"Mattie’s Diner keeps a loyal crowd of neighborhood customers. It’s a divey, old-school, greasy Jersey brunch inside of a 1948 chrome diner car. Originally founded in 2005 and re-opened at a former tire shop location in 2022, Mattie’s Diner has a “junkyard” chili breakfast bowl and hefty stacks of blueberry pancakes but also offers a fair amount of vegan dishes. Go late in the day, get a milkshake, reminiscence, and know that milkshakes can be brunch too." - Kayleigh Ruller, Nikki Miller-Ka

Always a good time visiting this Charlotte-based Jersey-inspired diner! Gives us a feeling of being back home! Wylie and the staff are always so welcoming. We’ve never had a bad experience at Mattie’s!. A great menu with gnarly retro decor!

The retro theme was nice. The service for breakfast was great. The food lacked seasoning. We drove 40 minutes because it was reviewed on social media. Probably won't frequent again. To many other restaurant's. Here's some pictures.

BFF wanted to go here because he saw vegan omelette via social media. Well, he described it as a Jersey diner and they had nonVegan items. Ok. Sunday lunch. Friend got on the list. But the Bestie that wanted to have this met me in the parking lot scared there would be cross contamination and wanted to go elsewhere. He's been a dedicated vegan since 2008 or 2010. Either way, this ain't for play nor show. He's principled. The other vegan is really pescatarian and could careless. I have severe allergies and definitely care if there's cross contamination. Young lady seating is asked about how the cooktop works for vegan items: 1) is there a separate cooktop? 2) are new utensils used? They did a good job answering and owning what they didn't know but sought someone to answer the questions. Young lady showed us the place where we'll sit and she would go get answers and be right back. She never came back. Alas, the server showed up and he didn't know either nor did anyone ask him or inform him. I had to clean the table and seats were more upsetting to me. The busboy popped nearby and I asked for his spray bottle and he apologized saying he'd clean. H wiped everything but dried nothing. Server returned without answers but someone got another guy to explain their process. He was helpful. I was content. I can say pics on Yelp leave much to be desired but I got the chicken fried chicken + mashed potatoes and sweet potato waffle fries. The vegans got their food first and we got an explanation. I didn't care. Bring it as it's ready. I understand. Plus y'all know vegan cheese doesn't melt. Lol. I didn't desire their vegan breakfast quesadilla nor padrino (I think that's what one had). See pictures. I must say I wanted to get the greens but I will definitely order them on another visit. The vegan ordered vegan pancakes for All to try. I like the crispy edges of any pancake but didn't need the pecans. The vegan butter and syrup was impressive. We got a lot of apologies in due time as 1) straws were forgotten 2) soup of day query was forgotten 3) refills forgotten 4) table wasn't cleaned I was most bothered the itemized check was taken away so I don't have an image for this review but also BECAUSE a huge convo took place regarding the tip. A new immigrant to the USA was amongst us AND had legit questions so I was happy to explain but their receipts show 20% totals and higher for tipping yet this receipt show the total with tax. Tips for on the pre-tax total. Long and short I can recommend 1) fried chicken fried 2) sweet potato waffle fries 3) mashed potatoes 4) brown and light gravy 5) vegan pancakes 6) American potatoes looked great but I didn't touch em as I had plenty Parking is rough. Cleanup in between flipping/turning tables doesn't really happen in the overflow and I'm good on that. Like, sweeping and wiping can be done between tables and as parties depart. The staff is younger like everyone appear to be teens which led a dining member inquire where are the adults? I think I saw 1. There is an overflow parking lot

Loved this place! What a history. We traveled from Upstate NY to find this New Jersey relic. The food was fantastic as well! A must see when you travel to Charlotte!

Google
Drove over an hour to eat here and was so very disappointed. The service was beyond slow. The food was meh. I have been to many tic tok recommended restaurants but this is my first bust. Pot roast was dry, mashed potatoes had no flavor, meatloaf tasted ick, and the bacon the the BLT was cold and chewy. I know this place has a lot of 5 star reviews but we did not have a 5 star experience and meal.

