The Best Dog-Friendly Bars and Patios in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"After a long walk along the Old Port, head to Marché des Éclusiers. The indoor-outdoor market boasts local produce and artisanal fare, while the upstairs terrasse acts as an open air refuge from it all for boat watching from above. Dogs are welcome throughout the market as well as at the bar."

The service was INCREDIBLE! Waiters were exceptional and the wine was to die for. Location was so beautiful and the vibes were awesome. Would 100% come back anytime! Can’t recommend enough!

Google
Cette terrasse est simplement magnifique ! Perfect destination for mocktails or drinks on a summer night overlooking the canal. Outdoor seating. Our gracious server, Gaëlle, made us feel like guests at home. A great Montreal destination! I highly recommend the Sbagliato pamplemousse, a superb cousin of the classic Negroni! 🧡

Google
I have no idea why this place has such a low rating - we had an amazing lunch here just recently! Service was excellent, food tasted wonderful and came out fast, the atmosphere was awesome on a sunny summer day (we sat outside), and we were allowed to bring our dog to the restaurant, which was very nice!! Prices were actually quite reasonable (coming from someone from the US), and we got a whole bunch of different things from their new menu. A great non-alcoholic cocktail, salmon tartare, chorizo with chimichurri, burrata caprese salad with strawberries, truffle fries, fresh focaccia bread, and shrimp ceviche - everything was super good! All the food tasted fresh, and our favorites were the chorizo and the burrata caprese salad. Honestly, this seems like one of the places you can get whatever you want and still be very happy with your meal. It is a tapas-style restaurant, so feel free to order a few different things and try something unique out! You’ll enjoy it!

Google
Extremely disappointing. We went for cocktails, which were decent, but had ordered food since we were hungry. Big mistake. The “focaccia” was a disgrace. They should call it what it is, which is a piece of pita bread (photo included). The ceviche was disgusting and tasteless and can’t even be considered ceviche. The burrata dish was a disappointment. Avoid getting any food. Tasteless. Overpriced. Disappointing. You’re paying for the atmosphere and that’s it. Save yourself a trip and go somewhere else. The server even told us that we shouldn’t expect anything more. You’re pretty much paying for the vibe of being in the old port.

Google
Service and food here were extremely sub-par for Montreal and lesser than any other restaurant we visited during our 6 day stay. They must be banking on location, which is very nice. We were starving and ordered a burrata pizza from a server who seemed less than interested in bothering to come by. She mentioned a few things not available, took our order and on she went (barely to return again, and never to refill water). The pizza came out with melted bits of cheese all over it, which we instantly questioned since burrata typically comes in a giant ball, but ate it since we were starving. When we asked about it, we were told it was mozzarella because they “prioritize” the burrata for their salad. Good to know 30 min ago!! Then the bill came with $1 more than menu price for the pizza that didn’t even have the right cheese 😩 The server was super cranky and unapologetic. I can say the passion fruit mojito pitcher was very tasty, not too sweet but quite pricey. Enjoyed the location, but food and service experience 🤮

Google
Great location, very slow service, terrible gelato (tasted like it had melted and been re-frozen, served in paper cups and disposable spoon). Food looked okay but while we were waiting (a long time) to order our ice cream, we saw birds eating off the counter of the outdoor kitchen. Yuck.

Came for the spritz and summer sun… stayed for the surprise mariachi-fueled consulting firm party. Only in Montreal can happy hour turn into a telenovela! 💃🍹🎺😬

Amazing spot to have a drink in summer! Beautiful setting, great selection of drinks

Yelp
Pretty place by the water in old port to gather for drinks and supper. Drinks were a bit expensive and the beef tartare was good but not enough crackers.

Yelp
Went there last week after a crazy jet boat ride at the old port. We were all together 4 people, and they accommodated us rather quickly. It has a nice vibe, you are outdoors surrounded with plants and the old port. To be honest this is a place to go for drinks rather than a meal. It has very limited selection of meals mostly salads. Do not go there if you are looking forward to a big meal. I had the Caesar broccoli which was very good. My friends had oysters which they loved and cucumber salad and tomato salad. We were all happy with our choices but like I said we wanted a big meal which this place does not offer. More of a chill ambiance for drinks and snacks. The only I gave it 4 stars was lack of selection and our waiter was quick to remove our food even when we were nit finished. My friend had to tell him that he is still eating and waiter put back his plate. All in all a good experience.

