Best Restaurants to Try on the Drive Between Los Angeles and Las Vegas | Eater LA

"Maria’s has a diverse menu of typical Mexican combination plates just off Interstate 15. Think cheese-laden plates of enchiladas, spicy shrimp camarones a la diabla, hearty beef chile colorado with dark red sauce, and grilled chicken fajitas served with refried beans and Mexican rice. Pretty much anything on the menu will do a fine job of obliterating any hunger along the 270-mile road between Los Angeles and Vegas." - Matthew Kang

Google
Great pit stop if youre into mexican food! Very Authentic they have many options. A bit small and awkwardly placed in the middle of 2 truck wash stations they pull up next to the window to power wash the trucks as you eat... They dont have any natural fruit drinks u would think like piña or horchata but the food makes up for all this! I tried the Garlic shrimp Camarones al mojo de ajo with rice and beans it comes with some tortillas your choice of corn or flour as always. We also tried the pastor quezadilla which is seasoned pork meat. They sell imported coca cola from mexico

Location is a Truck Wash. Chicken Fajitas were actually very good and so were the rice and beans. The server was friendly and the A/C felt nice inside.

Google
The food smelled amazing and tasted even better. My husband got the burrito deluxe and usually I don't like when things are covered in sauce because the sauce more times than not is gross. BUT not this time that sauce was good a bit spicy but very very good. The beef fajitas were well seasoned and had Great flavor. Beans we just the right consistency and the guacamole was delicious. Rice was good and I was able to eat it. Some time Mexican restaurants put veggies in it that have Lima beans and being allergic to them not good. Maria's was awesome for not having anything in the rice, I truly appreciate that. something I'm picky about is the ice tea, there ice tea was really good. There was no after taste and it tasted fresh. Our server was so nice, she was perfect. Well worth the money. and the short walk from the Love's truck stop allowed us to get out and away from the truck. We will be back no doubt on that. Next time I'm making sure I pay as they had Mexican wedding cookies at the counter. They are probably my favorite and more than likely would have been as good as the food was. ( Yes, my husband is in trouble for not getting them but next time.) almost forgot the free chips and salsa were both really good and fresh. The salsa did not lack on flavor. Highly recommend everyone to stop here for a meal.

Google
Fantastic food and exceptional service! The señoritas hosting the restaurant were incredibly kind and welcoming. We tried a variety of fajitas and horchatas, and everything was absolutely delicious. The presence of locals and truck drivers enjoying their meals was a clear sign of the restaurant's great reputation. Highly recommend this spot for authentic and flavorful Mexican cuisine!

Google
Great place! Ordered fajitas and a Mexican coke. Chips and salsa were thick and home made ! Clean and friendly !

Google
Friendly staff, had that home cooking feel from a Mexican mother I never had. Surprised that the best rated place was at this truck stop.

Google
Im a OTR truck driver found this place right next door to the Loves. Got 2 kinds of tacos, Pastor and Cabeza. Portions are bigger then your average taco truck but so is the price. Also got a carne asada burrito, ultimate style with sauce sour cream and salsa. The food was great little bit higher then usual but portions for the food made up for it. Will visit again if I'm staying for the night.

Google
Man this place it. Over the phone the lady told me it’s huge portions and she didn’t lie. I just got the taco salad it was definitely enough for two people. Taste was amazing I wish I could eat it all but I can’t. Vegetables were soooo fresh I don’t even like bell peppers but I ate them. If your near by hell far away it’s worth the stop. PS they gave me napkins that seems small but you would be surprised at how many places don’t or forgets

Yelp
Great food, great service and worth the small wait for genuine Mexican food. Parking was unusual but worth it!

Yelp
On the other side of the 15 freeway at Lenwood road outside of Barstow, Maria's is located inside a semi truck trailer wash facility. This place is legit! They serve some mighty good Mexican crab while you're watching the big semi's get cleaned up. One of the sauces was very hot and delicious. I went for the two item combo with enchilada and taco which was very nice. The lady went for the chile verde I believe. By the way their chips are house made fried in the back. Not out of a bag and delicious. The server was very nice and everybody is very courteous there. If you don't feel like going to the original del taco, make sure you hit this place on your way to Vegas.

