10 Must-Try Restaurants in the San Jose Area | Eater

"It’s taken more than 20 years for this fast-casual Japanese noodle restaurant to make it from Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, to Silicon Valley, but the wait finally ended this spring at Westfield Valley Fair. Marugame, which operates more than 1,000 eateries on four continents, offers a wide variety of sauces, broths, tempura, and toppings for an endless menu of combinations. It also has signature noodle dishes like the crowd-favorite Tan Tan, with spicy sesame chili broth, ground spicy soy meat, and bok choy." - Vox Creative

Went for dinner on a Friday night and have to wait in the queue for about 10 mins which is okay. Good selection of udon noodles at very reasonable prices along with a good variety of tempura side dishes. The portion is filling even for a regular serving and the taste of freshly made udon noodles definitely makes a difference. This restaurant totally justifies why it is popular especially with the younger generation.

Google
Fast and tasty food, I can’t complain. Went there on the weekend during dinner time and it seemed super busy. There was a line outside with like 10 or so people in it. Nevertheless we waited in it and it shrunk quite quickly. Ordering is quite optimized as you go through the flow chart of getting your food. Quick to order, get the food, and sit. Got the curry option and it was yummy. Also got the fried toppings too and it was also yummy. It was quite enjoyable yes.

Google
We got the udon but realized those too thick noodles are not my cup of tea. Everything was okay-okay for me. I wouldn’t go there again. Good vibe though. There might be line so when you come you might have to wait for 5-10 minutes.

Google
My soup was bland and the udon was on the soggier side. We came here on a not so busy Monday. Perhaps it's a volume issue as they pre cook everything ahead of time for QSR. We would of expected a chain from Japan to be much better in quality.

Google
Wow, how did this place get even better? So well-run that Gordon Ramsay would come and exclaim this is how you run a restaurant!!....The best eating out experience in NorCal ever! Came here for a date night and feel very buzzy-happy. Everything so smooth, everyone so kind and courteous, how fast it became our turn despite the golden time, the price of food in this era in Sillicon Valley and then the quality and flavor for this price?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Perfectly cooked noodle, deep-flavored soup, generous potions, no-fuss with customizing, and maybe the workers are treated well? They are so respectful and dilligent... Oh and the ambience... I especially love love love the mural! So hip and so Bay Area and yet so Japan..... just perfect! Oh do yourself a favor and order tan tan. It's die for......

Wow Marugame Valley Fair is a business done right!! We've been here quite a few times already but it was my parent's 1st time since they're just visiting. Still the same fresh and delicious food as always, amazing staff and superb customer service!! They suffered a power outage when we were about to pay. They were nice enough to let us eat first and give us the option come back and pay later when the power comes back on. They said if the power is still out, then we can just leave. After an hour, we were done eating and the power came back on, all the other patrons had left already but we were fully ready to pay our bill as we should. After going up to the register, the manager told me that they really appreciate our business and they were sorry for the power outage experience today. So don't worry about the bill this time, it's on them. Wow! What amazing customer service! A business offering a high quality product and willing to take a huge loss for the sake of customer experience! Where can you find businesses like this nowadays?! They definitely made a strong impression on us with this kind gesture and a loyal customer they surely gain today. I truly appreciate the generosity and the hard work of all the staff working there. May the Lord bless the heart of each and every one of these amazing people and let their business prosper!

Google
Food tastes really good, but I will definitely visit more often if curry nikutama is served with rice. Looking forward to the future menu 🤩

Google
⭐️⭐️⭐️=Standard (1-Avoid, 3-Standard, 5-Can't Miss!) Lots of reviews rave, and I guess if you're comparing this against other udon places in the Bay, sure, it's a solid bet, but is it really 5 stars compared to other offerings even in the mall? The udon is a good sized portion, and fairly priced, but if you want any accoutrements like tempura you're going to easily get above $20 for a quick meal. I give it a "standard" rating because you get a good deal and it's what you'd expect from a fast, casual noodle spot.