Yelp
So happy that the terraces are open. My first place to visit is at Marché des Éclusiers in old Montreal. The spot is in the heart of the the port. From the entrance to the inside, everything is visible from bar to kitchen, and the setup is absolutely stunning. The service is exceptional and super quick. They have a great list of cocktails but very limited food menu. I took a raspberry mojito with a green salad. The cocktail was very refreshing but my salad was very tiny like a side dish. The lettuces were huge, I felt I was cutting a steak because I was though the layers of each leaf because they were attached. I might have forgotten how the prices can be steep during this pandemic . For my drink and a tiny salad to cost me almost 50$ seems outrageous.

Yelp
Absolute worst restaurant I have ever been to. They were out of many items on the menu, they gave us a broken pitcher with our beverage- I asked to have it replaced, and they brought back another broken pitcher. I asked why they didn't give us a pitcher that wasn't broken/leaking, and the waiter barked "just keep it! Just keep it!" Tremendously rude, mediocre food and horrendous service. Would not recommend for anyone and I'm astounded that it's even in business. Ruined the last night of my family's vacation. Never again- save yourself the trouble and go elsewhere.

Yelp
I never knew of this secret hideaway terrace in Old Montreal. I came across it walking by from Bota Bota. It is beautiful! With spacious seating, tables, and even hammock styled swings along with a view of the old Port lock (we get what we can take in Montreal) - this concrete jungle is a space that hosts different chefs to co-host in the summer. I was aware of this concept from Chef J Anthony's (local Legend and Seasoned Dreams owner)feed on social media, who was there as one of the pop up chefs this summer. I opted for a quick meal because we were seated at the bad and there wasps every where but the food did not disappoint. Service was a bit lacking and could have been better, since there were so many people - we had to call the bartender every time we wanted to order. Now moving on to the food/drinks : cocktails started at 11$, I had a glass of rosé accompanied with Chef Anthony's lovely creations: jerk chicken Mac n cheese (very cheesey!), guava rum glazed chicken wings (4 pieces for 17$ but they were huge), as a main -pineapple bowl (13$) with jerk chicken (9$). The dish comprised of a bean rice with Coleslaw inside of of a pineapple! Meats and seafood are extra (which I found a bit steep in price but can't argue with large portion- I was full!). I think this is a spot that often gets overlooked in publicity as more of a market than hangout spot for drinks. Looking forward to what next summer brings.

Yelp
Their pizza is the worst... for 22$, you get naan bread with tomato sauce straight out of a can... and thats it, literally

Yelp
We stopped by on a Friday afternoon without a reservation and almost walked away because the people in front of us were told there were no seats available for walk-ins. They were being rude to the hostess to say the least. We asked the hostess what the wait was after they walked away and she got us a seat at the bar in less than 5 mins. Sam the bartender was super sweet and made sure we non-french speakers were taken care of. The food we ordered was fine. It was difficult getting a vegetarian special order for my wife. She had to send her meal back the first time. The cocktails that Sam made us were delicious and refreshing. We enjoyed sitting at the bar and chatting with other tourists.

Yelp
Walk the canal and chill out at the open air market. While on vacation in Montreal we hit the Old Port area and walked over here to relax with a drink by the water. Seems like they are developing the area to be a happening spot with great views and local purveyors offering local eats and drinks. Great spot that they have done a nice job with, and a cool concept. A few bars, BBQ joint, baked goods, coffee, and more can be found here now. Take a seat by the water with some libations and a bite to eat from one of the food stands, kick back, and take it all in. Enjoy life.