Yelp
Grat service and food. You won't regret. Try Tri-Color-Enchiladas.......tortas are good too

Yelp
Friendly folks, great chow, clean large restrooms next to Loves. Got our food in 11 minutes. Three different salsas, great beans and rice.

Yelp
On our way to Las Vegas decided to stop and get some breakfast. We were craving spicy food. After searching decided to look for a Mexican restaurant and came across Maria. It's located in a truck wash area. It's easy to miss the restaurant because it blends in with the truck washstation, I believe they were just opening appeared they were not ready, waited a little long to placed our order. The service was not bad, but they seem busy. There were only two staff, including the cook. We order pancakes, Chilaquiles, the coffee was really good surprisingly because it didn't look good but it was delicious, nothing stood out this place, it was on the way.

Yelp
Thank you to the reviewers for this recommendation! Odd location attached to truck cleaning wash shop lol. But who cares when the food is good. Starting with the free chips. These are authentic chips. Made from real tortillas. The chips are freshly fried and flaky. Off to a great start! Ps. ask for for the spicy salsa if you want something hot. The nice lady taking our order was helpful and made clear their refried beans are pork free and made with vegetable oils. She even came to the table to double check that my refried beans didn't come with cheese.

Yelp
The Chile Verde burrito, it is big and fills the belly, it's not that spicy and the pork was very well cooked, I recommend it. Friendly service and good ambiance.

Roberto D.

Yelp
Food was good service was slow but very professional and pleasant was the server who did check up on us several times as we waited for food. I would definitely go back and try more of the dishes. I had the chile verde omelette and it was delicious. The place is right between truck wash bays but parking is pretty good and prices are decent too

Yelp
Driving from Lake Havasu to Bakersfield, we needed some lunch in Barstow. I spotted this place in my google search and the reviews and photos hooked me. Everything I read in the reviews was true. We got 5 tacos ala carte; 2 shrimp, 2 asada and 1 al pastor. The server was so sweet and brought chips and salsas to our table. The place is clean and adorably decorated. I highly recommend stopping on here and grabbing some delicious, authentic Mexican food!

Yelp
A great little find in the middle of nowhere and next to a trailer trucks wash. It's definitely worth giving a try if you're in the area and craving Mexican food. The place from the outside seems a bit off-putting. You might even think you have the wrong place or that they are closed because of the look and location. But just trust it and go through the door. There are entrances on both sides of the building, including a separate entrance in the back for the people washing their trucks, where you'll also find a small shop with truck related items. *** Anyway, the food was unexpectedly great! You can order at the counter, or someone will take your order at the table (just be sure they see you sit down). They brought us chips and salsa to the table. We ordered the Menudo, potato tacos, and cielo mar y tierra mixed fajitas (I think that's what it was called) basically shrimp, steak, and chicken. I asked for a spicy salsa, but what they had was not spicy to me. The menudo was a nice portion and very tasty. The fajitas dish was also a good and large portion. The potato tacos were just ok, a little bland. Inside the hard shell, there were chunky potatoes instead of mashed potato and mozzarella cheese instead of queso fresco... so at least not what I was expecting. Sadly, they don't serve breakfast all day. I was curious about their chilaquiles and breakfast food, so I'll likely be back to try these another day. P.s. the restrooms are all the way in the back, so you'll get to check out the little store/ truck shop.

Yelp
Quick meal in Barstow. Good burritos and a familiar and calm ambiance. Fast service and good food, best Mexican this side of Barstow

Yelp
This place is a Mexican food Oasis in the middle of the desert. The food is delicious. The staff can be heard, laughing and singing. They know how to live life. Don't be fooled by the truck washing bays surrounding the small building. You order at the counter. There is plenty of seating to dine in. Our two elementary aged kids split a taquitos plate. The chimichanga and chicken salad we also ordered were delicious. They will serve you chips and salsa to your delight! If you're looking for quality food as you drive between California and Nevada, give this place a stop.

Yelp
Great customer service and excellent food! Restrooms were clean. Thank you for the hospitality and overall nice experience.

Yelp
Place was crap, she didn't tell me there was an up charge for the food. Service was crap and meat was full of chewy stuff. Definitely not worth coming here. Completely surprised how they have 4 stars.