Google
My first time here at Mattie’s. I was very shocked with their menu options. From what I hear, this is a jersey diner theme. I ordered the burger with onion rings and some green beans also. I gotta say this first. Whatever sauce they make for the onion rings, I need some more of that. It was proper. They need that in stores. The burger was pretty good as well. It wasn’t overran with salt. Even the bun compliments it as well. It was tasteful without the greasiness. Even the green beans were pretty great. I definitely enjoyed my visit here and will most definitely be back here very soon. I’ve been here in Charlotte for years and have driven past this gem plenty of times. Good food in my neighborhood. Now that’s what’s up. Atmosphere here is even awesome. I love it because I’m an ol skool head. So another good thing is I didn’t see anyone having their pants hanging off themselves. Everyone here looks like they were enjoying themselves with a purpose. Good vibes.

1st time here, we always pass it but never ate here. It's a cute small little diner. The air conditioner must have been broken cause it was HOT & they had a portable air conditioner running. It wasn't too bad, but we wanted to stay & try the food. I got the beef pot roast with red potatoes and sweet potato fries, all very, very good. Jon got the burger, hot dog, and regular fries. He said it was good. The guys running place were funny & very helpful. We will be coming back, and hopefully, the air conditioner will be working next time.

Went in for the first time and instantly loved the old diner look! I got the pot roast egg bowl and loved it. A ton of flavor and they were not skimpy on the amount of food in the bowl! The server was friendly and willing to talk about the history of the place! I also recommend the crumb cake, tasted amazing!

Yelp
Stumbled upon this "Gem" of a place this weekend on Saturday - 20 January 2024; It was a cold morning, and this "New York Fat Boy" was foraging for an appropriate place to fill my belly. So, I took a chance - rolled my Orange Dice and drove my Orange Car over to this "Old School" - Box Car Diner with a tremendous amount of history behind it. Place is packed and bumping. Had to park in the "Overflow" lot next door which goes to show you what is going on. The intoxicating aroma of deliciousness and love simply will draw you in from the parking lot. Immediately - upon stepping into the "Box Car" you are transported away to a different world. How can I describe the Owner/Operator - other than a Captain of a Ship; - Everyone working in Mattie's Diner is amazing; - Everyone is friendly, enthusiastic and stand proud and steadfast devoted to ensuring diner satisfaction; - You feel like you are seated inside a "Box Car Diner" - The ambiance is amazing. Friends - this is a place that you must try. Saturday's Visit was just amazing; - Food was just unbelievable; - I visited there for Lunch; Most folks were eating Brunch. I would come back this morning (Sunday) - 21 January 2024 for Breakfast/Brunch; - This place is more than your typical Diner Food - the place has character, bite and class. The waitresses call you honey and sweetie; - You will not find a more local of a place; Yet - Ironically the Owner/Operator "Mattie" is your "Quintessential" Charlotte Boy originally hailing from Lyndhurst, New Jersey. Apparently - this is where he procured the originally Diner Box Car and transported down to North Carolina. Take a look at my pictures and videos from the weekend; they say it all. Everything that you will devour is made fresh and simply made to order. Tremendous Vegan / Vegetarian options; - You're not going to find a place more respectable of the most discerning palates. This place is frequented by Charlotte's Bravest - Witnessed, Firefighters dropping in to pick up food; - so you know it must be good. Tremendous selection of delicious beverages to wash down your meal; - Including this Amazing "Organic Soda" - Don't fear the Sugar - it was amazing. I'm a Doctor - trust me, a little bit can't hurt you. Pot Roast Entrée was amazing and taste like "Bubbie" used to make; - That's Yiddish for Grandma. This place is the epitome of melting pot with people speaking in various languages, dialects and accents. Don't worry - You won't get lost. Wait staff are psychotically accommodating and will ensure that you leave stuffed and smiling. Parking could potentially be a bit of a challenge, but don't fret/fear - you can make your way to the "Overflow" lot just a few feet away and find a great spot to park; - Otherwise just be patient - there is lots of movement at this place because everyone is coming and going. Place is truly spotless, I have to mention the extremely clean bathrooms; But - that's because the team takes tremendous pride in every aspect of this institution. Sit down, because I'm about to say something important - Mattie's Diner may possibly be one of the top 10 restaurants in Charlotte. I'm not kidding. Enjoy a "Little Slice of Jersey" in the heart of Charlotte, North Carolina - I'm not kidding. Don't be a fool! - Try it! - Great for couples and the family. Could get a bit tight for large groups. Overall - A+ - I challenge you to find a place with better food, down home character and local charm - all rolled up into one. You will leave feeling a part of this institution. Enjoy!

