Excellent food, very friendly staff, you order and pay at the counter and they serve the food. You get the food in delivery boxes. We got great recommendations. Prices are high, but quality is good too. The only thing I disliked is that they don't offer traditional service and the presentation of the food! If that would have been different I'd give 5 stars!

Masala Story offers authentic Indian pairings in a quaint, family-friendly atmosphere. The staff were very knowledgeable, friendly, and outgoing. They were out of the samosas I wanted when I ordered, but the host suggested I try the fish pakoras instead and my goodness, they were delicious! The bread that comes with most plates was also warm, soft, and flavorful. Masala offers beer, wine, and cocktails, which is rare for a lot of Indian restaurants so I appreciate the offer. That said, while the bartender was very friendly, I was not incredibly impressed with the cocktail I ordered, but it certainly did not detract from the overall experience. This restaurant is a walk-up and order place, and you can seat yourself. They offer a large covered patio for outdoor seating, but the mosquitoes were out in force unfortunately. They have large, picnic-style benches inside which are great for large groups. The service was also incredibly fast. It’s very kid-friendly too! There were many families with their small children when we went there. Perfect for the surrounding neighborhood.

If you like individualized, pampered attention…oh and great food, lol, then this is the place for you! I LOVE Masala Story. If I lived in the Brookland/CUA area, then this would be my “Cheers” because I’d frequent it often…first the environment is so cozy and inviting. (Someone was eating and chilling on their laptop when we were there). The staff is amazing. This time Kushmal attended to us, very professional and courteous; if I had to sum up the vibe here I’d say: the feel of fine dining, wrapped in a casual meal with an old friend. Simply because the atmosphere is very cozy, but you’re treated with respect and care. Ok so now let’s talk about the food. I ordered the Lamb Keema Samosas which were delicious. The lamb was seasoned great and the dough was fried perfectly. My only wish was that they were larger. These were the smallest samosas I’ve eaten and it was $9.50 for the pair, which I think was too expensive for what you receive. I also ordered the Punjabi chicken: curried bone-in chicken with rice and chickpeas…also delish! There was a bit too much of one spice though. It was seedy, like Cardamom maybe, every three or four bites into the rice and I would bite one…it kinda overpowers your taste buds until you scoop in something else, lol. Not a deal breaker for me so I could easily get past it….it also comes with an optional spicy sauce ($.50) which was really spicy so I’ll skip next time. I got a creamy and fruity Mango Lassi to wash it all down and it instantly cools your mouth after a few sips. Let’s break down the cost and make this more affordable (so we can go here more often)…my Husband ordered the Vegetable Samosa, Chicken Curry and a Mango Lassi. We paid $72 total, which leaves us at $36 per person. At this rate, we’d be broke eating here regularly…but the food/environment is amazing, so let’s work this out. We both had leftovers so, next time, if we wanted to spend less, we could choose between skipping the samosas and ordering one meal each… or getting two samosas and sharing one meal. Either way will save us $20 and still have us stuffed walking out. We could also opt for water and save another $10, bringing us down to $20 per/person by not purchasing the Mango Lassi. Overall, I’m in love with Masala Story and am looking forward to my next visit. They have a full bar, tables to accommodate large parties and a cool outdoor eating area. It was raining when I checked it out. If it was warmer, you could eat outside even in the rain. You won’t be disappointed or unsatisfied eating here!🥰😋 They have another location in Downtown DC called the Goat Room. Kushmal said that they have a nice clay oven there and makes excellent kabobs!!!…my Hubbie and I love Chicken Kabobs so we’ll definitely be stopping by one day.

I ordered Masala Story for delivery, and it was delicious! So many options to choose from! Everything was so tasty. The samosas were standout! Plenty of vegetarian options.

Compres to other places in the district, I felt the platter was generous with chicken. I wish I’ve ordered more chickpeas because they were simply amazing. One of the delicious desi food place we have been so far in DC. Taste was authentic ,service was quick and great . Aloo paratha was so good . Freshly made . Not so much stuffed with dough . Bangain bhartha,Dal Makhani every item was cooked to perfection, great taste . Definitely recommend this place in DC .