Yelp
I've been to marugame many times. It's bomb. It's affordable. The tempura stuff is usually good and tastes fairly fresh. Tried their newer option the creamy tonkotsu broth udon and it was really creamy and flavorful. The chashu was also really good. Honestly you can't go wrong with any of the options. Overall def will be back for my udon fix next time I'm in the area

Yelp
My first time here was a few months ago. I went on a whim being on a weekday to try it out since it wasn't so busy. I've been craving udon for the longest and I will say that they helped me curb my crave. For my future reference, I'll just stick with the udon and ask for extra beef. The tempura was just a bit too heavy for me.

Yelp
This Marugame location at Valley. Fair really hits the spot when you want a quick bite of hot udon noodles. They're located on the 2nd floor, next toAlamo Drafthouse Cinema and across from Ramen Nagi. Don't worry if you see a line, because it moves fast. I've seen stanchions set up out front (and along the will around the corner) anticipating huge crowds lining up for the place. Honestly, I have never seen that many people lining up outside. It's nothing like the line for Ramen Nagi. I noticed they completely revamped their menu compared to my last visit. They build your bowl in a similar assembly line fashion to the one at Chipotle. I had the Creamy Broth udon ($14.65) and my daughter had the Nikutama udon ($13.49). We also added veggies ($2.99), plus sliced green onions & tempura flakes (no extra charge). The udon here is always good, never too mushy. The Creamy Broth udon is good if you want a tonkatsu style bowl. There sliced pork chasu were decent thickness. And you get a whole egg! You have to be in the right mood for the Nikutama, since it leans on the sweeter side. I like how they have a self serve water dispenser, so you never have to bother staff for refills. There's plenty of seating inside, and a few out the outside (along the walkway leading to the parking garage). The staff is very quick to wipe clean tables that have been vacated. We try to sit outside since the music is always cranked up too loud for sitting inside. It is way too loud to hear what the staff is asking you when you're ordering your food. And it's too loud to have a conversation when seated indoors. I don't know why they have to set it so loud. After you're done eating, you bus your own tray by taking it to the tray return area at the back. There's some cool wall art inside. All the Marugame locations I've been to are decorated this way.

Yelp
Tried Marugame Udon after deciding not to wait for a ultra-trendy ramen place a stone's throw away. It was a great choice. MU is a super-decent udon house in the mall. After watching the good folks behind the counter ladel that glorious broth, I decided to give them a try. It was a very good decision. Having spent my youth eating at several noodle houses in Japantown SF, I have developed a good sense of what is good. MU is good. It starts with the broth. It can't be too watery or too salty. I could drink that broth life coffee; it is so good. The noodles are next. Udon noodles need to be thick, soft but it with a little bit of density. Again, MU succeeded. Add to that the Kakuni Chashu, soft-boiled egg & finely chopped green onions and it was a bowl of heaven. I now have a Udon place in the mall. Their fast-casual environment was clean, organized and orderly. If you are looking to satisfy a noodle craving, MU is the spot. Now for the pics.

Yelp
Love the calamari drink, very refreshing. Kaki Udon is the basic one with broth. Then ordered tempura: squid, sweet potato, big chicken & shrimp. All were very good, not overly fried. The staff here is very efficient and helped with putting the plates on the tray away. Kudos to their hard work. Also the most friendly staff of all the Marugame I have been to: SF, Oahu, San Ramon, Taipei. Will come again. Parking at Valley Fair was free first 2 hours and $3/hour there after. I was there for over 4 hours and only $6! So affordable.

Yelp
Came here once when they first opened and wasn't a big fan of the broth back then. But this time I was pleasantly surprised--the menu has more variety now, including rice options and more fried sides. We ordered the Nikutama Udon and the Gyudon, both labeled as "most loved," plus a fried chicken cutlet. Everything was tasty and the prices were very reasonable. Way better than my first visit. Would definitely come back again!

Yelp
Flavourful, fast, and filling udon. Efficient conveyer belt serving system like Subway minimizes wait times - you order and self serve your add-ons at the counter, then immediately get your finished order at checkout. Highly recommend the Nikutama udon - it's their signature udon dish and has Japanese beef gyudon, a soft-boiled egg, and a creamy, rich broth. The potato croquette side I got was smaller and more bland than expected.

