The Best Mariscos Restaurants in LA

"Similar to your party trick that never fails, Maricos El Viejito has mastered one thing: making delicious aguachile. This Sun Valley strip mall spot also serves savory marlin tacos with chipotle salsa and a great tostada mixta with heaping amounts of abalone and octopus, but we still recommend sticking to the house favorite. The raw shrimp in Viejito’s aguachile comes out perfectly tender, never chewy, swimming in a fresh and acidic sauce balanced with just enough salt. Cucumber, raw onion, and creamy avocado slices bring texture, while fresh serrano chiles add a slow burn that lingers after each bite. ." - sylvio martins, garrett snyder, brant cox

Great seafood and lively atmosphere! Mariscos El Viejito is a great spot if you’re craving authentic Mexican seafood. The aguachiles and ceviche are fresh and full of flavor, and the portions are generous. The micheladas are also on point. The place can get busy, especially on weekends, and the music is loud, but it adds to the fun vibe. Service can be a bit slow at times, but the staff is friendly. Definitely worth checking out if you’re in the mood for mariscos!

Google
Small parking lot but a nice size restaurant it wasn't busy. I went there for the seafood and what I had was very tasty with a fresh flavor. Pictured below is shrimp burrito along with shrimp ceviche. Order and pay when you are done.

Mar 21, 2022 Good food, affordable prices. Ordered tacos: asada, pollo and birria. Birria was really good, asada and pollo were OK. Nice, cozy and spotless clean. Mucho gracias 👍🏻👍🏻

Google
Clean, spacious dining room. Island/coastal theme interior decor. Music sometimes live. Stopped by as I waited for a car repair. Server brings chips and salsa right away. I had two Marlin empanadas and 1 marlin taco. $10.49 + 9.5% = $11.49 plus tip. I thought I’d get one more taco but was satisfied with 1. Very good meat. Served hot. Live band went around offering performances for pay as we ate. Good food. Good service. Reasonable prices. Will be back for next car repair.

The fish tacos were really good!!

Google
I really love their shrimp empanadas here and their green sauce, so delicious! A couple other plates I usually get here is coctel de camaron or tostada de camaron cosido. The empanadas are my favorite though 😍

Brandy Vidales

Google
This is the place for aguas chiles (avocado include), the tostadas de pescado (fish) and tostadas de camaron delicious! We definitely will be back. They have been in business for 30 years.

Yelp
"Camarones a la diabla" weren't spicy at all and taste like tomato canned. The beans also taste from the can without flavor. Not to mention the shrimp came tiny like the ones you find packaged at your local market. I honestly could of done a better job at cooking, I will never be coming here again. Service was good but everything else no.
google avatar

Sayuri B.

Yelp
My first order was a take out aguachile. They are amazing I asked for not so spicy ones and they came out great I love that sauce. This last time we went we got the camarones a la cucaracha they were delicious paired with rice and beans the camarones a la plancha with salad and fries is also a great choice. The staff treats you good and is accommodating to your eating needs which I thing is so important. This is a whole in the wall place with cozy vibes. I'd recommend it to anyone in the area looking for some home cooked style food. Love the art inside the place, it definitely portrays life by the ocean.

Yelp
Ordered carry out after a long day of settling in to a new home and boy was I not disappointed! I ordered with my standards low as it was close to closing on Easter Sunday and I've never tried this place. Once I arrived I was greeted by very kind staff and was amazed when my order came with a package of tostadas to enjoy! I'm so used to restaurants being stingy and only giving you one tostada per order that getting a bag has to be highlighted! Sea Food options like the Jaiva, Fish, Camarón or mixed all tasted extremely good to me and my wife not to mention fresh! The octopus in the mix was so soft and tender which made me happy and my wife enjoyed their michelada mix at home and loved it! Truly a Sea Food Gem Try them out! Extra stars if I could! 10/10

Yelp
Large portions, quick n friendly service. There was a live music group playing customer's request.

Yelp
The food was great! But the presentation of the food could have been better or bigger, compared to other restaurants I've been to. Also, we received a whole bag of tostadas, just funny. Not sure if this is their way of chips? My fish tostada was very well made and didn't require additional condiments such as lime or salt. I did order an octopus tostada since the first 2 fish tostadas weren't fulfilling. Was the food great yes. Was the customer service great, well sure. But I will not come, back.

Yelp
Bomb aguachiles , empanadas de camarón, shrimp cocktail... !!! Im usually not a big fan of michelada but here they taste so good. Love coming here , lowkey spot

Yelp
The best Aguachiles in the SFV, has been my favorite for over 20 years!! The shrimp empanadas are really good as well as their Micheladas!!

