London’s Best Family Restaurants | Where to Eat With Children in London | Eater London

"Of the seven branches across London, Masala Zone Covent Garden will most appeal to younger diners, as they can gawk at the traditional Indian puppets that festoon the place as they wait for their food. Although they can occupy themselves at every branch with colouring books and crayons which are provided by the amenable staff. Mini thalis with milder curries are available from £6, and for those that can handle more heat, the rolled dosas prove popular. Indoor dining only." - MiMi Aye

Excellent vegetarian dinner! We had the Lucknowi Dani puri, Mandvi Dabeli and the Veg Thali. All the dishes were very tasty and flavorful. The 2 starters were especially delicious and well presented! The service was courteous and kind as well! The atmosphere was colorful with the Rajasthani dolls decorating the ceiling. The only negative was that we felt that the tables were set too close and we were very close to the other customers on all sides. Overall highly recommend!

I absolutely love this particular MZ! The food, service, and ambience are consistently excellent. The servers always greet and serve with a warm smile, which makes the experience even better. Some of my favorite dishes here are the Chicken 65, Squid Fry, Mangalore Chicken, and their soft, delicious chapatis — all of them are simply the best! I’d love to visit often whenever I get the chance.

What an incredible experience! The atmosphere was absolutely enchanting, with stunning aesthetics and captivating sculptures adorning the space. The meal was delightful, bursting with flavors that felt refreshingly unique compared to other Indian cuisine I've tried. It was a wonderful culinary adventure, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for something special!

Restaurant has beautiful interior. Easily accessible (very close to Covent garden station). The while the ambience was nice, i was disappointed with the food. We ordered for 5 people, but other garlic naan, we did not like anything. Curries were not delivering anything different. Would not revisit. Please note- the review is for vegetarian food only. Did not try the non-vegetarian.

Took visiting friends from aboard to this place and everyone enjoyed the meal. Nice calm atmosphere, reliable service and delicious authentic Indian food! This is my fourth time eating at this restaurant…I will come here again in future.

Google
Its a lovely restaurant in the heart of the city with lovely ambience, delicious food and a wonderful staff. Food was extremely tasty with appropriate spices. I would highly recommend this place. Despite of ample seating arrangements, I would suggest reserving table in advance as it is quite popular restaurant.

We had gone there in 2018 and we couldn't help it to visit everytime we come to London. The food is awesome as always. The drinks were awesome. Service was amazing as well. A special mention of Susmita. The food was awesome

We went for a first time with my husband, and ordered three mains, chicken tandoori curry, lamb curry and chicken biryani. The chicken curry was good, the lamb curry was the worst I have ever tried and the biryani was ok. The atmosphere is nice and pleasant. They have wheelchair access from a back door which they opened for us, but it would be nice if there is no table blocking that access because it was very awkward to enter. The staff very really nice and professional. RESPONSE: Initials for the person on which we have booking I.J We have booked for 5 pm. Our table was next to the wheelchair accesisble door. The meals are listed above.

Yelp
Gayle and I came here for Dinner during our London stay. We were a little tired of pub food and we love Indian Cuisine and chose their Covent Garden Location as it was an easy walking distance from our Hotel. And getting here and heading back in this neighborhood was an enjoyable experience as well. Ambiance - Comfortable and Casual Fancy with lots of customer buzz and stuffed Indian dolls hanging from the rafters. Service - Fast, professional, and helpful. Food We both chose the Regular Thali, which the menu stated that this is how Indians eat at home. Our selection (all served on a stainless steel platter) consisted of: 4 oz of butter chicken 2 fresh made vegetables 1 freshly made dal (lentil) Basmati rice Papad & Chutney An extra basket of Naan And after that, there would be no dessert. Gayle's dinner drink was table water (sparkling) and a Santara Cosmopolitan. Indian-style beer (made locally) went well with our dinner. We also struck up a nice conversation with a couple women at the next table and compared food and theater notes. Although we were on vacation, or Masala Zone experience was really a very nice date night.

