Argentina: Restaurants Tucked Away in Buenos Aires

Marti

"Chef Germán Martitegui, who is well known thanks to his role as a judge on MasterChef, has given his cuisine a complete makeover, but one which is the complete opposite to the traditional Argentinian taste for meat. This is showcased via his “We do not kill animals” maxim and a 100% vegetarian menu (with vegan options) in this restaurant in the prosperous Recoleta district of the city. This bright and relaxed eatery occupying the former interior garden of a house is always full and comes as a pleasant surprise thanks to its casual atmosphere and discreet street access – the outside gives no inkling of what’s inside! Once you’ve rung the bell, you are escorted to a striking dining room with large picture windows and plenty of vegetation. There are no tables here; instead, you eat at the central kitchen counter, enabling you to see how dishes are grouped by ingredients (humita, corn crisp and cumin meringue; chori, bao and magic; puff pastry and peach). Marti also grows its own wild mushrooms here." - Michelin Inspector

This place is a wonderful vegetarian restaurant. The physical space is a large bar with the chefs cooking right next to you. The space is a glass space capsule inside garden walls. The experience was just a great evening. The reviews say the staff is unfriendly and we found the opposite. It was a fun evening with good laughs and enjoyable vegetarian food that is very creative. They have a meat locker, which is actually bags of mushrooms. Also open for lunch.

The food was incredible! The staff was amazing! Highly recommend the watermelon /goat cheese salad , the veggie burger! Though was not sure if you could have ice cream with leaves, it was surprisingly delicious and fresh!

What a lovely evening. The staff was super friendly. It's an open kitchen, and you can witness one of the best Chefs in Argentina, German, leading the team, plating, welcoming the guests. I'm surprised by the culinary experience. We took the 8 steps degustation menu. The cheese souffle, the humita and the ceviche were my personal favorites. Each wine fits the flavours so smoothly. Great job. What surprises me the most is that I have the stigma for vegetarian restaurants, like a classic Argentinian that's a meat lover. I would strongly recommend every meat lover to try this place. I think that the vegetarian tag is not as fair as the signature food tag. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

Marti – Disappointing Experience Without the Chef From the moment we arrived, the staff seemed unmotivated and lacked the passion one would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. There was a sense of disorganization, as though leadership was missing, and the team was just going through the motions. This lack of energy set the tone for the evening and extended to the food, which felt overly prepped and uninspired, with no creativity or finesse on display. The absence of Chef German, who was on vacation, seemed to further impact the overall experience. From the start, there was confusion with the menu. We were eager to try the 8-course menu but were strongly encouraged to opt for the 4-course menu instead. This felt strange, almost as if the kitchen staff preferred to take the easier route that evening. The bread options were the highlight of the meal, offering a great variety and setting high expectations for what was to come. Unfortunately, the main dishes and desserts did not live up to this promise. For the mains, we trusted the waiter’s recommendation and selected the mushroom shawarma for two, a dish we had seen featured on both the Michelin Guide website and the restaurant’s Instagram as a beautifully layered, grilled shawarma-style creation made entirely of mushrooms. What arrived, however, was far from that—simple pan-fried mushroom pieces served with pita bread for stuffing, lacking any shawarma-like spices or complexity. It was extremely underwhelming. The ricotta gnocchi with spring greens was another main dish we tried, but it was disappointingly bland and lacked any memorable flavor. Among the other courses, the humita with cumin meringue was overly sweet, missing the balance needed to make it enjoyable. On the positive side, the roasted watermelon with goat cheese was the best dish of the evening. The strawberry juice elevated the flavors, balancing the sweetness of the watermelon with the tanginess of the goat cheese and creating a genuinely enjoyable and well-thought-out dish. While the restaurant boasts a stylish and modern interior, the atmosphere and food did not match its aesthetic. Perhaps the experience would have been different with Chef German present, but based on our visit, we cannot recommend Marti for those seeking a memorable culinary experience

The prix fixe was totally worth it. Amazing space. Amazing service. Amazing food. The staff was SO friendly and SO thoughtful. They really tried to cater to our experience based on the few cues they perceived from us. 10/10 will not disappoint.

We were looking forward to amazing vegetarian creations at MARTi, and we were not disappointed. The bread appetizers (I had the brioche) were perfect! We had the cheese souffle and mushroom shawarma as entrees, and both were outstanding! We wished we could have sampled other dishes, but that was not possible with the prix fix. The avocado, mango, and white chocolate dessert was a home run. We loved the atmosphere. The staff was a bit too "serious" for my US personality, but definitely not unpleasant. Our only complaint was the very long wait for our desserts, the check, and getting someone to take payment. It seemed that once dessert was served, we couldn't get anyone's attention. Perhaps better staffing would help with that problem.