Yelp

Yelp
this place still slaps. most of the bad reviews are for the "bad service". but with an aguachile that good, you can slap me in the face before serving it to me and i'll still be happy.

Melissa G.

Yelp
Bad customer service, they are always with unhappy faces, don't even want to ask for napkins because there already looking at you weird, there food is not great like it was about 15 years ago, I think anyone can make there regular Shrimp Ceviche, ingredients are very obvious no special ingredients, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, cilantro and lime salt,,,, there ambiance is ok just people that have been going there for a while because there nothing better in this area, if you really want to eat Mariscos you have to take a drive out to LA to eat bomb ceviche, I just rather make it at home if I have time and don't feel like driving out to Mariscos Choiy,,, And by the way don't be amazed because they give you a bag of open Tostada's that does not cut it for me!!!!
google avatar

Jo E.

Yelp
I've never ordered anything off their menu other than their Aguachiles. They have the best Aguachiles in the San Fernando Valley. I've been coming here for years and this place never fails. Micheladas are also good.

Lucy E.

Yelp
This is my go to when it's hot....Ceviche de pescado is the best here so are the aguachiles. When it's cold the 7 mares is perfect, it always hits the spot. I also recommend the cazuelada, it is so good.

Wendy S.

Yelp
The guy that works here always has a attitude my husband went in to eat and he was throwing and slamming things like he was mad. But they do have good micheladas .
google avatar

Brianda R.

Yelp
Their agua Chile is the best! Get it spicy with avocado however, their tacos are not worth the price for what it is. We got some tacos plain for 2.50$ but they looked like 1$ tacos

Paul G.

Yelp
Great seafood recommend for take out ambience is not for everyone. Parking is bad but the food makes up for it shrimp soup is good and all cocktails are great. My favorite is the aguachile you can have spicy or non spicy but if you like non spicy then what's the fun in it.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great hole in the wall in Sun Valley. Service is quick and attentive even on a busy Sunday. The guy with the braces is always running around and serving what seems to be the whole restaurant. I always tip him well, he does a great job. The aguachiles here are very good as is the tostada mixta and the ceviche de pescado. It's not the best Mariscos ever but it's really good for the area and the prices are okay. They charge you one dollar extra for avocado but the menu depicts the items coming with avocado already and shows no additional price info for it being added. No biggie. Just noticed it on the receipt and thought that was weird. Anyway I would definitely say to come and get your mariscos fix here if you're in the area. You must have a michelada to accompany your meal. Oh!!! And I love that they give you the whole packet of tostadas so you don't have to be bugging or waiting for more!! And they have my favorite tostadas here!! The Orange El Paraíso ones!

Paola L.

Yelp
Very good aguachiles Big variety of seafood. Everything is good but aguachiles Stan out

Yelp
We got sick eating here. My girlfriend is literally in excruciating stomach pain. My campechana was watery and only had like 4 shrimps. She ordered the aquachiles and like them however thinking back she also said shrimp portions were small. The restaurant seemed dirty/ unsanitary the services was whatever. I'm never going back

Eric E.

Yelp
Honestly I've lived in the area for many years and never noticed this place was here. The plaza that it is located in is kind of in a random spot so if you didn't pay attention you wouldn't see it. The restaurant itself has a very welcoming home vibe to it. I ordered the shrimp cocktail which was pretty good and it was actually served in a cocktail glass unlike other places. My only hope is that they add just a bit more of the cucumber and avocado to it. It would taste more proportional in my opinion.
google avatar

Anna F.

Yelp
The best aguachiles spot in the Valley. Hands down! They also have a pretty bomb shrimp cocktail. Decently priced and very fast service. Very happy with them!
google avatar

Judy C.

Yelp
The aguachiles are my favorite, we tried their shrimp empanadas and those were a hit!

