Mariano’s Agrees to Buy Jewel-Osco and Create Grocery Super Chain - Eater Chicago

"Mariano’s was founded in 2010 and has positioned itself for attention from chefs and restaurant lovers. The company has worked to stock barbecue sauces and other retail goods made by restaurant owners. It’s also been a fixture at Chicago Gourmet, the annual food and wine festival that takes place a Millennium Park, working with original Check, Please! host Amanda Puck. At one point, it housed cafes branded by Rare Tea Cellar, the gourmet food vendor for many upscale restaurants. That ambition seemed to wane after Kroger took over in 2015 with the giant yearning for synergy, making Mariano’s similar to its 2,800 stores across the country. Chicagoans saw the change; it’s a regular source of anger on neighborhood Facebook pages where Mariano’s shoppers yearn for the pre-Kroger days." - Ashok Selvam

Why Costco Will Never Raise the Price of Rotisserie Chicken | Eater

"A Chicago-based grocery chain that views rotisserie chickens as a traffic-driving item—encouraging add-on purchases like salads and bottles of wine—reflecting a merchandising strategy that uses ready-to-eat birds to boost overall basket size." - Daniela Galarza

Google
Such a good supermarket with loads of options, including freshly made guacamole and smoothies. Large salad and pasta bar too. I love their jalapeño cornbread at the bakery. We came from the UK and bought lots of gifts from here. You can also get their card on the app for discounts. Only disappointment was the lady at the self checkouts was very unhelpful. We could see that there were loads of plastic bags but she kept telling us that there were none left. Seemed very reluctant to even speak with us. Other staff were friendly though.

Google
This store could be so great given its location, but there are some really unhappy people at the registers that make the whole experience at this store a negative. I recently was at the self-checkout registers and thought I had an issue with a sale item (the only item I was purchasing). After scanning the item and putting in my phone number it didn't display the discount price, so I thought it was a coupon-in-the-app situation. When I logged back into the app and searched for the item, I realized there wasn't a digital coupon needed, so I asked for help and explained the situation. Didn't realize that the register applies the discount AFTER you start the check out process, I guess? So the young checkout person, who had been hovering and not offering assistance throughout this whole process, simply pressed the button to start the payment process and revealed the discount applied, I thanked her for her help and she mutters under her breath as she turns away, "you don't need to be mad about it." I was pretty shocked because I was definitely not mad, just confused and a little frustrated, and I certainly didn't take any frustrations out on her. And though I rarely come to this grocery store, this isn't the first time I've had a run-in with a fed up employee at the self checkout. Something isn't exactly right about this place and the employees are showing it in their demeanor.

Google
Love the store. I think I seen 3 managers working. It’s nice to see they’re not just telling people what to do. They’re actually working with their staff. One of our favorite parts of visiting Mariano’s is the fact that you can purchase some food items and have them grill it for you while you wait. Unfortunately, this Mariano’s does not have a “grill master” right now, so their grill availability is based on who can cook that day. I was able to talk to one of the managers and he explained that their long time grill master became ill and they’re looking for someone to help. Hopefully the next time we go back, they’ll have everything back to working order so I can give them a better writing.

Google
This Halsted St. Mariano’s is the best grocery store in Chicago. It’s clean, the staff is uber friendly. I made a mistake, totally my fault for not reading the labels correctly and purchased the wrong items. I returned as soon as I realized my mistake. The front end sup (D) was ever so friendly and understanding and exchanged the items for me without a hassle. I drive across town, past 2 other Mariano’s to shop at this store and the customer service is always stellar. The other 2 need a lot of help and improvement. Kudos to store management for having a great staff and treating customers like guests.

May 2025: escalator has been repaired… for now April 2025: escalator remains broken March 2025: escalator still broken Feb 2025 update: the escalator in the store has been broken for weeks. // It’s sad really because this could be (and probably once was) a nice store. I shop here due to convenience but the selection is often limited or unavailable, products are often on the wrong shelf, and there are NEVER available carts. You want a cart? Hunt one down. Don’t want to do this? Hold what you can carry. Oh they also do not take Apple Pay. Meanwhile, down the road, Whole Foods has no trouble stocking their food, supplying carts and baskets and accepting Apple Pay. I hope Mariano’s Corporate reads this, comes to this store. and gives the manager and staff a talking to. It is embarrassing.