The food at Masala Story is the worth the trip. We’ve tried many indian restaurants and it always is compared back to Masala Story. The food is high quality and delicious, the atmosphere is comfortable and casual and the staff is kind. Prices are a little higher than average but well worth it. We make an effort to visit whenever we’re back in DC and it’s always a delight.

This is a fantastic little spot. Has a bunch of outdoor seating as well, so we brought our puppy to sit outside with us. They had fans and heaters so it'll be suitable in spring and fall! The food was fantastic and we'll be back to work our way through the rest of the menu. Punjabi chicken was my favorite! The staff was so kind and brought the food out incredibly quickly. So lucky to have this little spot in the neighborhood!

We weren't wowed by Masala Story. I'm not sure it would survive if it were in a neighborhood that had more restaurant options. WHAT WE LIKED: Very friendly and helpful counter service. Big menu with lots of variety, including a ton of vegetarian and vegan options. Very accommodating regarding choice of spice levels. Nice breads. Fun room scattered with children's books. WHAT WE DIDN'T LOVE: Flavors were fine but nothing special that made us eager to return. Not a lot for the money. The Thali, in particular, feels like a ripoff. Yes you can choose 5 items but it's just a tiny taste of each, totalling as much food as a single entree but 50% more expensive. Plastic, plastic, plastic everywhere - everything's on single use plastic plates with a set of plastic utensils wrapped in plastic. The waste is reason enough not to eat here.

We enjoyed our visit to Masala Story! We had been wanting to try it for some time now. The samosas were super flavorful! And we loved the chicken biryani dish. The service was prompt and the food came pretty quickly. The restaurant was not crowded. I like the brightly colored decor inside the restaurant. It's lively and fun.

The service is amazing. The staff are very kind and friendly. However, the food isn't very flavorful. Perhaps they tone it down for their customer base. But, I never find that necessary.

The food was great! So much so that I forgot to take a before photo. I had the chicken curry with a side of spicy chutney (my Trini self loves spice) and the spiced lacha. I also tried the Amritsari fish (not pictured). The chicken curry had the right amount of flavor though I wish it was spicier on its own. The chutney was a great add on to build up the level of spicy. The amritsari fish was also well seasoned. The only con would be the price. The chicken curry on its own is $20 but it's enough food to have leftovers. Overall, the food and service were both great so I will be back!

Haven't ever been inside but my go to order from uber eats when i'm craving indian! The food and flavors here are SO good. Only thing i wish is that their portions were bigger! It's $20 for about a cup of buttered chicken platter. Definitely expensive but so good.

I totally get these reviews! What a fantastic family oriented neighborhood restaurant. Food/drinks: This is good Indian food. Not too oily. Very flavorful. I loved the Thaali (sampler plates), where you get a small serving of 5 different sauces + rice + roti + raita. They were very helpful with gluten free and dairy free options, and I had NO problems! The meat and veg dishes I had were great, and I was stuffed by the end. On top of that, they recommended I get papadam (lentil cracker) since I couldn't do roti, and it helped me feel like I wasn't missing anything. For drinks, they have a bar and they have canned cocktails; I didn't partake but my partner did. Service: This is a self service model. You order at the counter, take a number, and then sit down. They bring your food to you. You bus your own tray. It's not fine dining but it's quality fast-ish food. The gentleman at the counter was also very helpful. Ambiance: Its cute! I love that it's an artsy meets bohemian meets industrial feel, down to little details like the window walls or uniquely tiled bathroom floors. It's an artful nod to India. Also, the kids book corner? Adorable! The only thing one could complain about is the price, which, honestly, for good quality food, I won't complain. I'll be back!

I've ordered from this restaurant multiple times and I have also dined in. It's now a staple for me. Their food is pretty consistent and is always on point when I order. I highly recommend their Salmon and Fish biriyani. It comes with a lovely yogurt sauce that pairs well with the rice. The rice and fish are well seasoned and it's enough portions to have leftovers the next day. The service is pretty quick but when I've gone it's not crazy busy so I've been fortunate. It's a nice casual spot to dine in on a date, with friends or by yourself!

The samosas were just the right amount of spice, and the side sauce was as an absolute delight. If you're like me and enjoy a kick in your food, you'll love these. The butter chicken was creamy, rich and very good. I have to say that unlike some other places I've tried, this butter chicken didn't have that much spice and it was more on the creamy tomato-y side. While I personally missed that spicy kick I still found the dish enjoyable. The garlic naan was soft and flavorful and was perfect in soaking up all the creamy sauce from the butter chicken.

