The Best Soft Serve In NYC - New York - The Infatuation

"If you're a soft serve purist, some of the flavors on this list might be overwhelming. That's why you should go to Marvel Frozen Dairy, an old-school soft serve spot in Astoria. They have flavors like chocolate, strawberry-pistachio swirl, and peanut butter frozen yogurt, and you can get your ice cream dipped (they call this giving it a bonnet), or in a sundae." - willa moore, hannah albertine, arden shore, molly fitzpatrick

The Best Soft Serve in NYC | Eater NY

"The third East Coast outpost of a long-running, family-owned soft serve shop, Astoria’s Marvel Frozen Dairy is the Long Island answer to Carvel. Founded in 1951, the shop is known for its wide range of cream, yogurt, and vegan soft serves, Marvel’s rendition is the perfect American boardwalk soft serve: light, marshmallowy, and designed to be eaten quickly with its signature “bonnet” shell." - John Tsung

Marvel Frozen Dairy - Review - Astoria - New York - The Infatuation

"It's actually kind of hard to find old-school soft serve in New York City, and that's why Marvel Frozen Dairy feels extra special. They have a several machines running at any given time, so you'll always have four classic flavors (two fro-yo and two vegan soft serve). We've tried them all, and all of them are good. In fact, we think this is some of the best vegan ice cream in NYC. They also have pre-dipped cones, flying saucers, and homemade chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches edged in teeny tiny chocolate chips." - Carina Finn

Google
Great soft serve ice cream shop! They keep it simple with a nice assortment of ice cream flavors and toppings options. We tried the pineapple with cherry bonnet and dulce de leche with m&m's. I like the soft serve since it's not as heavy and the ice cream was delicious! Can't wait to come back and try other flavors.

Great addition to Astoria - not just for summer! Quick - easy - delicious and just like you remembered from your early years. Crazy I didn't take photos of my chocolate ice cream as I slurped it up before it could melt down the cone!! Next time - photos!! The servers were smiley and cheerful. Plenty of chairs to relax and enjoy...as you think of having seconds! Note: it is on a side-street to make sure you look for it or you can walk right by and not notice this location. Don't forget to get extra napkins!!

Google
What a great shop! It’s too rare to find soft serve in a variety of flavors. Thank you, Marvel. They have coating/shell options that they call bonnets and a bunch of excellent toppings: love to see that. It’s a family-owned enterprise with a deep and rich history. Long may it reign.

Google
OK...this is the BEST soft serve ever! We've been here numerous times since it opened over the summer. Awesome place to stroll over to right after dinner. Super cute seating with umbrellas and tables so you can stay and hang around. So glad it's in the neighborhood (we needed a good ice cream spot!!) so I'm hoping it quickly becomes a neighborhood staple.

Google
Love that they opened one here in Astoria! I used to live down the block from them in Lido Beach and it was the place to get ice cream. Having one here in Astoria is awesome because I walk here with my dog all the time to grab a cone and continue our walk. Beats other ice cream places that are not dog-friendly.

Google
My shawty favorite ice cream in New York City. Enough said 💕

Google
Ice cream was delicious, creamy, smooth and not too sweet. Great portion and presentation. I'll definitely come back and try other flavors 😋 (The flavor in the photos are pistachio and strawberry swirl

Google
The most delicious soft serve I’ve ever had! True, I don’t have the spectacular Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop the way I do at Long Beach, but the spectacular quality of your ice cream is the same. Thrilled that you’ve decided on the friendliest neighborhood in NYC to host your unbelievably delicious treat. Welcome to Astoria 🌈

Yelp
My friend and I had already had dinner and a different dessert, but I had seen Marvel Frozen Dairy and was just really tempted by how appealing and yummy a soft serve would be. It also helped that their prices are so affordable and reasonable, which is especially notable for NYC where it's only getting more and more expensive. So I treated myself to a little pistachio and strawberry swirl soft serve and it was a delight. My friend really loved it and I liked it. I won't say it's the best soft serve of my life but for that price and portion, it's a yummy treat and deal. And the colors look so good together.

Yelp
Came here with my cousin recently after having brunch next door at The Grand. My cousin ordered a Milkshake and I ordered pineapple ice cream with Toasted coconut flakes. Let's just say that it sounds better than how it tasted. It was a little sweet but wasn't so delicious to me. I appreciated the fast and friendly service. However, this is somewhere that you try once as opposed to coming here regularly.

Yelp
Ordered: Small Sugar Cone (~$5): Peanut Butter & Banana Swirl Aya's take: At this point, I've probably tried all the swirl options and haven't been disappointed once. The Peanut Butter & Banana work so well together and the Banana actually tasted legit and not like the fake Laffy Taffy flavor. The Peanut Butter was nutty, creamy, and didn't overpower the banana or vice versa. Love that they specialize in soft serve unlike other ice cream spots in the area! Check them out.

