Marina Submarine - Review - Cow Hollow - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"It’s not glamorous or hip or comfortable, but we don’t really care, because the sandwiches at Marina Sub are stellar. The place has been on the corner of Steiner and Union for over 30 years and yes, you can tell. But despite some wear and tear, the simple sandwiches - everything from turkey to meatball - are huge and delicious and very no-frills, except for some special sauce. The owner is great and takes his job of making excellent lunch for the Cow Hollow people very seriously." - Taylor Abrams

The Best Restaurants In Cow Hollow - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"This sandwich shop is about as bare-bones as they come. There are just a few guys working behind the counter, a cooler full of Coke and beer, and some small tables to sit at while you wait for your order to get called. We usually come here thinking we’re taking our sandwiches to Fort Mason, but more often than not, we sit right back down at our table and eat it here because we can’t wait. We like the Atomic with turkey, pastrami, and cheese, but you can’t really go wrong with any of their combinations of meat, bread, and cheese." - taylor abrams, will kamensky

The Spicy Bella Sandwich is wild! Normally folks don't know how to tame the Franks red hots sauce, nor balance bold ingredients with mild chicken and subtle white cheese. This sandwich made by David though was an large exception. Perfectly balanced, protein packed, yet sauced enough to make everything flow. I ate half of the sandwich and was full. Then somehow my other half sandwich disappeared before my eyes. The service was exceptional as well. The order was tailored to my cravings, the sandwich makers sought after opinions on whats good, and he even offered to/ filled my water bottle. I look forward to coming back for more sandwiches. Plus their Dutch crunch isn't too crunchy or hard!!! Its very difficult to find a proper Dutch crunch roll in SF.

Google
I just tried Marin Sub Marin in San Francisco and wow – their Spicy Bella sandwich is amazing! The bread was super fresh, the flavors were perfectly balanced, and it had just the right amount of heat. You can tell they really care about quality. The staff was super friendly, and my order came out fast, which made the whole experience even better. If you’re in SF and craving a great sandwich, I highly recommend stopping by and trying the Spicy Bella – you won’t be disappointed!

Google
For $20 “sub” there should be more than 2 thin slices of turkey. This was all mayo and bread. I love Marina Subs but this makes me feel cheated and not want to go back. I shouldn’t have to pay an extra fee for 2 more slices of turkey.

Google
Delicious sandwich! The Dutch crunch was super crunchy, and the ratio of ingredients was perfect. A little pricy, but not unusual for the neighborhood.

Google
10/12/2024 @ 11:30am, note that large sandwich is available but is not shown on the menu. If you don't ask the price will be different. Bread is pre cut so a specific size may not be available. Forgot to take picture of amount of meat in sandwich. More meat would be better.

Google
Very crispy & chewy sandwich! Price a bit high but quality was amazing! They're able to offer medium size sandwich but it was still at a decent size. Highly recommend their Marina's Special! Workers were efficient. Super fast with sandwich making. Seating was minimal but it's more a to-go shop so it's expected. Parking was minimal but it's easy to find on a non-busy day.

Just moved to SF and this is already one of my fave lunch spots! The tuna melt and turkey provolone are my favorites! So so delish!!

When they said “best sandwich in San Francisco” they weren’t kidding

Yelp
I got the reunion and added jalepenos. It was SO SO good. It was also pretty huge. I had my boyfriend to get it for me so I can't speak on the ambiance or service but the sandwich itself didn't disappoint. Updated menu! July 2025.

Yelp
Hands down best sandwich in the marina, perhaps even in sf. A couple of caveats: it's pretty pricey for a standard sized meal, definitely save this trip for a special occasion! One sandwich will cost you around $18 of not more. Secondly, they are busy so order ahead if you don't want to wait as long. Prep time is still around 15-20 minutes. Third, check your order before you leave, I ordered a Coke 0 and received a Diet Coke, and us Coke 0 girls know how big of a difference that is I will be back for sure next time I'm craving a delicious sandwich for a special occasion.

Yelp
New owner but still the best sub sandwich anywhere. I drive 60 miles round trip to get the Italiano!