Yelp
I usually get the Curry Udon Nikutama which is yummy, but is on the sweeter side. It is definitely on the heartier side, but surprisingly I don't feel that heavy from eating it. The good thing about this location is that you can walk around the mall to aid digestion. I've also tried the Tonkotsu here, but I found it to be bland and would rather get it at Ramen Nagi. My boyfriend got the Kitsune Udon which he liked and the tofu skin was good! I liked it too and it's a good option if you don't want meat in your dish. The items are reasonably priced, but you could easily spend $20+ on a meal dependent on the tempura items you get. I limit myself to the croquette, but the shrimp and veggie tempuras are also really good. Another positive about Marugame is that the line moves fast. Although there can be long lines, the restaurant is efficient so customers don't wait too long.

Yelp
This Marugame is located in the mall at Westfield Valley Fair. It can be easily accessed if you park in the 2nd floor of the parking structure. Parking there does incur cost after some time - I paid $3 in the 2 hours I was there. I came on a Friday evening and it was packed! The tables were filled and there was a line to order. Luckily, the turnaround time is short and I was able to get a table fairly quick. With the layout and tables, this is more of a place for a quick bite or with a smaller group. I ordered the Nikutama udon regular size and it was delicious. I wish they added more broth to the bowls. Regardless, it was very filling and tasty. The udons are cooked to perfection, the beef is nicely wet, the broth is umami, and the toppings (scallion, tempura bits, and seaweed) paired well together. One thing to note is they only have disposable utensils that are self serve. They have a nice water dispenser, which means I didn't need to rely on their staff or waiter to get what I needed. Overall, the food, portion size, and affordability of Marugame is excellent. I'd definitely come back for another quick meal in the future.

Yelp
Idk why but I love going to Marugame as my recovery meal after a nigh out. Curry Udon (3/5): I love the udons here but I decided to experiment with the curry udon today. I have no idea why, but I thought it was okay. It was very heavy and the curry tasted a bit dry. Probably would not get this again.

Yelp
This place has been for a while now and I wanted to go here because how good the place looks. The atmosphere is quite artistic since they painted anime characters with the colors they use. The food is fairly priced costing between $11-14 per bowl depending on the food and size. You can watch how they make the bowl in front of you. Then, you can go and select any add ons like gyoza and shrimp tempura (usually costing extra per piece). Got the shrimp tempura since it's my favorite. Food was really delicious and place tends to fill up a bit quickly while I was dining in. The noodles are very chewy and the tempura flakes tend to become soggy in the broth, which is quite normal. Beef is tender and juicy. Definitely would come back here again to try other dishes as well as other add ons.
google avatar

Yuria G.

Yelp
There was a line next to the restaurant, but we were able to get in pretty quickly. I ordered the curry udon. As soon as I placed my order, the udon was served into the bowl and the staff prepared everything really efficiently. They also had a wide variety of tempura! The noodles were softer compared to the Marugame Udon in Japan. The curry was on the sweet side--personally, I wish it had been a bit spicier. My husband ordered the chicken katsu bowl, but it turns out you can switch the rice base to udon, so he did that. They also had some limited-time menu items, which makes me want to come back again and try something new!
google avatar

Anny O.

Yelp
My favorite udon restaurant! Flavor is always consistent. Broth is flavorful but some people think it's too salty. Udon texture is chewy. I like mixing the egg into the soup and it makes the soup a bit thicker. Came on a Saturday for lunch and there was maybe 20 people in line ahead of us but the line moved fast
google avatar

Thalia M.

Yelp
Marugame Udon will always be my go-to spot for udon. I mean-- they just do it so well! During my most recent visit, I tried their Curry Niku Udon. The beef was delicious and the portions were HUGE. I'm never able to finish a bowl on my own so I either share with a friend or take the rest to go. Back to the Curry Udon: The udon is freshly made so it's super bouncy and has the perfect bite. The only downside to Marugame's dishes is that they're always too salty for me. Their tempura selection is also immaculate with lots and lots of options to choose from! The green bean tempura is my new current favorite and the sauce that comes with it is CHEF'S KISS! MWAH!
google avatar

Tracey H.