Yelp
Food was good Staff was friendly The small old school diner vibe reminds me of NY I had a sausage, egg, and cheese on a Kaiser roll. Everything was cooked to perfection. Grits were also really good!

Christin N.

Yelp
GREAT IF YOUR VEGAN! Tons of Vegan options! Unfortunately I'm not vegan. The place is a flash back to my past growing up in NJ in the Diner scene. Vibes 5 Stars Service 3 Stars Food 2 Stars We had the vegetable omelet a lot of fresh vegetables but so BLAND. I mean I never add salt to my food when I'm out to eat NEVER! But this I had to. Not to mention the dry, cold, stale tasting rye toast. Grits were super basic. Blueberry Pancake looked fantastic but super bland also. They don't have any non pork breakfast options beside vegan sausage or bacon no Turkey options. Oh and your omelette doesn't come with hash brown like most every diner I've ever been too! Service was very intimidating and not welcoming. It was pretty busy so maybe we just went on a off day. It happens. On a high note the COFFEE was really good but the coffee cups are weren't very clean.

Sedana N.

Yelp
Food fast and made to order!! Service was attentive and friendly. I loved the sweet potato home fries, I highly recommend!! Ambiance is casual and great for large parties and wheelchair accessible. I highly recommend.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem if you don't live in the area. It is a typical diner but has a huge patio and indoor/outdoor garage seating. The portions are generous here. I would highly recommend the breakfast quesadilla!

Shelby D.

Yelp
The food was delicious and there was no wait as they have plenty of patio and outdoor seating with the diner. The parking lot is small but there is parking across the street as well. We enjoyed our Junkyard Bowl and Pappy's Breakfast. Lee our waiter was awesome. I'll be back.

Julie P.

Yelp
If you know what a diner is, then you're in luck here. Now, the menu isn't 5 pages long, and they are confused on the name of pork roll :) but other than that, it does not disappoint! It's simple, but growing up in Philly/jersey, there's something about diner green beans. Maybe it's that they're overcooked (in the best way), or it's the water they're boiled in, but whatever it is, Mattie's has it figured out. It took me back to our Thursday night diner nights at the Toms River diner. Their Jersey burger is on point (minus calling a delicious breakfast meat by the wrong name), with the right color cheese and all. They also have a decent kids menu, and I love the variety of sides on it. Our server was great, and cool with my kid slowly figuring out how to order for herself (which I thoroughly appreciate)! He also poured the "perfect beer"!!

Yelp
Nothing is more southern than pot roast, mashed potatoes and gravy and a side of buttered corn......and Mattie's Diner provided a flavorful reminder. There butter had just the right amount of corn added to it. The mashed potatoes were creamy and served hot and fresh. I really loved the gravy.  Beefy tasting. The main attraction, the pot roast of course, was very tender. Of course I asked for a side of gravy to pour on top. The gravy took the pot roast from a 7 to a 10.  #GratuityAdded  Mattie's Diner offers a lot more on the menu and I will return to try other items.  #MattiesDiner #instafood #comfortfood #southerneats # #charlottesgotalot #foodlover #foodblogger #dinerfood #samanddean #ThePlaza #foodiesofinstagram  #CLTNYE  #supportlocal #foodiesofclt  #charlottefood #cltfoodies #charlotte #clteats #queencity  #charlotteeats #charlottesgotalot  #charlottefoodscene #exploreclt #cltfoodies #eatdrinkclt #goodeats #southerncooking #cltlateeats

