The Newest Restaurants In Chicago - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Matilda is a new sit-down restaurant in River North with Mexican and Peruvian dishes. You can expect appetizers like Baja-style scallops, octopus, and white fish or tuna tartare, along with a mix of stewed meats, tacos, and larger plates like lomo saltado or paella. And in the basement, they have a cocktail lounge called Clandestino." - john ringor, nick allen

The 23 Best New Restaurants In Chicago - Chicago - The Infatuation

"This Mexican-Peruvian restaurant in River North is loud and lovely, especially when you want to drink Mexican wine, wave around a tostada for emphasis while you talk, and hang somewhere busy but not chaotic. The small plates have unexpected touches that lean more “oh, that’s nice, I like that” than “oh, how…creative.” The crispy cheese crust on the carne asada taco reminds us why “extra toasty” Cheez-Its exist, and we enjoy fishing for caramelized pear in the scallop aguachile’s thick lychee ponzu broth. Just note that the bare space and concrete-looking, curved walls amplify sound, which means you might be shout-chatting with the person across from you." - adrian kane, john ringor, nick allen, adrian kane, nick allen, nick allen, john ringor, john ringor, nick allen, john ringor, nick allen, nick allen, nick allen, john ringor, john ringor, john ringor, john ringor, john ringor, adrian kane, john ringor, john ringor, john ringor, john ringor, john ringor, john ringor, john ringor

I had an amazing experience thanks to Nelly, our server! She was incredibly friendly, attentive, and made us feel so welcome from the moment we sat down. She got every order right, gave great recommendations, and checked in at just the right times. Her positive attitude and professionalism really stood out and made our meal even better. Thank you, Nelly, for the outstanding service!

Google
Real nice place. Especially if you’re a Michigan Alum. It’s the Michigan Alumni bar! I’m a Spartan, and still give this a 5 star, GO Green! It’s cool spot and ambiance and nice outdoor seating with good food!

Google
Really awesome neighborhood bar and restaurant. the food never disappoints - I especially love the pretzel (best in lakeview), pizza (lots of good options), and bang bang shrimp tacos ($3 taco tuesdays!). Baby Altas in the basement, when it's open, is such a fun/unexpected little DJ dancing vibe too and it's awesome to be able to come upstairs, get a snack, then continue dancing til 4am 😁 (my only critical comment is just from looking through their other reviews and I see they left a very rude defensive reply to someone. Even if they disagree, not a good look and kinda gives me the ick about the management whoever they are😬)

Went for $10 burger deal on Monday and had an amazing time. The service from our wonderful waiter Will made it a fantastic experience! Would come back again

Google
Review your checks closely! Was overcharged approximately $35 for a round of drinks we never ordered. Attempted to call to fix the problem but couldn’t get in touch with anyone. Then tried to fix with my credit card company (to no avail). When I called Matilda back and finally spoke to, who I assume was, a manager I was accused of trying to cheat them out of the money. His rationale was “the bar only charges for drinks that are ordered.” Well, we never ordered the additional round. The manager stated he “had to think” about a solution and would call me back. He never did. Food is good and atmosphere is fun, I won’t take that away from them. But there are plenty of other great bars and restaurants in the neighborhood. I would encourage folks to check out the others and skip Matilda. Edit: The timeline was not seven weeks as the owner claims in his reply. A more accurate timeframe was 3-4 weeks when I was finally able to talk to someone at Matilda after attempting to contact them multiple times. And it was during a busy time of year (Christmas). This review is coming seven weeks after the event.

Google
I LOVE Matilda’s! I frequent this place often, and they’re extremely inclusive and kind. I went to a prom themed event and really vibed with Nelly! They’re super kind and really knew all the frequent customers well, and it made me feel really welcome!

Google
i love it here. i’ve been here a few times just going out and had the absolute best experience here. But i recently celebrated my birthday at back bar and i couldn’t recommend jt enough. Matilda staff made the cutest custom cocktail menu, let us decorate, and we’re all and all so accommodating. The bartenders here are so fun and such a vibe. all of our guests has nothing but positive things to say. 10/10 experience !! thank you matilda’s !!! (also we ordered food and it was gas)

Google
Taco Tuesday is a great deal, their burger is char-grilled, and the tiki drinks are well-balanced and delicious! I especially loved the fresh oregano in the salsa on my fish taco.

