Best Tacos in Dallas and Fort Worth | Eater Dallas

"This spot tucked away near the Oak Cliff nature preserve is a Mexican food gem. Order the taco plate with street tacos and one Taco Maskaras featuring carne asada, queso derretido, pico, and guac. It also has an extensive collection of lucha libre figures and characters as part of its mission to skip what it calls the decor “clichés” of Mexican spots." - Courtney E. Smith

Finally made it to this spot to try their famous tacos ahogados and quesabirria tacos — and wow, they did not disappoint. The food was absolutely phenomenal. The space is bright, clean, and welcoming, with colorful luchador masks adding a fun, unique vibe to the atmosphere. The service was just as impressive. The staff were genuinely enthusiastic, eager to share their recommendations and answer our questions, which made the experience even better. This place is a true Dallas gem — can’t wait to come back.

Before documenting my dining experience, I have to give accolades in the area of cleanliness, which was A++. The restaurant was immaculately clean: floors, countertops, drink station, every table & chair. After much research, and the desire for street tacos, I decided to visit Mask Aras. Upon entering, I noticed all of the whimsical, colorful masks, and wrestling memorabilia. It was really unique. I was eventually greeted by a friendly staff member, and I ordered the taco platter. I got the food to-go, and it came out quickly. They had multiple beverage options, both non-alcoholic & an assortment of beers (alcoholic). The food was reasonably priced, comparable to other local taco shops. The tacos were pretty good, very flavorful. Wishes: More meat. They skimped on some tacos, and I wish they had fresh limes instead of lemons. Also, the little baggies of hot sauce were difficult to open, and can become messy. Overall, I would definitely visit again, and tell a friend!

Google
The torta ahogadas reminded me of my last trip to jalisco 15 years ago. Real authentic taste. Customer service was great from the two lady's at the front. The tacos dorados ahogados woth carnitas where great to. The taste of the sauce they drown them in reminds me of my moms home cooked meals. The carne is su jugo and shrimp tacos will be my next order.

Google
I stopped by this place recently and was really impressed. The food was excellent—everything tasted great and was priced fairly for the quality and portion size. The owner and staff were friendly and made the experience easy and comfortable. The place was also super clean, which says a lot about how it’s run. Overall, it’s a solid spot. Good food, good people, and a clean setup. I’ll definitely be back.

Google
Solid lunch! Highly recommend the tacos ahogados and quesabirria. Those were the favorites among our group. Rice is good too and the fountain soda was on point lol. My dad had had the mojarra and said it was pretty good, too. Clean restaurant with clean bathrooms and friendly staff.

Google
Fantastic food and atmosphere!! Friendly staff and super clean restaurant. The birria and shrimp tacos were awesome! We also got chips and queso and loved the homemade chips. All of the salsas were 10/10! We can’t wait to come back.

Google
Good Mexican food! Wish we lived a bit closer to try more things, we ordered birria tacos and carne en su jugo- recommended by the owner, Zulma. The personal treatment we received from zulma was really nice, it’s obvious that besides de yummy food, the friendliness and service, is one of the things that sets them apart. Thanks for the recommendation! Sorry I didn’t take pictures of the food because it looks really good and I enjoyed it quickly.

Yelp
I'm typing this review as I eat my food... 10/10!!!! The owner was kind and made great recommendations to my dad and I. I felt like I was back in Guadalajara We had the quesabirria tacos, camarón zarandeado tacos, sope de tinga and the taco eclipse (the empty plate) LOL everything was perfectly seasoned, and their 3 sauces was incredible. i'll be back to try more on the menu.

Yelp
I'm going to be honest nothing that we bought here was really any good. First of all they use store bought tortillas, they don't make their own tortillas. The carne asada tacos just lacked flavor and they were not memorable at all. The carnitas adobo were the same, just lacked. The rice and beans were lame as heck, again lacking flavor. The birria taco wasn't anything special either. The guy that took my order was nice and friendly. The restaurant was clean, but honestly the food is really mediocre. From a boy from the hood in the Oak Cliff area I would say nah!!
google avatar

Joyce I.