Yum! Delicious and adorable Indian food with quick pickup and very nice service. I love the casual environment in the restaurant and the wonderful food. The samosa chaat was outrageously good! I also loved the chicken korma, which came with rice and chickpeas. So good!

I love this place! I was initially upset about the palak paneer portion size, but this hasn't stopped me from returning. Years later, I say this place rocks! I'm so happy to have a neighborhood Indian restaurant.

We moved to the Brookland area and I walk around a lot in the area to run errands. And EVERY time i walk within 2 blocks of this place, I just drool at the amazing smells coming from here - it's SO inviting and enticing! It's hard to not want to come here literally every day. The outdoor seating area is great, even it it's just to have a drink while waiting for your food. And the owner keeps a few interesting Indian whiskies and wines on hand, if you're feeling adventurous to try something new. And if you want delivery, especially not too far from the area, it's lightning-fast through most of the delivery apps. No 72-minute waits here! We've tried a lot of different entrees here but hands down their butter chicken is unstoppably good. Like magnificent. One of the best I've ever had. Flavorful, creamy, and decent portion size. Their vegetarian dishes are also pretty terrific and flavorful, if you're not feeling meat. Each entree comes with a solid portion of rice and mildly-spiced chickpeas which adds a little texture and flavor to your typical curry+rice meal. Importantly, most of their entrees are not very greasy/oily. As an Indian who cooks at home and who's tried a LOT of Indian restaurants, I can assure you that non-greasy entrees are easy to cook, hard to find, and a delight when you find a place that can do it. Most Indian restaurants cook with a LOT of soybean oil to add volume to their dishes. It seems this place doesn't do that much. Great local neighborhood place and I'm so glad we live so close by!

Cozy, mom and pop feel soon as you walk inside. My go to Indian spot. Everything I've ever ate here always had me come back for more and everyone I recommend to come here has never been disappointed. Staff is friendly and happy to provide recommendations and explain each dish. The mango lassi is to die for.

I recently ordered Masala Story and was quite disappointed with the overall experience. While the food itself was reasonably tasty, the portion sizes were shockingly small, given the prices they were charging. I ordered the Punjabi Chicken & Goat Vindaloo, which is listed on the menu for $19 & $21. When the order arrived, I was taken aback by how little food was actually in the tiny container. It was barely enough to constitute a single serving, let alone a full meal. The protein was a tiny 3-4 ounce portion, accompanied by a small side chana daal. I would have expected a much more substantial filling dish at those prices. Instead, I was left feeling hungry and regretting spending so much money on such a meager meal. The delivery arrived quickly enough, but the value just wasn't there. I understand that restaurants need to price items to make a profit, but there's a line where the portion sizes become unacceptably small. Masala Story has crossed that line, in my opinion. I won't be ordering anytime soon, and I would caution others to carefully consider the portion sizes and prices before ordering from here. It seems they are more concerned with maximizing their margins than providing a satisfying culinary experience for their customers. **I forgot to take photos; otherwise, I would have shared those to illustrate what I mean**

Excellent customer service. The food came out fresh and hot. The owner is the best and made us feel welcomed. He was patient and answered all of our questions. We were going to take our food to go but decided to eat outside and the owner accommodated us. Even the other guest that were there at the time were friend. It is a true community loved restaurant and the food was authentic and tasty. I am returning.

Amazing food! I've had a lot of Indian food, but masala story was definitely the best by far. I ordered the thaali- for the non veggie option you can choose 3 veggie options, with 2 non veggie options. The price was 27$. The plate came with rice and a flat bread/roti/paratha type of bread. Everything was DELICIOUS. The chicken Tikka I got wasn't too sweet, the other chicken item (I think vindaloo) was also tomatoey and had an excellent tangy curry. All the veggie sides were excellent although I enjoyed the masala story one the most (great if you're looking for tangy tart salty tasty)! Every curry was distinct and tasted FRESH and made with the highest quality ingredients. The roti was so good and the rice was perfect. Nothing was too salty, too buttery or too sweet - you could tell this place used the finest herbs and spices. One con is that I thought 27$ was overpriced for the amount of meat I got. I got 2 pieces of meat for each chicken dish, so totally 4 pieces of small bite sized chicken for my thaali. I felt that it was more vegetarian than not and would have thought 20$ would be the maximum price for this plate. Nevertheless, I would definitely come again but maybe once a year due to the price. I do wish they had lunch buffet options or something.