Yelp
If you're looking for a cozy neighborhood tavern then check out Matilda! The eclectic pub menu paired well with signature cocktails. They also had an amazing rotation of brews. I loved the ambiance with muted grays and gold to simulate a chemical reaction of chrome and zinc . I loved the fireplace nook. My friends and I enjoyed the music while we waited for our drinks and food. My friends loved the delicious thin crust gf ; meat wave pizza. Those giordano peppers added some heat ! Another friend raved about his Philly cheesesteak. I look forward to checking out Matilda again. The service and staff were so welcoming and helpful.

Yelp
Ugh. Unfortunately, I have always had a lot of problems coming here. My boyfriend is in the neighborhood so we tried it out a few times. Every server we've had is good, but it's now been twice that we've seen who we think is the manager scream at the other workers. Like. Loud, scary screaming. It makes our visit wildly uncomfortable. The poor girl who was serving us the first time was shaking as he walked away. Neither of us have ever heard an employer talk to employees like that, especially in front of customers. Absolutely insane behavior. I couldn't believe it happened again when we came back. Food was okay, but plates, glasses, and silverware were sticky. Again, every server we've had does a good job. However, the manager's behavior to his employees goes so far beyond the pale of what anything I've experienced. So, so bad, and creates a horrible environment for a dinner.

Yelp
Another amazing visit to Matilda! This is going to be a new regular spot. The burrata bruschetta was so delicious, it's a must order! The cocktails were phenomenal as well. The service is always great here. We ordered a crispy chicken sandwich to split and they brought it out on two separate plates for us. The servers go above and beyond!

Yelp
I have been to Matilda on a few occasions and always have a good time! They have a wide variety of beers on tap (along with bottled) which is really nice. In addition, they have trivia on Tuesday nights that is a lot of fun (especially during the summer). I also enjoy their food - I typically get the quinoa burger or a wrap. Definitely a great spot for a bite to eat or for drinks with friends!

Yelp
Matilda is an amazing place! The service is especially of note. Mason is a star!!! The Sheffield n berries is a true must have!

Yelp
I walk by all the time but have only had drinks until recently. Prior to a concert we stopped for dinner and drinks. We sat outside and enjoyed everything we had. I will definitely be back to check out more of the specials!

Yelp
Vibes were good. Drinks were delicious. The menu had different seasonal items than their website. Sharing for those that like to check out the options before they arrive, like me

Zoe C.

Yelp
So disappointing. The service was appalling and that's being polite! We went last night and the place was busy with one server who we didn't see for over 20 minutes. When I walked up to the bar to order drinks the guy messing around on his phone said the server would be with us shortly. She wasn't. A group of 4 people asked the bar tender to send someone to them to take an order and eventually gave up and walked out. The food is average at best and took a long time- the excuse was there was only one person in the kitchen. With so many fabulous places in the area, my suggestion would be " give this place a miss and try and find a place that wants customers and will serve them food and drinks in a semi timely manner". I used to love this place years and years ago but it has gone down hill. Don't waste your time.

Yelp
Great spot to watch a Michigan football game! Elevated bar food - the Brussels were a fan favorite at our table. The drink menu is extensive and delightful.

Yelp
Just ate at matilda's and I loved it!!The food was so so good and the works and boos amazing. Our waiter was named Chris and he was awesome loved him

Yelp
Love this spot! Especially the servers and bartenders. Mason makes great cocktails! They take great care of their customers.

Yelp
This is a great place when you are in the neighborhood and needing some good food and beer! It's a fun spot, with great music and the staff feels like a family. SERVICE: When we sat down the waitress Roxy was so attentive and helpful. Everything we ordered came out hot and we enjoyed her personality!! WHAT I ORDERED: The cheese curds and the lemon honey Brussels are must have appetizers! The ricotta and hot honey pizza is perfect and we tried the gluten free crust which was great! We also had the farmers choice salad and the atlas burger. A great weeknight spot! RESTAURANT VIBE: Loud from music but not overly loud. It's a tad dark inside but it didn't bother us! Lots of seating and there's a speakeasy/club downstairs!!
google avatar

Maggie D.

