Matsunoki Ramen: Buzzy Artisan Bowls of Tonkotsu Hit Mississippi Avenue | Eater Portland

"Expanded from a Pine Street Market stall into its first standalone Mississippi Avenue space at the corner of Mississippi and Fremont (the former XO Bar), the new shop represents more than growth—it's described as a kind of homecoming for co-owner Jeff Extine, who cut his teeth just down the street at Por Que No. The owners — Extine, Grant Macdonald, and Joey Freedman — bring collective experience with Portland standouts like Japanese-based ramen chain Afuri, Bollywood Theater, and Marukin (now Kinboshi), with Macdonald having spent years overseeing Afuri’s considerable growth in the Portland Metro. Macdonald essentially defines the ethos thusly: "We make delicious ramen, and we make it with an understanding of Japanese sensibility, but with a target audience of Americans. The way I think of it... in Japan, it’s like, noodles first, broth second, toppings are an afterthought. Here, it’s the exact opposite order. People are looking for toppings." Extine adds a critique of undifferentiated topping choices: "What goes in ramen? Oh, seaweed, oh fishcake, oh, and then all of a sudden you just have this bowl and it’s the same as everyone else’s, and it’s just too crowded!" The interior evokes a jungle-green-against-rattan vibe: forest green walls that nod to the namesake pine tree, blonde wood tables and palm-colored chairs arranged in clean symmetry, tall front windows pulling in Mississippi Ave foot traffic, and pendant lights with bulbs wrapped in woven green orbs echoing rattan/wicker fixtures. The space includes a full bar and an all-new cocktail menu featuring spring-forward drinks such as the Cherry Blossom, made with salal berries and Freeland Spirits liqueur, and the Long Thaw, a floral riff on the white negroni. While tonkotsu-style ramen (its version also incorporates chicken broth) remains the bread-and-butter, the team emphasizes plant-based offerings: a full quarter of sales across the board are vegan options, a figure the team wears as a badge of honor and considers "a core concept ... instead of an afterthought." The downtown Pine Street Market location will continue operating, and the Mississippi shop is betting on increased space and visibility; during a recent visit passersby frequently slowed to a stop or altered their course to peek in and scan posted menus. Doors open Thursday, April 24, with free ramen for the first 50 people through the door." - Ron Scott

A Local Player Is Debuting Both Coffee and Ramen Shops Along Mississippi Avenue | Eater Portland

"Opening Thursday, April 24 at the confluence of North Fremont Street and North Mississippi Avenue, the second location will offer the same menu fans expect: big bowls of vegan Tokyo‑style shoyu alongside hearty pork belly tonkotsu, the fan‑favorite wings, and — new to this location — a cocktail menu. Owner Grant Macdonald, formerly of Afuri Ramen & Izakaya, had been scouting a second ramen spot and added the cafe project alongside it." - Paolo Bicchieri

The ultimate rainy-day recharge—one slurp and your worries dissolve. This places ambiance was fantastic and the food was delectable. Service was good for how busy they were, we were the beginning of the dinner crowd. We got the Pumpkin Tantanmen, which I recommend since it’s the fall special and temporary. It’s not that spicy like a 5 out of 10. My friend got the mild curry ramen. Our favorite part was the broth and pork belly. I would recommend getting extra serving of pork belly. The noodles were good but we both thought they could’ve been a bit thicker. We also shared a 2 piece order of jumbo tenders and they are def JUMBO! I got the curry flavor and it was soooo good. I saved the left over for my broth. Our only complaint was the table we got was super janky, like it had a missing screw and was wobbly but we survived and didn’t spill. Parking can be rough but doable. I hope you like it.

