The 13 Best Atlanta Breweries - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"Downtown’s Max Lager's is recognized as the oldest brewpub in Georgia. The inventive brews like the Hopsplosion IPA, Brother Ivan Imperial Stout, and Wry King Max Rye Lager regularly win awards, and there is also an expert-curated wine menu. And when it comes to their dining side, wood-fired menu items like their tender BBQ ribs and pizzas should be on your table. We like sipping on their city-view patio since al fresco dining is a true rarity in Downtown Atlanta." - dennis malcolm byron

My experience was worth a return, I stopped in for a quick bite and a drink. The place was pretty clean, and empty at the time. I decided to sit at the bar, and was immediately serviced. The bartender was really helpful with my drink selection, and gave great options on the food.

This restaurant, located in downtown Atlanta, is a great choice if you're in the area for a conference. I tried several dishes: the shrimp appetizer, Southern Fried Chicken, and Shrimp and Grits. The Shrimp and Grits were the best I’ve ever had—absolutely delicious! I sat at the bar, but the service was slow. They definitely needed an additional staff member at the bar, as the bartender asked me for my drink order three times. Additionally, my appetizer was served at the same time as my entrée, and you could tell that the shrimp was overcooked. Even the person sitting next to me experienced delays with their food. They ordered wings, and their fries arrived ten minutes later. There may be some miscommunication between the front and back staff, but I'm not sure.

Google
Hidden Gem of a Brew Pub and Grill! We were in Atlanta for a trade show staying at Marriott and we found this fantastic restaurant just around the corner. The food was so good, we went back 2 nights in a row and it would have been 3, but we were invited out to another restaurant. The beer was so good and you can order a flight of beers to sample the variety on tap. Big shout out to Paula and Peter who greeted us and made sure we were well looked after. If you are in downtown Atlanta, don't miss out on a great place to have dinner and sample some great beer! I will definitely be back to Max Lager's the next time I'm in Atlanta! Thanks again Peter!! Google
This is a great location! I came here for lunch with friends. It wasn’t too busy and we were sat immediately. We shared the spinach artichoke dip with homemade chips. It was delicious! My friend got a burger and I got the Cobb salad. The salad is huge! I only ate half of it. Very tasty though! I gave 4 stars for atmosphere because the smell of beer from the tanks hits you like a slap in the face! It’s not a pleasant smell, but you get used to it quickly. Also, the restrooms are upstairs and I did not see an elevator for wheelchairs. Maybe they have one, I don’t know. Service was ok.

Great beer and an even better burger. It was the best we had in Atlata. Take a glass of the HulaHoop Sour out on the upper deck to start your night. Then order your burger, making sure to upgrade to the bison burger! Save room for the fried cheesecake goes best with a Max Black stout. Morgan took great care of us. Tyler, the manager, will make even the most challenging request possible.

Google
Best collard greens, hands down! The southern fried chicken was a perfect representation of good southern cooking too! Yaya T. was top notch in her recommendations and is full to true Southern hospitality! Oh yeah, the beer is pretty darn good too!!

Google
We had an awesome meal here ! Max Lager’s is a mix of delicious food, old world charm and cheers feeling that makes it warm and welcoming. Hats off to Jake our bartender for his great service and dinner suggestions. Most important to make my list is energy and #maxlagerswoodfiredgrill definitely gets 5Stars 💥

Google
Ordered the BBQ pizza and it was awesome. Burgers and chicken were good as well. Server was slow and didn't get us refills very quickly. They were also out of Lemonade.

Yelp
I came here after a Falcons game and had the old fashion. It was strong and I definitely recommend trying it out if you like the taste of bourbon. Barbecue chicken pizza was sooo good. I recommend trying the pizza because I'm not a fan of BBQ chicken pizza...but this was soooooo good!!!!! I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
I went to Max Lager's for lunch with the work crew. Short version - Max Lager's is what I've learned to expect from a downtown restaurant. Nice looking but overpriced with bland food and mediocre service. PRO Maxadillas - $12 quesadillas with spinach, 2 cheeses, salsa and guac. $15 with chicken, $18 with shrimp. CONS 1. No Allergy Awareness Before I ordered my Max Burger with white cheddar & applewood smoked bacon, I alerted the manager of my onion allergy. There were no onions on the burger but I received an onion brioche bun. 2. Mediocre Food/High Prices For a $20 lunch burger I'd expect it to be grass fed or at least mouth-wateringly delicious. It was neither. And the "hand-cut" fries were factory-cut & just as underwhelming. One co-worker ordered Fish Tacos ($18) and received seafood tacos (scallops, mussels etc.) She was unimpressed. Another did not care for the bbq sauce in her Creole BBQ Shrimp ($22). The third said the chicken in her Beer Mac and Cheese ($12) was dry. The fourth loved her Maxadilla. 3. Basic Service Refills came quickly but it took too long for the check and we weren't offered boxes for our to-go items. 4. Restrooms The restrooms are nice and clean but up two flights of stairs. Not fun if you're mobility impaired. SUMMARY In short, I would not recommend or return.