Yelp
We stopped in here for a late night bite and a sit-down place to have a drink. I first asked the waitress what the gluten-free options were, and she seemed to try to avoid the question and didn't help with ordering with dietary restrictions. I ended up finding a gluten free pizza and it did turn out pretty good. I ordered a glass of red wine and when the waitress set it down, it had an ant crawling around the outside of the glass! My friends ordered waffle fries and a pizza of their own. There are plenty of board games here which made a fun night. Overall, the idea of a bar with games is very fun, but the staff wasn't great or clean.
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
The food was pretty good. The waitress was nice but definitely busy... kind of a grunge vibe inside but a good spot nonetheless

Yelp
Went for a Michigan game since it's an alumni association sponsored bar and they were not equipped to serve the amount of people who were there. They had one server for a room of about 80 people. We ordered domestic bottles before kick off and didn't get them until the second quarter. One person at our table didn't get a cocktail ordered before kick off until halftime. Food was served quickly but without utensils, and water was difficult to get. I felt so bad for the server getting absolutely bombarded by every table, but she kept her cool and was as helpful as possible. They have good food and drink specials, just need to staff accordingly for game days.

Yelp
I ordered the THC shot which was labeled $4 on the menu. Bartender bullied me into paying $10. I paid cash too so I'm assuming he just put one of those $5 bills in his pocket. Well that little stunt cost you hundreds bc I'm NEVER spending another penny in there ever again. My friend and I were going to make that our spot too since he just moved 2 blocks away. No way in hell that would have happened to me if I were a man. Happy pride AH. GFY Edit: (in response to their response) If I ask a bartender if I can just get the THC shot as a shot, then that is the time to tell me you charge 2.5 times as much for the shot than what is listed on the menu. Or put that info on the menu in a font big enough for ppl to be able to read it. I wanted it as a shot bc I'm diabetic and didn't want to drink a sugar filled cocktail with it. No way is the regular price of your shots $10. If I'm paying the same price no matter what, I could have just given the mocktail to someone else. Total rip off. PS what the hell kind of response is: we don't train our staff to treat women differently? Does that even make sense? Yup, not doing anything totally dismantles all the BS in the world. Your response is dismissive and you shouldn't trick ppl into paying $10 for a shot

Yelp
Decided to try this place out a few weeks ago for taco Tuesday and will not be coming back. The drinks were OK food was pretty good but pricey. Our sweet waitress was doing a great job but was suddenly yelled at by a big dude who we then learned was the owner of the restaurant. Felt so bad for her as she was doing great and was very sweet.
google avatar

Bessy T.

Yelp
Bit expensive. $50 for wings, brussel sprouts and a small salad. The wings had good flavor (got the lemon pepper), a bit oily. Brussel also had good flavor, could be crispier
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
I love this place! Roxy is literally the best bartender ever, so sweet and attentive! I tend to be picky but she was so kind, I couldn't ask for more! My friends got engaged and celebrated here after and it could not have been better. A total sweetheart and a wonderful bar!!