Out of our 10 day back east adventure- the five us on our trip voted this as our favorite! From the moment you walk in, the entire experience is pure joy- the whole staff is welcoming & super helpful (especially with my sister who had never tried Indian food before- I know, I was shocked too). The menu is huge with something for everyone! We sat out in the patio & had a wonderful time. The pakoras and paneer stuffed bread were a delicious start & all of the curries we tried- including goat- were fantastic & I really liked the chickpeas and rice that came with it. If you like beer, be sure to try their Indian beer!!

I had never tried Indian food before. It wasn't for me, but it was good. In fact, I had always kept open mind towards food. It wasn't bad, and their mango lassi was really delicious. The staff provides wonderful services and is very nice.

Indian person review so trust this one. The food all around is solid, great selection and I can quickly recommend their goat curry. DC is generally disappointing as far as Indian food goes but Masala Story steps up to deliver. This is not why they got the 5 stars though. Masala Story is a great option for delivery/take out no question but the vibe of the space is one of a kind. Service is top of mind here and the people working there are truly enjoying the work. They are engaging and want you to have a great time; that effort goes a long way. Hoping this spot gets more attention because it's a hidden gem.

It's a rainy Saturday night. Dumping rain. Nobody is outside. I order lamb curry en route to a friend's house. Once arrived, I unpack the meticulously prepared packages of rice, curry, naan, samosas. My friend's French bulldog is loosing it. Salivating all over the floor. So am I. This lamb smells delicious. Outside the rain is indifferent, unable to understand, let alone experience glorious anticipation such as this. I spoon some curry and lamb chunks on top of the rice. Key word here is spoon. Yes I need it for the sauce BUT I also use it to eat the lamb. No fork, no knife required. SO TENDER. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? It practically falls apart. On a slow, rainy night, they could have phoned it in. Quality could have slipped. Lamb could be a bit tough or overcooked. But no! The meal is immaculate. Tender... AND DELICIOUS. Samosas were great too! I'm writing this review a full next day later because I'm still thinking about how tasty it was.

Wonderful food, great family running the place. A little expensive but it's where we treat ourselves when we decide we've deserved it :) We always get the butter chicken and the paneer, and also really like the Punjabi chicken and lamb vindaloo. Their spicy could stand to have some more heat, but otherwise faultless. Love having them in our neighborhood!

This spot is amazing!!! If you want real Authentic Indian Food, this is the spot for It! Approx. 2 years ago, I was lucky enough to find this spot from doing Uber Eats. One day I had a pick up order from this place - I walked in and saw the menu and was like "oooo, I have to try this place". The owner saw me checking out the menu and was like "why don't you try something". He's amazing salesman. His way of words and smile gets me every time. I told him that I was waiting on the order to be completed and I didn't have time. But he recommend the "Samosa's" to me and I am so glad I decided to give them a try. They were freaking amazing! I was a little scared, so I tried the most basic one - the Veggie Samosas. Each order of samosas comes with 2 pieces and a Tamarind Sauce (which I found out later on takes 9 hours to make). I hadn't had this place in a while until my birthday last year, and the Goat Curry was recommended and did not disappoint. I have now had them twice in the past two weeks and I absolutely love It! I finally tried the Lamb Samosas and those are my new favorites. The veggie is still good, but the lamb one packs a lot of flavor. I also tried the Goat Biryani on accident the other day and It wasn't to bad. It was a lot of food though. It was tasty and came with this sweet yogurt sauce that complimented It well. Now when It comes to pricing, they are a little pricey, but you definitely get your money's worth. Naans are about $2 - $3 Appetizers range from $7 - $9 Entrees range from $15 - $18 Overall this my favorite Indian Cuisine spot and I feel bad for the ones that haven't experienced It yet. ;)

The ambiance is great, food lovingly packed for takeout, food well prepared, tasty. All food was very fast prepared.