Yelp
Came here with my husband after dinner and had wonderful service as we ordered our swirl of pistachio and coffee. Ice cream is super creamy and delectable - not too sweet. Not sandy at alllll. Wish there was a place to sit but it's okay - just go for a stroll up and down the block!

Yelp
I wanted to love this place after all the hype but the ice cream really fell flat. It's OK soft serve, but not great. I wouldn't recommend it as a first pick for ice cream.

Yelp
Took myself on an ice cream crawl on the first nice day of the summer and had to start at Marvel. It's a no frills kiosk with outdoor seating that offers the staple soft serve flavors and toppings you grew up with, plus a few interesting twists. Service is always fast and courteous, though I've had to wait on a short line during peak times here in the summer. Their outdoor seating features a few chairs and tables, which can get competitive and a little hectic, but once you snag a table you'll be glad you stuck it out. If you haven't had soft serve in a while, it's probably worth pointing out that if you're getting this on a super hot day, it's going to start melting pretty much immediately since this spot is basically outdoors. If you want your ice cream to have a longer shelf life, head over for some hard ice cream across the street at Ample Hills. One star off because the price is still so shocking to me, but I guess that's just a sign of the times.

Yelp
I've going to Marvel since I was a little kid. Always a treat having the best soft serve in the world. The service is always quick with a smile. Nothing like getting a brown bonnet and sitting in the parking lot or now on the boardwalk and enjoying it. I do recommend getting a cup rather than a cone, cause in the warm weather it melts fast.

Yelp
-good quality ice cream, tried the chocolate and vanilla swirl with half cookie (crunchies) toppings and half sprinkles -the ice cream itself was standard (hard to mess up the basic flavors!) -sprinkles are more waxy in texture so not my fave, but the crunchies topping was nice -cute outdoor seating set up, no indoor seating I believe -prices are steep but that's the case in most places anyway :(

Yelp
Really annoyed! When I got there there was no one behind the counter. After a few minutes a guy comes out to the counter and says can I give him a second. So he proceeds to prepare an Uber eats order at the speed of a turtle having no awareness of his surroundings and a line of people building up. The counter was filthy. Sprinkles and ice cream all over the place. I've been coming to this place for years but this kind of service is unacceptable!

Yelp
4.5/5. Decided to grab something sweet after brunch and passed by this place and I ordered a medium vanilla soft serve in a cone. The soft serve was extremely creamy and had a very strong milky flavor. The cone was unfortunately a little stale though. I like how they gave a lot even though it was only a medium! Will come back next time if I'm in the area but may get the waffle cone instead!

Yelp
FYI- The shop is not on 30th Ave., but around the corner on 37th St. I was walking up and down the block on the Avenue looking for it, and Google maps also places it at the center of the block, where The Grand and Sugar Freak is. I was wondering if it was a pop-up situation inside one of those restaurants. But just turn the corner around The Grand restaurant. Staff was very friendly, samples are on on a regular spoon. The samples are pretty big, a hearty 1.5 teaspoon. I LOVE pistachio ice cream & theirs was pretty tasty. The ice cream is about a medium heavy creamy texture. Some soft serve (ie. Ice cream trucks) are a little bit too heavy and creamy for my palette. I think Marvel it's just heavy enough, but shows the quality with the flavors with a pop. I got the strawberry and pistachio twist in a small cup $5. The small was a pretty big portion. The flavors were very tasty! I wouldn't have thought of mixing the two. Other twist options included mango and vanilla birthday cake, and other flavors I don't remember, maybe a peanut butter and banana. Too bad that the twist combinations are already preset by the way the machines are filled, for example I couldn't get a strawberry and chocolate twist. But I think that's a standard for most soft serve places. Nice option for Astoria!

Yelp
I passed by this ice cream place with lines and people eating it outdoors. I had to look it up and found out that it is fairly new and the customers are all raving about it. I had to check it out. They have variety of desserts that you can order such as soft serve, sundaes, shakes and etc... I got the soft serve after taste testing a few. The samples were fairly huge too. Tasted the vanilla - birthday cake one and the strawberry flavors. They also had toppings, but didn't want to deal with it and just eat it without. Anyways, I enjoyed both and can't wait to go back for another visit in the near future.