Yelp
My friends and I purchased tickets to an event that hosted check-in at this place. We were the first three people to arrive at 3:15p. Upon arrival, we inquired about food and drinks while we waiting for things to begin. We were told by one Waitress that we had to wait until 4pm to place food orders but was able to order drinks which we were okay with. As other people begin to flow in, we began to notice kitchen staff bringing food out to tables. We inquired again with the same waitress and she repeated the same 4p timeframe. When we pointed out that other non-Black people (as we were the only Black women in there) received food. She stated that she took their order and put it in the system but kitchen staff has the right to fill orders when ready even if it's before 4p. I stated that we weren't even offered that same option. When I asked to speak to the manager, Roxy, she also reiterated the 4p timeframe. Again, I point out other receiving food (about 4 other non-Black parties by this time) and the discrimination we were experiencing. She said she would be back. After probably 15 minutes, she came back to finally try address the issue. Instead of an apology and correction, she tried to comb over the discrimination portion and take our order. The tickets we purchased were non-refundable so we participated in the festivities despite the discrimination. After eating and finishing our drinks, Roxy finally came over and offered an apology and even stated that she noticed the way the waitress was mishandling us and she talked with her. When trying to address the discrimination based on being 3 Black women, she tried to skip over that, make excuses, and downplay what had occurred. I refused to allow her to do such and after we FINALLY got her to listen without interrupting and downplaying the situation, she listened but it didn't seem to do much good as we felt our experience of racist discrimination did not matter to her or any of the other waitresses we encountered. It's very unfortunate that in 2023, 3 Black women can still have such experiences of discrimination based on our racial backgrounds. It's my hope that the owner is cognizant of such behavior at their establishment and handle it appropriately to ensure that no other Black customers have such a disgusting experience at Matilda's. I know we would NEVER patronize this business ever again and no one we know will ever be there either.

Yelp
Need an event spot? Look no further than Matilda. Booked for my 30th pre festivities and couldn't have picked a better spot. We had Baby Atlas downstairs for two hours with some drinks and food. Shout out to the staff for making sure my friends and I were taken care of. Not only a great spot for a party but awesome for a week night stop for some good food/drinks. Shout out to Roxy for being responsive with any and all questions in person and via email. Great place!
google avatar

Yelp
Great little sports bar, decent food. Went for a wedding pre party and had a great time. Gluten free options on the menu.
google avatar

Paw L.

Yelp
Claims to be a Packers bar that opens an hour before games n their website, but the bartender signaled closed 25 min before game start.
google avatar

Crystal S.

Yelp
Matilda and Baby Atlas should have WAY more 5-star reviews. From the first email I sent to Roxy inquiring about Baby Atlas, to the moment we stepped into the room, she made sure everything ran smoothly for my birthday and constantly checked in on us. Plus, the communication between her and the staff to show me around was flawless. Highly recommend this awesome private room, even if you have a small party. So worth it and not to mention the cheapest room you will find in Chicago. Thanks again, Roxy!

Jenny H.

Yelp
We walked into Matilda's tonight for some food and drinks. Our waitress brought us water and menus when we came in. We then looked at the menu and decided on drinks. She never came back to our table so we picked all our food orders. We waited for another 25 minutes and our waitress never came back to our table. They were not busy at all. We made eye contact with her and attempted to get her attention several times but she always turned the other way. We ended up getting up and leaving. Very disappointing.
google avatar

Jo S.

Yelp
Went here to watch a Packers game on a Sunday and was surprised that it wasn't really packed. I haven't been here for a while but it looks like they made a few renovations since the last time I've been here. I really did like our server as she was pretty attentive and easy to get if we needed something. I would go back here to watch the game but other than I would probably not go back.
google avatar

Heather G.

Yelp
Came in and asked the waitress if we could sit at the EMPTY table. She said yes and proceeded to clean it for us. After waiting 20 mins for her or another worker to come get our order, they proceeded to tell us we could not sit at the table, as it was supposedly reserved. There was no sign, nothing. We watched as all the other tables filled up, while we were waiting for the waitress to come back. When she told us, we asked if there were any other tables available and she said no, we would have to stand. We wanted food...and it was a playoff game. Like...why make us wait 20 mins, tell us the table was open, cleann it off and then tell us we had to move and nothing else was available. We walked out, will never be back and will absolutely tell everyone. Rude all around and just terrible customer service. Go ANYWHERE else.
google avatar

Anna V.