Yelp
We ordered the butter chicken thali and some cheese naan, both of which were good. The presentation was very nice, and the portion sizes were good (although a bit on the smaller size for what you pay). We received our food pretty fast after ordering, even on a busy Friday night, which was great! The decor inside was very interesting as well.

Yelp
First time to this location. Quite a lively atmosphere, as nice as Soho. We waited less than 10 minutes for a table after walking in, sans reservation. Definitely not the cheapest, but always tasty. I really like the Thalis. We got the butter chicken to share and a few starters. Excellent chutneys to complement. I always like a mint and theirs is great. I love the onion Bhajia. The samosa chat would be a hard pass for me next time. Soggy fried dough smashed with overly sweet sauce. Ugh. Absolutely loved the curry, dal and the vegetables. Really kind service.

Yelp
This was my first time in London and heard great things about Indian food places in London. The ambience was top-notch where they got us accommodated although we did not have an appointment. The decoration across the place is also authentic. Coming to the food, we order the Jilebi chat for starters and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Then for main course, we ordered chicken and mutton thalis. I was utterly disappointed with what they offered in the thali. They have a small cup of cabbage, potato curry (the cheapest of the vegetables and not fully cooked). There was no desert in the thali and the portion sizes are absolutely not worth what they charged for. This place needs to update their portion sizes and thali offerings. Never recommend!

Yelp
I haven't had Indian food for the longest time because nothing quite hits the spot like it used to. yEsterday I passed by this restaurant on my way to the train and decided to order something to go. It was heaven! It was all perfectly cooked and spiced. I savored every bite. Indian food will never be the same after having this for dinner. £18 it also came with papadam chips not pictured here.

Yelp
I came here for a late night dinner after taking a late meeting from my hotel. It was still pretty vibrant and busy although the kitchen closed shortly after I ordered. I opted for one of the sampler platters with chicken tikka masala and garlic naan. It was a lot of food, probably enough for 2-3 people, but I really wanted to be able to try the various dishes. It was all delicious! The flavors were rich and satisfying. I ate at Dishoom as well, and honestly liked Masala just as much.

Matt E.

Yelp
The ambiance and service were very good. The food was also delicious, but it ended up giving me food poisoning.

Yelp
The food here is phenomenal. Honestly it's the best meal we had while visiting London. It was great!!! Staff is super friendly and accommodating however, make sure you have a reservation... they are always packed! We went on a Tuesday.... The place is nice, decor was very authentic. Loved it and highly recommend

Liam C.

Yelp
Excellent Indian food. Always love coming here when I visit London. They have a sampler platter that allows you to try a bit of everything and is plenty of food for two adults!

April Q.

Yelp
I'm genuinely surprised by the rating of this restaurant. I normally do not like Indian food and came at the request of my friend, who loves it. I had an appetizer and garlic naan bread. This turned out to be the best food AND service we experienced in London. We actually lamented not coming back the next night, and I regretted not ordering an entree instead. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone interested in a delicious, flavorful meal.

Yelp
21ST JULY 2021 #VEGETARIAN REVIEW# After reading some good reviews, my wife and I decided to give it a try. It's located in Covent Garden and you can see from the outside that ambience is vibrant and Indian style. We booked it in advance on a Wednesday night and got the table immediately. It looked so authentic Indian that we had high expectations. We ordered mango lassi, veg chowmein, paneer makhanwala, black dal, naan and chapati. First came the mango lassi, really good it taste but not worth the price, I think. Same taste as Nomadic mango lassi you can find in ASDA. They could have presented it a bit better in a kulhad (glass made of soil). Next was veg chowmein, well presented but TOO SALTY. I had to send it away, the manager was humble and quick to change it. The chef re did it and it was better. TASTE- I was hoping for some delicious chilly garlic style dry noodles but this was saucy. I liked it but definitely not worth £15 . A bit later the main course arrived, Paneer Makhanwala was SUPER ORANGE and Black Dal was in a tiny bowl (this was on the side) but I didn't expect it to be such a small portion. Naan and Chapati looked good. TASTE TEST - I knew Paneer was going to be a disaster by the looks of it AND, I WAS NOT WRONG. It was horrible. They should DROP IT OFF THE MENU. It's NOT worth £14. It was like eating thick tomato soup. The quality of Paneer was rubbish, they probably are using chinese version of paneer. TO MANAGEMENT, PLEASE TRY TESCO PANEER AND YOU WOULD KNOW THE DIFFERENCE. Black Dal - It was again on the salty side. We call it Dhaba style daal in New Delhi, India. I would pay £3 extra and eat from Dishoom rather than having this dal. Naan - This was lighter than air and super soft. We were happy. Chapati- Not what you would get in India but good enough for London. We were done with the food and came the bill and a feedback form. I heavily criticised the Paneer and it immediately reached the Manager. He was quick to read and action it. He came and apologized and took the item off the bill. I told him that the taste was horrible and it wasn't a great experience. He assured to discuss it with the chef. Hopefully he does. The staff and the Manager was really polite. So, to wrap up. I liked the ambiance and the service BUT NOT THE FOOD. In my experience the VEG food was a BIG let down. Would NOT recommend for veg food and will NOT visit again.

