The Best Coffee Shops in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Rare is the cafe that opens in Portland after multiple successful operations in a different country. Matta is that rarity. The business is family-run and based in Colombia, multiple cafes in San Marta and a 59 acre-farm within the network. The cold brew coconut coffee is what owner Aura Matta’s highlights to coffee blog Sprudge. Sporting warm woods and lots of plants, the newcomer cafe is a vibey remote work destination. Like Hector Mejía Zamora’s Guatemalan farm-led operation Cafe Zamora, producer-owned multinationals are the only multinationals worth visiting in Portland." - Paolo Bicchieri

Came for weekend boozy coffee drinks. Wanted morning drinks without all of the brunch hoopla. Best espresso martini I’ve had in town (had them add Baileys from some creaminess). Must get the lemon blackberry lavender scone, also pictured. Gorgeous cafe aesthetic with beautiful greenery. Tasteful cafe music on a Sunday morning.

Google
Vibrant little cafe (offers coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages with sides ranging from cookies to scone etc). My friend wanted to visit this location so I did with her. We were glad to see it open on Easter since some locations downtown were closed for the religious holiday. The matcha tea, despite not being my favorite, was good when coupled with something sweet like scones and macadamia nut cookie. Chill atmosphere. You'll see people doing work on their laptop . When we came, there was jazz like music. Very chill.

Google
Cheese empanadas were delicious. It was the perfect afternoon treat. The outside of the empanada was much different than what I was expecting - it was crunchy, corny and paired deliciously with all the ooey gooey cheese filling and salsa. Their coconut coffee also really hit the spot on a hot day. Highly recommend trying it out if you’re in the area.

Google
I absolutely love Matta Coffee, it’s such a wonderful experience! It checks all the boxes, Great food, drinks, presentation, atmosphere, and service!! By far the best coffee shops in Portland. Everything is vegetarian, with some vegan options as well! I eat meat and I absolutely loved the food, their Chickpea Empanadas were delicious, I would describe them as an impossible meat breakfast option. The owners are so kind and I can tell they put so much love and care into their business. They go above and beyond to share the most authentic Colombian coffee experience, importing coffee beans from their families farm back in Colombia! Highly recommend, I can’t wait to come back!!

Google
Matta is one of my favorite places to visit. My friends and I are literally here all the time! The drinks are delicious—I’m obsessed with their chai latte, and their Colombian pastries are always fresh and so yummy. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, from the warm staff to the thoughtfully designed space. It’s one of those places where you instantly feel at home. If you’re looking for amazing coffee, tasty treats, and a chill vibe to hang out, this is the place to be! <3

Google
Some of the best coffee you can find in Portland. Super high quality that you can taste in every sip. The cafe is beautiful and is a great place to relax or enjoy a high energy Sunday brunch. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable about their product. The food is also delicious. Highly recommend this place if you're looking for a really great espresso or cup of coffee and some traditional Colombian food.

Google
Great vibe, great customer service and great coffee. This was my first time here-I’d heard about it on IG and El Pilon is my favorite Colombian food cart so I had to give it a try. I will say that the food is not as crispy as the food cart location but still good. The coffee was amazing- the smell alone🫠so good. I will be back for the coffee and will probably be buying a bag of beans next time. My partner and I rode our bikes there and they were very accommodating. Great little spot to check out!

While visiting fam in portland I experienced The best service and yummy quality coffee! I had a mocha and my hubby had a latte. It was made to perfection and the staff were so accommodating and kind. I love the snacks and atmosphere. We need more places like this all over! Bring one to bend. I am coffee snob and can honestly say you will love Matta!!

Yelp
Omg this coffee shop is actually perfect. It's got that open-concept, super aesthetic vibe but still manages to be so cozy?? Like usually, cafés either look good or feel good, but this place nailed both. Also, the prices?? I was fully expecting to drop $9 on my matcha like usual, but when they said $5 for an iced strawberry matcha, I almost gasped. And it so GOOD. I was lowkey scared it'd be mid, but no this was top-tier, almost as good as the one from komeya no bento in SF. Obsessed. 10/10, would recommend.