Yelp
Asked for birrera no cheese and got cheese. They put the smallest sprinkle of cilantro and onion for 3 large tacos. Like Come on that wasn't enough for one taco... The burrito with Fajita was mid. The plastic dishes gross me out. They look greasy and unsanitary.. the place looks clean and the salsa is pretty good. We prob won't be back but not the worst we have had!

Yelp
I did not have high hopes when friends recommended we go here. I could not have been more wrong. The food is incredible. Full stop. The food at hole-in-the-wall restaurants is usually good, but this place has everything. The rice and beans at most places is an afterthought. The rice and beans here were wonderful. The doors and tacos were incredible. The burritos are enormous and flavorful. To top all of that off, the decor of the restaurant is SO FRIGGIN COOL!!! The luchador theme could have been ridiculous or terribly done, but I was in awe. The design of the restaurant makes you want to learn more and look at everything. The owner of the restaurant could not have been nicer. Not only did they explain the history of the food, but we're very patient and accommodating. We had such an amazing time. We'll definitely be back.

Yelp
I decided to stop and try this place since its been advertised a lot. Birria tacos were very salty, the carnitas i didnt even try them. The queso had a lot of coriander. The front lady was very nice , the restaurant was clean but food was simply not good.

Yelp
Just not great. We came here bc we've been looking for a good, nearby spot for Birria or Quesabirria tacos. This was on a few lists and nearby! The vibe inside is interesting. A little overboard and little sterile feeling, but you can tell they're putting in effort so maybe it's just not my vibe. I get that they're trying to stay on theme but the color scheme just isn't appetizing. As far as food - my wife actually really liked the Birria Tacos. They weren't my fav but the consomé was pretty good. Everything else was really disappointing. I got the carne asada tacos and they were just really unappetizing. I'm left two on the plate. They tasted kind of like cardboard. Maybe a little old? Tortillas too. Just tasted very plasticky - Idk how else to describe it - and the rice and beans tasted kind of like canned/packaged food. Im not saying that's what they're serving, but that's what the taste reminded me off. All this was $30.

Yelp
We ended up here yesterday before going to the costume store. It's Luche Libre themed. Mask decorations throughout the place. I got the birria tacos. My husband and son got quesadillas and daughter got a bean and cheese burrito. I'm like...why.. I can make y'all quesadillas at home!!! but okay. Critter control walked in and husband thought they were eating. So I think once he seen them coming in with a big stick and a ladder, he just ordered anything in a quick panic. My birria tacos were good. Full of flavor. I liked the consomme that went with it. My husband was too worried about the critter that they was trying to retrieve from the ceiling. All I could picture was a rat jumping from the hole and running into the dining room and my husband wigging out..lmao. I'm not sure what it was. We didn't stick around to find out. Probably a racoon or maybe even a snake if they needed that big ol stick and a bag. Maybe should of closed while they did it, but oh well. I would come back, but I'm not sure if my husband will!! lol

Yelp
We LOVE Maskaras! The food is DELISH and owners Zulma and Rodolfo are also two of the most genuinely kind humans you'll ever meet, if their incredible food didn't keep us coming back a couple times per month their kindness alone would! First, the restaurant is always immaculately clean from the entrance all the way back to the visible open kitchen area. As far as ambiance and interior, your eyes are treated to Dallas' own unofficial Lucha Libre museum with hundreds of authentic and historic artifacts and memorabilia! Worth the visit alone. Either Zulma or Rodolfo greets you upon arrival with genuine happiness to see you and they are eager to answer any questions you might have about their authentic Guadalajaran dishes (NOT Tex-Mex, y'all!) - simply everything I've tried in my dozens of visits is delicious but my go-to has to be the quesabirria tacos with consumé. Compared to the very greasy versions you see all over town (I know that is the appeal for some folks, not me) - the Maskaras version is still hearty & fresh while being very bright/clean on the palate almost like rich beef Phô broth. Served with optional sliced radish, onion, cilantro, and lime - I add it all plus the green homemade hot sauce and I'm in HEAVEN. I order three tacos for dinner and the amount is perfect without leaving miserably full! My spouse is also loyal to her order, the equally delicious enchiladas with salsa verde. The marinated shredded chicken is INSANELY good. We also love the drowned tacos, and the desserts! Sopapillas AND fried Oreos? YES PLEASE. Don't forget drinks! Traditional mixed drinks are delicious and served in generous portions. My fav is the Cazuela de Guadalajara, served in a traditional clay container and big enough for two! So fresh and delicious! Please give this place a try and show our favorite local gem some love!