Yelp
Who doesn't love diner food? Or breakfast all day options. If you say you don't, are you even human lol. I stopped in abt 1:45 on a Monday, not knowing they close at 2 on Mondays. But that didn't stop me from still getting great customer service. The young man who was my waiter was very sweet. I apologized for coming in so late right before they closed, but he wouldn't hear of it and with a big smile told me it was no prob at all. So I decided to order some blueberry pancakes with side of bacon. Yummy! I went light in the blueberries, and the edges were crunchy which is a must for me and my pancakes lol. I also decided to go ahead and order some dinner to go, got the moms meatloaf with greens and Mac. Can't wait to try that out as well. With so many places closing in town that offer that "old school" feel, I'm so glad after years of not being around that Mattie's finally came back. I remember going to them often years ago when they were over in the Avid Xchange area which back then was known as the music factory. Good times and good food.

Lauren R.

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood and this was my third time here. I have only been for breakfast but the breakfast is amazing and the service is always great!

Mike S.

Yelp
I love a good throw back and vintage 50s style diners are my jam, so after driving past this place many times I finally decided to come in for dinner on a week night. What's cools is that while in the front you have your typical diner setup with booths, and bar stools by the counter, they also have a dining room and outdoor area where it opens up more if you would like more space or a more modern dining experience. Me personally I took the booth right away. I opted to go with their hot ass burger with a side of Mac and cheese. The burger was delicious with a nice hot sauce to give it some kick and the Mac and cheese was melted deliciousness. If I wasn't so full I definitely would have ended the night with a milk shake. I fully intend to come back for breakfast as I loved everything here from the vibe to the service to the food. This place is a gem.

Yelp
LOVE. THIS. SPOT. Breakfast at Mattie's Diner was so good. It was simple, fresh, and tasty. Probably best diner food I've had. Omelet was delish, and blueberry pancake was a great shareable as well. The vibe is so nice, everyone is so friendly from the patrons to the staff. I can't wait to come back to try lunch or dinner.

Yelp
The Aesthetic: Old-fashioned yet modern diner in a cute vintage building with friendly, NJ service. Retro decor that will make you feel like you're in an old movie. The Price: It is slightly pricey for diner food, but not extravagant. Most prices on the menu are fair for the quality you're getting. You get what you pay for. The Value: This is becoming the theme of my reviews, but you get a lot of good quality food for the price you pay here. I always leave feeling satisfied and full. The Parking: There's only a few spots up front, but there is a hidden lot in the back. If you're going for Saturday or Sunday brunch hours, plan ahead! My Order: My meal here always starts with the Orange Soda float, I'm obsessed. I get too full for my meal every time, but I love it. I also love all of their loaded fries, flapjacks, the mac, the collards, and the pot roast. My lover really likes the Carolina Burg. There is so much to try, I've never had a bad meal here. The Conclusion: Prepare to fire up the jukebox and eat some old-fashioned delights at the best diner in CLT.

Vivica R.

Yelp
VEGAN / PLANT BASED REVIEW: if you're looking for something good to eat for breakfast and you're vegan, come here. I was very satisfied with their take on a vegan quesadilla with vegan sausage, egg and cheese. They really hit it out the park and the price was affordable too!

Yelp
The last time I dined at Mattie's my 7-year-old granddaughter was twirling on a chrome stool by the cash register while polishing off a bowl of ice cream. Then, suddenly, it shut down and was mothballed for several years. Now it's back as I remember and even better. After a series of letdowns Matt King and his iconic 1949 gleaming diner found a home in the Shamrock-Midwood area. And what a home it is. Ya just gotta go! We ordered a couple of their classics: "Ya Might be a Redneck" for Lori which is an outta this world chicken fried chicken breast with sawmill gravy, two eggs and a side; and I ordered "The Jersey Sandwich" with Taylor ham, two eggs, and cheese on wonderful roll with a side. Fantastic. I could go on and on. This is my kinda place: divey, juicy, edgy, quirky. Delicious. Has the fryers set to high on my "Give 'em a whirl" meter. As their sign says, "Eat here." Such a no-brainer.