Yelp
Corner suite on main road. No restaurant parking. Lots nearby to park at- paid parking but free at certain times. First impression visit. Order (): 2 drinky drinks, Lemon Pepper Wings, Salmon with whipped potatoes and asparagus, "The Manhattan" NY Strip with green beans and whipped potatoes Total = $104.58 Pros: Nice dim and calm atmosphere. Special attention to their beers and beef. A cute place for couples or a chill laid back vibe. Cons: No restaurant parking. Drinks came after our food even though it was not crowded. You can tell how empty it was by the pictures. Would I Recommend: No due to lack of parking and service. Food dishes are common - you can get these dishes anywhere.

Yelp
Came with a large group on a Saturday afternoon. Our waitress was great. Very attentive without being overbearing. Our food was severed quickly. I ordered the Salmon BLT and it was lacking flavor. Bathrooms are located on second floor. I didn't see an elevator. Loved the decor.

Yelp
Ambiance was dark and quiet, we sat in the top floor near the bar. Service was good and the food was good too. We got the side salad to go along with the pizza, which was a pretty big portion to split. The crust is that thin, sandy crust that's not too thin like a cracker and the pizza had squash, mushrooms, spinach and tomatoes. It didn't list that it had Olives, but it came with Olives so I just picked those off because it made it far too salty.

Yelp
Good service. Good food. Good drinks. Great experience! No complaints. I would return if ever in the area again.

Yelp
We had the PPO Max pizza and it was amazing. The crust was so good that I ate my crust, which I usually do not do. Ric S waited on us and he was great! There are many TVS so a good place to watch sports.
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
Service was extremely slooooow! We did have a large party but the place was empty. The one savior for this place is the food. I ordered the fish and chips and it had good flavor. The portions were plentiful. Not sure I would return for food but others in our party enjoyed the brew.

Yelp
Ambiance was nice, not too loud. Service was fantastic, welcoming, friendly, attentive, and fast. Food was amazing! Shrimp came in a scampi type sauce with lots of seasoning, basil, and blistered tomato's with these crispy crostini slices so good. Food came out quickly. The steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly and come with fries and broccoli. Got a Shirley temple as well and my server offered me a to go cup to take the rest of it with me. A fantastic meal!!

Yelp
We booked a reservation during DragonCon which was super busy. Despite the hard rush, we had excellent service. The host was very welcoming as well as the other staff. Our server Joshua, was excellent and had our drinks and appetizers served quickly. I had the Margarita and it was on point. He made a great recommendation for the Alaskan Salad with grilled salmon which was delicious. We had the fried okra and the spinach dip for appetizers and they were both very good. My son had the BBQ ribs and my other son had the fried chicken with greens and mashed potatoes. They were both very happy. The hand cut fries that came with the ribs were also crisp and fresh. The ambiance is a brewery vibe and the restaurant was clean and inviting. This was probably the best meal we had over the four days of the conference. We'll be back!

Yelp
Stopped in for my birthday dinner while passing through Atlanta. It's tough to find a steak and Manhattan place that also has something the kids would eat but Max Lager's had something for the whole family. Would definitely return. Service was quick and the food was delicious.

Yelp
Stopped in here on a Saturday evening for a quick bite just after getting off the road. Was seated right away & our server greeted us & offered to take our drink order. Ordered the chicken caesar salad & my sister got the BBQ ribs with fries & slaw. All was decent.

Yelp
I have not visited Max Lager's in years but I had a business lunch scheduled there this week and I am a happy to report the quality of the food was yet excellent. I had the Salmon BLT and it was outstanding! I am happy I decided to give it a try again.

Yelp
LOVE the ambiance! The brick/brewery decor is so cozy, especially in the evening. Maybe we were just starving, or maybe I'm remembering in retrospect, but the food was great! Huge portions- The max burger (got it without bacon) is a traditional burger, nothing super special about it, but it was good! The patty was huge. The grouper sandwich was also fine, could have used more of the basil mayo for flavor as it was a little bland but would definitely get it again. The smoked chicken collards are a bit spicy and didn't have much chicken in them (not sure if they're supposed to, I'm not from the south), and the cheese grits were delicious but a bit heavy on the butter. The side salads were coated in dressing, but a decent size portion as well. However, we waited forever for our food to come out, and it was impossible to get ahold of our waitress for the check. We were there for 2 ish hours for just the two of us. Nevertheless I would still return if I lived in the area! Definitely would recommend.