Google
I hate leaving reviews. I’ve been coming to this store all week when I normally go to Whole Foods up the street. Each time I pick a sale item, the cashier tells me to go and take a photo of the price tag before changing it at the register. I thought this was a little inconvenient, but I went and took the photo. This time, it’s a week later, same sale items. I asked to speak with the Manager, Destiny. The manager apologized, but says there was nothing she could do. I had to walk the Isles again and take pictures of two different price tags, not to mention, I had to remember where I picked them up. The cashiers name is Rayvaugn. I was made to feel like I was lying about the price, for a week! Is this normal? Why does the customer have to do the price check and take a picture as proof?

Google
Mariano's is hands down one of my go-to spots for groceries in the city. From their fresh produce to the amazing deli, they’ve got everything you need. I grabbed a rotisserie chicken, some fresh mozzarella, and a couple of cold brews, which came out to around $35. Everything was top-notch, especially the chicken—it was juicy and perfectly seasoned. The bakery section is also a game-changer, especially for those mornings when I’m craving a fresh pastry. Love how everything feels high-end without the crazy prices—definitely recommend!

Google
This place seriously needs to do better when it comes the the seafood. Came in yesterday to get crab legs and could clearly tell the food had gone bad (yellow and raised looking) made the guy behind the counter aware of my concern and left. Came back today and those same spoiled looking crab legs were still on display. I’m writing a review now because this is my second time seeing this. I purchased crab legs some months ago and when I got home and open the sealed bag, I instantly knew they were spoiled from the smell. This is a major health concern and needs to be addressed and fixed.

Yelp
The lobster mac 'n' cheese is delicious. The sushi is what it is and the selection of wines and spirits is what it is also. This particular store is walking distance from a bridge to downtown Chicago. Grocery stores in Chicago are a special thing and in a fully cynical world, I'd expect these folks to be taken over by Albertso --- oops. I read Kroger sold the name 'Mariano's'. I have no idea: I'm going to take away one star for all the confusion. This is not the store where you buy your Twinkies or potato chips. They have them. It's convenient. They're expensive. But get the lobster mac 'n' cheese sometime. It really is a market vote, but it isn't. If I want a pizza roll, I'm going to Jewel-Osco. If I want an inflated attitude, there's a Whole Foods catty-corner from this store. If I want to lose my will to live completely, I'll cross that bridge I mentioned. Oligopolies for everybody.

Yelp
I've been a few times and it's never been a great experience. I bought a lemonade in January that expired the November prior. I went the meat department and no one really helped me so I just left. Overall not a great experience, but it is convenient and decent prices if you are a Marianos member

Yelp
I usually shop at this location when we are in the area. Having said that the parking can be limited and not as quick to find a spot. I find that the staff is always helpful when I need help finding something or it's out of reach. The selection is decent for the size of the store and I can get through the self checkout rather quickly!

Yelp
If your in the area this is a great grocery store with exceptional selection. Some of the staff are very friendly and helpful..some aren't but thats the new norm. Thus is in the Greece area .. we were staying at the crown plaza and this is right across the street. So very convenient to grap snacks ect. I was surprised my previous review was so low in stars ... totally forgot about that guy getting upset i took some pics in the store. My camera isnt fancy or like professionals use. Anyway its great. Huge selection wide variety.

Yelp
I have always been pretty much Whole Foods hardcore. Since I live closer now to Mariano's my lazy bone walks me over to my Mariano's. I have really fell in love with this store and staff. They are so kind and go out of their way to help. I am often shocked at the price differential from Whole Foods, I mean shocked and they have all the organic stuff I will only eat. One other thing is they have all my favorite none food items. Kevin the store manager really runs a great store.