Nekesha P.

Yelp
We were seated and served our drinks right away. Our food came out fast and it was hot and fresh. EVERYTHING!!! Everyone was friendly and very attentive The milkshake was special made for meand it was to die for. (Thanks Elin ) We could see our food being made and they have a 97 Sanitation score

Yelp
I used Door Dash to try a new spot for dinner after a long work day last night, 12-6-23. I ordered a kid's French toast with livermush, a cup of grits, home fries with onions and peppers, smart soda diet coke. What's seen in the pictures is exactly what was left at my front door. I used 2 stars instead of 1 because I'm not sure if what I received is because of this restaurant or the driver. I received flatware but absolutely no condiments. The grits & the livermush were the best looking and tasting items. There were holes in the Styrofoam containers of the home fries and the French toast & livermush; it looked like either someone made the holes or something gnawed its way through. The home fries were not seasoned at all. While it was a kid's French toast because I didn't want to eat too much too late, there is no reason for it to look like someone gnawed on one piece and then threw it back in the container. There was no powdered sugar or syrup included.I chose this place because of the good reviews I saw. Hopefully, this was an off night. I most certainly did not receive the food or service I read about.

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Kids' burgers and fries were good, burger was a decent size and they both cleaned their plates. Service was really good. Friendly and efficient. Being from any I love me a good diner so was really disappointed with the chicken fried chicken. I can only guess that it was cooked from frozen as the outer edges were over cooked (very dry and edging on grey in color) while the middle wasn't fully cooked and was still pink. They have no issue with taking it off the bill but left me without a meal (kids were almost done with theirs so didn't want them to have to wait). Will say that the sweet potato fries were delicious though. So 3 stars for some really great and some really bad parts. Will have to see if I'm ever up for giving them another shot. With the prices being much higher than a diner usually, was thinking the chicken would be fresh cooked. Oh and bathrooms were clean. Love that they're gender neutral! And sitting out on the patio was a nice add.

Iris R.

Yelp
The food is always very good. The service is great whether the restaurant is busy or not. If you're looking for a unique experience I'd recommend this restaurant.

Jason G.

Yelp
I stumbled upon Mattie's while burning time waiting for my flight (it's not real close to the airport, 20 minute...I had 3 hours to burn.) I love a good diner, and looked Mattie's up because the building just looked cool (an old tire shop). I got the Mattie Melt...and sat the counter because I love that vibe. They cooked a fresh burger right in front of me, well seasoned and perfect. The sauces are made in house (I recommend the Mattie sauce if you like some spice, the Russian was also delicious). Onion rings were good for a frozen bagged ring. But the burger was the star. If you like diner food, this is your spot. The service was also phenomenal. Everyone was nice, and seemed truly appreciative of each customer who was eating. It was 1:30 on a Monday and people were still coming and going for lunch. I look forward to returning in September.

Jeanne J.

Yelp
Don't pass up an opportunity to eat here! Food was great, fun place to have breakfast!

Eric M.

Yelp
I did delivery and enjoyed the burger wrap and vegan sloppy Joe. Great service they called to let me know the side I picked with the vegan sloppy Joe wasn't vegan and to be sure I wasn't strictly vegan. I have also been for breakfast which was yummy and fun diner vibe inside.

Kate S.

Yelp
We had a great family night out for dinner at Mattie's Diner. I loved my Italian chopped salad (classic iceberg base, as expected, but with plenty of chopped veggies and deli meat and cheese on top). My husband got a burger with an egg, cooked to order. He really enjoyed it. Our one year old daughter had a side of macaroni and cheese (bowtie pasta with Matti's house made cheese sauce) and she really enjoyed it. She also enjoyed eating dad's waffle cut sweet potato fries. We topped the meal off with a classic chocolate shake that we shared as a family. Delicious, of course! We really enjoyed having the opportunity to have classic diner food but eaten outside in the shaded former garage area. They have great circulation with the fans above and the doors open. When it's colder out, we'd love to eat inside in the old section of the original diner. It was just a little warm inside by the grill for us today. This will likely be a new family favorite!

