General Election 2019 | Food Guide for Campaigning in Richmond Park | Eater London

"Off the main drag, Matsuba makes for an elegant lunchtime option. Alongside bento boxes, tempura, nigri and sushi sets (the Spider Roll with soft-shell crab is especially excellent), the Korean-run restaurant offers substantial rice-based dishes like beef bulgogi and bibimbap." - Emma Hughes

Prefer to book a table before coming, especially at peak hour. Everything we ordered was delicious, perfect taste, and generous portions. The staffs were friendly. They have lunch deal menu, and also takeaway deal (collection only). Pity the restaurant only opens from Tuesday until Saturday (5 days in a week). Toilets for customers are available.

Second time around, still amazing! I can’t believe how delicious it was. If I am near there I will definitely come back. I wish I lived next to the restaurant so I can go every day! The quality of the food and the service are top notch! Thank you so much ❤️

My husband and I recently moved to Richmond and were eager to explore the local food scene. We decided to try Matsuba, and it was an incredible experience! The food was incredibly fresh, and I was thrilled to find a full gluten-free menu, which can be quite rare. We ordered nigiri, sashimi, and the calamari fritti—something I rarely find gluten-free around Richmond. Everything was delicious and beautifully prepared. The service was exceptional, and the restaurant was spotless, creating a welcoming atmosphere. We absolutely recommend Matsuba—10/10!

We had a second Silver Anniversary celebration here. Food was excellent, servings generous and a generally pleasant atmosphere. They had lost our Open Table reservation, but they found us a table. The restaurant is small and very busy, so reservation recommended. We had a great time.

This is my favourite Japanese restaurant in London. I love sashimi, they have one of top quality of fish and thier tempura was the best! My son is very picky eater, but he loves food here! Chicken teriyaki was surprisingly delicious, I think they have a little bit different recipe. The staffs are very friendly too.

Google
A solid Japanese restaurant. The food here nicely blends traditional and modern flavors, and it's better than most other Japanese places I've tried. The service is attentive without being overbearing, and the prices are fair for what you get. I think this place deserves a spot on Richmond's list of good eats.

Google
The best Japanese restaurant in Richmond. I recently had a fantastic experience dining at Matsuba. The attention to detail in each dish was remarkable, showcasing the chef's skill and dedication. The flavors were a symphony of delight, and the presentation was like art on a plate. The ambiance added to the overall experience, creating a perfect blend of authenticity and comfort. Highly recommended for anyone craving an exquisite Japanese culinary journey. PS Must try Flora blooming tea!

Google
Incredible sushi place for the price considering it's out of central London. My friend knows the chef and he was so kind and friendly to us! Drinks were fab and overall a fantastic spot for quality sashimi that rivals most London joints in both quality and flavour. The fatty tuna nigiri was superb, you could really taste how fresh and thalassic the selections of fish are here. Yaki Udon was pleasantly not overly sweet, the umeboshi gave it a very gentle tang but again subtle enough to have several mouthfuls and not feel overwhelmed unlike many other yaki udons I've had in the past. Easily one of the best yaki udons I've ever had, and now a favourite of mine! They do a banging shine muscat ade that will easily last your whole meal for under a fiver, absolutely delicious. 😋 Extremely happy with my time here and will make sure to come back and recommend it to my friends! 💗 Thank you for your wonderful service and amazing food 🙏

Yelp
Please look at the dates of the other reviews before deciding too base your decision on the average Yelp score - is Yelp dead? Most all of them are 10+ years old! Screed finished. We ate here tonight. Crisp and tasty vegetables. Super fresh fish and seafood. Ceviche to die for. Wasabi spider maki was heavenly. Service very friendly. I will come back here until I've tasted every item on the menu.

Yelp
Matsuba is a great place to experience freshly-prepared sushi, and will be a revelation to you if the only sushi you've ever had is that conveyor belt stuff at Yo! Sushi. The lunchtime bento boxes are the best value. The 'Matsuba special' bento box (£16.50 last time I went) gives you a bit of everything, including miso soup, rice and salad, and best for those who like a bit of variety. Otherwise you can choose boxes that contain mainly sashimi or tempura or teriyaki. Lunchtimes can sometimes be busy so if you are dead set on eating here on a particular day, try and book in advance. Be warned that this isn't a place you should go for a quick lunch (the sushi is freshly prepared to order), but with the quality of food on offer, you really shouldn't be rushing it anyway.