Yelp
Marina Submarine makes the besttt turkey bacon avocado sub I've ever had, and that's saying a lot, considering I was a Subway sandwich artist back in 2012. The dutch crunch bread is perfection and overall just a 5/5 star sandwich experience anytime I come here. So so good!
google avatar

Terran B.

Yelp
Bring your appetite because the sandwiches are HUGE! Absolutely delicious & fresh ingredients & the bread with crunchy yet soft. Great food! Busy spot, but definitely worth the search for parking.
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
One of the best sandwiches I've ever had, they are massive and full of fresh ingredients. The Dutch crunch was awesome. Parking is tough and paid on the street unless you go over a block to the neighborhood.
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
Pretty solid place, no frills ambiance. We ordered two sandos and both were solid. Service was decent as well. I probably wouldn't go out of my way, but seems like a solid neighborhood spot.

David F.

Yelp
Best place with the best taste in San Francisco love there espresso with ice cream my fav made by the owner himself!! Always my go to for subs and a snack
google avatar

Bryan J.

Yelp
Great submarine, i have gone back before for a couple options and not expensive at all!

Jake A.

Yelp
So disappointed with this place. If you want a $20 sandwich that's super messy because it's soaking in sauce and only has 1-2 slices of meat and full of vegetables, then go here. They charge $3 extra for "extra meat" and add maybe 1 slice. The meat portion is so tiny. Even Subway does better. Order from Bite Sandwiches instead where they make real sandwiches, not a pile of soggy vegetables between bread.

Joanna S.

Yelp
for a $20 "sub" there should be more than two thin slices of deli meat on this. I shouldn't have to pay an extra three dollars for one or two slices of turkey. I've always loved the spot, but this makes me not wanna go back again. The sandwich was all mayo and bread. Very disappointing and I feel like I just wasted $20. When your customers are paying $20 for a sandwich, you should put more meat on it.
google avatar

Yelp
Marina submarine makes one of the best sandwiches in the Bay Area and I've been to a lot of sandwich shops. Their marina Italian sub sandwich is the best on Dutch crunch. They toast the sandwich and it has just enough of everything without overdoing it. I'll be back

Yelp
Nudged them to a fourth star for heart and great service. I really like these guys and want to see them succeed. That said, they need to look at their menu ingredients and rebalance. I ordered the Red Balls (meatballs, provolone, onions, jalapeño, marinara) and Spicy Bella (Buffalo chicken pepper Jack cheese, jalapeño, ranch). Both sandwiches were good, had quality ingredients but the amount of sauce in the Spicy Bella was overwhelming: Buffalo sauce and ranch dressing poured out of my sandwich. Didn't have a single complaint from The Incinerator who nearly downed his meatball sub before I took a bite; it was tasty. The Spicy Bella had a delectable amount of juicy chicken. What it needed was balance and texture. I added crunchy romaine and it came to life. It was a counterpoint to the spiciness (advise less sauce & jalapeños too). I gave the owner the secret Buffalo sauce recipe. I wouldn't be surprised to see Buffalo wings make the menu - or used on the Spicy Bella. (And no, you may not have it!) Prices are a touch high ($17/$19 subs) but they don't skimp on quality ingredients. Recommend.

Yelp
I entered this store, and bought something. I suddenly got vertigo and could not walk I'd see. it is the first time this happened to me. the employee at this store was so kind, brought me the food & money change at the counter. I really wanted to call out a good gesture. thank you.

Yelp
Walking towards the Presidio and the Marina, I came across Marina Subs and saw it's been there for over 50 years. Of course I had to look it up and turns out the original owner had left but it was reopened with new owners. Looking at the photos of the sandwiches before and after, it's a night and day difference. Although the size of the sandwiches have remained the same. Looking at the menu, there's plenty of cool options and crazy combos so I decided to take a chance on the Atomic Sandwich. It had a few different meats, jalapeños, oil and vinegar and veggies. It was light on the meats and heavy on the bread. It didn't come with jalapeños, instead it was banana peppers (two completely different flavor profiles) The size of the sandwich reminded me of little luccas in SSF but I thought the overall flavor of this sandwich was lacking. I got it on sourdough roll, but unfortunately the bread didn't taste fresh. There was so much bread, it would help if they cut out some of the inside of the bread so the meats have a nice canoe to sit in. The sandwich with a tip came out to $22. I think for the flavor and quality, it wasn't something I'd order again. It wasn't the tastiest sandwich, but I think with a few minor tweaks they can get this right. The people inside were really nice and they were pumping out sandwiches really quick. If I return, I think i'll definitely go for something with dutch crunch and something that includes mayo or some kinda spread because the sandwich I got was too dry for my taste.