Yelp
What a hidden gem! We were looking for a nice cozy outdoor area to have lunch. We had a little pup and most places near Norte dame won't take dogs. Luckily found Marche des Eclusiers, not only the place was so beautiful and food was good but most importantly they are pet friendly. Pulled pork - excellent! Octopus salad - delicious (but quite spicy)

Yelp
After having a few good experiences here in the past, I can say that something has changed but for the worst. Probably new management or owners in any case it doesn't justify for a bad experience. I convinced my colleague to go and eat there for lunch. The service was extremely lousy and very slow, they messed up my order (didn't rectify)and the quality and has gone down significantly. They're not big on condiments and dressing burgers. Frankly, many fast foods would beat the food and service and you don't have to spend 21$ on a burger. I put two stars to give some credit for the location and charm of the place. Tips for management to improve on: *Invest in better training in your employees so they are more customer focused. They should bring menus right away when it's lunch time and be a quicker on their toes. There's no reason they should be so slow when there are only five tables to serve and 4-5 employees working. *Clients should not have to ask for cutlery when they receive their meal and wait for 10 minutes and then having to go and get cutlery themselves. *Your high prices should reflect your menu and service. Either lower your prices or provide the basics that come with a burger.

Yelp
I was invited to the official press opening day by Yelp and I am extreamly greatful for that, since it might have taken me longer to discover this unique location. Great setup just by the river, one cool complex of a culinary guilt pleasure. You have here everything from an open bar, amazing cocktail place, fresh food, vegtables , pastery shops , coffee place and even a wine bar upstairs. I tasted many things and every thing was of the highest quality. Loved the location, the setup, the varity, the atmosphere and most importent the cool Yelp people that I met there that really made it into an awasome expirience. It is a little far from other places in the old port bit come with a few good friends and I promise you great memories

Yelp
We stubbled upon this charming place after spending the morning exploring Montreal. The laid back atmosphere and casual charm made this a perfect oasis after a long day of checking out this beautiful city. Neither of us speak fluent French, just a bit of Sesame Street French and our adorable server made sure we felt welcome here. Thank you. The food menu is small but definitely on point. The drink menu has a lovely selection and offers something for everyone. The weather was warm, the drinks were cold, the food...delicious. A bacon cheeseburger for hubby and a toasted bagel with smoked salmon and a soft boiled egg nestled in the middle for me. Uncomplicated and cooked with care, no complaints here. A lovely place to spend a leisurely Sunday.

Yelp
The environment and view is very good for the summer. The margarita and the mimosas were good too. Never order the sandwich with pickles , it's very bad !

Yelp
I felt the need to put this review. Hopefully it would lead to some changes because it was a Nice location but The service was not even decent. The staff seemed unengaged. They didn't even clean our table before we sit down. The presentation was horrible. Straws look dirty. Very different than what we saw in pictures online. The toilet didn't even have the toilet paper! Especially during this COVID time I expected much more and this place didn't even meet bare minimum standards in terms of hygiene.

Sasha Z.

Yelp
Very disappointed about this place. Old port is a terrific location but stuff at this restaurant re rude, treat ppl with no respect plus closing business whatever they want to leave home. Question, if on Google you re closing at 11pm, why did you close your restaurant at 9pm and didn't allowed ppl sit and have a drink. This tiny boy who called him self manager definitely has to leave restaurant business since he doesn't know how to run this business

Yelp
A few hours before the reservation, I wanted to change our arrival time. The restaurant did not reply to my calls when I tried to inform them. The mailbox was full and we could leave no message. When we arrived with a 30 minute delay. We were greeted with reproach and judgement by the staff who rudely informed us that they had given our seats away. When I told them that I had tried to call numerous times with no answer I was told : " well I was too busy to answer ! ". When I asked the doorman to repeat what I had said to hostess since she didn't even get up to speak to us and was too far to hear he told me : " you can repeat it yourself ". There were no apologies and no smiles. It felt like we were ruining their mood. This was for a birthday and it was indicated in the electronic reservation. Greeting says a lot about how a place perceives clientele and the importance of patronage. If they're too busy to be polite and accommodating or even to answer the phone they can enjoy other people's money. We had a great time somewhere else where we spent money and time and made great memories. But we got lucky and it was no thanks to this place. Didn't get to taste the food or drinks. Ambiance and decor seemed nice. Too bad.

