"Matchbox Restaurant Group has a new owner: Thompson Hospitality, the force behind several other area restaurants, reports Washingtonian. Thompson, which backs D.C. restaurants like Hen Quarter and American Tap Room, has pledged at least $11 million to grow the Matchbox brand. The plan for Matchbox is a slower expansion (think, two or three new restaurants opening in a year, not five), and smaller future restaurants. The existing restaurants will likely get a refresh, in keeping with modern decor trends. In her report, Jessica Sidman notes that Thompson has plenty of experience with “non-traditional locations,” like airports and college and corporate campuses, which may be something Matchbox gets into in future. Matchbox’s past few years certainly haven’t been the group’s best. Last May, workers at the Matchbox’s 14th Street NW location accused the restaurant of retaliatory firings (they were fired within weeks of taking off work to participate in the Day Without Immigrants demonstration.) And in 2016, a leadership shakeup ousted the group’s founders; things got particularly rough during a lawsuit over the changes in 2017." - Alison Baitz

The food and service was great! Make sure to make a reservation before getting here because it does get packed, resulting in a long wait time. The pizza was just amazing. Fresh and hand made. You can literally sit by the pizza station and see how your pizza is made. If you go here, you must try the spinach dip. It is one of their top apps and it is 100% worth it. Also the sliders with a pile of crispy onion rings is definitely worth a try. Highly recommend! Will return here when I am in the area.

Food it was delicious and service was excellent. At first our calamari appetizer's portion was smaller than we thought it would be. We decided not to anything since it wasn't that big of a deal, but the manager happened to come over to us to inquire about everything and ended up giving us another order of calamari for free! If you like pasta and meatballs, I highly recommend the gigantic meatball and pasta entree! It's a grand amount of food and the meatball is HUGE, tender, juicy, and delicious! My boyfriend had the Lobster Pizza which he also enjoyed!

Enjoyed a mid-week happy hour at Matchbox. The bartender Charlie was very welcoming and did a great job of checking in throughout my visit to make sure everything was good. I originally had planned to sit outside on the patio when I arrived because it was a beautiful day, but when I walked in I decided to grab a seat at the bar because the interior of the building was gorgeous. There are two floor, and the layout and design are stunning. The food and drinks were just as impressive as the ambiance. To drink I enjoyed the Fire Pit Pounder which was a good balance of tart and sweetness. For food I had the Happy Hour Margherita Pizza, which was made with super fresh ingredients, including crushed tomatoes, basil, mozzarella, and swirls of Olive Oil. I will definitely be making my way back here for a full dinner experience.

I absolutely love all you can eat small plate dining establishments. Matchbox now has this option for brunch. My boyfriend and I were excited about trying out their extensive menu. They have your traditional brunch favorites like chicken and waffles, a variety of scrambles, and sides. But you can also get one of their numerous personal thin crust pizzas. We enjoyed our experience, our waitress, Christin was excellent, but there was nothing special about the food. The only item that made me do the happy dance and hum with every bite was the lemon pound cake "French toast", which was actually a scrumptious piece of cake!

Went there for Sunday brunch and happy that the wait was not long and food was great. I actually didn't like the cinnamon roll with cream and strawberry; the server recommended it but it's too sweet for my taste. Other than that the family enjoyed everything except the coffee they could've done better (tastes like water) but hay they're not coffee shop right 🙄

Excellent service. August was a fantastic, attentive server with helpful suggestions and a great attitude. The spinach artichoke dip was our favorite - so creamy and flavorful! Decent portion sizes too. We will definitely be back.

Trendy restaurant with really cool modern industrial decorations. They have an endless brunch menu or an a la carte option. The steak and eggs is really good. The chilaquiles on the other hand are more similar to nachos. Good for big groups or dates.

First off.. they should ask if you've ever been there before and if you haven't been, they should really explain how the brunch box works. My daughter had one little muffin which ended up costing $32!!! The pizza was on the same menu which I thought was going to be included and as you can see, it wasn't!! Never spent $95 on breakfast for 2 people!! Not even in Vegas which was an all you can eat buffet!! They don't have to worry about me ever coming back!!