Yelp
Once inside some Hawaiian feel ambience jumps right in front of you. On top of the Hawaiian feeling, a bit of a modern Tiki bar ambience is seen a little mixed in. And the background music is an absolute match to the overall all atmospheric vibe. Well done; the first impression is always a must to achieve to appease. The young lady at the bar is/was the epitome of the best customer oriented service worker. The moment I stepped in, she, with the sweetest voice, welcomed me. This instantaneously broke the ice. After walking in the chilly morning in downtown Portland, this was a much needed ice breaker to warm me up to the center of my body. "What brought you in?" "How did you hear about us" to strike a friendly conversation with me followed. She then walked me through the menu a little bit but she let me take my time to peruse it on my own. I didn't feel pressured into deciding at all. My eyes caught "Espresso Boosted Dirty Chai/Matcha". When I said that alouy, she explained that it's on the sweeter side but she then said that said sweetened could easily be tailored to match my tastes/needs. I didn't hesitate for asking her to incorporate my likings into it: decrease the sweetness down to 1/3. She pleasantly received it. While paying, she continued to carry on a conversation with me to get to know me (I told her I was visiting Portland for a day from Denver. She then elaborated that she'd be visiting Denver next week for the first time. What a coincidence!) She said to take a seat where she'd bring my Espresso Boosted Dirty Chai to my table. What a kind gesture. My chai was, first of all, beautifully made in a large cup on a matching coaster. When I took my first sip, oh boy, it immediately hit the spot. Just the right amount of sweetness as I asked for; the barista perfected it although like a piece of cake (she later came to me and asked how the sweetness was to which I said it was simply perfect. She gave me her sweet "yay" and off she went back to the bar.) So in conclusion, ambience checked, service checked, quality checked. What else should I say to give this place better accolades to elevate it? Nothing!! What a wonderful place! If this place was in Denver, I would frequent it. PS - this place serves alcohol. The selection of cocktails is quite the size!

Yelp
Firstly, the food was well worth the wait. Everything came out piping hot - the cheese pulls were insane! The bakery desserts (coffee cake muffin and cinnamon rolls) were warmed up too. I am still thinking about the mashed potato and cheese arepa, as well as the vegetable empanada. All the arepas and empanadas were delicious though and I would love try them all again next time. I love how they all came with a side of plaintain chips and some amazing salsa. The drinks were great too! My friend said this was probably the best chai latte they had in town. I docked a star because when we walked in at 11am there was a DJ blasting music that felt a bit too loud for the morning (and for a cafe setting in general) lol - maybe it was a special event. It was 90% empty but our drinks and food still took a while to come out than expected, but it's not a huge deal since it was all so good! The workers were really friendly.

Yelp
My first thoughts as I walked in, was what a beautifully done space. The interiors are amazing with plants and wooden hues taking Centre stage. The space is huge and there is plenty of seating. We were the only ones in at the time and so got immediately attended to. The staff was sweet and very welcoming. I got a cappuccino and my husband got a macchiato. Both drinks were very well made. There are plenty of options in the form of drip, espresso, cold brew, and pour over. There were a few baked goods and other food items on the menu. We picked a coffee cake muffin which was as good as our beverages. The space include seating designed to be communal and adaptable to both the coffee shop and cocktail bar concepts and it did feel very inviting and we ended up getting another cup and spending more time. The jungle-inspired ambiance and sustainable coffee from their family farm in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is truly a unique Portland experience for sure !

Yelp
Latte was good, coffee cake muffin was too suffocating for me and the vein of cinnamon (I think) left the center still cold, chocolate cookie was fantastic. Pastry prices were reasonable but Jebus, 8 dollars for a latte?!?!? Thank goodness we had a coupon to make it a more reasonable cost but unfortunately wont be going back if needing to pay full price with so many other good latte places around for less.