One of the best ramen spots in Portland. We used to go to the one in Pine Street Market and loved it. We were happy to see that they got their own place on Fremont. We like the atmosphere and this location has cocktails

I called several times on Thursday to make a reservation, but they did not pick up the phone, so my friend and I decided to go with no reservation on Friday. Turned out it wasn't needed at all. We walked in at 5PM, and there was only 1 customer at the restaurant. I really liked how you pay first here like some ramen restaurants in Japan. I got the Tonkotsu Shoyu. The soup was unfortunately lukewarm (maybe on purpose so people don't sue Matsunoki?) but it tasted good. The crispy pork belly chashu was great. I personally like chewy thick noodles so I didn't like their thin noodles much. The green onions were overcooked to me. The boiled egg was good. Overall I think it was a good bowl of ramen at a reasonable price. Only 3 stars for "Atmosphere" because I saw several flies inside the restaurant (just like most restaurants downtown Portland.) My chair cushion, some of chopsticks and spoons looked dirty.

The shishito peppers and their chicken tenders are great. 10 out of 10. We tried the Spicy Garlic and the Spicy Red Ramen. The ramen was just good IMHO. It had too much going on and confused the flavors. If I were in the neighborhood, I would go back, but I wouldn't travel far either. Get the Chicken Tenders!

We visited this Ramen place because I saw it being reviewed on Facebook, and it looked good! We both ordered the Spicy Red Ramen with extra chasu, an order of shishito peppers, and the 2 piece original chicken tenders. The shishito peppers were cooked well and came with a spicy sauce for dipping. The chicken tenders came with a curry sauce. They were a little dry but tasted good with the dipping sauce. The ramen was excellent! It came with a perfect gooey ramen egg, al dente noodles, crispy fatty pork belly, and spicy broth 10/10! My husband would have preferred a seafood option, so hopefully, in the future, they could add that. We will definitely be back.

Food was really delish! I got the seasonal pumpkin tantanmen and it was so good, with the perfect amount of spice :) my husband got the shoyu tonkatsu which he enjoyed as well. Would definitely devour again. As a few others have mentioned, service was a tad slow (husband ordered additional chicken for his ramen on the side, didn’t come out until far after we got our bowls), but mostly unremarkable. However, I would be concerned to go during rush times, we went around 1:30 pm. Also the area that you grab items from (utensils, spice, etc) is in a really inconvenient spot if there’s anyone in line. Overall, the food outshines any inconveniences. I really enjoyed my ramen :)

We ordered at 6pm on a Monday, was told it would be ready for pickup in 15 minutes. we arrived at around 615pm to pick my food up, and the hostess (without checking the line for orders, or checking with back of house) tells me it'll be a few more minutes. about 15 minutes pass, my kid is getting fidgety so my wife has to leave with her to go home. 15 more minutes pass, staff starts giving me funny looks, start looking at orders, I maybe think they didn't start our order. Back of house lady comes over and asks if I already ordered, I told her yes about an hour ago, she asked my name so I told her, she says oh we have something for you and hands me the food. The bag wasn't even warm to the touch, let alone hot. I was expecting at least some sort of recognition that they dropped an order and were apologetic for it, but instead I received a meal that was cooked shortly after I ordered it, which was a fully room temperature order of chicken strips and ramen. Because they had cooled down the chicken strips were tough, and the ramen had kind of started to meld together, the whole meal had to be microwaved to be edible. Very unenjoyable for $30+tip. I tipped in advance, I ordered over the phone to make sure my order was correct, and I even double checked my name with the hostess. Altogether the air of the place was chaotic, the food was pretty unremarkable for the price point ($19 for the tantanmen), and I left feeling like I spent my money to be disrespected rather than fed. For a new place in the Mississippi neighborhood, which has award winning restaurants at the same price point literally a stones throw away, my family wasn't impressed and likely won't be ordering from here again.

Google
Tbh I really loved it and I'm so happy it's in this neighborhood. I think my main complaint is I wish there were more vegetables add ins, I have blood sugar issues and this is super carby. I also wish instead of keto free they had kale noodles or something low carb but just being picky. I think maybe the menu is limited because they just opened up. Tonkotsu shoyu ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨ - creamy - loved the crisp on the pork, melts in your mouth - wish it had more vegetables Curry Rice bowl ⭐⭐✨ - could do better at home I think - didn't like how little substance there was for the price, like maybe 1 cm of curry that wasn't super flavorful