Michelle D.

Yelp
My sister and I came here for my bday breakfast. This is such a cute diner and the staff is friendly. Be prepared to ask questions because the menu is a bit confusing. I am a big breakfast person. I believe the testament to a good breakfast spot is how well-cooked and crispy their bacon is. This place failed! Note to cooks: BACON SHOULDN'T BE FATTY AND BORDERLINE RAW!! In addition to the bacon, I ordered the challah french toast, which was described as 1 large piece of toast that would fill you up. What I got was a 1 slice of texas toast. Very disappointing. I would like to try other things on the menu but if I go for breakfast again I will request my bacon to be cooked and order the pancakes which were the same size as the plate lol.

Nicole V.

Yelp
Classic burger, classic french fries, classic root beer, fruit craft soda make it even more delicious

Brynt L.

Yelp
Recently picked up some breakfast takeout from this location. I heard they had the best blueberry pancakes in Charlotte and they did not disappoint! First, the pancakes were huge! The order came with 3, which is enough to share. They weren't shy with the blueberries either. The stack was fluffy and buttery. Also enjoyed the grits and sausage on the side. Overall, great place for a tasty diner-style breakfast.

Daniel J.

Yelp
Mattie's Diner is already a neighborhood institution! Classic diner vibe but the food is elevated multiple notches above ! "Haute diner" sounds too pretentious but maybe nouvelle diner is it! Sue enough the classics but then a massive vegan selection too. 5 sta

Randy G.

Yelp
This was my second visit to this diner. I really like their atmosphere and food. Today we tried eggs in a basket - I had to get an explanation of what it was and it was a first for me. They literally cook the egg inside of the toast. The pancake was just average to me. I don't eat liver mush but my wife said it was crispy how she likes it. The prices are good and I'll definitely come back and try the lunch menu.

Aaron C.

Yelp
Honestly.. feeling ashamed that I haven't reviewed Mattie's sooner, as I'm a weekly patron at this point. Great staff, great options, great atmosphere, great experience.. every time. Folks talking about food being made with love and whatnot... You can actually taste it here..

Vincenzo R.

Yelp
Absolutely loved our experience at Mattie's -- what a gem of a restaurant! We ordered the vegan meatloaf, sloppy Joe fries, cookies n' cream and strawberry shakes (with a fried Oreo), and the livermush burger -- WOW! Everything was so tasty and I don't think there is a bad thing on the menu. Enough about the food, the staff were great! They had plenty of suggestions for us and were super friendly all around. And finally, the jukebox was rockin' so the vibe was right the whole time. Definitely check this joint out!

Elijah G.

Yelp
This was a great experience, the food was very good but the service made it even better. The owner was great to talk to. He's from New Jersey and clearly has a passion for his diner. The home fries are really good and the flapjack was delicious. Shout out Mattie!

Maria L.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, friendly staff and very busy. We ordered a fairly basic breakfast, eggs, home fries, bacon, sausage and grits...all basic and underwhelming. Maybe their specialty foods are more exciting.

Sarah K.

Yelp
Fricken amazing! Passes the Jersey vibe check for sure! FYI they got air conditioners in the main car so much cooler now.

Herban E.