Yelp
There was always only ever going to be one way to get me to come out of Yelptirement. And it was always going to be for the West Loop Mariano's. After hesitating, telling myself to forget about it and just letting it go on so many occasions, we have finally hit paydirt. I'm back, bishes. So I walked in and grabbed a cart from the motherlode and loaded up. Chips. Wine. Yogurt. Coffee. Cookies. Everything. I loaded up that trolley to the tippy top--and then some. Then I grabbed a hand basket from a 10-foot stack of them for the overflow and went to the deli to hang out for 10 minutes and not get waited on. And proceeded to the unnavigable self-checkout corral to get breathed on by the hoi polloi. Oh, but I didn't. Because none of this ever happened. Why? Because there were no carts, baskets, trolleys or anything. Yes, this is what it took to claw me out of Yelptirement. Something even dumber and more infuriating than Yelp itself--the West Loop Mariano's. Imagine having a store where you don't have any method for your customers to carry their items. Imagine this is the situation FOR YEARS. I've walked out half a dozen times as a result--sometimes to the almost as infuriating and nauseating Woke Foods down the street. Oh, I get it. It's the Kroger takeover, the addicts, the criminal element, the homeless (unhoused?) and the explosion of the West Loop's population. But still. Maybe next time they'll have one of those little carts with the crossbar on it so I can bang my shins on it six times. One can dream...

Yelp
3.5 I came here for the grand opening of Stan's donuts inside Mariano's which is on the first floor. This event apparently was advertised everywhere and it was an unsurmounted amount of people in the line in the venue. My big sis and my little sis accompanying me here but we navigated which I have to stay as far apart as we could. The staff did is best job as they could. Some of the offerings were pretty much a shot size far as the beverages, but we did have several several cups of bubbles. Some spike lemonades some espresso martinis. Samples of donuts. Of course they had sushi. They had a charcuterie board. They have fruit. They have samples of chicken and samples of beef brisket. So if you went around several times it was definitely enough to get you satisfied. Especially if you were coming from work. Just needed to grab a bite special if you were close in the area which I was really close to it . I had already had dinner so I was just coming for an after dinner drink and socialize. The event was good. It's just crowded but I appreciate it. They didn't have to do that. They kept replenishing the food. They kept popping more bottles. We enjoyed ourselves.

Yelp
My co-workers and I wanted to go out for a drink. Marianos has a wine bar with very goo prices. The problem, never know if its open. I called the store and the response I was given when I asked if the wine bar was open was "I haven't seen anyone". This person never checked with someone or even tried. At this store you can not see the bar from the service desk. The service is very lousy. It would be great if the service desk could give service.

Yelp
Nice clean grocery store near Greektown and UIC campus. Very organized layout with a wide variety of choices of freshly squeezed juices, bakery items, local and international cheeses, deli meats, fresh produce and more. Check out the pop shop for late night munchies. Free parking for two hours in an open garage. Bring shopping bags for shopping. Sign up for the rewards card for added discounts. Bonus: the Kroger app works here.

Yelp
Now that I have a car I can drive to places like this: I have not had problems finding a parking spot even at busy times, usually end up on the roof! On the weekends lately they have been very crowded, you look down the relatively narrow aisles and they look impossible to traverse, so you park your cart and dive in to get what you need. The lines can be quite long on Saturday but it moves steadily. The store is quite packed and has everything you need, a bit of a strange layout but they use every corner! Carts are short, we have had to go looking for them around the store sometimes, things are just busy

Lillian C.

Yelp
This is the best Mariano's in the city. It is clean, the lines move fast and everyone is always so friendly. I travel past the Jewels on seaplanes and the Whole Foods on halsted to shop here. I love it!

Meg B.

Yelp
Asa and Alina in the bakery are the best. They made my night by helping with a last minute bakery request and were SO kind! Love this place.

Yelp
Mariano's is a great local supermarket. While it originated as a locally owned grocery chain, it is now owned by Kroger. They have a great selection of groceries, with a large hot bar, sushi/poke bar (great poke and an easy post-grocery meal), large beer/wine/liquor selection, and a bar area which has live music on Friday nights. One challenge I've found: there never seem to be enough baskets, so you'll need to do a quick loop from the entrance to the self checkout area to pick one up most shopping trips, though recently that has started to improve.

Yelp
I still dont know why people come to this place. It is pricey! Just come here because it the only place that open at 6am. Came here today doing an errand foe the mrs. And they do have a feminine care asile but no feminine wash? It says Femine Care!