Yelp
Nice, relaxed atmosphere and good service. I had the Pesto Salmon and it was delicious. However, my friend had the filet mignon, and he said it was just okay. We shared a Wedge Salad which was great!
google avatar

Yelp
Good spot for dinner and a beer in the Atlanta area. The vibe is very comfortable and good for large or small groups. The service was great. Everything came out just as ordered. Pricing was what you'd expect for a higher end brewery/sports bar/lounge kind of place. Not the kind of spot I think about when I'm going to bed at night, but I would happily return without any complaints.
google avatar

Melissa K.

Yelp
The pizza was amazing!! We had a server that was a bit scattered but he pulled it out in the end! I would highly recommended the Margarita Pizza. I can't believe I didn't get a picture! There drinks are STRONG!
google avatar

Anthony D.

Yelp
They cost of the food is they put in your order you have to send it back because it cold and they didn't put on the thing you want on your pizza after the service say they will and running out when they putting it out

Yelp
Cool spot convenient to my downtown hotel. The beer selection was very nice. I was torn between the ribeye or the ribs so I ate here two nights in a row to try both. Both were delicious and very flavorful. The service is always great and all the staff friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Let's start with the good- the food was delicious! I had a pesto/ basil salmon served on cheesy grits and steamed broccoli. The broccoli was very well cooked, buttery, and seasoned great. Salmon was cooked medium and was tasty and tender. The cheesy grits were a little dry but did have good flavor. The Rustica pizza my kids ordered was loaded it's meat and cheeses. The dough was a little flimsy- could have cooked a bit longer in my opinion. And we had a wedge salad and burger- also very delicious! Now to the bad- customer service. Woah, where did it go?! I read other reviews and saw this was considered a nicer establishment, so I made my kids wear jeans (big shock for them!). We walked in and waited 6 minutes while not one, not two, but 3 servers walked past the hostess stand, and a bartender stood 5 feet away and no one stopped to seat us or even give us a "someone will be right with you". Finally a manager sat us. At least 5- 10 minutes again passed, with a server coming to a table next to us 3 times and not even acknowledging us, and 2 others cleaning tables in the room we were in. I should note here, there was 1 other table of 3 in the room we were in (off the bar), and maybe 2-4 tables in the rest of the dining room. So it was not busy. Finally a very nice woman came to our table with waters and apologized profusely for not getting there sooner and no one told her she had a table, and finally she saw and came over, etc excuses. We were all set to order as we'd had plenty of time to sit and think about it. We ordered drinks, food, and a salad. Took a while but our drinks and salad came out together after quite a while (again for not having many people in the whole restaurant). No silverware was even on the table or brought with this. So she had to go back for that. A minute later the food came out. We ate, drank, then sat before our server finally came back to check on us. Now we were the only table in the place (after the table of 3 behind us warned us to check the bill bc for some reason their card was charged 3 times for one entree!). I finally got up to go find our server who was in the back with 3 others just laughing and talking. The manager was standing next to the bar on her phone. Ok so here's the kicker...ready... When our server finally came back, apologizing again for the service and that they weren't paying attention to us, and excuses that she was putting out fires in back, she had the audacity to say to us "my manager said that IF you go and write us a good google review then I can give you 10% off your bill". I kid you not. I have never been bribed for reviews in exchange for a discount before!!! I honestly told her I avidly review on Yelp and that I'm sorry but I cannot do that as we had horrible customer service! If you've read it this far, I urge you to find other restaurants in Atlanta. There are plenty and I don't feel a place with the prices this place had deserves the business if they can't get their customer service figured out.
google avatar

Yelp
We had a great time at this restaurant. The outside seating area was very comfortable. The service was spot on. Loved the fire grilled pizzas. I haven't had squash on a pizza before, but I would totally do it again!