Yelp
MLK DAY NEVER GOING BACK... My mother and I arrived on MLK day-1:25PM-found out Manager (Nicole) was on 10 from the moment we arrived. The main cafe was full so we went to garage seating area which is normally nice and warm but this time-it was cold-as we waited to be seated, we asked if heat was on-server said she's hot when she's at home and it's 62 degrees and she has the window open and that - to her-it was hot and that no one else said it was cold and she didn't want to make the other patrons uncomfortable (them not saying doesn't mean they aren't hot or that it would bother them for the heat to be turned on/up)-manager comes to us in defense of the temperature-which we'd already let go-letting us know it was on 72 and that was the temp it was going to be- we said ok and asked if someone would clear the table - she said in a minute - once she cleaned the table the we sat down my mother grabbed napkins to dry the table and wet booth and good amount of food was on the floor under around the table, which my mother kicked away-Coffee came out barely room temperature and tasted like it had that old coffee taste like it had been sitting on the heater for quite sometime so my mother and I asked for hot/fresh coffee-manager said it was fresh (I've been in food business 20+ years-and I can say with certainty that it wasn't), we asked was there anything else hot to drink - manager says coke products - I restated hot - she said tea-we both said we'd take tea with oat milk (which we needed more of since we poured most into the already barely room temp coffee)-manager-was very friendly to table beside us -but was clearly only tolerating us from the onset-this wasn't my first time experiencing her being in a mood but this was by far the most extreme - We ordered and it took a little time for the order to come out but when it did, we ate as fast as we could but still wanted to enjoy talk time and not feel rushed btw staff and we were polite to the waitress - at some point we asked what time was closing she said 2pm on Mondays and Sundays-we apologized and asked if we were ok (we were on our 2nd cup of hot tea to stay warm and finishing our food) server said we were good until 2:30 or 2:15-we said thank you and continued to talk and stacked everything as we'd finish to be helpful-at 2:05 the music was turned off then at 2:10 - the manager went to the panel where she turned off the heat- while we were finishing our food (we received the check to pay at 2:12-I already had the debit card out as well) when the waitress came back- I told her how incredibly rude it was for the the manager to turn off heat on customers who had initially discussed being cold in the first place . Waitress apologized and recognized also how terrible it was saying-"I know, I'm so sorry-I can't explain that- wish we could start it all over) I tipped waitress 20% and mentioned that I'd be posting about this to my followers and wouldn't be returning-my mother was also insulted and felt that on any day this would have been bad but on MLK it was all the more offensive. Mom went to restroom and as I stood prepared to leave the clearly upset manager approaches and says I turned the heat off because a customer who left said it was hot in the garage (it was nowhere close to hot) I mentioned to her that we were still there and how rude that was - she defended and made excuses (I recorded the conversation on my voice memo), I didn't understand why a leaving patron's thought would effect anything anyway when we were still there-while the only two customers still on the patio-none of the attitude or nastiness made since at all. I told her that I wouldn't be returning and she said well if you wanted the heat turned back on you could have said something-to which I replied this is MLK day and that none of the things that happened today should have-especially not today. Instead of empathy or an attempt to ascertain why I'd said that, the manager's defense button went to 1000% where-among other things she said "do you know who my husband is?" I said I don't but being with a black man if that's what you're implying doesn't mean you'd understand where I'm coming from - She flipped it completely-became the victim and acted as if I had now done something to her - I said that she was now operating in her privilege and she said have a nice day and walked away in anger-the whole thing was unnecessary - you don't save money turning off music and heat and treating the table beside them like gold and yours like trash and expect no response. You also don't force customers out by turning off the heat. If someone feels something was racially different and you aren't that race-try empathy not defense and privilege... Matton was the best up there - they are now cook not server. I took pic of ticket so owners won't act like this wasn't a real experience.

Yelp
We were in town for a quick weekend and had trouble finding immediate parking in the city so we drove to the outskirts. When we saw Mattie's we decided to give it a try. Burgers for both of us and I especially loved the veggie black bean burger with mushrooms and guacamole. We loved it so much that we decided to go back and try brunch the following morning. The place was pretty crowded but I was surprised the food still came out just as fast! If I come to Charlotte again, I will be eating here once more.

Yelp
Great environment first off, love the old diner feel and to know this offers a vegan side is amazing. The food here was well made and worth the amount. Service was great too, fast and knowledgeable.

Yelp
So I decided to try out this little diner called Mattie's. I'll start off by saying that the place was clean and it was a good atmosphere. I ordered the Hunka Hunka Burnin Toast with Bacon and an order of Home fries potatoes. The food was delicious. I only wish the order came with 3 slicked of bacon instead of two. Other than that everything was great. I'll most definitely be returning. The food is a little more pricey compared to other dinners but the quality of the food is good. So it's worth the money.