Yelp
Hosted a birthday party in the "back bar" section, and it was great! We were able to control the music, bring a bday dessert, and create custom cocktails! We just submitted the ingredients we wanted in our signature drInks, and all the bartenders knew how to make them when we arrived. They even had little print out menus of our drinks and displayed them on tvs. The back bar has a lot of seating options. Mostly high top tables with stools, but also more lounge-y areas and some booths. The music hear it's very loud on the main floor, so good for convos and such, not dancing.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here on a Thursday night for the NFL game and there were only a few people at the bar. We sat down and our friendly bartenders were there to greet us immediately. On Thursdays they have a draft IPA (can't remember what it was exactly) for $4, so I got a few of those. The interior of the place is interesting, and very modern. We went close to the holidays so they had Christmas trees hanging upside down from the ceiling, which I thought was odd but cool. The person I was with ordered some buffalo wings, as all apps were $6 (another Thursday special), and he said they were awesome. Overall, we enjoyed our experience here. I would say my only complaint is that they didn't have the audio for the football game on, instead they played music. There were only a handful of people there and everyone was watching the game, so why not switch the audio? Also, heads up that you need a $10 tab to pay with a card. With $4 beers (I only had 2) I didn't hit that and had to pay with cash. There are signs posted making that clear, so I wasn't surprised by it, but something to note if you're coming on a day with specials or only want one drink. Anyway, I'm sure we will come back as we live nearby. The bartender was telling us about the dance bar/club they have downstairs on weekends, so maybe we will check that out next time.

Bridget M.

Yelp
Me and my tinder date enjoying the lovely atmosphere at matilda's. maddie our server was an absolute angel of a human!! hoping to be cool regulars here. the Truffle Waffle Fries were heavenly. that's all.

Yelp
Thank you, Matilda!! We planned an engagement party for myself and my fiance VERY last minute - and after other places leaving us on the hook, Matilda pulled through. Dylan and Matt were so good about answering our questions - and with dealing with our anxiety (after going through multiple setbacks in the planning process before contacting them!). Our server/bartender (Liz I think) was so patient and made sure everyone had a great time. Actually hosting an event through Matilda could not have been easier, and I would not hesitate to do so in the future. They let us come an hour early to setup, allowed us to use the projectors for a slideshow, and to put up decorations. They also GRACIOUSLY kept our cake in the fridge until we wanted to cut it. Matilda made everything go perfectly - thank you thank you thank you!

Heidi H.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar, friendly service and good crowd. Roxy is an awesome bartender and makes the best drinks especially the lemon drop martin!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here with friends for drinks and food before dinner. We ordered the fried Brussels sprouts and the beer knots. Both were amazing! The Brussel sprouts are perfectly fried with bacon and chilies and have some small spice to them. The beer knots come with three pretzels and honest mustard sauce and gouda cheese sauce. We liked the gouda cheese best. Both were a lot of food!
google avatar

Asenath N.

Yelp
Came here with a friend after work for happy hour. The food menu was very limited. The food was just ok, not a place I will come back again to eat. They had good drink specials for happy hour. Good place to come drink but not for food.

Dave O.

Yelp
Poor customer service, rude staff, owner was dismissive to our concerns - do not support this establishment.

Yelp
I was at a birthday party at Sheffield's and as I was looking for a parking spot... I saw Matilda's. I had been wanting to check this bar out for a long time... so it was then I decided that I would take an hour hiatus and venture over to Matilda's. One of my girlfriends snuck out of the birthday party with me because she already developed a love for Matilda's I really liked that Matilda's is a 23+ bar. It definitely made a difference. I felt like it was classier. I enjoyed the comfortable laid back atmosphere upstairs and we quickly snuggled up into a booth. Now, I would be totally content if there were only waiter service! The drinks are a bit pricey here. Martinis will run you about $12. My friend wanted me to check out Baby Atlas, the dance club downstairs. I was not a fan. It was hot and crowded. The stairs to get down there were scary... narrow and steep. The bathrooms are also downstairs. They are not the cleanest on a Friday night and they are really small... there will be a line!

Yelp
First dAte spot. Trust me. Great lighting and solid food. You will absolutely feel comfy for a date. -Yale Reardon

Yelp
Had a great time here! I love the relaxed vibe upstairs and the dance floor in the basement. Ass sign is a huge plus. A small but good selection of beers on tap, and the nachos were quite tasty as well! Bartender was incredibly attentive, friendly, and quick!