Yelp
This is a new spot, and at least this week they have events for free every evening (check their website for updates) - tonight it's a pretty vibe DJ. I pretty much try to stick to open air or very well ventilated situations so I love the open garage doors even in the evening. By day a coffee bar and by night, well, a coffee - themed drinks bar )along with many other usual drinks). Small bites in the evening menu like empanadas and arepas. Enjoyed a margarita negra (has coffee liquor, and bartender added some takin on the rim); quite delicious. Bonus: the coffee themed cocktails are $10 during happy hour, 5-8 pm. Nice! Great airy spot, really gorgeous, hope to come back soon and do a little writing in this spot!

Yelp
Matta brings a taste of Colombian coffee to PDX. This was my first time, and I got to say my latte was full of super rich and delicious flavors. Walking in, I heard more Spanish being spoken than I've heard in years. Its great to see latinos supporting this business. Friendly staff, spacious seating, street parking (Located on N Flanders). Come. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Matta balances its dual identity as a daytime café and a nighttime bar. As a study spot, it is functional, though the smaller tables can feel a bit cramped for more than a laptop and a notebook. I ordered a mocha, which was generously sized but leaned on the sweeter side and could have been served hotter. What lingers with me is curiosity about its evening vibe. The space feels intentionally designed to transform, leaving me wondering how its charm shifts once the café crowd fades and the bar energy takes over. It is definitely worth a return visit to experience both sides.

Yelp
New Pearl District Café by day - Matta Colombian coffee rocks! Cocktail and beer lounge by night with DJ music - good times "party-on!"! Cool layout! Industro-contemporary design and decor for a convivial meet up with sus amigos y amigas (friends). Feel that Columbian vibe. See it for real in the coffee and plantain banana trees direct from Columbia in planters as you walk through the huge roll up door from the sidewalk. Very interesting! Coffee is light roasted, well balanced flavor (acidity to sweetness) that I tasted in a cup of Americano. Owner's father grows single origin cherries harvested, then roasted reflecting the rich, robust and fruity body in the soil of Santa Marta, Sierra Nevada mountains of Columbia - where coffee has been cultivated for centuries. Great coffee starts with pristine Sierra Nevada soil and plants cared for by a conscientious farmer deploying sustainable and organic practices with no pesticides. Thus, this coffee is more healthier! And Health Advocates say coffee is good health insurance against "type 2 diabetes, heart disease, liver and endometrial cancers, Parkinson's disease, and depression!" Wow! "Gimmedat!!!!!I' And I'm liking the taste and buzz in the Matta Columbian "cup of joe" buzzzzzz me! Delish empanadas scratch made daily from a sourced food truck and pastries on the menu - that are scrumptious! Knowledgeable and friendly service with a smile - shout out Kelsey! Go girl! I go for Matta coffee! FYI: Coffee 7AM- to 4PM daily. Bar lounge music 4PM to not sure Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Keep an eye on "Time Open" as this place in the Pearl buzzzzz's!

Yelp
I'm SO impressed, Matta! From the moment you walk by, whether it's directly in front of the store or across the street, the interior and open energy of Matta will call you in. The Columbian and tropical vibes mixed with warm modern design is perfect for the space, and I'm a big fan of how they use booths and wood. The bar is small but mighty. I ventured here during the day, so, I enjoyed the café hours. The staff are primed to help explain how the menu works and what food is available, and there is much more than I would have assumed. I went for the matcha latte, and would absolutely come back here for a light breakfast. The booths and tables in general are well spaced, and some even have plant protection for more privacy, so it's an ideal spot to meet with friends, for a date, or studying. The restrooms are huge, clean, and clearly are ready to party at night. I'm curious if during winter, will the large doors be open or closed? I hope open! There are a few patio chairs outside if you need that, too, but, given how hot it is lately, get in the shade and enjoy an iced drink!