Yelp
I loved this place! Eclectic ambiance. Delicious food. Of note, everything is medium spice, except for 2 dishes. Including the kids menu. Apparently there was fish and chips for the kids and they never told us about it (the only non-spicy dish is made with dairy). Get the grand thali, so good!! Tip: if you're unsure about something they can bring a little taste tester for you! If there were better kids options I would have given it 5 stars.

Yelp
It was my third time at Masala zone but the first time in Covent Garden location. I love the decoration there ! It's really nice ! I went there to celebrate the birthday of a friend of mine. I ordered the veg samosa as starter and then the nilgiri veg green korma with garlic naan. I'm never disappointed by Masala Zone food ! It was really good and we were pretty full at the end ! However, the only bad point was the service which was a bit slow... but I Will go again to this place !

Yelp
Multi-ethnicity has always been a hallmark of London. The choices are abundant. The place was very charming, appeared to be crowded, and even though apparently a reservation would have been advantageous, the receptionist found a table for lunch. There were delicious appearing plates on neighboring tables, and the the appetizers (Dahi Puri, various Naans), the Dhaaba Lamb Rogan Josh Thali, and the Chicken Mangalore (Curry) despite 2 chili signs were very enjoyable, tasty, and round in flavor.

Yelp
We heard London serves up some of the best Indian food, so I promised hubby we would get some one of the three nights we were staying in London. I found Masala Zone's Covent Garden on Yelp and was able to book a table on Opentable. Masala Zone got good reviews and was one of the few Indian restaurants in the area that weren't ridiculously priced. The restaurant is pretty big and has cute kitschy decor. We were surprised to see that there was no tikka masala on the menu, but later found out that it actually is butter chicken (which we ordered) and that in the US they just call it tikka masala. We ordered samosas, butter chicken and chicken tikka, basmati rice, and naan. He also wanted a mango lassi but they said they were out (how can that be?!), so he got a yogurt lassi. The yogurt lassi was very refreshing and helped with the heat, but nothing can replace a mango lassi! The samosas are sold at one piece each so we each ordered one. They came out very fast and to the side of them they were served with a mix of chickpeas. The veggie samosas were good though room temp, so they were totally made ahead in a batch. They weren't spicy but the chickpea mix sure was. The butter chicken was so good! Creamy, flavorful and not too spicy. Always great to soak up extra sauce with naan and rice. I couldn't decide if I liked this or the chicken tikka more. The chicken tikka was juicy tandoori chicken served with a little side salad and an accompanying cooling green sauce. Management was very friendly and came by and chatted with us for a bit. Our server was attentive and friendly as well. Glad we found Masala Zone for a wonderful Indian dinner in London.

Yelp
This is a really great restaurant if you like Indian food or new to it. I ordered a "thali" which is a platter with different compartments of all things Indian. I ordered butter chicken and boy was that chicken tender, the rice was so good as well. I believe it is basmati which is a slighter longer grain. The only negative was the service was pretty long, almost to the point that we wanted to leave. I will say that the food is what stole the show.