Yelp
The seasonal set meal is amazing! The food was fresh and exciting! A wonderful little gem in the heart of Richmond. Well worth the visit!

Yelp
They overbook tables which has meant a table booked for 9.15pm has not been available until almost 10pm, and that after much complaining. Despite this, we returned a few weeks later. Very long gaps between dishes, some of which had to be chased. And rudeness beyond belief. Diners at two other tables had issues as well. The high staff turnover says something too! Not going back in a hurry. There is no shortage of good restaurants keen on offering genuine hospitality.

Yelp
Nice looking Japanese restaurant unfortunately the quality of food does not live up to the price. Availability of Japanese food in Richmond is limited and this is not going to encourage people to drive demand.

Yelp
I have been to Matsuba many times. It's one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in London. The sushi and sashimi is very fresh. It has fairly typical Japanese food e.g. tempura, udon, edamame, ramen, etc but they are always of the best quality. Downsides are that the prices are expensive and service can be slow, and the restaurant can be somewhat noisy when full. The lunch menu is the best value and very filling (£16 for a bento box).

Yelp
I really like it, especially their bi bi bop. A must have if you go there! It's a little on the expensive side but the quality of the food, the decor and the very friendly staff warrants that! And Richmond is a nice get away from London, so yet another reason to try it out ;)

Yelp
Best sushi Ive had in London...the one draw back is that it is really expensive even for sushi...for a big roll its £15 which is like $27 USD which is crazy...im a spoiled californian...When I'm in dire need for great sushi I splurge and go here...my day becomes perfect when I can sink my teeth into one of these sushi rolls.

Yelp
The decor here is beautiful, the staff is very attentive (a little overly so, but I'll get to that), and the quality of the fish is great. I had the Florida Maki (a small, 6-piece roll with salmon and tuna) and the 3 fish sashimi (tuna, salmon, and whitefish). The salmon especially was outstanding. Best quality salmon I've ever had on sushi. Unfortunately there was a pretty big bone on one of my whitefish pieces, and I got a little crab shell off the piece of spider roll that I sampled from one of my dinner mates. But don't let that deter you, the fish is fresh and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. There was one staff member, however, who I'm pretty sure has some form of OCD because he insisted on repositioning everyone's drinks every time he came to the table, and kept rotating the sushi plate for no apparent reason. While I appreciate his attention, I think that he was a little too involved. This place has the quality to back up its pricey menu, so don't be afraid to come here if you want to splurge. It's money well spent.

Yelp
Quite expensive but terrific. Try the Korean speciality Bibimbap. Love it.

Yelp
The food here is of a decent quality, although on the pricey side. I had the £40 teriyaki set and while it had a fair number of courses, I think I would have been happier with less variety and slightly larger portions. The service was a little on the slow side. We'd been talking for close to half an hour before anyone even came to ask if we'd like to order.

Yelp
I absolutely loved this place. The sushi was delicious and so fresh- you can watch the chefs preparing your order. I definitely thought it tasted much better than other sushi places I've been to such as the highly popular and expensive yo-sushi. The decor of the restaurant is also lovely and the waiters were great. Its very authentically Japanese with great quality food and a large selection of different things.

Yelp
i enjoyed the food but i thought it was quite pricey for what we had the staff where friendly although on the slow side. had to wait twenty mins for someone to come over to take order.

Qype User (pandor…)

Yelp
Food was admittedly good but not THAT good. It was very pricey, and service was average. Also, not baby friendly. Be warned any mums wanting to eat there. Make sure you get a baby sitter! would recommend Maki Yaki in Kingston where food is just as good but at a fraction of the price and is children friendly!

Yelp
Definitely one of the best Japanese restaurant I know! Service and food are unbeatable.