Yelp
I frequently stop into Mariano's to grab a few groceries every couple of weeks. This is a large store with a lot of options. It's well organized and typically very clean, although I've often found that if I go in the afternoon when they are restocking, it can be difficult to navigate around all the empty boxes they leave in the aisles. I love their discount racks - there is one in the front of the store with dry goods, one in the dairy section with bakery items, and one in the produce section with fruit and veggies. I like to shop these racks and get a great deal on items I can prep and freeze. As a student, I appreciate that they make these discounts available because it stretches my budget. The staff are all very friendly and their customer service hotline is great too. I recommend downloading the Mariano's app to clip digital coupons - there are usually some pretty great deals to be found!

Rob G.

Yelp
Easily the worst supermarket in the West Loop. When you enter the building you will immediately notice how filthy the place is. Floors are stained and worn out. Good luck finding a grocery cart, We have repeatedly been forced to take the elevator to the roof and fetch our own! Shelves are consistently half empty. It's like shopping in a third world market. Hope you enjoy Muzak that is cranked to rock concert decibels. Nothing like Katy Perry shrieking overhead while you pick out your breakfast cereal! Staff members range from dismissive to downright hostile. I will never give this dump another dime of my money. My advice, if you live in the neighborhood, go to Jewel on Des Plaines. A far better experience.

E C.

Yelp
i've been coming to this Mariano's for seven years, but i think i may be done with it. there are never any baskets (just giant carts that don't fit in the aisles), the sales prices are always a hassle, the escalators never work, and there's one poor cashier at rush hour. i used to love the chirashi in the sushi aisle, but today i bought it and see that it is less sashimi than ever before (no tamago???, and all the fish slices are paper-thin), also one lousy limp mushroom, and not even the usual lettuce leaf. price is still the same though, of course. zero standards. sadly not worth it anymore.

Yelp
This review pertains to the hot foods dept and the customer service. We love the fried chicken for the taste and the cost. It's a 2 for $10 deal. Each pack contains 8 pieces of chicken. That's a good deal. It's best when it's hot. So I always call to have it ready for pickup on the way home. This is the only place that ever gets it right. The other locations either lose my order or never hold any like they say they would. This location has always been clean and bright. It's in the west loop so parking has always been hard after work. However in the current condition of the pandemic, parking after work hours b has been easy. Hoping things get back to normal, but for now I can't complain about anything. I'll keep coming until parking gets harder again. It's a small parking area and it shared it with local businesses.

Yelp
Definite improvement since they are now owned by Kroger. And of course because of Covid nobody is eating off the salad bar which is the upside of that. Also a nice gentleman helped me in floral when I purchased a large vase to take on my last road trip and he went out of his way to get me set up. I appreciate that. Also just a few days ago the kid working the seafood counter was very attentive (even in the last hour of the seafood area being open - which is they close one hour before the store) and he wasn't in a hurry to get out - in fact he went out of his way to answer a couple of questions and actually engaged me in a nice little conversation If I keep writing, this may bump to four stars! will wait a while on that. To be updated as required.....

Yelp
I came here yesterday and bought my groceries. I'm happy with the quality and service so I made this review. The veggies and fruits that I bought looked fresh. The orange was sweet and not sour. Some of the oranges that I bought in other stores were sour and I don't like it. I also bought 3 bottles of wine. I like it's cheaper price compared to other stores. I'll save enough money because of it.  When I can't reach the snacks in some high part of the shelves some staff immediately assist and help me. He also asks me if I need anything or if he needs help I will call him. He's so nice and kind. It's good that they have a staff like that. Some customers will be grateful because of the service.  About the food and drinks. They have a different variety of food and drinks with a good quality. You can find anything you want in this shop. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
I come from the land of Gelsons! This enchanted land has aisles upon aisles of incredible produce, very high-end foods (both canned, bottled, or fresh), unbelievable wines and spirits, pristine shopping and great service (no check-out line is over a 5 minute wait. In other words, I'm spoiled. Here in Chicago, we've done the Whole Foods thing, the Jewel Osco thing, and the Cemak thing. Not until we chanced upon Marianos on Halstead St. did we find a reasonable comparison to our "Enchanted Gelsons Market." Marianos had everything (and I mean everything) and more than our go-to market back home. My wife spent an hour on Marianos International aisle looking at foods from Prague, Milan, Athens, Tel Aviv, and so many more eclectic destinations. She was in awe and inspired to use these strange and exotic ingredients. Their Spirits, Beer, and Wine sections were dizzying with the amount of choices they give you. Mind you, Marianos is not a liquor store. I was duly impressed. I never found going to the market a "Fun" thing. It has always been a chore. Marianos made this chore, an outing. Hallelujah Marianos!