Yelp
Pretty good coffee, cute decor, open garage door for those nice days. Had a chocolate croissant that was the size of my head. They even warmed it up, the other pastries also looked very yummy. Great place for lounging. Definitely need to come back for happy hour and live dj. Will update review after to comment on the cocktail lounge aspect. Happy hour $10 espresso martinis 4-6? I think it was Live dj 6-2am Thurs to sat I may be slightly misremembering the numbers but close enough.

Yelp
This place has been on my list since they opened, and I finally got to go! For me, the best part of having coffee is enjoying it in a beautiful, elegant space, and this spot nailed it. They offer a great selection of coffee, some options are basic, but they're all quite good. One thing to note is that their syrups aren't house-made, and they use Oregon Chai, which is on the sweeter side. I mention this because chai is a popular drink, and some might prefer it less sweet. This is a fantastic spot to relax, hang out, and maybe snap some Instagram shots or videos. They also host brunches and evening events with another company. The staff was great--they recommended a fantastic coffee choice, and my drink was amazing! Personally, I like my chai on the sweeter side, so it was perfect for me. I know I'll be back soon!

Jenny H.

Yelp
Extremely disappointed in the reality of this place. Yes the decor is great, very green and welcoming. The coffee was good but the food was terrible. The cinnamon roll was so hard the plastic forks and knifes couldn't even cut into it. The brownie was so also hard, the empanadas were the only things that were semi warm, they were okay. The banana chips are stale. Oh and the Pan de Bono super hard and cold. So hard I couldn't even eat it, the empanadas are just re-heated everything else is cold. Definitely open to trying new places unfortunately this was a first and last.
google avatar

Rita M.

Yelp
This tiny cafe in pearl district was small, intimate and interesting! Food service takes a while because they warm up food in a convection oven. Loved the veggie empanada because of the spices and flavor! Cheese empanada and arepa needed the sauce for flavor.

Yelp
Had a beautiful time here! The barista was very kind and even offered to bring my coffee out to me which I thought was exceedingly kind. I had the cappuccino with oat milk which I thought was absolutely delicious! Enjoy this space while it's new- I sat outside and everyone kept stopping in and saying " I saw this place on TikTok!!" Unsure if they are dog friendly but I did see one well behaved dog sitting inside!

Yelp
Newer coffee shop/café in Portland with a relaxed, bohemian vibe. The space is open and airy with lots of tropical plants. Garage door opens to outdoor seating. Workers there were very pleasant. Coffee was delicious! I had a honey oat milk latte (they use Pacific brand oat milk). Food options include items such as fresh made pastries, empanadas, arepas, and plantain chips. Personally, I had the mashed potato and cheese empanada, which came with plantain chips and a small salsa. My friend had strawberry rhubarb croissant. Everything was great and fresh tasting! The Colombian food comes from a local business, El Pilón. All of their (El Pilón's) food is gluten free. The café did have a couple options for vegan or GF pastries too. It's versatile enough to be your go-to for a quick coffee run, a casual lunch, or a chill afternoon hangout. With its vibey atmosphere, great coffee, and tasty snacks, this place certainly has my attention! Whether you're meeting up with the girls or bringing the kids along, you can't go wrong here. And lastly, they also do a fun brunch with live music on Sundays!

Nikki C.

Yelp
This is the cutest little cafe! Absolutely loved the main dining area and they have the cutest little private space if needed too. I had the Chamomile iced tea which was fresh made and delicious. The strawberry croissant was absolutely decadent, I'd go back just for another bite of one of those. I finished up with the pineapple and cheese empanada. Oh my goodness- the combination of the sweet fruit, cheese and just spicy enough salsa was perfect! We went on a Sunday at lunch, it was comfortable, easy to converse with my guest, and the service was great!

Yelp
Great new coffee spot also with a full bar, right in the Pearl. Nice ambiance, great coffee, friendly staff/barista team. Had an arepa for breakfast that was delicious - highly recommend.