Yelp
Food: 3.5/5 Service: self service, you order at the counter, pick your own seats, and bus your own table. Ambiance: 4/5- cozy dinner vibe with low lighting, good for a chill night out. The restaurant is located in a nice area, though parking was a bit hard to find. There's plenty of seating inside and they also offer outdoor tables, which is a nice option. They feature seasonal ramen specials and this month's theme was pumpkin. Ordering was easy and straightforward, with each ramen bowl having a helpful description. For appetizer we got the shishito peppers to try, the chili mayo that came with was so good! The peppers themselves were a bit too oily for my taste, but a squeeze of lime really elevated the flavor. We got: spicy garlic ramen ($18)- definitely a bold flavor, leaning on the saltier side. It felt a bit heavy after a few bites. the black garlic shoyu ($17) was more mellow, and the noodles soaked up the broth nicely. Both bowls came with perfectly jammy eggs. I didn't try the chashu, but my boyfriend said it was smoky, super tender, and not overly fatty basically the ideal cut. Overall: I'd come back to try more from their menu!

Yelp
The service was nice. Order first then sit down. They have a bar if you choose have adult beverages. I had the tonkotsu shoyu -spicy. The broth good could be a bit richer and noodle texture was good. The pork(charsu) was charred, bland/non marinated and a bit tough.

Yelp
A cute shop with delicious ramen! Upon entering the aroma of broth filled the air. It smelled so good, and thankfully the ramen did not disappoint. I got the spicy garlic ramen and added corn. The broth was creamy but still light, not super salty or sweet tasting. The broth was super rich and tasted like it had been simmering for hours. The noodles were perfect and there was a LOT of it in the regular portion. The meat was thick and a little on the dry side, but still really good with the ramen broth. My egg was overcooked so I was a little sad about that. You order at the counter and seat yourself, thankfully there were still a few tables open when we arrive during dinner time as they did get quite busy! I would definitely recommend checking this place and I'll be back to try their apps and drinks too!

Yelp
Brewery hopping on Mississippi, easy walk to Matsunoki. Indoor ~ cool vibe with a walk up bar. Nice furniture & decor. Two walls of windows for natural lighting. The weather was too nice and ate outside at the picnic tables. Fried Chicken ~ large breast tenders, nice crisp on the outside, tender & juicy inside. Dipping sauce tasty. Ramen ~ Black Garlic intensely strong, deep broth, on the verge of too rich. Noodles perfect al dente. Service was welcoming but the typical counter ordering and tip before you eat is whatever.

Yelp
I was at the coffee shop next door and lunch time snuck up on me. I walked through the hallway into this ramen shop around 1pm and it was pretty empty. I ordered the black garlic ramen and a peach margarita. The ramen was delicious and you could smell the garlic on it! I wish they had more toppings like mushrooms and bamboo shoots but their additions were very limited which was a bummer. I like my ramen bowls to be packed! The pork piece in the ramen was the best I've ever had!! Or was a thick, fatty piece of pork that was very delicious! I feel like most ramen places give you dry, thin slices of pork but this pork was amazing. The broth was also tasty and I definitely kept drinking it when the noodles were gone. I enjoyed my peach margarita too! I've never had a peach margarita but I felt like this was refreshing! Overall, a great spot with great food! I got my ramen quickly too. Check this place out and get some coffee next door!

Yelp
This place is amazing. I wished I had to chance to dine in as the ambiance is nice and spacious. We got the vegan spicy garlic ramen and the vegan spicy curry. Both were savory, filling and had the right amount of heat. The tofu was marinated and well seasoned. The curry one was my favorite but both were really solid choices - can't go wrong with either They have a nice variety of vegan ramens with different flavors and their service was awesome, very kind and considerate even though I was just there picking up the food.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places in Portland! Great for groups as it is in Pine Street Market which has a few food options inside. You order and there is shared seating in the middle. I always go to Matsunoki Ramen every time I'm in town. The broth in the ramen is amazing! I always order the Tonkotsu Shoyu (without egg) and a side of chili sauce so I can control how spicy it is (I'm a baby).

Eryka A.

Yelp
I had the black garlic ramen and fried gyoza and it was delicious! Definitely coming back again and again.