Yelp
4.5 stars. Thank you fellow Yelpers for turning us onto this place during our Vegas road trip The shrimp enchiladas w/ rice & beans tasted very authentic, and my wife really liked her shrimp burrito (which was huge). --- The restaurant looks out of place as it is adjacent to a tire shop, but don't let that deter you.... we had a great experience. The woman running the counter who also doubled as our server was very friendly, as was the chef who I spoke with briefly. After a long weekend of meat dishes in Vegas, my wife opted for the shrimp burrito (which she ordered "dry" rather than "wet"), while I opted for the shrimp enchiladas. The meal started off with complimentary chips and salsa, which they served us with the mild red, the mild green, and a hot/spicy red salsa. My wife really liked the green salsa, while I liked both the hot and the green. The mild red reminded me of a generic watery salsa from a bottle.....I didn't like it on the chips, but it did mix in well with my rice. My shrimp enchiladas had large tasty shrimp in them, and the meal reminded me of ones that I have had in Mexico. The green sauce that came with it was a bit mild for me, but adding on a few spoonfuls of the hot sauce that came with the chips perked the meal up nicely. My wife was very happy with her shrimp burrito, which also was chock full of large shrimp. Next time we find ourselves doing a roadtrip past Barstow, we will definitely plan on eating a meal here again.

Yelp
This was a roadside stop on my family vacation from California to Vegas. The building looks a bit inconspicuous, it's basically a small outlet connected to a truck stop. We ordered the beef fajitas, tacos, and chile relleno. The food was great, although we thought the prices were a bit high. There was only one person running everything there (cashier, serving), so service was a little slow. Overall a solid spot for Mexican food though

Yelp
Looks sketchy but we'll be coming back to this place by the truck wash every time we pass thru. Sweet lady and amazing chips. Food was excellent.
google avatar

Christina V.

Yelp
Food is absolutely amazing. We always stop by when we're in the area. It's connected to a truck wash so convenient to truckers. The service is always excellent!
google avatar

Valerie R.

Yelp
The carnitas were fabulous! And the rice and beans were perfect!! So often these are so bland. Everything was fresh. Smiling staff. Great find! Oh and the chips were really good too.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is amazing!!!Real Mexican food. The caldo de res was delicious. The service was really good. The salsas are really good too. Highly recommended if you want to try real authentic Mexican food.

Yelp
When you're on the road in California, how often do you fine a unique family owned and operated Mexican restaurant that serves authentic Mexican cuisine? Add to the equation... breakfast? You'll find it all at Maria's Mexican Restaurant, located in Barstow, CA. The restaurant is tucked away in a truck stop, off Interstate 15, and if it wasn't for the sign, you'd think the restaurant was simply an extension of the truck stop. Barstow locals, truckers and travelers on Interstate 15 know that Maria's Mexican Restaurant is a great place to enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine. The dining room is quite large, sparsely decorated and very long. It's quite comfortable and attractively lit, thanks to the many windows which let in the sunlight. Inside, you'd almost forget you are dining at a truck stop Mexican diner. Well... almost... Furniture is spartan, as it's mostly tables, but with booths on one side, and is comfortable, but definitely nothing fancy. No worries, as I came for the food and not the furniture. If you're looking to enjoy beer or wine, you're out of luck as Maria's is "dry," by Texas standards. As you walk in to the restaurant, the first thing you'll see is the order counter, where you'll make your selection from the overhead menu, place your order, and pay for it. In return, you'll receive a receipt and when your order is ready, it will be brought to your table by a friendly member of the staff. From the "Mexican Style Breakfast Plates" section of the menu, I went with #12, "Bistec con Huevos," which is Mexican style steak and eggs. Oh my... such a beautiful presentation! The menu goes on to describe this as, "A broiled steak and eggs done your way with tortillas. Comes with Mexican potatoes and beans." I ordered my eggs to be fried sunnyside up, and corn tortillas as my choice. Oh yes... I asked my carne asada - steak - to be broiled to medium. My breakfast was delivered to me in a record-setting 10 minutes! I was happy to see my breakfast included a cup of in-house made salsa and a slice of orange, which added to the flavor of this delicious breakfast. The main entree, the steak, or known in Mexico as carne asada was lightly seasoned, broiled medium to perfection, and arrived with perfect grill marks. A steak knife was included, but it was simply window dressing, as the steak was fork tender, as I cut it to size simply using my fork. I ordered my eggs fried sunnyside up and they arrived exactly the way I ordered them, thanks to the talent of the chef. The Mexican potatoes were diced, fried on the griddle to a light golden brown, and included diced red and green chili pepper. The potatoes were slightly crunchy on the outside, but tender on the inside, just like the breakfast potatoes I've enjoyed during my countless trips to Mexico. The steak was absolutely delicious, but ... the refried beans! I've enjoyed refried beans in my life, but Maria's Mexican Restaurant absolutely excels when it comes to refried beans. I could taste the lard, which gave the beans a down-to-earth, nutty flavor, and the shredded Mexican cheese boosted the flavor up a notch or two. Great refried beans in the Mojave Desert! Maria's Mexican Restaurant truly serves a delicious breakfast! They are a little hard to find, as they're tucked away in a truck stop, but ask any trucker who travels Interstate 15, and I'm sure they'll recommend Maria's, for outstanding Mexican cuisine. You'll enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine at Maria's Mexican Restaurant while you get your big rig washed, gassed-up or serviced. Or, if you're like me, you'll just drop in and enjoy the amazing food and the friendly service, including breakfast. A Barstow, CA classic, Mexican restaurant... Cheers!