Yelp
Fun place and good indian food. The locale is filled with ceiling hanging marionettes. Very picturesque. Place is packed. We ordered a sample of dishes: Chicken samosas Aloo Tikki Chaat Dahi Bhalla Dali Puri Dehli Chicken Tikka Malai Chicken Tikka likedit!!! Chicken Wrap Cheese Naan Steamed rice. Could eat the whole bowl. Washed down with Mango Bellinis, Mango smoothies, Masala Cola, tea.

Yelp
Great spot! I came alone, got friendly service at the bar. The thali plates are like an Indian buffet on a tray. For a single diner it's a great way to taste a variety without over ordering....and it forced me to eat my veggies :) Would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Awesome! Tried a few different dishes, as we ate kinda family style. Nice atmosphere. Place was packed on a Thursday evening. We waited only 5 minutes. Dahi Puri is a cool little puff filled with a kind of yogurt and Indian spices. Small, but tasty. The paneer tika dish was just OK for me as I wasn't keen on the spongy texture and the flavor profiles just weren't there. I also tried the chicken Thali which is a specialty for this restaurant. It's a plate made up of a variety of small tastes from India. Mostly curry and chutneys, rice and chicken. Not bad, but I wasn't blown away or anything. It's decent Indian food in a nice part of town with great service and fun environment.

Yelp
This was just okay - it's a large restaurant and I like the colourful decorations on the ceiling, but the dishes here were a little hit or miss for me. I love Dishoom and would rather wait an hour to eat at Dishoom than to dine here. This place specializes more in thalis, which is like a big platter with one main curry (chicken, lamb, prawn, vegetarian), small sides, dal, rice, and papadum. We were 2 people and shared one grand thali, added an extra curry, and got one appetizer, and that was enough food. We got there at 9 pm on a Friday, and were told it was a 30 min wait, but we were seated in 5 min. The host wasn't exactly the nicest or particularly helpful/friendly. Pao Bhaji - This is a spicy potato and vegetable mash with a warm buttered bread roll. At Dishoom, this is one of my favourite dishes. Here, this was disappointing to me. The mash was kind of just plopped down on the plate and was a pretty small portion - probably 1/3 or 1/2 of the mash that you get at Dishoom. and the bread didn't seem as soft and fresh as Dishoom. The bread was warm and buttered, but overall, having just eaten the Pao Bhaji the day before at Dishoom, this was really a letdown for me. I'd pass on this dish. Grand Thali - Comes with one curry (chicken, lamb, prawn, vegetarian), 2 vegetables side dishes (mainly potatoes), 1 dal/lentil, a papadum, raita, and rice. We also got an extra butter chicken curry which I liked - it was super creamy and the chicken was tender. I didn't care for the lamb, I could only taste cloves, like the sauce had an entire bag of cloves dumped in and then simmered for 10 hours. The meat itself was just okay. The vegetable dishes and dal were also just okay - nothing to write home about, as were the chapattis - they didn't seem terribly fresh or soft. All in all, I would pass on this place and won't be back. The service was just okay, the food was mediocre and not super cheap (Dishoom seems cheaper to me), and even though it's more traditional than Dishoom, I think there are probably better Indian restaurants in London if you're looking for more traditional food with curries and thalis.

Yelp
This Masala Zone location is one of seven locations that they have in London and just like every other location, they serve up some delicious - you guessed it - Indian fare to the masses. With its unique, cheerful and frankly quite amusing decor, this place won us over the moment we stepped in and we knew that we'd be in for a good meal. As we were seated and brought menus and some water, we kept looking up at the several hundred puppets from Rajasthan suspended from the ceiling. It was quite a sight to see. Covent Garden being a fairly expensive area of London, we were happy to see that they offered lunch specials; we gladly took advantage of those and were able to get a combo for £10 which included a starter and an entree. Ironically enough, because my sister lived so close and it was a great, go-to, cheap lunch, we ended up going there multiple times and were able to try quite a few dishes - especially since their combos are offered up as thalis which are a selection of small dishes served up an an entree. From their tikka malasa to their chappati, the raita, the dal, the rice, everything was always good. Especially their butter chicken. I ever tried their very unique Masala Coke which is a Coca~Cola beverage sprinkled with some Indian spices and some mint. It was uniquely refreshing albeit a bit weird. Service there is always quick, efficient and pretty attentive. The place was also very clean, spacious and convenient located. We're fans.

