A place to sit and think while I sip and eat. The nib and paper await patiently for my attention while my eyes and hands slowly carve up the freshly baked French pastries, and slowly pick at the side dish of lox and colorful pickled vegetables. All the while a small, brown mug with a mosaic tile pattern contains hot, black coffee - its steam wafting continually in my peripheral vision.
The old farm garage with its double-door barn opening, painted in a fresh and bright French white, and the worn concrete floors revived with a burnt summer salmon hue of paint - all provides an enhanced environment to create as well as enjoy the morning's first hours. The croissants will take the Parisian traveler back to their days sitting in a back alley French cafe, but the real delight to any Santa Rosa visitor is their "Crebble" (think of a sugar bun).
The first tantalizing bite into the sugar dusted crust will deceive the eyes - at first glance it appears there might be an overabundance of sugar, but with each chomp of the jaws an explosion impacts the tastebuds as the eater realizes it's a wonderful and delicate balance of sugar with a buttery crust. And after the sugar is washed away after a few seconds, the mind turns its attention to an unexpected entrance of a rush of richness with each bite; a pastry looking and feeling so light, it contains a hidden reservoir of delightful fat which delights the mind and inspires its imagination.
Finally, as the satisfied writer cleans up his mess of pastry crumbs and snowflakes of surgar across his table, the glass of Berkey filtered water is a much appreciated and the proper way to reset his pallet and head back out into the world.