Yelp
The food was great, the environment was clean, inviting and fun and the customer service was AMAZING!!!! They made our family gathering here such a great experience. I wish they had a location in San Diego, but I'll definitely be back when I'm back in town.

Maria G.

Yelp
First: the food! Everything we had was fantastic. We tried the pico and chips, enchiladas, birria tacos, and tacos mascaras. Everything was fresh and made in house. The staff couldn't have been more welcoming. They speak perfect English and Spanish. The decor was adorable! While we ate, a man came in who had wandered off from his care facility. The owner could not have been more empathetic. He helped the man get in touch with his caregivers and offered him free food and drinks! I would definitely recommend this place for authentic Mexican food!!

Yelp
10/10! The atmosphere was chill, the food was immaculate, and the service was speedy and friendly!

Yelp
I was craving birria tacos, so naturally I look on yelp for the best rated birria tacos in Dallas. I've already been to a few places that I really enjoyed, but I haven't found one that absolutely sticks. Upon walking in the restaurant, I felt I was transported into Mexico. It was so bright & colorful, and featured posters, memorabilia & different types of Masks (hence the name of the restaurant). The owner was handling the register and he was such a delight to talk to. He is originally from Guadalajara, MX therefore most of the menu is inspired by that. My fiancé had the fried fish (tilapia) & I tried the birria (one with white cheese & the other with cheddar cheese , as well as the shrimp taco with white cheese. Neither of us were disappointed! The food tasted authentic & very flavorful, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the tilapia. The cazuela drink is also a staple in Guadalajara & I highly recommend ordering that if you visit. Be warned it is served in a huge bowl, but it's honestly so good you will more than likely finish it. My only con was the consome was a bit on the salty side and I would have liked it to be a bit thicker (my preference). Other than that I will certainly be back! Service is a 10/10.

Yelp
What a great local joint with a fun atmosphere! A little out of the way but the food was worth the drive. Order at the counter when you walk in - the street tacos were some of my favorites in Dallas.
google avatar

Jose T.

Yelp
Quesabirria tacos were good but they missed on the consommé! It was more of a beef broth and not true consommé. I also ordered a carnitas taco, probably not their specialty cause it came out salty! Still gave them 4 stars cause the place is very clean and the lady/owner was very friendly. If I'm in the area, I'd probably come back again.

Michelle V.

Yelp
Cool place with wrestling theme. Owners are always available and very kind. The food is ok. Chips and salsa are not what you go for. However the Birria queso tacos are the best, Seriously!
google avatar

Cynthia C.

Yelp
You wouldn't believe this place would be in a small strip shopping mall...the outside is very misleading...but when you walk in its nothing but that...it's very clean...very welcoming...especially with all the Maskaras luchadores decor..it's amazing! We've been here ones and we were treated very well.. the food is fantastic! It's a must try for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
So good!!! I had the doors and the birria quesadilla. 100% recommend. Felt very authentic.
google avatar

Martin K.

Yelp
Amazing Quesabirria tacos. Nicely seasoned with a consome that's just right. Ratio between fat, salt and liquid is perfect. One of the best I've had.
google avatar

Monika G.

Yelp
The first time I had the pleasure of trying quesabirria tacos was at this establishment, and I was thoroughly impressed. The attentive staff provided excellent service, with a minimal wait time. I would rate both the service and the food a perfect 10/10. I make it a priority to visit this establishment during my frequent trips to Dallas.
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
One of the best more traditional Mexican food places. Not big on ambiance unless you love wrestlers. But the food is absolutely perfect. Love this so much I often walk in and let them make what they suggest for the day. No Texmex here. Don't have it don't expect it. But do expect amazing food.