Yelp
This place has become an absolute joke. Every single time I've gone here for the past month there is like 1 hand basket floating around the entire store, not enough check out lanes open, empty and or completely disorganized shelves ...and many employees who don't seem to care about their jobs...this only points to to thing - extrmely poor management. I'll pay more, go across the street to Whole Foods, and know there will be an abundance of hand baskets sitting right by the door as I walk in.
google avatar

Yelp
It's ok for a quick stop in when using self checkout but it is not a good experience for pantry load shopping or anytime you have a bit too much for self checkout. Cashiers are rude and do not offer any assistance in bagging. They simply scan and throw stuff in a pile with no regard to produce, cleaning chemicals, eggs or chips. When finished, cashier stood there watching me bag, acting irritated as the line continued to grow. I've never experienced a worse grocery store checkout experience and this is seemingly the norm now that they installed self-check outs (which don't have enough space for unloading a cart). This location is convenient and used to be great (before Kroger bought them). If you have a car, you're better off going to Pete's Fresh Market or Jewel.

Rob S.

Yelp
What happened to this place? Ever since Kroger took over it's been in steady decline -- carts and baskets are nowhere to be found, long lines at checkout and self-checkout. Last night was the worst: - No carts. No baskets. That's the norm lately. - Two checkout lanes open with lines stretching back into the aisles. - Self-checkout line wrapped around two aisles, at least 15 people deep even with 8 self-service registers open. - Only one person working the self-checkout area, so if you needed an ID check or the register didn't recognize that you had placed your item in your bag, you had to wait for the attendant. And wait. And wait. And wait. - My last item wasn't recognized, but at three others needed assistance. I could see the line growing longer. Finally got help and I felt the need to apologize to the people coming in after me. It's ridiculous. If it happened on occasion, ok, stuff happens. If it happened a lot, something is wrong. If it happens all the time (and it is), it's time to look for a new grocery store. You can't serve your customers so what's the point?

Thomas C.

Yelp
This store is going totally bad. Kroger has agreed to sell Marianos in order to pave the way for the Albertson's deal. When you only have two grocery companies anymore, who's going to do better? What happens when Kroger devours Jewel? They do nothing for the customer and continue to grow, like The Blob, because their inefficiencies hurt their margins so much, they have to devour other companies. --Carts. there are no carts because the employees are using them to stock shelves. Today, no carts, almost out the door, an employee came over with four of them. --Customer service. There is none unless you find a helpful employee. --Employees. I had six items. A woman with a lot of stuff in front of me, I was second and last in line. The checker did not know how to weigh and price two sweet potatoes. There were three people bounding around behind the customer desk. One of them went to the checker and started socializing. The other two? Yucks up front. Do you think one of them would have started bagging? We haven't been to MARS YET either. --There are many, many items in the store that don't have price tags. Last time, 80 percent of the plastic bag/twist tie dispensers in Produce were empty. --So? I DON'T I think there is any management in the store--or the managers they have are . . . pick a word. I find it utterly contemptuous that these employees act this way, which is to NOT act an what needs to be done. --I wanted the stuff in my cart, but I pushed it to an aisle and walked out. --Lines. I go in early afternoon, weekday dead time, in a roll of the dice. Usually works. But today, Tuesday, they were still in disaster control from the weekend. --They used to have this young bagger guy who was the best bagger I've seen in 20 years. Bad news, I haven't seen him for a month. --I got a nice walk out of it and was able to hit the Walgreens. But the fixin's for a sandwich I wanted are probably still sitting in the aisle. IF you are reading this Kroger (probably not), I'm going to try Jewel tomorrow, but that includes two cab rides. And don't complain about my grocery shopping at Amazon. Amazon doesn't have everything, but they tell you when they're out of it. Just plan ahead. Bob Mariano had a vision. It lasted what, two-and-a-half years?