Yelp
Newish spot for ramen! It's counter service so you order and pay at the counter and they'll bring out your food. The menu has some apps and cocktails but not a ton of variety. There's plenty of tables and even outside seating. The cocktail came out timely but our ramen was done and just sitting there in the kitchen because staff was slower. Ramen was a bit cold but that's okay. Flavor was good but service is a tad lacking.

Yelp
Great new ramen spot on N. Mississippi! I just finished my vegan spicy garlic ramen and I'm already planning my next trip. The best thing about this place is there are just a many vegan ramen options on the menu as meat. They seemed to be a little short staffed today. Maybe they didn't plan for the possible mother's day rush. The staff was nice, but didn't apologize for the wait. I'm going to chalk this up to this place being new and all the employees possibly being new. Ambience was nice. Great looking bar and they also have some picnic tables out front. I'll totally be back!!

Yelp
The tantanmen ramen sauce delicious! Also got the shishito peppers for an appetizer. Never had them before, but enjoyed them a lot! Overall a good ramen. Would deff hit this place up again.

Yelp
Cute corner street location, Friendly service, order upfront, find your seat, and food was brought to your number table. Ramen was tasty, flavorful and filling, good portion size. I would return!

Yelp
I would like to give 4.5 stars. My grandma and I have made it a tradition to go to ramen shops once a month in Portland, this month was this shop and I can say without a doubt this is the best one we've gone to so far out of 5 or 6 different ones. Highly recommend, regular tonkatsu shoyu is rich and simple, and their black garlic shoyu was very flavorful! Definitely recommend, definitely would come back.

Alicia S.

Yelp
The food was incredible! Way better than I was expecting, highly recommend. Make sure you try both the ramen and the chicken!

Lorenzo M.

Yelp
Placed a pick up order that had a pick up time for 7:10pm10/12. arrived at 7:15 for pick up. Line for order and several people waiting for online pick up. Nobody's orders were made and the place was very behind. Waited until 7:30 before asking for an update on order. Server said they would check and started making drinks never gave me a status on the order. Continued to wait until 7:46 before deciding to cancel order. Charged full amount food was never ready or prepared and now I'm unable to get a refund for what was paid through Uber Eats since they use Uber Eats for their online orders. Lost an hour trying to try a new spot. Didn't even end up trying it. Went to a trusted ramen spot and ended up paying for dinner twice on a Sunday night.

Reese W.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place, maybe today was just not their day but I had a pretty miserable experience. Waited 45 minutes for my food, with zero indication that this would be the case, and no one checking in to let me know my food was still coming. Started to worry that it would come at all. When it finally got to me, the ramen was very tasty, however completely missing the pork belly apart from a few tiny pieces. My friend that was dining with me got a nice big piece in theirs, but not mine (I had ordered the Tantanmen, which claims to also come with pork belly). Not sure what happened today, but likely won't be visiting here again ):

Yelp
YUMMY RAMEN!! The location is very clean and organized. The food options were nice and simple. I got the spicy red Ramen and it was so good! Everything was really seasoned properly and the spice! Finally some good spice! Definitely cannot wait to go again. Only issue is finding parking but other than that, I would give it a try!

Alex B.

Yelp
Food was amazing! You order at the counter and then find a table so less waiting on a server. We got there at a good time and our food didn't take long.

Yelp
2.5 stars. Service ok. Vegan garlic shoyu - too much broth, too oily, noodles thick and Al dente but not enough, toppings very stingy, tofu too fried and lacking flavor while tough/chewy, broth flavor decent, still hungry after finishing. Tonkotsu shoyu - flavor ok, too much broth, too much noodle but al dente, very stingy toppings, one piece of pork belly that was burnt, egg mediocre, acid reflux set in right away. Would not recommend.

Erwin W.

Yelp
Stopped by looking for some good ramen on a typical cool overcast PNW day. Just a few customers but it took me over 30 minutes to get served. I watched 3 tables come in after me and get their meals. It wasn't until I asked about the delay was I told my order had been "lost"? It so happens I am an African-American male. The meal was alright but the service spoiled my experience. I will neither be back nor will I recommend this place.