Yelp
The food is consistent with other franchise locations - solid basic udon. They have a fair selection of tempura, but did not see any onigiri. We tried their newest item - Teri Chicken Tartar. Do not worry, it's not raw chicken but tartar sauce. It was unique as it created a pickle-y creamy flavor for the broth. It's probably not for everyone. I'd recommend only if you enjoy tartar sauce. Service was quick. We got our orders in a timely manner and were able to find seats immediately. Our table was cleaned quickly after we left to allow for more customers to get seated. I like how customers enter through one door and can leave through the back of the shop. It created a better traffic flow.

Yelp
I'm not someone who loves udon (I prefer ramen, pho, and many other non-udon noodles) but this place (Marugame) always hits the spot. My first visit to a Marugame location was in Hawaii, and it was amazing, didn't know udon could be that great. I've since visited the San Ramon location, and recently this one. First time visiting this location, the udon is still very excellent and the tempura options top notched. There's not much to say about service and ambiance, as it's a line up and order type of place. We still had to line up at this location, but at least once we got our food (around lunch time on a Saturday) we could easily find a table to sit down, which was not as easy at the other locations. Overall, udon very good. Food prices are reasonable for a great meal. We would come back again if craving udon along with good tempura options.
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
Ordered the Nikutama. Love the broth it was sweet and umami. I ordered fireball to make it made it spicy and ordered fireball. Tried a few bite before adding the fire ball. Really good. Love the dashi. Has a light smoky flavor to it. I topped my bowl with green onions and tempura flakes. Added about 1/3 of the fire ball and it gave it a nice kick. Beef flavorful, delicious. I had some pieces of tendon on the beef, made it a bit chewy but still really good flavor. I grabbed a tempura tamago. The batter was light. Tempura sauce was self serve on the side dipped it in. Nice sweet and savory light flavor The dark meat fried chicken was very juicy and well marinated. Solid choice.
google avatar

Sherica G.

Yelp
Gyudon was perfectly seasoned, not salty, not too sweet. Shrimp tempura was flavorful and the chicken katsu was the best, it was tasty and tender. The restaurant was casual, but efficient.
google avatar

Annie K.

Yelp
Came here with my bf as he likes this place. It's lighter noodle choice than Ramen Nagi across the way. The dishes r pretty consistent and the tempura is usually very crispy and bomb. We came late today, bf got Nikuma one large. I got an extra bowl to have some. He also got egg tempura and jalapeno tempura. First time trying both. The jalapeno was spicy and a bit hard, and the egg was good. Overall okie but marugame tastes a bit on the fast food side to me and isnt my fav.
google avatar

Caitlyn M.

Yelp
There are tons of food options at Valley Fair but Marugame Udon is always a solid choice for a quick casual meal! Their udon is made fresh, you can definitely tell in the bouncy texture of their noodles. I got the BK udon served hot with a delicious umami broth! They top it with green onions and tempura bits. It was very filling and satisfying. I also got the tamago and sweet potato tempura. The tamago one is my favorite and never disappoints. The sweet potato one was just okay. I liked that it was made out of a Japanese sweet potato tho. For drinks, I got the calamansi lemonade which was very refreshing and a better version of standard lemonade
google avatar

Vivienne C.

Yelp
I haven't had Marugame Udon in so long and I can't believe it opened up in Valley Fair. Decided to go and getting the udon was super easy as your order the types of udon that you want before grabbing the tempura. I know this is considered a fast casual restaurant but the fact that you could get a solid bowl of noodles for less than $13 in Bay Area is essentially unheard of. I ordered the Tonkotsu Udon and I thought it was slightly worse than the last location I had Marugame Udon (Cambridge, UK) although still good nonethless. They only gave 1 piece of chasu, there was too little soup, there was a bit too much fried onion, and the egg was completely hard boiled. The flavors still hit though and I think this is a good alternative especially if you're sick of waiting in line at Ramen Nagi. Overall, not a bad eat in Valley Fair! Would come here after I have shopped around and am glad they are opening more of these more trendy restaurants.
google avatar

Amy T.