Yelp
Mariscos el Viejito is known for their aguachile and seafood (mariscos) soups I was told. I also watched the tables order the aguachile. On Instagram, it was the one photo that everyone posted tagging the restaurant. It looks similar to the delicious aguachile I've tasted at La Vero's in Oxnard. You also have the option of tasting it as a tostada. Today, I wanted to taste their taco de marlin, gobernador (shrimp tacos), shrimp empanada, and tostada de pescado (fish ceviche). I didn't order aguachile because I had it pretty recently at my go-to seafood spot in the Downtown LA area and I could not handle the heat. According to the restaurant, they are able to adjust the heat to mild. Good to know for next time. I loved the taco de marlin which is not an easy taco to find in Los Angeles. It was a satisfying taco with handmade tortillas. It was better than the taco de marlin that I tried recently at a seafood/produce market in Mazatlan. The shrimp empanada that some people here are raving about was forgettable and a little burned. I've had better shrimp empanadas in North Hills at "Mariscos La Isla: Estilo Nayarit." The tostada de pescado was no different than I've tried elsewhere. I would need a side-by-side comparison to know the difference. The only other places I've had this taco is at Coni'Seafood (West LA/Inglewood locations), Cheko El Rey Del Sarandeado in Long Beach, Mariscos Mazateño in Tijuana, Cabo San Lucas, and Puerto Vallarta. You must get the horchata. It is probably the best I've had in LA. The service could be more attentive as I waited and waited for my check and had to ask for water once I finished my horchata, but there was only 1 server. So I get it. I'll definitely be back to try more next time I'm in the area or if I'm in the mood for tacos de marlin.

Yelp
I read the reviews before going and it seemed like a good Mexican restaurant, however, in my opinion it was not. I ordered a few things to try out their menu. I ordered a mojarra plate with French fries and salad. The fish wasn't fresh, it seemed to have been warmed up again. Salad was ok and French fries were good no salt nor seasoning was added. I ordered shrimp empanadas and I will give it a thumbs down. It didn't have whole shrimp it was almost as if they make the shrimp as a mashed potato texture. The shrimp cocktail was ok, my bf liked it but I wasn't a big fan. Ordered 1 mojarra plate, shrimp cocktail, 3 small shrimp empanadas and 3 carne asada tacos with rice and beans. Total was $62, in my opinion they are overpriced and their food isn't authentic Mexican food.
google avatar

Tiffany D.

Yelp
My mother loves/obsessed over their shrimp aguachiles. For being a hole in the wall spot I feel the price is really steep for their aguachiles $17-19. They do come with tostadas. Usually order to go BC of the area and it's so far. but i definitely say it's well worth it being the best shrimp Aguachiles you can buy! Also recommend their shimp empanadas, thin and crispy with moist shrimp filled centers. \ I had the Shrimp a la diabola (chipotle sauce shrimp) It wasn't too spicy, the sauce was light and good, very large serving so it would be good for sharing. comes w/ rice. I don't recommend the tap water, dosen't taste filltered. there's usually parking but i always do take out so not very sure for dining in. good service They recently re did the seating, frankly i miss the booths (from that one time i dined in) now they have various dining tables.

Yelp
DELICIOSO!!! Food and service was great. They also had good options for kids. My favorite were the aguachiles.

Adrian B.

Yelp
Cravings for mariscos was fully satisfied! From the start, the drinks, tostadas, and importantly, the salsa were all good. (Something most mexican restaurants lack.) Oysters were fresh. The fish and shrimp with sauces are fantastic! Had to try the Aguachiles. One of the best ones i've had. Overall, fantastic authentic experience!

Kevin G.

Yelp
Hidden gem in the valley ! Great customer service and their food is always freshly made at all times. I'm a regular here I can't stay away from their Micheladas and fish tacos !! Great music and overall environment 5/5

Adrian M.

Yelp
This is my go to spot for aguachiles! They're bomb and spicy and their lemon isn't watered down. One thing though that upset me is that their to-go portion is very small and the same price as the one you get when dining in. They need to fix this but other than the portion the flavor is great.
google avatar

Nancy N.

Yelp
Daughter wanted octopus. Was close by and stopped by. You arrive and you are given a bag of tostadas and spicy salsa. My daughter ordered a tostada with octopus only, she didn't want any veggies in it. Just lemon and octopus. I didn't think they could make it since lot of places its pretty much all mixed in already. Not here. The tostatda came as ordered and she was a happy camper. Big chunks of octopus. I ordered a platillo de octopus and shrimp on the griddle. it came with a side salad and rice along with hand made tortillas. It was very, very good. It kept this fat girl very happy. The portions are pretty big. I did have to order lots of lemon on the side but all in all it was very good. I didn't think by the look on the outside that i would get the kind of food i did. Will definitely come back.
google avatar

Marlen B.

Yelp
Oh my gosh!!!! Best mariscos ever! I don't like aguachile and I had theirs and it was really delicious! Not too tangy or spicy. I also had the Marlin empanada which was also bomb! Absolutely recommend to check this place out!

Jamie V.