Jose V.

Yelp
La comida y su atención al cliente todo perfecto todo muy bien volveremos a ir más veces

Yelp
Food is really good! Service is gracious and efficient. Highly recommend this spot!!!

Yelp
This place is overrated. We didn't like the service from the female cook and the owner lady. This was our first time here. Hubby ordered regular birria tacos and he asked the owner which she took our order if the birria was in caldo (consume) she said no. Once his plate came out tacos were soggy the corn tortilla tore apart. The rice had too much garlic seasoning. Hubby talked to the owner about the birria meat being too juicy that his tacos came apart. She didn't seem to care and didn't even offer him something else in exchange like different tacos. We won't be back. You think they would want to please the customer.
google avatar

Isabella J.

Yelp
The food here is wonderful. I have been here before, and it is always consistent and it is always consistent. Their tortas and quesadillas are super good. They also have nice salsas provided at the tables. The workers are super friendly and check on you to make sure everything is going well. The restaurant is very unique and has a lot of old wrestling masks on the wall. It's very fun to eat here because there are so many things to look at.

Jasmin G.

Yelp
Just had this place today and totally regretted it. The service was great, however the food quality was poor. The guacamole tasted like it was store bought, the rice wasn't good, and the meat was a weird colored. Almost like the food wasn't cooked properly. The onions, cilantro, and other toppings were not fresh and i found the onions to be a little slimy. Overall, this place is way too overpriced for the quality.
google avatar

Erica S.

Yelp
Hidden gym of Oak Cliff! If you are looking for delicious Mexican (NOT Tex-Mex!) food in the area, look no further! My husband and I stumbled across Maskaras on our second night living in the area and have come back countless times. The staff are always friendly, the service is quick, and the food is delicious! We usually get the quesabirria tacos with birria broth and chips and guacamole. So incredibly good! This is the spot we always bring out of town guests. Already looking forward to our next visit! Tips: This restaurant is usually pretty quiet with plenty of seating so it is a great place for a conversation. Also, plenty of parking spots out front!
google avatar

Alison S.

Yelp
My colleague and I met for a late lunch. The restaurant was packed with people laughing and what looked like really enjoying their food; which makes sense to me because mine was delicious. I had tacos de birria which was flavorful, crunchy, and very satisfying. The service was prompt after ordering our food up front. If you are annoyed by or don't like wrestling culture of Mexico you may not enjoy the atmosphere but I think it is really fun. I'll be back.

Jay M.

Yelp
Service is great and upbeat but that is it... the worst queso i have ever had. I purchased 5 tacos and left 3 1/2 despite being hungry. Tacos without limes? Also the meet did not seem high quality and very greesy. I really wanted to like this place but it is no bueno. $45 down the toilet!
google avatar

Brashay C.

Yelp
I ordered 5 "steak" tacos on corn. The steak tasted like ground chicken & the corn tortillas weren't cooked - I'm 100% certain the cook grabbed the tortillas from a bag & threw the meat into each tortilla without frying the tacos at all. The staff was friendly but if you prefer a hot/cooked taco I wouldn't recommend.
google avatar

Lizeth N.

Yelp
My coworker had l mentioned this place to me & so I had to come check it out. The place is nice & clean. Everyone makes you feel welcomed. We didn't know what to order so we got some tacos de birria. My dad, brother, sis in law & baby niece were with us so that's why the receipt was so long. But overall the food is yummy. The tacos are so filling because they are not stingy with their meat. We will definetly come back to try more of their food. Nice little spot. :)

Amanda K.

Yelp
4.5 stars New favorite Mexican restaurant! Their tacos are some of the best we've ever had in Dallas. Some favorites we ordered were the Birria beef tacos, spicy zarandeado shrimp tacos, & tacos ahogados (drowned tacos). The staff recommended we try the carne su jugo, which was a delicious soup. Also, the margaritas were great and the cazuela was a fun drink to share. Very friendly staff and delicious food! Highly recommend. Will definitely be back with friends!