Adri O.

Yelp
Best Indian food in London! The thali lamb roganjosh is excellent-- I definitely recommend getting this set menu and adding the chicken korma curry as a side.

Yelp
I'm not a huge fan of Indian food, but this place has an interesting menu and a unique interior space. A bit off the beaten track in Covent Garden. Non-touristy.

Caleb M.

Yelp
Probaby the worst Indian food I've had in London. Very overrated and overpriced establishment, but perhaps the touristic location suits this. Servers are inattentive, food is unimaginative, and location is chaotic.

Yelp
This, in my opinion, is one of the few places that serves authentic Indian food without any fusion. This goes for the decor as well - no elephants and mirrors thankfully!  We decided to dine there on a whim; which meant waiting for 30 mins. on a weekday. Make reservations please! They have interesting starters and mains - though me and the husband regretted our starters. I went for Pav Bhaji - it was super tasty, but I ended up not finishing my mains. The husband ordered batter-fried prawns - a wrong choice and something that shouldn't be on the menu as it doesn't go with the overall feel of their food. Both the mains were good - lamb kolhapuri and the thali. I made a gluttonous mistake ordering a thali - but it was pretty good. The potatoes and the mangalore chicken curry were the stars! Many restaurants in India can't get the latter right, but these guys had the right consistency and taste. Bravo!  What I didn't like - they ran out of a dish for the thali, so just served the same dal in two bowls to compensate without informing us.  Service - OK. Although one lady got us a steamed hot glass for beer and then another one got us the wrong bill. The man who took our orders was friendly, courteous and keen to hear feedback. The second time.rpund, service was terrible and painfully slow. Overall - I'll go again, but on an empty stomach.

Yelp
This restaurant serves one of the best indian food in London. They have great selection of vegetarian dishes. The interior is fabulous and they have big tables for large groups.

Yelp
Service was really good, friendly staff...but food was not good. I ordered the prawn grand thali and my husband ordered the chicken grand thali and 2 chaas. The chaas was good...but the main shrimp and chicken curries were flavors not familiar to Indian food. The aloo baingan fry was ok, but the daal and bhindi curry were sub par. This place was a waste of money.

Yelp
London has so many lovely Indian restaurants to offer and this one did not disappoint at all. The ambience was superb- very eye catchy with puppet decor throughout. The servers absolutely friendly and phenomenal. Special shout out to Vishnu who treated us so well and made our experience phenomenal. The food was very authentic and flavorful. I will definitely recommend this place
google avatar

Christian P.

Yelp
Interesting Indian restaurant with a modern touch (not the typical Indian place.... more a kind of tourist-occidentalized Indian place) and consistent food. I will never understand why they make you wait before being seated when there are at least 6 to 10 tables available in different sections of the restaurant,,,, The food is OK, though a typical Indian restaurant in the Indian area is likely better and cheaper. But the experience is worth a try for sure.

Yelp
My cousins and I wandered into Masala Zone because of the smell-it was intoxicating, especially to three hungry girls. After wandering around Covent Garden, and literally running into the BAFTA's going on, we were ready for a hearty dinner and Masala Zone was perfect. We started with some vegetable samosa and naan, both of which were so fresh and chock full of flavor. We all got thali and it was the perfectly balanced and proportioned meal. The thali consists of two chutneys, two curries, rice/bread, and a spicy paste and it's a great way to sample different bits of the menu. I stuck to the spicy vegetarian curry and loved it! The restaurant is decorated with hanging Indian marionette puppets, which creates a cozy and very colorful atmosphere and is quite large. It would be a fun place for a large family/friends dinner. I am taking one star away from service as we had about four different people serve us and it became very confusing. Everyone was extremely helpful and kind but it was hard to keep everyone straight! I am sure there is other great Indian food in London, but if you are near Covent Garden Masala Zone is worth checking out.