Yelp
Stopped in based on reviews before a show at the Vic...and it was perfect! The pina colodas were the best I've ever had, and the food was great as well! We had the shroom pizza, pretzel knots, and sweet potato fries...all perfectly done and delicious! It's got a great neighborhood vibe with just enough funk in it...stop by and try them out...you will be glad you did...we sure are!

Emma A.

Yelp
Foods alright and trivia night is fun but the service is the slowest I've ever seen. Waitress refused to let us pay our bill despite the table asking multiple times and getting her attention. She also ignored us when we tried to flag her down for food or drink throughout the night. Not worth the wait.
google avatar

Lizzie K.

Yelp
I've been here twice. Neither time was it crazy crowded but there were enough people that it felt alive. Drinks aren't pretty well priced. There is a "dance floor" downstairs which is basically like a dance corner-it is TINY. Even so, my friends and I had room to dance since there weren't really a lot of people down there haha. Not the best place to go if you want something really hopping. Nothing wrong with it though if you want to go chat with a friend or two and grab a drink.

Emily M.

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere. Great music. A warm greeting from the jump. A fantastic drink made by Misael, thank you for suggesting the CBD menu! Thank you Roxy & Misael for an amazing experience, I will be back :)

Nani B.

Yelp
I LOVE MISAEL AND ROXY!!! Wowowowowow! The drinks were on point, the service was speedy, and I literally could not stop laughing all night long. If you haven't, please make this place a regular stop

Yelp
Went to Matilda for the first time in 4 years and really enjoyed the food. I think people get caught up in being too critical and grading each restaurant like it's a "James Beard Award Finalist". I put this in the bar food category and they nailed it. I award it the coveted 5 out 5. Service was extra good. Highly recommend to start with their famous nachos ask for extra jalapeño cheese if you dare! Also heavily recommend their bar pizzas. Their BBQ Chicken and Margherita Pizza were awesome and unique enough creations on those classic pizza pies. All the cocktails and beer selection were good but we really enjoyed the "Frose" Rose. We will be back. Great spot to check out before heading to The Vic Theater.
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
The service you get here is top notch! We went there for football Sunday and Jamie killed it. The drinks were ice cold and the wings were crisp and meaty! I will definitely return and enjoy myself another round!
google avatar

Wyatt H.

Yelp
Super low key restaurant with very good food and an amazing spectrum of alcoholic beverages. I was here for a special tap takeover and all of the drafts I had were excellent. All styles of beer were delicious and the mixed drinks look good though I didn't order any. All of the food was very good and came out quick. We had the short and sprout pizza, bacon cheese fries, and chicken nachos with guacamole. I would happily order all of those again.
google avatar

Noga S.

Yelp
This is my neighborhood bar and I love it! The beer selection is incredible and they have some really classy, unique food options. The whole atmosphere here is really classy and clearly for a more adult crowd than the neighboring Wrigley crowd. The minimum age to enter is 23 after all! They have a downstairs club called baby atlas that plays 80s rap I think. I'm not a huge fan but it can still be fun. The bar though is always a great time! I rated it four because some of the things on their menu are just stupidly expensive. For example, they have a half off wine night on Wednesday and it brings your atrociously expensive $14 glass of wine down to the normal price of seven. But $4 beer night on Monday is amazing for their craft selection!
google avatar

Earl G.

Yelp
A little bit more than just a neighborhood bar. There's two floors, top floor for more of the socializing lounge area, and downstairs for a small, chill, and crowded old school hip hop/top 40 dance area. Kinda reminds of the Cellar in SF. The stairs down are pretty steep, it was pretty funny watching these three buzzed girls come down in a group, it was like they were scaling Mt Kilimanjaro. The vibe is relaxed and it's always good times when people are just hanging out. The crowd was mid-late 20's. early 30's since it was a Friday night, some were still dressed from work. I gotta give them that 4th star since the bartender gave us shots on the house for being from out of town. Congrats to you and your newborn son Mr bartender.

Yelp
Food wasnt what i expected the staff didnt attend well the table Not somewhere i would return