Yelp
have been looking for a good Mexican place for over a year. Finally today we found this amazing place. Award winning, nationally recognized humble spot that features delicious food from Guadalajara is a must!! The owner Rudolfo and his wife are genuine, friendly, generous people. They understand customer service and excellence. It was such a pleasure to spend just a few minutes with them while they explained the menu to us and took care of my child's needs. Leadership and service comes from the top down. Everyone who weekend there took great care of us. Tho the menu is concise is is specialized. No matter what you order you won't be disappointed!! The rice and beans were a side but full of flavor and can stand on its own. The chille relleno is as it should b.not pretentious. Just the right amount of batter on the out side. The perfect cheese inside. This is my standard test you see if i will like a restaurant. And it's a "i wish my stomach was bigger all u can eat more place". The enchiladas looked amazing The star to us their birria tacos. They have a 4 taco platter. One had white cheese with shrimp. The cheese was just melt enough. The shrimp was juicy and succulent. I've had meat of choice white cheese. One had meat of choice with cheddar cheese. One was meat. Tacos are served with onion, Cilantro and lime. It was enough food for my hungry husband. The birria sauce is not like a sauce. Instead it's a bowl of delicious soup. We were taught that you are supposed to take a bite of taco, drink some soup, repeat, listen to the music and before you know it you will start dancing!! Every bite was followed by a silent and very contented happy dance. If you like spicy they have 3 Dufferent salsas. The mild was was flavorful. The green was delicious with a tiny kick and their spicy was oooooo so gooood!! Def try just a little at first. All the were so flavorful and the perfect compliment to any of the food we ordered. We forgot to take photos of the food but it was delicious to the eyes also! They also carry a beer from Guadalajara that's worth trying. My friends who ordered it were not disappointed! Under$150 for drinks including alcohol and 5 ppl to be full and satisfied was a pretty good deal. Worth every penny. Everyone left asking when are we coming back again?! If you like amazing authentic Mexican (not tex mex) with a clean atmosphere good music, excellent cuisine service and mouth watering food then cube here! Nothing fancy. Just an amazing experience.

Amy N.

Yelp
Micheladas are great as well there birria tacos, the owner politely seated me and welcomed me they are very nice and sweet! Food was great !!

Yelp
First of all, this is the coolest place, especially if you are a fan of Lucha Libre. It is filled with luchador masks. It's a really bright and fun place. The employees are patient and nice. They are totally social distancing, cleaning between guest, wearing masks. Now to what you really care about: the food! I had a classic street taco(carnitas). Extremely flavorful and juicy. I also had a beef birria taco. I don't know how they stay crispy, but they do. Yum! I got to taste the drunken taco, and I have no words. They have this margarita that comes ina bowl. It's so light that you will suck it down before you know it, and you will be light on your feet LOL. We also had the queso. It was good, but reminded me of Velvetta cheese. I mean it was good to me. My husband got the taco platter that had lime 7 street tacos. He thoroughly enjoyed it. The beans and rice are decent. I highly recommend this authentic Mexican restaurant.
google avatar

Amanda V.

Yelp
COVID: So impressed with how clean the place is. Really nice and clean, tables, floors, the entire restaurant. Staff is wearing masks and they clean in between very swiftly! Sanitizing in between customers. The tables are staggered and safely spaced out for safety. So cool to have luchador stuff everywhere. The owner is so friendly and answered all of my questions. They have so much to try from. Tacos de birria, street tacos, flautas, deep fried desserts, & fun drinks. The chips and queso is like the stadium like cheese with some good meat & tomato added with green & red chips. The taco plater is a sample of each type of taco served in a fun tray. The tacos de birria is really good! Fresh, crisp, cheesy and good! Can't wait to come back and try the flautas or the maskaras tacos!

Fredo T.

Yelp
I've lived in Texas going on 11 years and this is honestly the best Mexican food I've had! I'm from Los Angeles so we set our standards high! I had given up on Mexican and Tex-Mex altogether because it seems like none of the restaurants here take the time to season their food correctly or marinate the meat properly. Maskaras has given us hope again! The food is delicious! You can tell they take their recipes serious and the customer service is amazing! The owners are always present and pleasant which was a plus. The staff is always helpful and checking to see if everything is ok. I stop in at least once a week now because I'm addicted! Great food and great customer service with nice music...it's a WIN, WIN, WIN!!!