Yelp
I love this place! I love the chimichangas, the macho burrito, the flautas, the asada quesadillas...etc. The people are always so nice and friendly. I'd go more often if I wasn't trying to lose weight.
google avatar

Colleen G.

Yelp
This place is a little hidden Gem. Guess I won't be hitting up the Del Taco anymore. Everything from the chips and salsa to the carnitas y carne asada were delish!! The staff was friendly and helpful. Might try the carne asada quesadilla next time we cruise through. Muchas Gracias!

Lizet H.

Yelp
Asada tacos were bomb! The meat was cooked and seasoned perfectly, definitely coming back when I'm On my way to Vegas
google avatar

Prianka S.

Yelp
A hidden gem right off the 15 when you are on the way to Vegas. I love how authentic the interior was and how authentic the food was too. The bathrooms are also nice and clean. I got the tricolor enchiladas with chicken, rice and beans and they were delicious. They came with a small salad. The quality was amazing and I would definitely recommend this to anybody looking for an authentic Mexican meal.
google avatar

Yelp
What a great little hole in the wall place. I love places like this. What a fined. Service was excellent. Food was as well. Definitely will stop here again when I have time.
google avatar

Kellie D.

Yelp
Waiting for 45 min to get my food and to have my order completely wrong is ridiculous. Never again
google avatar

Cory Y.

Yelp
Random truck-stop spot that was such a pleasant surprise with how great the food was and the service was even better. Friendly service. Shredded beef, hard shell tacos with verde salsa were so delicious!!! In and out to get back on the road, too. Worth the stop in!
google avatar

Sylvia G.

Yelp
My husband said, "The food tasted amazing !" He ordered the enchiladas rancheros and it was a nice surprise as a truck stop.
google avatar

Summer R.

Yelp
Ate here twice now. Hubby is a truck driver, next to Loves. Great food, I make the best Mexican but if we on the road, here is fire! Maria is the best service, it's a little more expensive but worth it if you want a home cooked meal on the road. Stay away from drinks, way too expensive. Ask for spicy salsa, if you like spice, so good. A really good hole in the wall with a truck bath, if your truck needs a bath (not considering those services, didn't need them) and you hungry this food will satisfy
google avatar

Christine P.

Yelp
The service was great I had the Carne Asada Burrito It was big so I saved half for later. I went during lunch so it was busy I seen the plates and they serve very big portions.
google avatar

Travino C.

Yelp
For a off the road Mexican food restaurant that is attached to a truck wash. This is one of the best wet burritos I've ever had. The meat was cooked, fresh and seasoned perfectly and the service people were nice and friendly

Sean S.