Yelp
Finally got to try this place for lunch and it didn't disappoint! I asked the worker their most popular sandwiches, and The Reunion was one of them. I ordered and got the sandwich within 10 minutes! First of all, it's huge for the price you pay (a little over $16). I'll be having the other half for dinner. The Dutch crunch was toasted so it was warm and crispy. The best part was the pesto and turkey plus the pepperoncini. By far one of the tastiest sandwiches that I've had in awhile. I do think they should have a better vent to help with the smokiness when they're cooking. I did end up eating there and felt like I was eating inside a kitchen. Other than that, I would come back to try their other sandwiches.

Yelp
I had marine submarine and it was really delicious Comes with homemade chicken breast, swiss cheese and all the veggies. You would love it and be full all day Recommend it.

Yelp
Good local sandwich spot. I eat a lot of sandwiches and this one is a Goldilocks spot. Not some huge sandwich you can't get through, not small portions like with one or two slices of meat. All their specialty sandwiches have been great, try to get a new one every time. Call it in, vs ordering on the app and you'll save a few bucks as there's a markup
google avatar

Darryl M.

Yelp
This submarine sandwich the Italianano and meatballs subs are delicious In fact all of their subs are sooo delicious I fell the new owners know what they doing for sure Do yourself a favor and go!!!
google avatar

Valerie G.

Yelp
Always the most fire sandwiches ! They are HUGE!! Literally they are the size of my forearm sometimes LOL. Always friendly cashiers too, have a good selection of chips to pair with the sandwiches. I believe they also sell ice cream too so I guess you can get a whole lunch treat in one visit!

Yelp
Went to Marin Subs today to see Q. He is no longer there and has retired. Asked the person at the new register "are the sandwiches still the same?", he said "yes." So we tried to order: small turkey, provolone, no onion, special sauce. Cashier was confused. We asked again, aren't the sandwiches the same? He said, "yes", again. Then asked us what kind of bread we would like. We asked "which bread is the usual bread?" He said, "the soft roll" but looked confused. Sandwiches were made by someone facing away from you toward the wall. No smiles. No warmth. They seemed genuinely annoyed we were there. Q may have been a man of few words, but he was warm to the community. He was your friend. We then opened the sandwiches when they came, lettuce is flat, not shredded. They forgot the special sauce and seemed confused when we asked for it. Turkey tastes completely different. Cheese tastes different. Bread tastes different. Avocado is chucked not sliced then. Not only are they not the same sandwiches but it is clear every single part of the sandwich has been changed. Please don't call the sandwiches "the same" when they are not. Or, please talk to Q and nail down the exact recipe and have him train your staff or make a YouTube video for all of us to learn how to make them. Otherwise, take them off your menu and just do something entirely new. Another long time customer came in while we were there who had been eating there her entire life, had the same experience, started crying and left. Q had a loving community of customers. My hope is that you take the feedback from the community and try to make Marina Subs like they should be made and the customers will bring the love back your way. But right now, you are turning everyone away. I will come back in a month and see if things improve as I am sure you all are getting this feedback every single day.

Jose R.

Yelp
Very friendly people there and great service! Fresh ingredients and generous portions. I highly recommend this place

Diana C.