Yelp
By far the worst customer service. The guy taking orders is clearly miserable working there such bad attitude when taking orders. Besides that, I've always been a lover of their mariscos unfortunately it's getting worse with time. The food is slowly losing its sazón. Don't bother ordering the fried mojarra because they cook it with a lot of garlic its overpowering. Hopefully they get it together.
google avatar

Maria V.

Yelp
I need to find a new seafood restaurant here in the Valley! Any suggestions? Im going yo keep my comments yo my self! Don't recommend this place! Use to be good not anymore!!!
google avatar

Brenda O.

Yelp
First And last time going here, I ordered the aguachiles to go, paid 20 bucks for it and when I got home they didn't even fill them up all the way, they were almost no shrimp just pure cucumber and to top it off the aguachile was not even spicy at all, no taste to it whatsoever and also what kind of seafood place doesn't have chips?? I guess they don't make any ‍
google avatar

Antonio D.

Yelp
One of the best aguachiles spots I've been too! Definitely top 5! Shrimp empanadas are delicious as well! Make a stop if your in the valley!
google avatar

E H.

Yelp
Botana Mixta is what I order and it is flavorful, without a doubt, one of the best I have tried.
google avatar

Karrn K.

Yelp
stars are for the empanadas de camaron they are the ones with cheese pricey but mighty and tastey at 2.25 a pop definitely need 5-6 to fill up if you're hungry or 4 if not so hungry garlic shrimp was bland overcooked and way too oily and gucks tasting i would not recommend ps tip shrimps taste and have most flavor with shell while cooking boiled shrimp is not al mojo de ajo
google avatar

Manny V.

Yelp
This is my favorite place anywhere to get Aguachiles. They're spicy, made to order and always hit the spot!
google avatar

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
Great place! Great food great drinks great service! Had the aguachiles and they were amazing. The casuelita is amazing as well.
google avatar

Isabel m.

Yelp
This is my favorite place for aguachiles, I drive all the way from Santa Clarita just to enjoy delicious seafood. They need to have help as far as service.
google avatar

Xo B.

Yelp
Love this place very authentic been there 3x in the last week! Super fresh mariscos and great flavor!!
google avatar

Brenda R.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite place for aguachiles!!! They always taste heavenly!!! Just thinking about them as I'm writing this review is making my mouth watery lol all their food is delicious but this has to be the #1 spot in the valley for aguachiles no doubt! The empanadas are also exquisite! Service is always attentive and the restaurant is always clean. I've been coming to this place since I was a little girl and it is my favorite in the valley! If you haven't tried this place you are definitely missing out!
google avatar

Victoria A.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, Great Good, and Good Prices =D I love going here for their delicious seafood dishes.
google avatar

Jazmin V.

Yelp
The agua chiles are always bomb the waiter is very nice and humble. We go at least every other weekend. Prices are a little high but seems fair due to the fact that it's sea food
google avatar

Adali M.

Yelp
I'm allergic to shrimp so I'm usually very cautious when it comes to seafood but I couldn't resist having the ceviche de pescado when I came here with my family. It was so fresh and delicious!!! And I didn't die! Phew! I also had the birria that they serve on the weekends and I was in heaven
google avatar

Amy A.

Yelp
Ordered door dash last seemed clue less I ordered empanadas rip off! No shrimp at all they were literally just masa what a disappointment

Arlene S.

Yelp
This was one of my favorite restaurants in the Valley. The food is good, but I notice they give less shrimp every time I go. Today My husband bought 3 cazuelitas to go and they gave us less than 10 shrimps on each cazuelita. So not worth the price anymore. If you go to Mariscos El Viejito be prepare for their high prices and No shrimp.
google avatar

Gabby D.

Yelp
Let me start by saying they have great customer service from what I experienced. I have yet to try their aguachiles but I will sure be back for them. When I first walked in and looked at the menu I felt the prices were a but high so I just ordered to go. I ordered 2 tostadas de pescado/Ceviche/fish lol. I didn't expect much but woah, what they served me seemed more like 3 tostadas worth of fish in a bowl and plenty of tostadas. The tostadas were about $4.39 each but we'll worth the price. I will be back and I will sure update this review with my next experience with their food and customer service. Keep up the great work!

Jerry R.

Yelp
Heard this place had the best aguachiles in the san fernando valley. I gave them a try and was extremely dissapointed. The quality was less than average and the prices where out of this planet. Also tried their so called empanadas! Took a bite and it was only maza. At that point i just decided to put this on the books and call it a FAIL. Not worth the money or the food!!