Chelsea K.

Yelp
As I was checking out I noticed a roach on my self checkout register. I told an employee and he walked away looking like he was going to go do something or tell someone. However, by the time I looked back the employee had returned and someone else was using register and nothing was done.

Yelp
I love this store!!! Conveniently located near my work. They have a huge selection.I can always find some GREAT DEALS!! I can even come in and grab a bite because they have indoor seating where I can purchase food and even a glass of wine if I like.Definitely glad to have Mariano's near me.

Christy S.

Yelp
Still no carts. I don't understand why no one is responsible for retrieving carts. I'd take carts over the band playing.

Marcia S.

Yelp
What's going on here? Until recently, this store was my favorite place to buy groceries. No longer. A few days ago, there were out of half of the vegetables I usually buy. And the few they had were old. The cauliflower had mold, the fresh lettuce was wilted, and the one bag of brussels sprouts left was brown. No microwavable bags of green beans or broccoli on the shelves. And they haven't had organic celery for ages. Last week they had a sale on three pounds of ground sirloin. They were out of the pre-packaged meat. But the butcher refused to use the sirloin in his case. The person behind the customer service counter acted confused when I asked for a raincheck. The employees used to be the best part of this store, and now they could care less. I asked an employee for help, and he told me he wasn't a manager and walked away. Add to this the facts that the escalators are broken and the store is dirty, and I'm thinking they're having serious financial problems. The grocery business is very competitive. Seems the only place you can't buy milk and eggs is the AMC. So it's unusual to see a store deteriorate to this point, and so quickly. It's almost like they've just given up.

Yelp
I was horribly harassed by their security guy on Aug. 8 around 8:30pm, in front of the elevator of Mariano's westloop Chicago store. I was putting what I bought from the shopping cart to my own backpack, in front of the gate of elevator at 1st floor, which the checkout stations are located upstairs. A security guy with handcuff hanging on waist, might just want to get into the elevator but stopped and asked me:"do you have a receipt?" I was shocked at first, couldn't understand what he's asking for, and why. He repeated the question a couple of times, I stopped stocking in, and fished out the receipt, trying to show him, but he didn't take a look. I suddenly felt terribly humiliated, asked him why he asked. He said he saw I was putting things into my bag. Again, I was too shocked to defense myself, this is the first time in my life was taken as a potential thief. I'm sure we can use our own bags in Mariano's, also I'm sure we are not mandated required to keep the receipt. I don't know if Mariano's require their security guards to walk around outside of the checkout points to randomly check customers in that building if they have receipts. I only know that this security guard not only humiliated me but also the Mariano's cashiers upstairs. And this might involve discrimination, this security guy is Caucasian, and I'm an Asian female. I've been shopping at this store once per week since I moved in this neighborhood last year. It's really convenient for me to grab something groceries on my way home from work. I feel sorry for this Mariano's. Yue

Yelp
Luis stopped what he was doing at 530 pm to make a custom sushi roll. Never seemed bothered. Made me chill because I can not stand making people do stuff like that. Cheers man and thank you!! You guys are lucky to have him.

Yelp
Mariano's Tytiana W. is one of the nicest people I've ever met, and very funny too! Thanks to her for caring enough to help me troubleshoot how to set up my Mariano's App, so I could save $$$, when others wouldn't. She deserves a raise! Thanks Tytiana! :)

Yelp
Horrible and unprofessional customer servive most of the time, although there have sometime been some very professional and intelligent staff who greatly stood out from the rest. More often than not deplorable and shameful bathroom conditions! This store seems to have a terrible business model, (enforced) standards, and / or management.

Many of the employees are nice, but this is the second time I have encountered Brian at Mariano's and had a negative experience. Each time we've interacted, there is no greeting, just a stare after I say, "hello, how's it going"? I even repeated it twice today to make sure he heard me and he just stared back without response. Brian has ZERO customer service skills. Maybe management should place him somewhere in the store where he does not interact with the general public. 1 star rating for Mariano's based on my interactions with Brian.