Yelp
I went there for (2) submarine sandwiches. I watched how the cashier helped the sandwich maker after people paid for their food. The SAME fingers that handled the cash, cash register also made the sandwiches. No gloves were worn for food prep. The regular sandwich maker had gloves but not the cashier. Should I mention that handling money is one of the dirtiest things out there!! Besides high prices, I consider my food not very clean after watching the cashier.... I won't go back

Yelp
I had the opportunity to try Marina Submarine over the weekend, and let me tell you, you need to share one of those sandwiches with your loved ones because they are gigantic. I tried K's Special on a Dutch Crunch, and it is texturally one of the superior sandwiches I've had. The roll is crisp and soft and offers such a wonderful contrast to the fixings inside. For a pastrami sandwich, they're a little light on the pastrami itself, but it's absolutely loaded with everything else. The melted cheese, varieties on varieties of pickled peppers, and tangy sauce all make this a delicious experience. It's quite good, and I wasn't able to finish the sandwich on my own. Overall, a great spot in a great area, but I need to knock it for the dirty floors and excessively smoky room. I'll be back to try more, but perhaps at a park nearby instead of dining in.

Jenin N.

Yelp
Costumer service is A1. Super accommodating and sandwiches always hit the spot. I recommend !!

Amin M.

Yelp
I came with my friend and we bought 2 sandwiches and we split both. We got "create your own" Roast beef with cheddar cheese and all the veggies on it.. the second sandwich was Marina submarine and would totally recommend it. Great service and atmosphere! Definitely worth it.

Yelp
My Saturday side-hustle gig is nearby this little sandwich spot. Turns out is a Cow Hollow culture catch. A simple menu. The Hot Pastrami caught my eye. Three sizes to choose from and yes, medium is built for two persons or one hungry gal or guy. Ordered a small. The lovely owner is meticulous in building the sandwiches and they picture what a sammie should be. Nothing fancy, just your typical lettuce, tomato, etc. I got half of a jumbo pickle. The French bread was fresh, which is always the foundation for the meal. All-in-all just excellent! So good I will just not bring anything from home in the future and this will be my go-to Saturday spot. It's cash. Just like it should be!

Anne S.

Yelp
Used to be so good. Now it's just another sht SF sandwich shop. The bread was the whole point of the exercise, none of the ridiculous dutch crunch or a french loaf you can't even bite through. Now it falls to the ranks of those who have never known or had a real sub sandwich. Should have just closed rather than spoil the good name it had for years and years. Sometimes San Francisco really is so disappointing.
google avatar

Moose F.

Yelp
I suppose I should have walked out when I saw them putting Chipotle flavored mayo on a classic Italian sandwich. When you buy a $20 sandwich from a deli counter the expectation is a giant overflowing behemoth that gets eaten over the course of several meals. Pictured is what you get here. On top of that, I asked for regular mayo rather than Chipotle and instead they put zero mayo and for some reason triple the mustard. As is the case nearly everywhere, the original owners sold the business and the new ones have no idea what they are doing
google avatar

Winston C.

Yelp
I selected this place off of an SF Eater article about best sandwiches in SF. Big sandwich aficionado here. I'm going to leave my review in a linear order. I discovered at the cash register that they're cash only. Call me particular but I am turned off by businesses that don't take credit cards. Especially given that so many have pivoted away from cash only during the pandemic. Fortunately, my fiancé had cash. I had been deciding between here and Lucca a few blocks away (also on the SF Eater list), and had we been forced to go to an ATM to pay, probably would have shifted to Lucca. But nonetheless cash we had so we ordered. There was only one person making sandwiches so was informed it would be 20 minutes. Also was not crazy about the fact that fountain sodas do not come with free refills (they're $2). All that said, when the sandwiches were ready 15 minutes later, they were absolutely fabulous. We both got the classic submarine sandwich (me the medium, fiancé the small). Seriously the bread was to die for and they put a heaping amount of shredded lettuce (which I love) and a fair portion of meat. It was delicious. And honestly, I like big portions, but I would probably go with the small next time. It was very large and a great value. 2 sandwiches, 2 drinks, chips came out to be $38. I would encourage them to start taking credit cards. Had we not had cash, I likely wouldn't have come back. But all in all a delicious product.
google avatar

Andrew V.

Yelp
Pricy for a sandwich. Like borderline I won't come more than once a week. I like how sandwiches are assembled nicely and never sloppy. Why are the chips so expensive though

Jacob S.

