediately, when I walk in, a lady tells me that I have to try one of the cocktails. It was this half coffee half citrus drink - definitely something I haven't had before, and I ordered another after I finished it. They had a lot of cocktail options, and I'd want to come back again and try more. Inside is beautiful, and you can watch the harbor from inside.
google avatar

Victoria O.

Yelp
Ambiance is 5/5. Food is 3/5. It reminds me of New York so I like it. Also it stays open fairly late. A dislike of mine is that the bathroom is outside of the restaurant and it's winter ( it's freezing).
google avatar

Albert K.

Yelp
Great new addition to Boston's speakeasy-esque cocktail lounge! Bit tucked away from hustle and bustle of Seaport but a welcomed oasis if you are looking for creative cocktails and small bites. Came here for their soft opening with friends for drinks. The drinks definitely very creative and tasty. The service was also attentive without being intrusive. Overall, a very high class vibe with great drinks for pre dinner or for a night cap.

Gracie B.

Yelp
Stunning views and good drinks. We got here right when they opened and were seated immediately on the patio.
google avatar

Tien N.

Yelp
Love the ambiance, it give very Miami vibes. The server and the host we very nice and attentive. The food and drinks were very good. Down side is the small table could barely fit the tapas and drinks . The dishes were pretty pricy for Tapas.

Taryn J.

Yelp
This place had incredible PR across socials, so I decided to check it out. Pros: The cocktails were good, small but well done. The lamb skewers were yummy and tender, and the hummus with pita was also delicious. We sat at the bar and the ambiance was nice; it reminded me of a Miami speakeasy. Cons: it took 15 minutes for us to be greeted (we were at the bar and neither bartender acknowledged us). The cauliflower was very undercooked, which was unfortunate because the sauce had good flavor. With a little refinement I think this place would thrive.
google avatar

Maroun N.

Yelp
Food was excellent and the cocktails delicious. Service was very good. The atmosphere was warm and comfortable - and could be described as romantic if you were so inclined.

Farah H.

Yelp
Food is good. Nice ambience! Service was great. It's a lovely restaurant facing the harbor

Dominic L.

Yelp
Beautiful cocktail bar with a view of Boston Harbour. 3 stars for ambiance and comfortable seating. -2 stars for the menu. Need to add appetizers and please revise the wine list. I get that it is a cocktail focused bar but this was the strangest wine list I've ever seen.

Amanda D.

Yelp
Great drinks! The ambiance was very speakeasy vibes. And the service was good. We will be back!

Melnea C.

Yelp
This is my new favorite place! I cannot say enough about this amazing establishment! Food, drinks, and decor, they have it all! It's a vibe you have to experience! The Seaport waterfront location is just a fraction of what Marcelino's has to offer! The manager, Ean, was such a huge help with my proposal, as it was raining but he quickly provided a covered space for my special moment. Mind you, he did not have to help us! What a memorable experience! If you're in the Seaport area, this is a must-try! You'll quickly understand my rave review!
google avatar

Sandy K.

Yelp
I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt but both times the food was disappointing. From the hummus, the roasted cauliflower, the branzino and the pistachio dessert that was extremely dry and flavorless. The only Pinot noir option they had was horrible. The place is extremely small and be prepared to pay $42 for parking.

Panayota G.

Yelp
Marcelino's is undeniably a beautiful lounge in a great spot. It has good vibe and ambiance. Our server was very kind and helpful. That said, the place is highly overrated. First of all, food portions are minimalist (yes, I understand that they are small plate to share, but this should also be reflected on the price!). Not only is the food pricey, the quality is average. Let's admit: this is not a restaurant, it is a lounge where food is only complementary to the cocktails-something to pick on. Cocktails are very good but so low in alcohol. Finally, what really bothered me was the restaurant's policy to try to get you out the door after just one hour. I had just gotten another cocktail and food in our plates when we were asked if we need anything else (dessert). Sadly, we won't be returning.

Steven J.

Yelp
My friend and I wanted to see what all the hype has been about for the last few months, so we decided to go and have a drink and get a feel for the place. Well, we walked in and attempted to head to the bar. Yes, we attempted because a host or manager approached us and asked if he could help us. I informed him we were heading to the bar to have a drink. He stated we need a reservation. I asked him to have a drink at the bar. He said yes, but I had to ask him again. He walked away as if you didn't understand me the first time; there was no need to repeat myself. So I asked a young lady who was a host if we could just have a drink at the bar. She also stated that we needed a reservation, but she could take my information and would let us know when an opening became available. I asked how long the wait was to just have a drink at the bar. She stated 2 hours. Since we were already going to enjoy another lounge at the seaport that had no reservations for the bar, we left. I am a restaurant frequent flyer, and from all the 5-star places I visit, I have never heard of this nonsense. What I do know from my experience is that this will come to an end. You are not in NYC; this is Boston. So, to management, enjoy what you have. See you in a year or less when you let anyone in to keep the business open. If you don't think this is true, do your homework. It has not gone well for all who have tried this in Boston. I'll be back in a year or less to remind you how it worked out for you.

kait b.

Yelp
Incredible ambiance. The cocktails were phenomenal. Our server was so kind and fast. Have not tried the food here yet. Will definitely be going back!

Tom W.

Yelp
Horrible experience...... chicken wasn't cooked.... Place is beautiful inside..... but food an cocktails were bad...... never would go back

Amica M.

Yelp
Wanted to check out this new addition to the Seaport. I experienced a lack of a hospitality heart. And the manager/host was hostile.

Ella S.

Yelp
An amazing pornstar martini. Dj was keeping the guests grooving. Katy P recommended amazing drinks. Overall a great experience and would recommend if you're in Seaport.

Bruce W.

Yelp
One and done... drinks were OK, food average (don't order the artichokes) , ambiance is weird especially in the small dining area to the right of the front door), seating at the tables is uncomfortable. Decent vibe but it just doesn't live up to all of the hype. Why are there always three staff members at the host stand that don't know how to greet customers? ...seems to be an ongoing theme at Boston restaurants.

Carolyn K.

Yelp
This is exactly what Boston needs, especially in the Seaport. The ambiance is quaint, the cocktails are elevated to a level that I have not seen before in Boston. The food is thoughtful and bartender Daniel is excellent (and fun to watch making his drinks!). I have been back 2x in one week and plan to return for Valentine's Day celebrations. Thank you, Marcelino's!