Yelp
Welcome to Astoria! We were here for the grand opening of $2 cones a couple of weeks ago. Their vanilla ice cream is so good; nice and creamy. We liked it so much I came back with my two golden retrievers for a treat yesterday. Definitely making this our go to ice cream spot this summer!
google avatar

Yelp
Returned to bring more of the family. Size small is the perfect size for us. Only 8 flavors that day, same as the ones they had before. No marshmallow. I did say I wanted to try the pomegranate/mango but craved the creamy coffee/dulce de leche again. I did get a taste of the fruity twist - like a sorbet/gelato, was good too. I might get tired of the flavors so hope they plan to have new ones.
google avatar

Heejin P.

Yelp
Delicious soft serve! They have a variety of flavors to choose from and if you get it in a cup, they'll also do two flavors for you. We got the watermelon, pistachio, and coffee. The watermelon was light and fruity and delightful! The coffee was very creamy and almost reminded me of custard. Can't wait to go back and try the other flavors!
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
Marvel ice cream is a great place to enjoy soft served ice cream on a nice summer night. They have plenty of interesting flavors. The portions are generous and The prices are reasonable for the portions they give. My favorites are the strawberry and vanilla but I'm looking to try the dulce de leche on my next visit. Definitely a worth while visit if you're in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Austin K.

Yelp
I came back here due to the dearth of ice cream places in Astoria (miss Ample Hills), but it was surprisingly much better due to the different flavors I got this time. I got coffee and dulce de Leche, and sampled chocolate as well which was decent too.
google avatar

Wesley K.

Yelp
Really not good! The flavoring was very artificial. I foolishly got the pistachio even after trying the flavors. Ironically, the small is supposed to be $5. But I was charged $5.20 with tax. I'm assuming that the small is $5.20, but the menu was not updated. I asked the "kids" at the stand serving ice cream and they just said it was tax. I have worked food and retail for so many years but have never been dismissive of people. I was like okay, but I doubt I would come back. I came here after eating super good Thai food and was super super disappointed. I understand that it's not a professional ice cream store, but I immediately see why it was only worth it during the grand opening for the $2 special. I rather pay a little more money, but get something better in Manhattan.

Darcy D.

Yelp
Love this place~ Great products and great service!!! My favorite flavor is coffee and they are fully stocked with so many flavors. It's one of my favorite places.
google avatar

Sara W.

Yelp
Almost $6 for a small cup of soft swerve ice cream. Ice cream feels so expensive these days, but it was a decent amount and pretty good. Got the pistachio and strawberry swirl flavor. They also had peanut butter and banana, chocolate and vanilla, mango and vanilla birthday cake as other swirl flavors. I did want pistachio and the strawberry goes well. This is your place for some classic soft serve.
google avatar

Manny S.

Yelp
Great service and Love the ice cream here ,delicious and will definitely be back often
google avatar

Yelp
New soft serve and frozen ice cream shop with their soft opening today. Definitely done different flavors than you normal Carvel. Peanut butter and banana swirl was very rich. Didn't get to try their frozen yogurt or sundaes. Counter service was quick and friendly, the line moved very quickly. Worth coming by if you are in the area.

Yelp
Saturday was a great day for ice cream. After breakfast at Family Corner I headed to 30th Ave to try out the new soft serve ice cream parlor. There is no indoor seating as the place is very small, but there was some outdoor seating curbside. I arrived around 2.30pm and watched the last minute preparations. It seemed to take forever for them to open up as a group of very excited children started clamoring at the window only to find out that the creamery was not open yet! I sat at one of the tables and watched the owner teaching what appeared to be very young employees on how to swirl the ice cream cones, and use the cash register -you can see this in some of the photos here! Promptly at 3pm the windows were opened and we all made a beeline to the three serving windows. Those of us who showed up first were the first to be served. I ordered a cup with two scoops of mango, strawberry and coconut sprinkles I was served in window one. A longer line began at 3pm and went down most of 37th street. The flavors were delicious, not too sweet and not too soft. I was served in window one.The flavors were delicious, not too sweet and not too soft. Marvel's scoops come in different size cones and cups. As I was taking lots of photos, I ordered a small cup, Yes, $2.00, not bad. Marvel's options are displayed on a chalkboard at the back of the parlor. Currently, they were offering a limited number of ice creams which included mango, strawberry, chocolate, peanut butter and vanilla. I think there was a vegan option?
google avatar

Stacie C.

Yelp
It's great to have a soft serve joint in the neighborhood with vegan options!! As of now, they have mango and vanilla birthday cake vegan ice cream that can be enjoyed as a twist. On my first visit I had a twist on a cone to see how it was on its own and it was great. Good flavor and good consistency. The second time I tried juat the vanilla birthday cake with coconut as a topping. Yum! They have a lot of different toppings in addition to the standard sprinkle you expect at a soft serve place.
google avatar

Samah I.