Yelp
The best thing about London is the good quality of the restaurants. For me as a fan of the Indian cuisine i always put this restaurant in my travel agenda when i come to London. The food is extremely good and the people are very nice.

Yelp
"Great location and decor with a good menu selection" Date of Visit: 05.03.18 Time: 12.48pm Review: I know the chain owns a number of restaurants not just the Masala Zone selection but others include Chutney Mary, Veeraswamy, Amaya and Masala Grill. Now I have tried Veeraswamy so few more yet to try. A great location which soon fully filled up. Very friendly service and good portion sizes. Even though I arrived early and spent over 2 hours I had no hassle or stress and no sense I had to rush. I cannot say the same for all restaurants who should take a leaf out of this resturant's book. The food however I have a mixed thoughts about as I feel it is a little toned down to cater for the tourist trade which I guess is fine but I have eaten better and I think they may need to innovate a bit as there is a lot of competition. However it is a tried and tested taste and selection is good so cannot fault that you know what you will get and food should work for everyone even if a large group. Dress Code: No dress code Booking Process: Very easy booking process and all my details to hand. Location: 48 Floral Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2E 9DA. Tel: 020 7379 0101. Cuisine Type: Indian Parking: No parking that I am ware of but given the proximity to public transport this is a very convenient and easy to reach location. Decor & Lighting: A unique interior with a selection of dolls placed around the ceiling Decor is nice with people loving the puppets and taking photos. Lighting just right and feels intimate but big windows to watch the world go by Heating and Cooling: It was a bright and warm day but the temperature was just right inside. Ambience & Acoustics: Light background music playing but you can hardly hear it. The resturant soon filled up and nice mixture of people which I guess you would expect given the location. There is an open kitchen which is always good to see but not loud or distracting. Easy to speak and have conversations so some great acoustics. DB Level: 68.3DB Drinks: Bollywood Beats a non-alcoholic drink which was very refreshing and I had to have two. Had the following: Papadams & Chutneys: Classic Papadams served with three home made chutneys as follows: Mango which was fresh and zingy, a Red sauce which was hot and spicy and a Green sauce little kick but also nice. I was very happy with all three. Grand Thali (Non-Veg): This is a selection of items and you get to choose the main dish element (I had the butter chicken). The Chana dal nice but a little plain and very mild. Cobi Aloo was nice with a flavoursome sauce. Okra was served in a nice tomato sauce and I do not normally eat Okra so I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this and the Raita was also nice but a taste as you would expect. Butter chicken was the real disappointment as it was mild and large pieces of chicken served which was not that tasty. Onion bhaji was crispy and fried and had a classic heavy onion taste. Rice was nice but could do with more and finally the Roti was nice and thin. The dishes were nice but nothing special and just a classic taste but no fusion and nothing special to report. Desert: Desert chocolate brownie masala. Nice ice cream with hint of cinnamon but the brownie was not hot (just a little warm) with crunchy parts inside. In summary the brownie was a bit dry. I have had a lot better so would skip dessert here in the future or try a different item. Bill / Cost: £41.35 total with drinks and dessert Conclusion: Great location and decor and somewhere you take a group or someone who likes Indian food but cannot cope with anything too spicy and is not an Indian foodie. I would go again if I just wanted something quick and would put this in the same range a fast food rather than fine dining or something you would remember or want to visit specially.

Yelp
I like the decoration of the restaurant. Lot of hanging indian dolls on the ceiling. I ordered the grand thali with choice of Butter chicken difference selections. It can be a bit pricey with a big place. The portion of foods is only very small compare to the money you paid.

Yelp
The food and drinks were amazing! Service was fast and the staff was friendly. While on vacation the location was a 5 min walk from the Waldorf Hotel. We ordered the lamb sliders & chicken 65 for starters, the soldiers being our favorite. We also shared the grand thali with butter chicken which we would also recommend!