Yelp
I guess we're spoiled in West Loop because Chicagoans in general seem to regard this as a high-end grocery store but I only come here when I don't feel like walking the extra block to Whole Foods or H Mart. When I moved to West Loop from my small college town, Mariano's was heaven on Earth. To this day, the variety and quality of food (which is a blessing--something I am thankful for every day) is great. It's just that the store is outclassed in nearly every aspect by Whole Foods. H Mart is in a class of its own when it comes to Asian specialties. I found that the problems started occurring when the Walmart at Presidential Towers closed. Suddenly, the store was more crowded and the checkout lines became much more chaotic. This is true for most grocery stores, but if you visit here at odd hours, pickings can be slim. Logistically, the store is a no-go at prime time on the weekends. They're often out of carts/baskets and the checkout scene is madness. Many people will bring up how miserable and unhelpful the workers are. I don't think it's epidemic, but, from the cash registers to the butchery, the customer service simply doesn't compare to Whole Foods.

Yelp
I always joke that Mariano's is my favorite wine bar in Chicago, but this joke has quickly become a reality. With $3 glasses of wine (of the month), it can't be beat! Then with the live music and the opportunity to be productive and get some grocery shopping done, you'll know where to find me on a Friday night! Food options are on par with other grocery stores in the area. It's less pretentious than Whole Foods but slightly more expensive than Pete's Fresh Market. I don't do all my grocery shopping here but I do a lot of my wine drinking here!

Yelp
shot out to Subass from the hot bar who went out of his was with a smile on his face to get what I asked for when they were SLAMMED. Love Love Love Mariano's, just wish you were nationwide!!! Also want to recognize Memo on the grill for coming to find me to hook me up with something I was looking for - he could have easily gone about his busy day -- yet he went above and beyond --- exceptional!!! Thank you!!!

Yelp
I love a good Marianos to get my groceries from. I find their prices are usually great and they have a wide variety of items This location has its coffee shop and ice cream parlor right away when you wall in with a nice section for seating. Up stairs is everything else including their prepared foods. Compared to others i found that this one had less prepared foods to choose from. I also went early in the morning around 8 and there wasn't much ready to go. They did have a very large selection of bakery items and unlike others i have been too they had a fudge station and chocolates! They also had a large variety of donuts ready to go. The only other thing i found there was less of was their products. Otherwise great place

Yelp
I'm going to vent my frustration about this Mariano's on Yelp because my husband is tired of hearing about how much I can't stand this place. I only come here when I'm desperate for something because it's the closest grocery store to our apartment. Every time I do, I'm frustrated with how strangely organized the store is and how AWFUL their employees are. I have yet to interact with anyone who isn't completely unhelpful or rude. Every time I've checked out, they've barely acknowledged my presence and only ask the necessary questions before shoving me out the door without a simple "thank you". As someone who worked in a not-so-fun customer service position for years, I truly don't think it's THAT hard to extend very basic common courtesy. Or at least give me a self-checkout so I have the option to avoid your terrible employees.

Yelp
One of the worst stores I've been in. Organized very poorly. Why is the same kind of vegetable broth in 3 different places, the only difference is size? Why was a rack of hard salmi in the same isle as the tampons? Most of the workers, not all but most of the workers are rude. Get annoyed if you ask them a question. I don't like checking out because they ignore you to hold conversations with other workers. I worked in retail. I know it's tough but when a customer is asking you a simple question you shouldn't be rude. The store is horrible, my fiance went there this morning to get tissue after the manager told her they would get a shipment today and that she should come early. She came early and there was no tissue. The truck didn't come. Thats fine, things happen. But the problem came in when she asked 3 workers for help and two out of the three were rude and ignored her and the third was just rude. I'm so done with this place.