Yelp
My advice stay away from this place! First of all it's so hard to find a restaurant that had something all three members of my family wanted to eat and I looked on the menu this had it all. However this is the worst restaurant I ever been too. I came in and everyone who greeted me were so nice and charming. The ambiance and the smell of the food was amazing. BUT then there was our server.... When the host sat us he said that he was out of children's menus but we could look online to see it. I was fine with that no big deal. Our server came and asked if we were ready to order and I said no not yet I'm looking online for the children's menu. She asked me a bit gruffly what did you say churches menu. No children's menu. She said "what!" I'm looking online for the kids menu. Oh ok I can just tell it to you it's only three items. Ok great what is it. Perfect my daughter will have the cheese pizza. Does the children's come with a drink? She replied "No it does not" ok she will have water. "Does she want a lemonade it's free and if you guys want one let me know." I was thinking oh wow this is a really awesome joint gives out free lemonade. So I asked my daughter if she wanted a lemonade it's free and she said no and I asked her again it's free you sure you don't want a lemonade. Then the lady said "no the lemonade is not free! You have to pay for it and all the sodas!" Oh ok then no we don't want a lemonade, we'll just order her a cheese pizza. But we need some more time to look at the menu for ourselves can you put her pizza in now she's hungry. My husband and daughter also heard her say it was free lemonade. Few minutes she comes out and asked us "Are you ordering your kid a meal." And I replied yes the kids cheese pizza. She said "no are you ordering her, her own meal?" And I answered again yes a kids cheese pizza. Then she got really aggressive with me "THAT'S NOT WHAT I'M ASKING YOU! ARE YOU GOING TO ORDER HER, HER OWN MEAL?" I said I don't know what you mean by meal I don't have a kids menu and I don't appreciate you talking to me in that manner. I already said so many times I'm going to order my daughter the kids pizza. Then I almost start crying and we all get up and leave. I just wanted to have a nice meal with my family after a long 1.5 mile walk up a hill. I asked to talked to the manager but I couldn't stay and tell them what had happened because tears were in the corner of my eye from the harassment I received from this server. Sooooo..... I saw that I could order from the restaurant on door dash. Yay I can still get to try the food that smelled so amazing. Let me tell you I think it was a sign from heaven that I was not meant to try the restaurant and I should have listened. I ordered the fried okra and it came out one huge piece of fried garbage instead of individual pieces of okra. I tried to release one from the batch and at least taste it. It was hard as a rock and I almost broke my tooth. So salty and inedible. Also ordered the shrimp and grits so salty and the grits were so dry and thrown in like slop. Let me tell you I love salty food. But these were totally inedible. Forgot to take a picture of the shrimp and grits but here is the okra.

Yelp
We were staying at a nearby hotel and came for dinner. It was a great experience! The bartender was incredibly attentive and created a custom beer flight for me to try a few of their beers. They were all really good. Food was great too. I got an Asian salad - very large and flavorful. My husband got the shrimp and grits and said the shrimp were cooked perfectly. Service was fast and all the staff was so friendly. They even changed the channel at the bar so my husband could watch his favorite team! Would definitely recommend for dinner if you're in the area

Kurtis M.

Yelp
Good food good beer. Pizza is good. Fried chicken, collard greens, and cheese grits are great.

Jesus V.

Yelp
Had a great experience at Max's-the food was great and the brews excellent with friendly and attentive staff. Really cool building too. We had the chicken wings and they were perfectly done. The local brewery selection was great-tried the Shared Spirit IPA out of Athens, it was very good. Well done Max's.

Ana S.

Yelp
I'm sure this place can be good but for some reason our table was totally ignored. We ordered an appetizer that never appeared. Our food was way late. The wait staff apologized and comped us for our drinks, which was nice, but I would have preferred a dinner that I didn't have to wait an hour for.
google avatar

Barbara Babs T.

Yelp
Although we didn't eat here we had a great experience! We were greeted promptly with a smile and pleasant attitude by Peter. Decided to hit the upstairs bar since the outside was open and the big bay door was open to allow amazing breeze in. Julius was outstanding as was Eric and Peter! This is a gem in downtown. We will be back and eat the amazing smelling food!

Yelp
I just stoped in for a beer. Honestly, I was on my way somewhere else but the building looked so cool I decided to stop in. Nice ambiance. More restraint than bar. Nothing wrong with that but about 10 spots up at the bar top. Friendly staff was happy to offer a sample and help in beer selection. Menu looked good, I didn't grab food but steaks chops, etc. Also had some bar apps. It all looked pretty good. I just had a beer. Place was fine. I would go back.

Yelp
This place is a couple blocks away from the Olympic Rings, Centennial Park, Coca Cola Factory, Aquarium area. The setting was very fancy. There's lovely decor, the atmosphere is a bit dark with natural sunlight, and there's on-site beer brewing and you can see the actual wood fired grills. Highly recommend the buffalo chicken salad. It comes with a choice of ranch and blue cheese. The blue cheese is delicious!! The chicken is flavorful and crisp - a good amount of heat. And it's a gigantic portion size. The hot dog - while certainly all beef and flavorful was a bit smaller than expected.