Yelp
- Extremely Bland food for an Indian restaurant - highly Overpriced for the quality and quantity - Not a single memorable dish (we ordered 9 different dishes)

Arshi S.

Yelp
Delicious authentic Indian food, nice creative cocktails, decor not tacky like some of the other restaurants. I loved that they had chapati on the menu. It's a much better experience compared to Dishoom where you have to wait till eternity to get a table. The food taste and quality is at par with Dishoom minus the wait. Would love to be back!

Yelp
This was a great spot for Indian food... I liked it so much, I actually visited this spot twice during my London stay. Each time I had their Thali option, which included a very good portion of food and I left satisfied...there are a handful of options available so you can cater it to your personal taste. The restaurant décor was also great since they had hundreds of traditional puppets hanging from the ceiling...mixed with the modern and traditional fixtures and furniture, it made for great ambiance that was cool yet warm and inviting. Located near Covent Garden, this place has a large menu with something for everyone.

Yelp
This was the worst case of shady underhanded tactics I have ever witnessed at a restaurant. I ordered a grand thali. The quality of food was exceptionally bad for Indian food, but that's not the worst folly. The Grand Thali was supposed to have pea pualo and dahi pakodi as the main items. The server brought the thali out. The lachha paratha was rubbery as if it had been cooked way earlier and had just been reheated up. The server also didn't know what item was what, since they were not well trained. As I was eating, I noticed that the alleged dahi pakodi did not have any pakodi in it and was just plain yogurt. I asked the hostess who seated me and she said that she would go in and check. In the meantime, I started eating the rice only to find that it was plain steamed rice and not pea pulao. When the waitress came back, she told me that they had run out of dahi pakodi, so they had substituted plain yogurt (without asking me or even telling me after the fact). I asked about the peas pulao, she went back, and came back and said that they ran out of peas so they substituted steamed rice (again, without asking me or telling me afterwards. Probably hoping I would not notice the two major items replaced with plain rice and yogurt). See attached pictures to see what the grand thali should contain as per the menu, and what it actually ended up being. Now when I ordered the item, I was expecting to get what was on the menu. If it was not available, they should have come back and asked me if the substitutions were alright with me or would I like to change my order. What they did actually was substitute some of the main attractions with plain yogurt and steamed rice without even telling me and hoping that I would not notice. Eventually they brought some boiled chickpeas and said that they could put that in the rice. THAT IS NOT PEAS PULAO. That would be boiled peas with steamed rice, and not a peas pulao. That would be me you ordering a hamburger, and the restaurant bringing out some boiled beef and some raw bread and calling it a day. Even after bringing these up to the attention of the staff, no sincere effort was made to replace the items with the correct items, or make any amends. This is basically cheating and fraud/misrepresentation to some degree. I am very dissatisfied. I sent them two emails with this experience hoping that at least some manager will note these transgressions against whoever was responsible and take steps to prevent other patrons from having the same experience, but no one has gotten back to me for almost a month now. Terrible experience, and no customer service whatsoever.

Yelp
Fantastic place. Definitely recommend it. Whether you are a tourist or a local - this place is awesome. Great food, great service, great ambiance. Try the chicken mangalore with plain rice. It is out of this world.

Yelp
My dad has been raving about this place for months now. When I came to visit my parents a few weeks ago, he was so excited to go sightseeing in London, just to take me to Masala Zone :)... I'm serious. I ordered the lunch special: £8.70 two courses * starter: any veg streetfood excluding grazing platter (small portion) * main course: any veg/chicken curry with rice I had no idea what to order for the "street food" portion of my meal. I ended up going with the Gol Guppa (photo posted above). I chose it because it was supposed to come with a spicy sauce, but I didn't detect much spice on my tongue... however, it was filled with strange flavors I'd never tasted before and I enjoyed the experience thoroughly! I had a Mangalore curry, which was ultra delicious (It's the one my dad kept going on and on and on and on and...ON about) My mom had one of the Grand Thali's and it was beautiful looking. The puppets that hang from the ceiling are neato. Apparently each section of puppets tells part of a story. :) The bathrooms downstairs are extremely clean and the over all feeling of the place was great. I'm sure my dad will want to drag me to go there the next time I visit....but he won't have to. Maybe I'll drag him;)

Yelp
amazing, fresh, innovative food. they were incredibly careful about avoiding my friend's allergy to lime, checking every entree to make sure it was safe for him. very good, prompt services. a large, well-appointed space with fun decor and -- MAJOR plus -- just around the corner from the Royal Opera House where we were attending a performance. a wonderful experience and not that expensive!