Yelp
I love eating noodle and eating udon and this Marugame is the perfect place for that! I've been to locations including Hawaii, Santa Clara, and sf and I'm so shoot they brought one closer to me. Marugame iron never disappoints ever and this will be my go to place whenever I'm at valley fair. If you love noodles like me you'll enjoy this place!!

Baileyy D.

Yelp
I needed something savory, needed something cold so some nikutama udon is perfect especially at a poorly air conditioned mall. Was lucky enough to come at a time with no wait in contrast to the ramen across the strip which if you've seen the scene you'd know. It was good (lengthened in italics), but could be better (in bold)- in quite a few ways. Noodles could be chewier, beef to onion ratio protein-er, tempura crispier (we don't like soggy zucchini). By all means a solid meal but definitely room for improvement. It's America after all, the wonderful land where all chains come and charge 3x more for 1/2 the quality. So a safe choice if you're craving udon, you'll leave neutrally satisfied ;)
google avatar

Mai S.

Yelp
If your looking for quick and affordable place to eat in the mall, this would be great choice! Line moved quickly and I got to eat my food within 5 mins of entering the restaurant for around $10! However for someone who knows the original marugame udon in Japan, it wasn't as good as I wanted. The noodle was less chewy (saw no one was really watching noodle while it was getting cooked?) and tempura was not crunchy on outside. Also less variety of topping. (No chikuwa ??) I wouldn't recommend it if you are expecting to taste the same as ones in Japan.
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
Quick and cheap eat!! But still so good!!! Line up and it moves quick. Pick your bowl and toppings. They have additional fried items as well. I got the tonkatsu regular and it was perfect for me. Kids both got the kitsune and added an extra kitsune. No issues getting a table on a Friday evening. Definitely recommend!!
google avatar

Haleh H.

Yelp
The interior has fun graphics on the walls. Decent amount of seating and pretty easy & fast flow & ordering. The food was yummy and we love how flexible it is in what you can add to your bowl. We got the BK Udon and Tonkatsu - both had really tasty broth and flavor. The pork also was tasty. We also got one shrimp and one squid tempura. The shrimp was great, the squid was also fine. The quality was good, light and fluffy.
google avatar

Winston L.

Yelp
Tried Marugame with my friends when the line for Ramen Nagi was too long and I was pleasantly surprised! The line for Marugame was not terrible on a Sunday night and there was plenty of seating inside. It was super easy to order as you choose your dish and then have the option to get tempura or sides down the line. I got the Nikutama and it was a hearty bowl - the noodles were chewy and the broth was super savory and I loved the flavors from the green onions and crispiness of the tempura flakes. The zucchini and shrimp tempura were just okay not bad but not as much to rave about compared to the udon itself. A great casual restaurant that filled me quite up and quite quickly!
google avatar

Lillian B.

Yelp
We were excited to try since we've heard so many good things! However the dishes lacked flavor and were poorly prepared. Our meat was even cold! The environment felt like a cafeteria assembly line which I don't think works very well for udon. Nothing felt freshly prepared. We only finished about half of our meals and started to feel sick. We will likely not come back. On the bright side, the staff was kind and the menu was reasonably priced with many options! We had almost no wait!
google avatar

Mimi L.

Yelp
The tempura here was better than the one I had in another location as they were fresh and crispy. The Tonkasu udon noodle soup was flavorful. Vegetables in a small cup can be had for an additional cost and eaten with the soup. Matcha drink was mixture of sugar and matcha powder, just average. Overall food was good. Ordering was easy and smooth. Friendly and pleasant service. Staff cleaned up promptly keeping the place tidy. Recommend it.
google avatar

Diana G.

