I struggled to post this review because we've had so many great meals here. Unfortunately something here has changed and I felt obligated to point this out since I've posted several great reviews in the past.
The last THREE times we've eaten here have left us wondering what is going on. The food doesn't taste as good and the service is below average. I even think the waitress we had (last month) was stoned or drunk, definitely not right.
Last week we arrived on a Friday night and noticed immediately that the temperature in the dining room was downright hot. There was not a ton of people in there (not as many as usual) so we couldn't blame it on the crowd. The restaurant was either having issues with the AC or they had turned it up to save money. Either way, it made for quite an unpleasant dining experience. I am not usually warm but it was even too warm for me! It seemed odd that nobody made any attempt to explain or apologize. Do you remember the story the Emperor's new clothes? They pretend nothing is wrong so it isn't, right? Strike one.
When we ordered our food, we made a point (like we always do) to tell the waitress about my husband's cheese allergy. If you've read my other reviews, you know how much of a challenge that tends to be. It has not been much of a problem in the past here but twice in a row, we've had issues. This time the waitress brought out the rolls with cheese sprinkled all over them and we just looked at her. She stared back at us completely clueless...forcing us to remind her about the cheese allergy. The light bulb went on, she apologized profusely, and quickly brought new rolls. Strike two.
When our food came out, take a guess....yep, cheese all over the top of the penne pasta dish! The waitress placed the dish in front of my husband and we both just looked in dismay. We waited for her to realize but, again, clueless. I said "Tell me what's wrong with that dish." Only then did she realize that, once again, she had served cheese to the guy with the cheese allergy. Strike three.
Now I do feel the need to interject something here. I waited tables when I was younger and always resented when the kitchen goofed which negatively impacted my tip. I had more than one occasion where I wrote special instructions on the order but the kitchen did not read them. I get it and I understand the struggles servers face. That being said, I do expect my server to check the food BEFORE it is served to me! Bringing out the wrong food time and time again means either you are clueless or, worse, you don't give a rip.
So....after we rejected the cheese penne, the waitress scurried back to the kitchen and we speculate they did their best to scrape off the top to avoid tossing out the whole dish. Let me ask you a question. Where does cheese go when it melts? EVERYWHERE. My husband was up all night sick. While he was eating his meal, he was picking little pieces of cheese out of the dish and bracing himself for a long, sleepless night with cheese cramps.
I am very sad to say that Maria's is off our list. Three strikes you're out! They are always quite busy so I'm sure they won't miss us. However, we miss what it used to be. Hopefully they get it figured out soon.