Yelp
This is my go-to grocery store. It has all of your basic food needs. They do not sell batteries....weird....I know. The bar area has a fun group but it is compact. This place would benefit from a bigger bar area. The eating area is ample enough for the revolving lunch and dinner patrons. My only complaints are that the escalator breaks down often. Those are not fun to navigate when they are stationary. I get dizzy. Yes there is an elevator, but I digress. Secondly, the parking. There is a covered parking area and a much larger open parking garage on the upper floor. I have had times that I have driven over because I was picking up water and did not want to carry and this last time I sat for 20 minutes. Nobody was leaving, I doubt that those parked in the spots were even shopping. I left, ran a different errand, and the same cars were still sitting over an hour later. Not cool. There are a number of reserved spots, but there are times that towing companies do not hesitate to tow....even when you are shopping (it happened to a friend). The salad bar seems to be closing earlier and earlier these days. Food is removed and I don't know if that is a new Kroger rule or just something employees are doing to get out of there earlier rather than later. Since Kroger has taken over the fresh bread has changed. It is not as fresh. Period. Employees have always been friendly and helpful at the checkout. The new self check out area is great. Don't forget to input your alternate ID. Bike parking on street.

Yelp
This Mariano's is the worst. I have never scene such a poor excuse of employees and customer service ever. I've been going here for years due to location. Every time i go i tell myself it is the last time. Well this most recent trip is certainly my last. I won't give the whole story of all the disaster. But here's the highlights. 1. No carts available upon entry. 2. No cashier at the meat grilling counter. 3. Did not bag my milk/put in cart, that i paid for. 4. Out of 20% of the items that i came to buy. 5. 8$ for a small bowl of mixed fruit that was the worst I've ever had, must of been spoiled. This was the most unproductive and and inconvenient shopping trip yet. Not to mention just the overall lazy and unfriendly workers there. The grill guy was the worst of them all. Anyhow, i will not be returning, nor should anyone else.

Yelp
This is my favorite grocery store in Chicago. They have a lot of fancy things it's hard to get anywhere else, but they also have a lot of cheap generic brand essentials. Everyone who works here is really friendly and helpful. This holiday season we have been using the grocery pickup option and it's so smooth; all you need to do is order ahead online the day before, pull into one of a few designated spots at your appointed time, and send a text.

Yelp
This place has gradually gone down hill. Kind of disappointed after coming here for years. Completely out of common items which is just bizarre. The got rid of the cash registers near the liquor area so no fast checkout anymore when picking up beer. Those machines work great for like 10 items, not when I'm actually getting groceries. You got like 1 person to deal with all the glitchy checkout machines (paper bags seem to cause serious issues with whatever it's doing). Don't get rid of the paper bags, just bring back actual cashiers. It's just a bunch of employees that seem generally annoyed at everything.

Yelp
Mariano's need to clean the carts regularly. Every time I try to take a cart from the rack of carts inside they are filled with crap.

Yelp
They start cleaning the food fridges a hour before leaving all product out and exposed !!! Over priced liquor paid 27$ for a bottle I could've gotten for 16 at target.

Yelp
Things are going downhill here fast. I shop here every week sometimes twice a week and for the last month every time I go there are ZERO carts in the cart area. This is just laziness on the employees part! The carts not being returned for shoppers that enter the store. I told an employee about this the second time it happened and nothing has changed. I told customer service again today and he said I will let the manager know. Another point is often inventory is left out - produce, bread, even dairy products- pushed to the front to try to sell it for full price when the expiration date is in a day from when I see it. I've brought home grape tomatoes that have molded a day or two after I bought them, same with avocados (which of course they're still selling at full price.) If Mariano's doesn't get it together I won't be shopping here anymore.

Yelp
To me, this is the original Mariano's in their new incarnation. It has the grill and the wine bar as well as a fantastic selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. I live near the Western Springs Mariano's but one of the creepy pedophiles - the one who looks like Noam Chomsky crosses with a Wicked Witch of the West - from that new building on Ogden where they let sex offenders live is always around that Western Springs Mariano's. Besides following children walking without parents in the area, he can also be violent and this makes for an unpleasant shopping experience. Grocery shopping is a family affair in our family and we can bring a few bags, the wagon and jump on the train downtown with the two kids, have a day downtown then do our shopping at this Mariano's. And taking the train, if mom and dad want a glass of wine we don't have to drive. I have also noticed the vegetables and fruits are better at this location. Glad Kroger didn't change much.

Yelp
I've seen better stocked produce sections in 1840s Ireland, 1920s America and current day Cuba. Let's go Brandon! I was going to just get the non produce items I needed but the line to pay for the crappy groceries was laughable.