Yelp
This is the perfect place to spend a summer evening. The Marché des Éclusiers is located just outside the main area of the Old Port and is right by the water. There are a few different food and drink vendors and there is tons of outdoor seating so you can sit around on a nice day and capitalize on the weather to take in the views of the canal. My only complaint is that it is really pricey. I paid $11 for a beer before tip which is a little excessive in my opinion. It still is a solid spot though to hit up while you are in the Old Port.
google avatar

Clea C.

Yelp
Beautiful location! I've enjoyed this spot when it was a restaurant/bar. And now I'm glad to see it coming back to life as a farmers market! The genius mind behind this project is a local favorite Fabergé. They brought together many Montreal restaurants and vendors such as Diablos. So far the list of vendors include: Diablos BBQ Smokehouse, Fabergé, Omnivore Épicerie-Traiteur, La Petite Boulangerie, Nectar & Co. bar à jus, Eileen's (seafood), and Café Volcanic Organic. It's truly a nice relaxing location for a break when strolling around old port, or to spend a night drinking and eating fresh local food.
google avatar

Eve C.

Yelp
Love love love the concept of this open air and organic market on the canal! You can find fresh juice, barbecue fares, coffee and teas, everything you need to spend a lovely afternoon... I have not tried the food at the bar since they did not have vegetarian options. Volcanic organic coffee bar offers great options for coffee from a single source in Guatemala "farm to cup" style. Boucherie Lawrence and omnivore also have a stand. I'm exited to see this really cool spot grow and offer more unique and organic dishes! Will definitely be back on a regular basis. The setting on the canal is idyllic...come the evening and it's a really chill place to have a drink with your friends. That's all you need to know! (For now)

Yelp
Excellent place to chill during late spring summer and fall time. It's like a market but more lively thanks to all the small bars and shops. There is an amazing chilling terrace with colourful chairs and everyone is really nice and take the time to explain you their products and the collective idea. A bit far away from the main tourists area you feel like privileged to sit here and cool down with a nice iced coffee. Great vibes and peaceful energy. I definitely can say it's one of my favourite chilling places
google avatar

Pat M.

Yelp
Another beautiful terrasse to chill with friends and have some good fast food. Looks like a fair with cozy people. You can eat and drink but not very cheap.

Carlos D.

Yelp
Great place to relax breathe in atmosphere, seems like I'm at a southern beach resort, the food is very tasty , cocktails are fresh and delightful service is great and friendly

Yelp
On a beautiful sunny day, walking along the water, the Marché des éclusiers seemed the perfect place to stop & have a drink. We were seated immediately and after a quick look at the menu, I asked the waitress was the lemonade of the day was to which she replied "today, it's just regular lemonade: lemons, simple syrup and ice" - sure, why not? So we ordered: lemonade, a margarita & fries. The margarita arrived first, and we asked the waiter if the lemonade was on the way. He said yes. Then the fries arrived, cold. And then we waited. And waited. And waited. No sign of our waitress, or my lemonade. So my better half walked up to the counter to inquire about our lemonade and was told "two minutes" As we reached the bottom of the bowl of fries, I decided that I was too thirsty (our waters long gone) and I would like to talk to the manager. It's funny how quickly things move once managers are involved. I got my lemonade (sub par and not at all worth the wait) on the house and we never saw our waitress again. Not even as we were looking to pay. Terrible food, terrible service and if it werent for the amazing location, Im certain this place wouldn't survive.

Yelp
Love love love. Love love. Reasons you need to go to there - 1. It's far enough away from the tourists while also being smack dab in the old city. 2. I love the view of the hulking, confusing, beautifully industrial Pointe de moulin. 3. You can have ANYTHING you want. Coffee? Check. Beer? Check. Fancy drinks? Check. How about some baked goods? Don't mind if I do. BBQ? Got you covered. Ice cream, juice bar, wine, etc. All the things that you want. 4. All that stuff? Yeah, it tastes good too. 5. The seating. So. Much. Seating. And usually at least some of it is shady. 6. Right along the canal path. 7. Did I mention ice cream? 8. Vibe. Summer is all about the vibe. This place has it.
google avatar

Evelyn A.