I absolutely love Indian food and seeing as how this spot had amazing reviews, I had to try it. Picture this, it's late at night and you don't want to leave your apartment so you do the next best thing: order Uber Eats. I usually don't have high expectations for takeout just because I feel like a lot of places don't care since you're not necessarily dining in (maybe it's just me), but I was not disappointed. Let me say, their portions are great. There were two of us eating and it was A LOT..in a good way! We definitely had some leftovers which are always great. The veggie samosas? A1 - holy cow some of the best samosas I've ever had; a must try! I've never had bhindi, but I am a big okra fan so I said why not? Also, not disappointed. Absolutely delicious...if you love okra, get this ASAP. The butter chicken and tikka masala were standard, but that didn't make them any less delicious. Still very, very good. This place is pretty nearby for me, so next time I will definitely be going to dine in but now I know I can get some takeout whenever and have an awesome meal!

Delicious authentic Indian food! We came for lunch and were greeted by very helpful employees. It was our first time and the employees helped give suggestions and understand the menu. The Thalis serve one person so we each ended up ordering one. I got the nonveg thali with lamb curry, Punjabi chicken curry, okra, baingan bharta and mushrooms with garlic naan and rice. Everything was delicious and really tasted homemade. It wasn't busy when we came so we got a good spot and enjoyed our food. They also have amazing mango lassis!

Masala Story is a corner Indian restaurant open for delivery and takeout during the pandemic in Brookland. When you order online, you enter the main entrance. Go to the table near the bar where your food will be. Our house ordered pickup dinner on a Friday evening and it didn't take long for our meal to be ready. With a smile on the staff's faces, we picked up our food. By the time we got home, it was still warm! If you like mild spice, order the butter chicken. The chicken is quality and it comes with rice and chickpeas on the side. The flavor itself was delicious. My wife, who likes more spice, enjoyed her chicken tikka. Our housemate wasn't impressed with his chicken biryani. He found the chicken dry and it wasn't as flavorful as our dishes. Overall, we recommend Masala Story. Order the butter chicken or chicken tikka!

We had a delicious home cooked meal at Masala Story. From the first bite, we could tell the food here is different. Unlike classic takeout Indian food, the dishes aren't greasy and heavy. We enjoyed the home-style recipes with bold flavors. The whole feel of this restaurant is homey: the owner really cares about the food and is sweet and welcoming. The outside is also very cute! They have a covered patio with heat lamps. Would definitely visit again when in the neighborhood!

Homemade Indian food in a residential neighborhood! If I lived closer, you'd probably find me here everyday. Outside the restaurant is the smell of bold spices that would make any pedestrian want to come inside and order. My favorite entree to order, when it is late at night and no other healthy options available for dinner, is the butter chicken with medium spice. Each entree comes with rice and some chickpeas. I often get a side of garlic naan and when I'm feeling extra- I order the mango lassi too. The butter chicken is delightful- the chicken pieces are marinated to achieve full flavor and the creamy, buttery sauce is addictively satisfying. The mango lassi is one of the best lassis I've had- it is thicker in consistency and the sweet, tropical mango flavor is refreshing. I've tried other chicken entrees but I found the butter chicken is the best bang for your buck since some of the other chicken entrees are filled with potatoes and come with less chicken chunks. Give this place a try- it's full of flavor.

One of my fave Indian spots in DC! They include chickpeas with most orders which is a welcome addition to any of their meals. I have tried the butter chicken and tikka masala - both are really tasty! Portions are big enough to have leftovers the next day, or to split one order between two people. I also usually get their garlic naan, which is good as well. I've only ever ordered take out, but the restaurant does have a cute outdoor area that I've seen when picking up food.

The food is good, but what I don't like is how they force you to buy tons of rice and chana masala. They package the dishes in a way where most of what you get is this filler that is completely irrelevant to what you ordered. This makes for a poor value given the prices they charge. If you're paying $15 per dish, it's reasonable to expect the full dish you ordered, not 70% rice and beans.

This was my first time trying to this place and the food was good and reasonably priced but the experience wasn't great. I ordered through a food app (forgot which one) for pickup. They said 30 minutes for pickup. I ended up waiting around 1 hour and 15 minutes at the restaurant. They were busy which I'm happy this neighborhood restaurant does well but waiting there was a terrible experience. Another person was waiting longer than me and still didn't have their food when I left. They need to do something to prevent this from happening in the future. They say the food is faster when you call them directly but I don't know how true that is. The worker there was friendly and he gave a tip saying if you order through the phone or in the restaurant, they give you an extra side to your platter. Overall, I'm debating on giving them place another shot but the first impression wasn't great.