Yelp
We ducked in for dinner on the way home from a long road trip. The food was tasty and the service was great. We ordered the Chile Colorado, beef flautas and enchiladas rancheros. Everything was seasoned perfectly. The flautas has a crispy light texture and was stuffed with delicious filling. The kiddos were a huge fan of the rice as well. The salsa and spicy red sauce were a great addition to the meal too. Whether you're passing through as part of a longer trip or shopping at the outlets, this is a great place for a delicious meal.
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
100 percent Delicious!!! This is true Mexican Food and we will return!! The staff is very friendly!!
google avatar

Isabel H.

Yelp
This place is legit! We debated coming in just based upon the exterior, but I would HIGHLY recommend stopping. I had the pastor tacos and it was some of the best pastor I've ever had. It was so tender and juicy and had so much flavor. All of the salsas were fresh and tasty. Absolutely phenomenal authentic Mexican food!! The service was wonderful as well. It was clear that they value their customers. There was a friendly and homey atmosphere that you only get from a family-owned restaurant. I will 100% be stopping here every time I'm passing through Barstow!
google avatar

Nina M.

Yelp
When we pulled up we felt a bit unsure as it's right in the middle of a truck washing area but fortunately for us we decided to go in. The food was great and it all got devoured. I ordered a burrito, my husband ordered fajitas and my son ordered enchiladas. My daughter ordered an avocado salad that definitely had more brown spots on it than I would have left on it but she didn't complain so we all left happy. The service was really good and the server, whose name was Octavio, was really on top of it even though he was super busy. Try this place, it's worth it. Oh, and I forgot to mention that the horchata was excellent and so big it was enough for two people! I was so happy!
google avatar

Danny G.

Yelp
Decided to check this place out and I got to say I'm glad I did. This place is a hidden gem and definitely would come back. The service is great and the food was delicious!

Citlalli S.

Yelp
Delicioso!!! Truck driver here. Thank you thank you. Is not often to have amazing food next to a truck stop. Service and food amazing!! Gracias totales a mis paisanos.
google avatar

Bob C.

Yelp
My wife and I both had the Macho Burrito and it was delicious. They make their own sauce in house and it was fantastic. We like the salsa, chips, flan and rice pudding too. The burritos were huge, so we both took home leftovers. Don't let the location scare you as it is in a truck was facility. Clean inside with an A rating and the staff was all super nice! We will be going back on our next trip to Vegas!
google avatar

Bob J.

Yelp
Great service, very friendly people, always serving food with a smile and checking on you if you need anything. I really enjoy the carne asada fries, I normally get those to go or eat inside. Good chips and salsa too. I also want to try other things on the menu but if you are a carne asada fries fan, I highly recommend this! Also close to Home so that's another plus. 5th time here now and I am posting this review!

Thomas R.

Yelp
Food was excellent. I enjoyed the Mexican music the cook was playing and the service was great. The truck stop location nearly made me not want to stop but glad I did. Very clean and pleasant inside.
google avatar

Sydney B.

Yelp
Cute place between 2 truck stops. Very clean, good food and friendly wait staff!! Definitely stop here if you're hungry for good Mexican food.

Carrie T.

Yelp
We were passing through Barstow, wanting burritos to grab quickly. We ordered Breakfast and vegetarian burritos, got them quickly and both were delicious.
google avatar

Nunie C.

Yelp
The reviews are definitely spot on! I had the Asada/Al Pastor deluxe burrito. I was only able to eat half and warmed up the leftovers the next night...... my burrito tasted even better than the first time lol I'll definitely be back if I'm in the area.
google avatar

Jasen P.

Yelp
We stopped in on our Route 66 motorcycle trip in July of 2022. The food was great and the service was outstanding! Thank you Maria!
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
Like every review said, restaurant doesn't look like much, but wow! The place was full! The food was delicious for the most part. I ordered a lengua burrito and the meat had little flavor. But my daughter has asada fries and my son had grilled chicken salad. Yep you read that right...salad. both were delicious! Give it a try, you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Yelp
Do yourself a BIG favor and don't waste your time going to a Mexican food chain restaurant. Eat at Maria's and go home completely satisfied with a great meal. Great service and nice staff. The Hungry Hardhat has spoken... So let it be said... So let it be eaten.