Yelp
Super yummy option for lunch or dinner! Food ordered: Tonkotsu Udon - SO GOOD, this is going to be my go-to order. Not too salty, or too heavy. I recommend trying this with all of the toppings at come with it. The fresh noodles were perfectly cooked. Shrimp Tempura & Squid Tempura - perfectly cooked. The squid was tender and felt light. Other Food in the Group: Nikutama - Friend enjoyed this and said it's a nice slight sweet. Vegan Miso Udon - Friend also enjoyed this and she said she would order again. Service: Quick service and staff was nice. It looked like the staff making the food was communicating well with each other. Ambiance: We went on a Monday afternoon and it was very clean. It has a quick service cafeteria feel to it. Overall: I will definitely be back. Great for full meals or just a small snack if you just stick to ordering tempura by the piece.
google avatar

Rita W.

Yelp
I always get the nikutama here - usually hot but sometimes cold when hot it's HOT - I've burnt my mouth on the food before & burnt my hands on the bowl lol when cold the udon feels undercooked - probably cus usually it would be cooked more by the hot broth broth is pretty good - not too salty & not too plain lots of onions with the beef egg is always poached really nicely tonkatsu was okay - not fabulous but not terrible spice bomb isn't super spicy, maybe med heat? tempura has a sign that says "fresh tempura" but they were kinda cold (despite the heat lamp) and... pasty? not sure if the right word service was pretty fast - the line always looks a bit long but it goes fast!
google avatar

Shelby S.

Yelp
LOVE this spot for a quick bite! Perfect ramen spot with variety of options and love the atmosphere. The restaurant itself was very nice and had a good vibe. I love how you can drive your own condiments and take out boxes making it fast. And the broth and noodles were super yummy.
google avatar

Ela M.

Yelp
It's just okay for me. As the saying goes, when you expand to other locations, the quality becomes subpar. Is it me or does anyone else feel the noodles to broth ratio is lopsided - in this case more noodles than broth! Like WTH when the noodles will just soak up all the broth. Or is this the case just for take out?

Yelp
Time: 3:09 PM DATE: 12/15/24 The food was great! One thing that did ruin my experience was how one of the runners came to the table and attempting to take the tray from table I'm at. Unfortunately, he attempted to take the tray from one of my friend that is not mentally stable and frightened my friend and my friend reacted by telling him to go away. The runner then proceeded to go to his other coworkers, a cashier, and another woman and what I assume is he told them what he just experienced and then all three proceed to laugh and point at our table. As we walked out the young Asian gentle looked at us and continued to smile as if he was humored by my friend's reaction. I understand sometimes the unexpected experience occurs at the most random of times but being a mental health clinician the runners reaction and choices are disheartening. There's a large population of people dealing with mental health issues and the way you choose to react and respond is crucial. Especially if you're working in customer service.

Yelp
This is one of many restaurants in Westfield Valley Fair but this is always my go to! The lines move fast as they make the orders on the spot and there's tons of seating available. There are a lot of options for udon & a few different rice bowls. After you order your bowl, you can add toppings and tempura to your order. I highly recommend checking out this place if you're in the area.
google avatar

Rikki Erielle N.

Yelp
I went at around 2-3PM on a sunday, and the line went by quick! I got the beef udon with the regular soup base, while my partner got the beef udon with the sauce base! The soup base was a traditional miso, but the soup base was a bit more sweet and flavorful! I personally liked the miso base more, but others might prefer the sauce base!
google avatar

Janine F.

Yelp
I've been to the Marugame Udon location in San Francisco, but it was my first time at this one. I ordered something new and I'm so glad I did! I got the large tonkatsu udon with a couple pieces of tempura on the side. The broth was perfectly salty and the noodles had the perfect chewiness to them. The complimentary tempura flakes and scallions tied the udon all together. I highly recommend getting what I ordered. We went during dinner time so it was busy as expected. The line moves quickly though and there's ample seating inside. The inside is clean and they're really good about clearing tables quickly.
google avatar

Michelle T.

Yelp
Great value for consistent quality of the udon noodles here. They recently released a chicken tartar sauce udon which was unique, but I found that to be too creamy for me personally so I would stick to the original flavors. Ideal spot for a quick and efficient meal.
google avatar

Heather I.