Yelp
DO NOT GO HERE! I've been going here frequently since I was a child. After Q retired I was hesitant on coming back but when I did I ordered the submarine sandwich because the menu says it's off the original menu. As we all know Q made the best sandwiches so I came back expecting the same. The guy at the cash register said it was the same sandwich and bread. Bread is not the same as before and is horrible quality. Lettuce is not the same and looks like it was purchased from a pre packed package from Safeway. (Lettuce before had a big part on making the sandwiches so good) They put thick cut red unions on it and not the original white onion cut extra thin. The meat left a horrible taste in my mouth, horrible cheap quality meat cut thick. They don't even put the special sauce on it and that was what made the sandwiches so good. To top it off the sandwiches prices are wayy higher. They turned this place into a middle eastern liquor store without the liquor that serves horrible sandwiches. All around bad quality everything. Once I left my stomach started making funny sounds and when I got home I had mud butt. Liquid disaster.

Adam P.

Yelp
This is the second time I come here..Last week I came with my wife and kids and we got 4 sandwiches and this weekend we were in sf and we had to come back. Last time I had K's special and it was amazing. This time I got the Italian marines. meat portion on point, saucy and definitely filling. The size of the sandwich almost the size of my forearm. Absolutely my go to place for subs! Great service and staff, and amazing food! Keep it up.

Jalen R.

Yelp
I moved from SoCal to San Francisco in June of 2023. I've seen a number of sandwich shops and I pass by Marina Submarine everyday on my way to work. Today I was craving a sandwich and even saw a few posts about sandwiches on social media today, so I decided to stop in Marina Submarine. I've never tried a tuna melt, but it was raining today and it was calling my name. Not only was this tuna melt AMAZING, but it was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had! It's really awesome to try something for the first time and be blown out of the water! The jalapeño on this sandwich gave it a nice subtle heat and added layer of flavor. The sourdough bread was perfectly toasted. First time here and it didn't disappoint! I'm very impressed and I'll be back.
google avatar

gavyn m.

Yelp
I've now been here twice over the course of two years. Pretty sure it was different owners or it's been sold between those two times, but both sandwiches. I had were amazing. I heavily recommend this place.
google avatar

Molly W.

Yelp
I'd love to make this a regular neighborhood spot as we live close by, but we're just a bit shocked at the prices for breakfast. The menu here says $14 for a simple breakfast sandwich (just bacon egg cheese)... $19 for breakfast burrito?!? It's unfortunately priced us out of even considering it and I know it's inflation but even with that... that feels way too much for breakfast takeaway items. I mean come on.

Star G.

Yelp
WOW! I ordered the most basic cold turkey sandwich on a hard roll with *everything* and I finished thoroughly satisfied. Bread was fresh and crunchy. The insides met my insides with glee. This is my new sandwich shop. Sooo gooood!!
google avatar

Richard H.

Yelp
Not the same since Q left - used to come here all the time for a hot pastrami. i asked if everything was the same and the cashier said yes. so i ordered my hot pastrami with everything + extra special sauce. when i got home, the bread was hard as a rock. the hot pastrami was just sliced deli meat, NOT hot (could have sourced better sliced deli meat from safeway). the cheese was different, the lettuce was not shredded. i hope this works out for the new owner(s) and they look into making the sandwiches amazing again. but not going to lie, i would have made the same sandwich myself at home at a cost of $2. it would have tasted bad, but still better than what i got. [queue crying face emoji]

John D.

Yelp
I've heard a lot about this place and wanted to pay it a visit and I'm glad I did. I got Marine submarine on a Dutch crunch. Where can I start? The bread is fresh (I was told they get it delivered every morning).. fresh vegetables and they were generous with the portions. It's around $18 including tax but it's worth it in my opinion. I will def come back and try more sandwichs.. they have many good options.
google avatar

Yelp
Few things that is not the same like the older Marina Sub. The smile and kindness older gentleman is gone. Replaced by a young guy that looks very much the opposite. The good sandwich that doesn't have them over dozed it with mustard or mayonnaise. The price tag is pretty huge for one small sandwich with a bottle of coke. Almost 20 bucks! Be careful with the morning guy. You won't know what the price is until you get charged. No screen to tell you what and how much things cost. The atmosphere of good old beat up deli is also gone. Replaced by new up to date versions of the place. So this one is up to you on what you like. I like the old look place since it reminds me of my early 20's. The run down local deli is the feel of welcome home to me. The kindness gesture of someone that could be your uncle. The familiar and warmth is gone and replaced by the odd feeling of unsure linger in its place. Make you feel home sick all of sudden and you left walking out with a huge void. I don't know but the not so satisfying feeling is why I won't be coming back. Never finish my messy sandwich either.
google avatar

Ellie O.