Yelp
I like the concept of a cafe by day and cocktail bar by night. I first came here to try their expresso martini at the recommendation of a friend. It's delicious! In the evening this place is called Secret Grove and because it's fairly new, it's not crowded -- they even have a DJ! I would frequent this place often as a last stop for the night. However, the last time I was here, my friend waited 30 mins for a drink WHEN THE BAR WASN'T ANYWHERE NEAR FULL CAPACITY. So she went up to the bar to ask about it and mentioned it had been close to 30 mins. She sat back down and the waiter/bartender approached our table to tell her that it hadn't been that long and that "the computer doesn't lie." So we challenged him and she was able to pull up her AMEX transaction history to actually confirm that it had been 31 mins. He apologized but the damage had been done. What terrible service and even worse, the girl bartender behind him was laughing at the situation. For this, I can't give this place a high rating. This behavior is disgusting.

Yelp
Inside and out was very beautiful coffee was also really good. We had a macchiato, mocha, and salted cookies. Super delicious!

Yelp
After watching an Instagram post of Matta cafe, I immediately saved it to my archive of places I want to experience. The post highlighted what I assumed to be the top favorite foods and drinks of local Portlanders. Seeing the options of delights gave me high hopes, until, after a few bites of their food steered my mind. Not the worst, but not a 10/10 either. On our morning visit, the space was inviting. I felt welcomed with its large garage style doors, with an industrial terrarium vibe, and cool toned tunes. It gave me a feeling of seclusion. (It was an early Sunday morning, so maybe that's why.) First up, we ordered a drip coffee, an americano, pan de bono (freshly baked cheese bread), empanada, arepa de queso y huevo, and both these small plates came with plantain chips. The coffee was served calientito, and had a deliciously smooth reveal of flavors that seized, and drifted across the palate. The after taste was bold, and peacefully unaggressive. The article that's posted on Matta Cafe's IG page reports that the food is supplied by El Pilo Columbian Restaurant in Portland. I admire that local small businesses have the heart to support each other. The pan de bono was my favorite. The texture was soft and the intensity of the cheese was mild, and not overpowering. Though, I wish the bread would have been warmer. The texture of the reheated empanada, and arepa was the disappointment to the dish. Generally, these foods are at peak taste and texture when they are freshly fried. One main factor that could have affected the result of the food was that it was reheated in an air fryer, or a mini oven. The texture of the cornmeal was stale, and there was no crisp crunch. The empanadas and arepas are served with plantain chips. Not sure where these are sourced from, but despite their crunchy, sweet, and salty kick these chips reminded me of Trader Joe's plantain chips. Do not get me wrong, I am not here to bash Matta cafe, instead I am here to give my honest review of their food and coffee. I'm so proud by the dedication of the Matta family. As a Latina myself, it's such an inspiration knowing that a Latin family pursued such an amazing vision to ultimately become a dream come true. Gracias familia Matta.

Yelp
What a nice addition to the neighborhood. Loved the vibe, spaciousness, coffee, and the light snack, while I worked a bit and people watched. I'll be back.

Yelp
Latina owned and delicious coffee! Real and good :) I always get their mocha! Friendly staff too! This place is a must and definitely worth trying if you want good and most importantly Colombian coffee the location is so cute! Gives great Colombian coffee shop vibes! So glad to have a latina owned spot to visit in the Pearl

Stefan P.

Yelp
Very cute location with good pastries and a small but appealing food menu. Unfortunately, it's the most expensive coffee I've seen in Portland. A 12 oz Cold Brew is $8.50 which is at least $3 more than most 16 oz equivalents. Latte was also over heated. If it was the same price as other good coffee shops I might come back but not at the current prices.

Patrick K.

Yelp
This charming coffee shop is a must-visit! The coffee is exceptional, expertly crafted with high-quality beans. The cozy atmosphere adds to the experience, making it the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a delicious cup.