Yelp
Fast service! Don't let the long line fool you! It moves pretty quick. The food is great! You can also add on tempura after you grab your bowl of udon. My husband likes the spot more than other udon places because they're fast, delicious and decently priced for a bowl of udon!!! Some other udon places cost around $20 which we think is crazy!
google avatar

Yelp
Went on a Saturday evening around 5 PM. First have to line-up and order your food cafeteria style. You get to choose your toppings and tempura sides. Pay at the end of the line and find a table on your own, which maybe be hard depending if it's busy, which was busy for us. They have workers to help find you a seat though. The food was pretty good. I got the regular dashi and my Mom got the curry one with a lot of tempura on the sides. It's my first time going to an Udon Specialty restaurant so this was an experience. I recommend to people who haven't been here.

Yelp
I have passed by this place several times across my visits to Westfield and finally gave it a shot? I picked one of the Udon (large) options, and I will admit it's one of the better noodles dishes I had in a while. The sweetness in the udon is new to me but it works incredibly well. I will admit I'm also impressed the dish itself doesn't feel too heavy. Rather, it's the right balance between sweet and delectable. I have no issues with the price either? To me it's one of the more fairer options to eat in Westfield.

Yelp
Our favorites are the Nikutama and Curry Nikutama! Definitely recommend getting shrimp tempura, croquette, and sweet potato to go with the meal. Love the efficiency and vibe here

Yelp
The first time I ever had marugame udon was on a trip to hawaii, and ever since then their chain has been able to expand all over california. I normally like their dipping udon options, but since they don't serve it on their california menus, I opted to try a variety of their udon soups. I will say that most of their broths here are pretty salty compared to most udon places. Their broths are decently flavored and are offered with a variety of sides and/or toppings. Although they do have considerably more affordable prices than other udon restaurants around, there are definitely better options. Regardless, for the price, efficiency, and flavor I do think marugame is worth a visit and can leave u pretty satisfied. But I do still think Hawaii still has the best Marugame Udon location!

Yelp
The very first time I went here was honestly the best experience in my recent years because you just walk up to the counter and order what kind of udon you want, and they give the bowl of udon to you very quickly and positively. After you get your bowl you can order a variety of tempura that you grab and then you go to the cashier when you are done with everything. The first time I ate here I ate their curry nikutama udon and it tasted amazing because the curry is flavorful and comforting while the udon carried the curry and had a very nice chew and mouthfeel while eating it. Plus the environment inside the building felt open and spacious inside. But beware that no one can sit on the tables before ordering their food. Overall I highly recommend this restaurant for sure!

Yelp
We normally love this place since it's easy with the kids but today our young daughter found a half inch piece of pretty thick, jagged/sharp plastic in her soup. When my husband notified the cashier, there weren't any attempts to reassure us about where the plastic came from or if they would do anything to make sure the food they were still serving was safe for customers.

Yelp
Went on 7/19/25 around 8pm and one of the staff members were rude the one setting up the meal. The person infront of me forgot one of their meals & the staff was handing me their order (which i was not aware of) & the staff was getting upset that i took the wrong plate but i even asked them how come my meal didnt come with egg and stuff that i ordered but they kept telling me to move along the line. when another staff came to apologize, i said its okay no problem but the other staff was rude earlier. The tables were sticky as well.

Yelp
Had an amazing lunch after a day of shopping. Service was easy and fast. Process wasn't complicated. Place was clean and organized. Servers were pleasant and nice food as always was delicious.

Yelp
This place sucks compared to Hawaii and even the SF location. Food is not as good. Service sucks. Overpriced AF. They wana charge $3 for some "extra" bok choy when they literally gave 1 extra piece!!! The topping/meat portions are also bad. They use the regular soup spoon to ration it out, hence the minimum amount of veggies. Also lmao at the audacity for the screen to ask for a tip while the teen working the cash register was just texting on his phone. There are SO many better other udon places in SJ- go there instead.