Yelp
Finally tried this sub shop ! Delicious! The bread is insane , the smells that greet you , are alluring . The sandwich is huge , Medium is def enough for two . The owners are so nice ! Cash only .
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
4.5 stars for Marina Submarine! I stopped in recently to grab sandwiches and chips ahead of a hike in Marin and I had a great experience. Both sandwiches I ordered were really tasty (and big!) and the store had a wide variety of chips to choose from. The Turkey and Avocado was my favorite of the two sandwiches. So good. One note - the sandwiches come with their special sauce, which can leak! Best to eat the sandwiches right away vs saving for later. Also, this spot is cash only so make sure to bring some money with you or you'll have to run a block over to the nearest ATM. Not the cheapest sandwich in SF but I will return if I'm in the area, hungry and have cash!
google avatar

Miroslav B.

Yelp
The best pastrami sandwich ever I enjoyed Grate customers service Than you very much

Gee S.

Yelp
They served wow tasty sandwiches, on really great quality bread! It's nothing to look at inside but we're here for the food stupid. Friendly service, lil pricey but great quality.

Yelp
I happened to be in Cow Hollow for something and was recommended this spot for a tasty lunch. I called ahead around 12:30 on a Monday and was told it would be 20-25 mins. Luckily I was just down the block and had plenty of time to wait; I am glad I called because there were several people waiting and my sandwich was already made when I arrived! True to all the other reviews the guy making the sandwiches is a pro, and WOW those avo cutting skills... there is a LOT of avo per sandwich too. No skimping. I ordered a small turkey sub with avo, no mayo with jalapeños. I was shocked that the sub was as long as my arm!! Very excited, I finally dug in. The crazy thing is, honestly it's just an ordinary sub on the outside. The ingredients themselves are all pretty standard, but somehow something about it just made me want to keep eating and eating and I ended up demolishing the entire thing. The combination of the toasted roll, mustard, generous mound of lettuce and all the other toppings amounted to one of the best subs I have ever had. It really does live up to the boast of being the best sub in the city. I will be back if I am in the area!
google avatar

Tsoyu C.

Yelp
I will give zero stars if I could. We called in to order like we always do because Q took his time crafting the sandwiches. I went in the store and thought I was in the wrong place. When the owner told me Q retired, my heart sank. I told my family not to expect too much, but the truth is we could've gotten better sandwiches from Subway for half of the price. There's no avocado in my turkey avocado sandwiches, in fact it is a complete dripping soggy mess. Pastrami has no flavor. The satisfaction of sinking my teeth into crunchy toasted bread, tightly packed veggies, and layers of flavors, gone. I want to cry too. The new management should at least learn to make the sandwiches properly if they were to use the same name and charge the same price.
google avatar

Yelp
Since the original owner sold & left the food is not the same . No toasted sandwiches anymore . Owner of building doesn't want to install dedicated electrical breakers for that . And the deli uses Velveeta cheese instead of cheddar . That cheeses is only for spaghetti's & nachos. It looks nice & clean . They sell other things that are good . Like snacks & drinks .

Holly P.

Yelp
Meh. Stopped in to try the sandwiches under new ownership. I had been going to the original for 25 years. New owners promised the sandwiches would be the same. They are not. I hate leaf lettuce - part of the awesomeness of the original was the shredded lettuce. And the oil and vinegar. I ordered the Sub Marine but got someone's turkey with avocado and spicy sauce. Goodbye Marina subs. I will miss you.

j. g.

Yelp
Beware New owners... they turned this place into a cookie cutter sub place. No soul at all and the folks making the sandwich never made sandwiches before. The sandwich, Turkey and Swiss, the bread was ok at best lettuce was old tasting.and meat cut to thick. They also toast everything. The feeling is lost here. I will not be back. I used to drive across town for this place weekly. It's a shame that this was here since 1975 and now has succumb to the no soul of west coast sandwich making.