Yelp
Super nice service. Fair price for the amount of ice cream given no matter the size of the cup. You can get multiple flavors in a twist (if they're on the same machine) or just two separate pumps in the same cup. Would 100% try other flavors!
google avatar

Lizzy K.

Yelp
Hmmmmm, how can you go wrong with Marvel? You can't. You want ice cream? Fro yo? Sprinkles? Classic. Puts a smile on your face. It is all delicious, lines move fast, service is great. You must try it at least once in your life but when you do, you will probably dreaming about going back.
google avatar

Chuck K.

Yelp
I love soft serve, so I am elated to have this in my neighborhood. The prices are higher than average, though; I expected my cone to have some more ice cream on top. Overall, I'm glad to have Marvel in town.
google avatar

Trina P.

Yelp
Yum yum yum! I stopped by Marvel after spotting it on my walk. Marvel is just a counter that serves ice cream but there's seats on the side of the road where people can sit. I ordered the banana/peanut butter soft serve swirl. The banana tasted artificial (kind of like laffy taffy) but it hit the spot with its rich, creamy texture. The peanut butter flavor was not as strong as I expected but overall, I left pretty satisfied with the soft serve I received!
google avatar

Melanie S.

Yelp
I love soft serve ice cream. There's something about a soft serve on a waffle cone that is so nostalgic to me. So when I found out that Marvel Frozen Dairy was opening up, I hopped right on it! They have many options for customers to choose from so I decided to sample them. First of all, the sample sizes? HUGE. A normal person can sample 2-3 of the flavors and be satisfied. But, I'm not a normal person so I decided on a cup of pistachio ice cream. If you're familiar with pistachio ice cream, you'd know that not every ice cream place will do it correctly. Sometimes it'll taste like almond extract, and I've heard some people say it tastes like cherries. But Marvel does pistachio ice cream REALLY well. It had light pistachio notes, it was super creamy and custard-like, and sweet. I also tried their vegan mango and it was so refreshing and light. I'd say if you want something creamy and you're not extremely hot, try the pistachio! But if you want something to cool you down on a blazing hot day, try the vegan mango!
google avatar

Jasmine R.

Yelp
Was walking down 30th and noticed a new ice cream place in the hood! Solid soft serve and friendly service. I got a twist with rainbow sprinkles. I'm not usually the biggest sprinkles person but these were fresh and now I'm a believer. Excited to come by again!
google avatar

C P.

Yelp
Very fast service and friendly staff. Amazing flavors and variety of toppings, will definitely be visiting again
google avatar

Karen M.

Yelp
Tried the mango flavor and wasn't too impressed. Had a very artificial flavor to it but the texture was great. Smooth and creamy. We'll have to go back and try the vanilla or pistachio next time and give it another chance.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
The best soft serve in the world, been going to the Long Beach location forever, and having this place open in my neighborhood is nothing short of a miracle. I liked the vegan birthday cake flavor last year a lot. The vegan ones taste like they use dairy, dulce de leche this year is so good.
google avatar

Andrea E.

Yelp
Delicious flavors and so fresh! Cant wait to go back and try more flavors. This will definitely be our fo to in Astoria
google avatar

Becky F.

Yelp
My friend brought me here to try their vegan birthday cake soft serve and we were both so impressed! She's not vegan, but tried the vegan ice cream too and thought it was just as creamy and tasty as regular ice cream, which is definitely a huge compliment! I haven't had birthday cake ice cream in forever (not usually a flavor that's offered in vegan, unfortunately) so it was really fun to try it. We'll definitely be back when it's warm again!
google avatar

Yelp
Stood in front of the counter but no one greeted nor acknowledged us. Machines seemed to be down. Not a great start for a business.

Yelp
Finally soft serve ice cream in Astoria, So yummy! Reasonable priced and a summer classic! Welcome to astoria!
google avatar

Sadri B.

Yelp
a new soft ice cream joint in astoria on 30th ave via the side street that keeps it simple and cool. outside seating across from ordering counter, simple menu of soft ice cream on cone or in cup , bonnets in cup only, sundaes, milkshake and floats with a decent variety of toppings including my fave of m&ms and reeses pieces and sprinkles . a bit pricey but the ice cream is good at least and my cheapskate cuz was slobbing the hot fudge sundae all over his face and shirt which i enjoyed seeing for a good laugh at his expense. its summer time and enjoying ice cream during the summer time is american as apple pie and marvel frozen dairy in astoria makes it happen.

Karen S.

Yelp
The ice cream is on point, so yum yum yum. The server was a little weird, like he was in a bad mood and didnt understand why we were there for ice cream, with two kids on a Saturday evening!?

Tommy T.

Yelp
Great addition to the neighborhood. Froyo was delicious. The staff was friendly and attentive. I will definitely be back.