I adore this restaurant. I've been a patron sense it's existence. There food is really yummy and flavorful. Nestled in the Brookland Area of DC, featuring indoor and outdoor seating. It's a family run business. The customer service is on par. Indian food is my favorite cuisine. Prior to becoming vegan my favorite dishes here were the butter chicken, the tikka masala & shrimp curry. Also I loved the Amiritsari Fish (the fish is cooked to perfection) & veggie samosa for appetizers. Currently I regularly order okra vegan dish and the aloo with cauliflower and potatoes. They give really generous portions where you can definitely can get 2-3 servings depending on your appetite. They offer beer and wine and other traditional Indian drinks such a Mango Lassi & Neembu Paani. One the best Indian spots in the area!

Their food is great and their take out packaging is good. I tried their chicken tikka masala, goat curry, vegetable samosa, garlic naan, and paneer stuff paratha. Don't bother getting the naan, it's absolutely store bought naan like the kind you can find at the grocery store. The paratha had no seasoning whatsoever. Everything else was fantastic. The chicken and goat were tender and nicely seasoned.

Came in because I was craving authentic Indian food, was greeted by the owner, it's open seating and order before you sit. The food came out very fast and the service was amazing! I ordered butter chicken and lamb curry along with a veggie samosa and chicken samosa ( also garlic nan of course) . For drinks I got the mango Lassi and a chai tea, definitely recommend both strongly, especially the mango lassi if you like mango. They have indoor and outdoor seating the atmosphere is very welcoming and relaxing, music is played throughout the dinning area.

This is a go to spot. Closed on Mondays. Great food. I've tried most of the menu at one point. There is nothing that has been nasty. Now my favorite is the Spinach rolls. OMG! They are so delicious. I've yet to find another Indian spot that makes these. Yummy! The staff are very professional and helpful. If your unsure of what to order they will happily give suggestions. My kids like here too. The.outdoor seating is nice. The ambiance of bollywood playing on the TV is pretty nice and entertaining. I really enjoy this place.

I was really craving Indian and this place delivered! The owner was behind the cash register and was super helpful with recommendations of food, drinks and place to visit in DC! He was awesome! Now, the food itself: I ended up going with thesamosa channa chaat which was fantastic! Great layering of channa and different sauces on the samosa pieces. I'd love to come back to try something else!

Had a craving for Indian food so another Yelp friend and I decided to check this place out. Neither of us had been here before. Around 6 p.m. it wasn't packed at all (not yet). I really wanted to like this place more and leave a better review. The place itself has a nice, casual ambience. Parking was easy here on a Friday evening. The staff was nice. I would say an overall 3.5 stars. I found the food ok, but the prices a bit high for the amount of food received. If you're dining in, you go up to the front, the menu is written on a board behind the counter and you place your order, pay, and they bring it to your table. I saw more to go orders than dining in. Although it got quite packed later on. We ordered samosas with our meal - they were good. I decided on the chicken tikka masala spicy (you can order based on your preferred level of spiciness). I like it hot and sadly, mine wasn't spicy at all. I had to add some of their green sauce to give it more of a "kick." It helped a bit, but it was still missing something for me. The food comes out in to go style containers which I found as a bit of a turnoff. It changed the mood of the dining experience for me. There is at least real silverware, but still. I was slightly disappointed in the amount of food that came with the meal. Wasn't much rice and the tika masala came out in a styrofoam cup. I didn't like the bread (roti). This won't be a place I'd be in a hurry to return to, but I'm glad I got to try them out.

Best naan ever -- buttery and flaky Chicken tandoori had bright peppers and onions paired with it Lamb biryani was flavorful Eggplant curry was sweet and creamy Chai was well spiced Salted lemonade drink was delicious

Absolutely delicious!! Masala Story is our go-to for Indian take out. The restaurant looks inviting with a lot of outdoor seating so we want to also go in person soon. We always get the butter chicken with garlic naan. Huge portion and the flavors are unreal. Comes with rice and chick peas. Great price for a lot of really good Indian food. So lucky this place is in our neighborhood!