Yelp
Looking for someplace interesting to eat my son and I stumbled upon Marsala Zone and figured we would give it a try. The staff were very helpful explaining the dining/food options. We enjoyed diverse platters and everything was delicious. The bill was very reasonable. The interior is quite interesting with colorful dolls hanging from the ceiling and interesting masks on the walls. But it's all about the food and Masala Zone excels.

Yelp
I came here last night with some friends and I can honestly say I cant recommend this place enough. Situated in the heart of Covent Garden in Floral Street, Masala Zone is a welcoming shade of orange with a mass of Indian dolls hanging from the ceiling. Our waiter was super friendly, helpful and cute too may I add. He explained everything on the menu and was very effecient. We shared the Dali puri to start with which is an unusual starter of puffed hollow biscuits filled with chick peas mash and splashed with yogurt and chutneys £4.15 For main I had the regular prawn thali which was delicious, a thali is a stainless steel platter of small bowls of different dishes for £8.25, absolutely delicious.I cant wait to go again.

Yelp
My experience was mediocre food, at low price in a touristic location (just off Covent Garden), so I guess it's expected. It looks like the reviews are all over the map, so I'm rather confused. My party of two dined with 35 pounds, but when I got home I couldn't leave the bathroom. The rice was stale and oily, the curry and the vegetable rather bland.

Yelp
Area was swamped over the holidays and we were hungry for Indian. Nice ambiance. Excellent service. Food was standard Indian. Small plates rations, especially meat dishes. Pricey for what it is. If you feel like paying a 50 percent premium, this is your place.

Yelp
I liked this place. The ambiance is very nice. The service is good and the food is awesome. The food is very near to Indian food with the right level of spice. The restaurant is decorated with hanging Indian puppets, which creates a colorful atmosphere and the place is quite large. We were there on a Saturday evening, the waiting was for 30 mins.We ordered appetizers , chicken curry and fish curry. Everything was perfect. They have 5-6 locations and this location certainly rocks !!

Yelp
Dining here is a feast for your senses- forget old fashioned Indian restaurants with red flocking wall paper and dark furniture (YES they do still exist!). Masala Zone is located in Covent garden and the restaurant has a tasteful nod to Indian culture with the colourful Rajasthan puppets suspended from the wall. The warm orange decor provides a cool contemporary setting to enjoy fabulous Indian food. The food is really good value and I normally go for the regular chicken or lamb thali. The thali is a traditional way of eating in India and is a steel platter of various dishes including vegetables, meat/ fish curry, chapati, chutney and rice. It is great to have so many different flavours in one meal and the prices range from £7.80 to £8.25. I also recommend the prawn malai which is a prawn coconut sauce served with rice- delicious! Masala Zone is excellent value for money and a great place for lunch and dinner.

Yelp
Nice theme and approach that is different to most indian restaurants. The trouble with 'authentic' Indian cuisine is that there is such a wide variety of styles and tastes in the subcontinent that it's difficult to say that any region in particular really sums up Indian cooking. However, compared with my experience of India, it's not a bad resemblance of the food in Northern India. Chipattis where top, made with brown flower as was the Rogan Josh - lots of flavour and you could really taste the spices. Dahl was a little runny but rice was really good. To top if off they do real Indian desserts (not just Kulfi!!!), I had ice cream and Gulab Jamon which is a great way to finish a good Indian. Food came in a flash, it's clear they make everything en mass and serve it up to order. The quality is still great though. I even managed to get a photo of the dolls - nice touch. Can anyone spot which Hindu gods are represented on the ceiling for me? Oh yeah, bill came to £22 inc drink which isn't too bad at all.