Yelp

Yelp
May be the best diner I have ever been to. This one works very well for me because I am vegan, and they have a lot of vegan dishes, unusual for a diner. I had the meatless meatloaf, and you wouldn't know that it's fake. It was quite good. They have a main room which is classic art-deco diner, but also a larger back room which is open to the outside in nicer weather, plus some tables out in the open. I want to try the rigatoni with meatless balls next. If you around this neck of the woods north of Uptown, don't miss it.

Yelp
Outstanding diner in Charlotte. We Visited Mattie's Diner on a Thursday morning and it was terrific. Lots of New Jersey stickers on the coolers as we sat at the counter. Our breakfasts were tasty and plentiful. Chatted with the owner Mattie who gave us a history of the authentic historic diner originally from NJ. Besides the diner car there's a funky dining room with great old diner photos on the tables. If you want an authentic diner experience go to Mattie's in Charlotte.

Yelp
This place is so cute and a throw back to old school dinners of long gone days. But they have plenty of vegan and GF options. Service is quick and friendly with the grill right in front of the counter and not far from the tables so your meal arrives hot!

Yelp
Warm welcome immediately upon arrival. Truly a diner experience. It felt like I was transported back to the 60s. The entire staff worked together seamlessly to provide excellent customer service. The food was delicious- I'm still drooling over the sweet potato home fries.

Yelp
Best diner in Charlotte. When you walk in the atmosphere is like a NY/NJ Diner and then when they take you to the other part in the back it is an even cooler vibe with great nostalgia pics the food was amazing my wife had one of the skillets and I had a Rueben. We topped it off with the best milk shake. The Rueben was awesome and fries were even better. Her skillet was bursting with flavor. The service was the best part our server Lee was so nice and very attentive! He made it a great experience. We will be back anytime in Charlotte!!

Yelp
Going to Mattie's was a totally spontaneous decision. We have been once when it was still located at the music factory. I must say, the service and especially the food as improved. Pretty much every meal also has a vegan option. The portions are very generous, the food tastes Homemade and the milkshake was made with real ice cream. They also have vegan ice cream. I will definitely be back, it's nice to have a local and affordable place opening up in the mix of all those new high end restaurants.

Yelp
Nice change of pace for breakfast with upbeat music and fresh food. Indoor and outdoor seating space with umbrellas. Give it a try. Easy parking,?clean restrooms.

Yelp
What are you waiting for?! This is the quintessential diner experience. Huge menu, cooked on an open grill, counter seating, jukebox. It's got it all. The atmosphere is great - we def prefer sitting in the diner car, but if you have more than 4 then they have seating for you out in the garage. Honestly- a brilliant addition that eliminates the biggest limitation to a diner: seating for parties larger than 4! We've had lots of things off the menu and a few things we come back for often. Breakfast quesadilla w *vegan* sausage - so flavorful and huge portion. THE GRITS - give that woman a raise who makes these every morning. Ma's Meatloaf - better than Will Ferrell ever imagined. Coffee - honestly if for nothing else you can get Summit coffee w free refills here! Milkshakes - find the photos and you'll understand why. Little Layer Cakes - what?! How in the world do they make these? Out of this world. We go frequently and it never disappoints.

Yelp
I have been intending to write this review for a long time. My husband and I were very excited when a diner was set to open in our plaza shamrock neighborhood. We did not yet live in Charlotte when Matties was open in its music factory location, so we had no idea what to expect. Even more than the food, which is excellent, the people/staff at Mattie's are a joy to be around. We visit Mattie's weekly, and I look forward to our visit all week. It's a bit like visiting family. The food ranges from typical diner favorites like meatloaf and sh*t on a shingle to elevated diner food like grits/homefries bowls topped with salmon and many vegan options. Some of our favorites are blueberry pancakes, the breakfast quesadilla, and the reuben. Mattie's has a great set up, where you can sit with a party of 4 or less in the front old diner part of the building, or outside on the patio area, or they hybrid in the building with the garage doors up in warmer weather. If you haven't visited yet, visit Mattie's and enjoy!
