Maria's Oyster Bar - Where Happy Hour Went to Die
(generously)
White Linen Night in New Orleans: the air was steamy, the linen was flowing, and our group was ready to kick things off with some sips and small bites before diving into the galleries. Since we'd already splurged on a fancy pants dinner a couple of nights prior, we were hunting for something a little easier on the wallet, but still solid.
Enter: Maria's, the shiny new oyster bar on the block, proudly advertising Happy Hour every day from 4-6 PM. Perfect, right? We made a reservation, showed up right at 4, and were ready to pounce on a dozen oysters and a round of drinks.
Plot twist: I ask our server for the happy hour menu and she hits us with, "Oh, we're not doing happy hour tonight...it's White Linen Night." What the shuck?
Let me paint the picture here: a full house of people clearly doing the exact same math we were. Everyone showed up early, looking for that sweet HH deal, only to find out they'd yanked it with zero warning. No update on the website. No email. No tiny fine print when I booked the resy. Just... no happy hour for you. Not a great look, Maria.
We stayed anyway--because we were already there and mildly hopeful, but it didn't get better.
I ordered the pimento cheese croquettes, and they came out lukewarm. Honestly, they tasted like someone whispered the word "cheddar" at them from across the room. Zero sharpness, no zing, no reason to finish them. My husband got the fries, and while they were fine, they were also fries. You can get better ones at a gas station with a deep fryer and a dream.
The little skillet, appetizer of garlic shrimp actually looked pretty good, even though they gave one skimpy piece of bread with it. One more bread was requested, my friend was offered the $6 plate of ciabatta.
Across the table, the verdict was unanimous: nothing special. Everything felt like it could be good in theory, but in practice? Totally forgettable.
To add insult to the already unhappy hour injury, our check arrived with a 3% "employee wellness" fee, added to it.
Bottom line: In a city overflowing with incredible food, there's just no reason to settle for "meh." Maria's missed the mark--from the bait-and-switch on happy hour to the bland bites, and added fees. We won't be back.
