The Best New Restaurants in Los Angeles According to Eater Editors, July 2025 | Eater LA

"Bar Avoja, a new Roman-inspired cocktail lounge from acclaimed chef Evan Funke and Giancarlo Pagani, the managing partner of Mother Wolf Group, has landed in the short-lived former Mars cocktail bar space, tucked behind Mother Wolf. At the bar, Funke serves a menu influenced by handheld Roman street food, alongside folded and thin-crust pizza and cocktails. Frittatina di carbonara is filled with spaghetti swirled with guanciale, black pepper, and egg, while the puffy, folded Portafoglio is topped with oxtail meatballs and braised greens. Cocktails, wine, and mocktails are available to pair with Funke’s cooking at the reservations-only lounge. — Rebecca Roland, editor, Eater Southern California/Southwest" - Matthew Kang

The 10 Hottest Cocktail Spots in Los Angeles

"Mars opened directly behind Mother Wolf in January 2024 but isn’t affiliated with the restaurant. Find a posh indoor-outdoor space, a carefully curated wine list, and cocktails that start at $20. The Apollo, shaken with Bacardi 8, pineapple rum, lime, crème de banane liqueur, and banana foam, is particularly noteworthy. Mars is open to the public, but rare spirits can only be held on-site for members shelling out $5,000 per year." - Mona Holmes, Rebecca Roland, Eater Staff

Mars Review - Hollywood - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Mars is a hidden cocktail lounge in Hollywood that wants to be a private members club. It’s mysterious as it is expensive, but fan away the cloud of exclusivity surrounding this place and you’ll realize it’s just a tiny room with sofas to drink on. Mars is tucked away directly behind Mother Wolf. The businesses aren’t related, but both share an affinity for the color red. If Elmo bought a Victorian estate with his Sesame Street residuals, it’d look like this place: red velvet couches, red rugs, and entire swaths of wall draped in red curtains. If you don’t care to dish out $5,000 for Mars’ annual membership—which includes access to their rare spirits collection and a personal liquor cabinet with your name on it—you can still stop by for a solid martini. You’ll need to reserve one of their couches, though, which are usually available on their website for same-day booking. Once 10pm rolls around and the DJ shows up, Mars goes from quiet lounge to miniature club, so book later if you’re looking for a party. Or maybe show up early and pace yourself with the drinks because they’re equally strong and pricey." - Sylvio Martins

LA’s New Restaurant Openings - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Mars is a hidden cocktail bar behind Hollywood’s Mother Wolf that’s red and mysterious like the planet. If the fancy $20 cocktails here—like the Belluci with mezcal, basil, and strawberry–black pepper syrup—aren’t enough of a splurge, Mars also gives you the option to purchase a “membership” for a measly $5,000 per year, which includes access to a private locker and the bar’s collection of rare spirits." - Sylvio Martins

I dined at Bar Avoja and had a wonderful time! Charlie who was on staff, made us feel so welcome. Everyone who worked at Bar Avoja was genuinely excited. Long story short, carbs are heavenly, but they're more heavenly here! The dishes are so tasty!! So many dishes have a different spin from Chef Funke's other restaurants. I really loved everything I had and am excited to come back and try more. I thought the Chef had perfected his focaccia before at Mother Wolf, Funke and Felix... BUT, he made a 2.0 version (sold here only), and it took my breath away. The bread pulls apart. I repeat it pulls APART. It's better than sliced bread. And there is a holy moly amount of cheese on top. I'm all about it. Ok, other things... be mindful of the seating here. It's more 'speakeasy' bar style seating. No dining tables. You'll likely be in a velvet chair, sinking into it. Enjoy it. It's enveloping. Parking can be tricky here. Take time to find parking. No surprise... it's all metered or paid parking lots. Or one can always valet! Enjoy the experience! 🍝

Bar Avoja is a dark, sexy bar tucked away behind Mother Wolf. I stopped in for a quick drink while waiting for my dinner party to arrive at Mother Wolf. The service was friendly and the drink delicious. I ordered the Morso Di Vita, a cocktail combining Grey Goose, Chinola Passion Fruit, tomato, basil and lemon. The cocktail came with a hefty price tag - $28. I’ll definitely be back to explore the food at Bar Avoja.

Just not enough food options here. I know it’s a bar but the food was mediocre in what they have. It’s in the back of mother Wolfe which has great food so doesn’t make sense. The decor is nice though.

Super cute cocktail lounge tucked away inside of Mother Wolf. Reservations are easily made online. They're only open Thursday-Saturday from 8pm-2am. Great spot to night cap after having a fantastic meal at Morher Wolf!

I once had an unforgettable evening at Mars Hollywood, dining with the family of Albert Einstein's ex-wife. My date for the night was none other than Teyana Taylor, whose charm and energy made the experience even more extraordinary. The conversation was a blend of history, science, and personal anecdotes, mixed with reflections on the tragic losses of icons like Pop Smoke, PnB Rock, and Kobe and Gigi Bryant. Their legacies sparked deep discussions about life, community, and resilience. It was a surreal evening—a mix of past, present, and future—that I’ll carry with me forever. 🍭🍬🍑

Really one of the best clubs in Hollywood. The clientele is better than the rest in the area due to the exceptional service and treatment. Everything else is on par or +.

Love mars. Layla is the best DJ and Melroze is my favorite promoter. Always a cool spot and usually hollywood frequenters come here for a drink.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful new bar!!! Was surprised at how congenial and elegant the whole experience was, given how cool the spot and crowd is. For a more sophisticated evening, combining a good looking high end crowd with top notch service (thanks Ethan!!!) this is your spot. As a Hollywood Hills native, born and raised right off Mulholland, I can attest this is one of the best spots for high end locals in the last decade. If you want small children being treated as such in a low rent district environment akin to a factory, many Hollywood options. If you want a classy experiencez and intend to spend and behave accordingly, this your spot. Note to venue: please don't change anything!!!!