KC B.

Yelp
Street taco plate very tasty. Mexican food different in Dallas vs accustomed So CA benchmark, not better/worse, just different. Enjoyed. Nice conversation with owner about wrestling passion and collection.

Yelp
Excellent service good food friendly environment the best Mexican food ever hands down

Yelp
Great place to eat. Interesting and different ambiance. Masks is their thing. No complaints

Yelp
Best tacos ahogados with va pulled pork!!! I took to long to come and try myself. 5 stars!!! From food service and cleanliness

J C.

Yelp
A great experience starts with the interaction with the order taker. Fortunately for us, it was the owner. He was so courteous and nice. He had great recommendations and made me and my family feel so welcome. He gave us a little background on the decor and his passion for wrestling. We are already starting out outstanding. I ordered the taco eclipse, taco Maskaras and one texabirria. Let me tell you they were all awesome. Salsas - Green - great, Red, even better and he had a super spicy red that was very delicious. Tacos were presented so well and looked amazing. His staff very courteous and food came out hot and fresh. I had a peach margarita while not the best it was still pretty damn good. lol. My family tried the tacos dorados, taco platter and everyone loved it. We had fried Oreos for dessert and we were so satisfied and enjoyed our Friday night out. We drove about 30-45 mins to come here and I was not disappointed. Great place. We even took pictures with all their memorabilia. Can't say enough about this place. It's very casual and my family loved it. I wasn't disappointed with any part of my experience here. While we live quite far, we will definitely make more visits to Maskara's. Thanks for a great evening out with my family!

Yelp
We are from Los Angeles and have been in Texas for 3 months now . Let me tell you, Iv never felt more like home ! This place is great ! The Birria .... ON POINT! The tacos ... PERFECT! The kids plate with rice and beans ... 5 YEAR OLD approved ! We will definitely be back ! 10/10 !

Yelp
Oh my goodness, my wife and I love Maskaras!! The service is warm and friendly. We always feel like we're with family when we order and interact with the staff. They have done an amazing job decorating the restaurant and creating an incredible ambience with the music and the decor. All that aside, we are fanatics for their food. The quesabirria tacos (and even the quesabirria burrito) are to die for. We love their chips and guacamole as well as the variety of sauces available to put on the tacos. The dishes pack both flavor and authenticity into every bite and you eat until you can't take another bite...then you take one more.
google avatar

Freedom G.

Yelp
this was our first visit to Maskaras and we'll definitely be back again soon! The space was clean, well lit and expertly decorated in their cute theme, but most importantly the tacos were delicious and service was excellent I also loved the roasty red salsa, fried tortilla chips and chile relleno. We should have taken pictures but the food disappeared off our table so fast! maskaras brings authentic home style Mexican cooking to a scene that desperately needed it!

Arturo R.

Yelp
The food was very tasteful and presentation was good, but the service could use some help. And the prices are a little too crazy for the amount of food I received. Took it as paying more for flavor and quality, then I was for quantity.

Mark B.

Yelp
Such wonderful authentic food with a fun casual atmosphere. I am so lucky to live close

Casey C.

Yelp
Food was delicious and great service. I can see why Maskaras was featured on Netflix. The 35 minute drive was worth the trip. Atmosphere was so fire with the displays of wrestling masks and photos.

I went with my wife yesterday and everything was amazing. If you are a lucha libre fan or an authentic Mexican Restaurant this is the place. We had some Birria Tacos, some Chicken Tinga quesadilla and some chips and queso. Everything was absolutely to die for. The food amazing, service amazing, decorations amazing, clean, overall everything was great. I have been a fan of lucha libre all my life and seen a place like this I absolutely fell in love with. To end our experience I bought a Laredo kid x La Parka mask. Definitely not the last time we will be visiting, super humble Fui con mi esposa en el día de ayer, y nuestra experiencia fue increíble.
