"After Ashiya and Gion, the new frontier for Hiroyuki Koshimo is Karasuma. The shop’s previous name, ‘Roiro’, meant ‘Black as Lacquer’, so Koshimo changed it to ‘Pure White’ to set a different tone. Though his technique is French, Koshimo is not limited by genre, incorporating Japanese elements to broaden the expressive range. Risotto in season, prepared with Yosano rice, is a perennial favourite in this lively and hospitable eatery." - Michelin Inspector

Visited in November 2025 for lunch. The menu included 8 savoury dishes (one was a bonus dish not included on the written menu we got) and 3 desserts. I really liked both the place and the food! The restaurant is modern and spacious and all service was done in English. Chef Hiroyuki Koshimo, senior sommelier Masahiro Kobayashi and their 2 staff present did an amazing job. My favourite dishes were the beef, green salad, and shiitake mushroom. The desserts were also great, which is a nice surprise for me, as I'm often not a fan of desserts on either Michelin or Japanese restaurants. My least favorite dish was the sakura shrimp risotto, but I am generally not a risotto fan. The home-made ginger ale was delicious! Overall, this was a good experience from start to finish: it was easy to book, easy to find the restaurant, and the meal itself was great. I wish I had the chance to come back again during a different season :) A small note: this place serves modern cuisine - a fusion of Japanese and Western ingredients and dishes. If you are looking for a traditional Japanese meal, you're better off elsewhere. But if you're lookjng for delicious food with ingredients that are not too exotic, Mashiro is great!

Simply Amazing dinning experience, all the dishes were creatively crafted with great finesse using exquisite (at times rare ingredients) to create masterpieces. Chef Koshimo is an absolute genius with his constantly changing menu & new creations, with the most warm & friendly engagement throughout the dining experience. Service staffs were also super friendly & passionate making a most lovely experience. Chef surprised us a special dessert to commemorate my son’s inaugural visit to Japan. Surprised that it’s only a One Star Michelin cos they are most deserving of Two Star. Most highly recommended

Highly recommend this Japanese-style French restaurant for everyone who travelled to Kyoto. It's been modified with Japanese characteristics, and it will bring you a totally different experience whether you are familiar with French cuisine or not. The chef is very talkative and the atmosphere is also great.

Incredible and unforgettable evening at MASHIRO Kyoto. This is an experience you do not want to miss in Kyoto!! Every dish had a lovely presentation with delicious flavors that complimented one another. The Chef was so kind and engaged with us throughout the evening. The menu he created was so delicious!! The sous chef and staff also made the experience memorable!

Google
The Michelin star for Mashiro is well deserved. Our large group thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience here. From the food to the service and atmosphere, it truly was a 5 stars experience. We have been to a bunch of 3 Michelin star restaurants in Tokyo and Kyoto, Mishiro is a standout even if it has only one star at the moment. The food was creative and delicious. Each course was beautifully presented and every dish was flavorful and cooked well. I had the non-alcoholic pairing and it was absolutely wonderful. The work in producing each drink was so involved, it was almost like cooking a separate dish. Some of our favorites were the peach and caviar. Chef was very generous with the caviar. The eel with eggplant was such a great pairing, crispy and soft together. The duck was super flavorful and tender. We watched the bread being baked during our meal. When it was served, the slices were warm, moist and chewy. Probably the best bread I've ever had. Even though the green salad looked simple, it had a variety of different textures and flavors that the meat-eating young adults we were with cleaned their plates. We would have liked to interact with the chef more but was somewhat difficult due to our language difference. The staff was attentive and efficient. We would highly recommend Mashiro and will definitely visit again when we return to Kyoto.

The chef is the most friendly Japanese chef I have ever seen. He makes even non-Japanese-speaking customers feel very welcomed. The entire dinner is like a cooking show right in front of you. You get to appreciate a lot more about fresh ingredients when everything is prepared before you. He even asked me which dish I like the most after the meal. It was a tough choice between the wagyu beef and mackerel. I would definitely go back often.

We went there in mid May 2025. A truly five star experience. Food, service and atmosphere were all excellent. The food was French-Japanese fusion. The restaurant was tightly run by the chef, sous chef and a small group of staff, and hosted by a wonderful English-speaking sommelier. A must go in Kyoto.