Yelp
Oh so many pleasures at this delightful open air marché! The usual farmers' market goodness, plus a BBQ restaurant, a wine bar, incredible water and warehouse views and calming, joyful vibes abound. If I lived in Montreal, picking up my weekly treats (and making a little date out of it!) at Marché des Éclusiers would always be high on my list of things to do. If anyone I know in Montreal is planning a big event, I'm going to direct them here. The skeleton of this indoor/outdoor space makes my heart sing. Admittedly, I was here for an event, so it probably had some extra sparkle that night, but their roster of folks looks fabulous. I truly can't say enough good things about it...
google avatar

Nadia M.

Yelp
Food and vibes were amazing. I would have given them a 5 if they got my order right. I asked for sauce on the side and the food came with it on the bottom anyway but overall it was still delicious. They did have an issue with bees bc of the plants so if you are allergic bee careful. The ambience was cool and they had these little cute swings by the water. I would definitely go back and I would also recommend to a friend.
google avatar

Bonnie B.

Yelp
This was, hands down, my favorite place to spend time, on my mostly solo-business trip to Montreal. I came here repeatedly--for an al fresco beer, again for a coffee & croissant (then beer) during a rain-soaked morning, and finally brought friends for a beautiful steak dinner, and cocktails, under a full moon. It's basically self-service, no-frills, but oozing with along-the-banks-of-the river atmosphere. Perfect evening to escape the "Old Montreal" tourists. Bonus tip: Hop on a bicycle, just outside le Marché des ´Eclusiers, and pedal along the St Lawrence River, and through Old Montreal. ($3.50 US) https://montreal.bixi.com/main.php?l=en

Yelp
Chill vibes but suuuuuper slow service. The cafe was 15% full when I was here on a Tuesday morning yet it took 30 minutes and my own prompting for the waitress to bring me my bill. Bonus points though because their cold brew was delightful.
google avatar

Leonardo L.

Yelp
Good food but really slow service, go with a lot of patience and an open mind that it will take forever to be served.
google avatar

Deziray D.

Yelp
This Market is amazing great food, drinks and service. The vide is chill and it is very pretty and relaxing by the water.
google avatar

Amie W.

Yelp
I wish Pastaga was downstairs! It would be so nice to drink their biodynamic and natural wines on the main floor patio where the party really is. But that's the only reason I give this only 4 stars, because the downstairs space is beautiful. I came here once when Aperol was doing a free tasting of Spritz, which kind of made it amazing. It's perfect on a sunny afternoon, and I love the Thursday market. The meats are pricey but great quality and the vegetables are very affordable.
google avatar

Serge N.

Yelp
It's nice to sit outside and enjoy the view. Staff members just walk by, look at you and ignore you. What's up that music? Don't they have anything better than Saturday-ride-to-the-club douchebag FM playlists?
google avatar

Fouad B.

Yelp
It's a small foodcourt with a nice terrasse, I usually come here with my parents and brothers during summer. It's next to the canal, in old port. We order draught beers, and when hungry burgers and poutine. It's good for groups, since they have large benches.
google avatar

Risa D.

Yelp
I was here for the press launch with some Yelp Elites so I'll have to update when I go back on a regular day, but man! Just based on the beautiful location and design of the space, how it's on the relaxing lovely edge of the Old Port, the great big picnic tables, the plants, the big central BBQ, the two bars, the local veggies and amazing bakery and boucherie, all the hyper local partners in the space, the long lovely upstairs deck with comfy chairs and excellent bottles, everything about this space makes it a place local and travellers alike will love spending time. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Hannah B.

Yelp
Twice now I've ventured to Marché des Éclusiers on my day off and enjoyed a beautiful and crisp bottle of white on the terrasse overlooking the canal, and allow me to say, nothing beats it. I find the actual market space kinda pricey and without anything that would otherwise interest me but the wine bar is wonderful. Both visits were also accompanied by really friendly and wine-savvy service- perfect for a pretty and semi-secluded drink.
google avatar

Sherri M.

Yelp
Cool hipster vibe. Fun drinks and food. You're right at the Old Port, beside one of the locks ( this is why it's called Eclusie, lock in French). Young dynamic staff. It's also dog friendly, so you chill with your pooch. Sevice is slow.