Yelp
This is what you would consider you local brewery! They do run out of items so don't expecting to try everything to your hearts content, but they have some delicious beers that'll catch your eye. The Food was good... service was impeccable! Payton was awesome: gave great recommendations! Fried chicken, collard greens, and beer Mac and cheese were delish! I also ordered the chicken quesadillas and shrimp scampi! They have more than just basic bar food and the put a nice lil twist on their dishes. They have such a Cool ambience with authentic steel beer drums, and kegs! (I think that's what their called)... but I loved the decor! Oh and not to mention we went during "lunch time" and they were quick to get you in and out so if your in town on a lunch break this is the spot to go - several groups looked like the came for lunch !

Dequan M.

Yelp
Great food, great service, great atmosphere. Utilize street parking. Definitely will return.

Alejandro Z.

Yelp
The waiter was very knowledgeable of the dishes served and gave us some outstanding recommendations. We had the steak and it was cooked to perfection! The sparagus was crispy very well seasoned and the potatoes were perfectly made. For desert, we had the fried cheesecake. Only place I've heard of such a dish and I highly recommend it! You will not regret eating there. The house brewed beer went perfectly with the steak dinner. Will definitely come back to this restaurant!

La-Kesha S.

Yelp
The food was delicious. I'm a sucker for brick over pizza and the Marguerite did not disappoint. Definitely try the bourbon bread pudding to top off your evening.

Yelp
Great service and great food. Located in downtown Atlanta, I ate here twice while traveling and staying at the hotel next door. Each time, service was top-notch and welcoming. This place has a comfortable feel of a neighborhood pub and brewery where everyone gathers during dinner time. Get there early because it does fill up quickly. This restaurant brews its own beer in-house, and if you ask the right person, as we did about it, there's an interesting story behind the brewing process to tap. The food was always tasty and prepared as you requested, even if you wanted a substitution for something that normally comes with the meal. Come with an appetite because the portions are generous and prices are decent. I would recommend it.

Yelp
This place was close to our hotels so we tried it out. We ordered the appetizer mac & cheese and a chef salad. The salad was good and the Mac n cheese noodles were cooked perfect but needed more cheese on it. We're ordered the pepperoni pizza and it was delicious. Cooked perfectly and good flavor. We added our Mac n cheese to our pizza and it was even better.

Danielle G.

Yelp
Quan and Erik were awesome! Shon was amazing as well love it! We were a little rowdy but we had fun thanks for putting up with us!

John S.

Yelp
The PeachTree special might be the best chicken sandwich i've had. Perfect family-owned lunch spot- ask for Peyton at the bar.

Jen G.

Yelp
To the server who was too busy to give me a pen with my check because she was informing me that they prefer cash tips because they have to wait two weeks for them if put on the card, and then audibly sighed when i asked for that pen? That was inappropriate, not my problem, and negatively impacted your tip. Food (spinach artichoke dip, mac and cheese) both over-salted), broccoli should have had brown parts removed.

Yelp
I truly wanted to like this place. We came in twice actually as it was very close to our hotel. The first night they told us it would be two hours wait because they were understaffed. They sent us to a sister restaurant a couple blocks away, but the menu was totally different. We didn't find anything we liked. We ended up at Ray's in the city which I loved so it worked out. The following night I made a reservation and we showed up 10 minutes early. The same thing happened, they told us it would be a 40 minute wait (from the time of our reservation) even with a reservation!!! There was another group having the same situation. Because it was Saturday and it was quite cold, we decided to wait. At the 40 minute mark we asked about our table and we still had to wait another 10 minutes. I was beyond pissed at that point because it wasn't even space to sit down and wait. We were standing around by the front door, in the way of every customer and waiters. When we finally sat down we ordered a bottle of wine and some appetizers. For my entrée I had wood oven chicken and some mashed potatoes. It was OK everything was under seasoned. The wine was actually pretty good so that was something. We also had bread pudding for dessert which was quite delicious. Service was OK, the manager did come by to thank us for waiting and for giving them a chance, but other than that nothing special about this place. Decor is actually pretty cool. I wish service was better. Maybe it isn't the fault that they are understaffed but I as a customer feel that it isn't in my problem. Every other place we went to eat was amazing. I do know one place I would not be coming back if I ever come back to Atlanta.

Yelp
We went a couple of nights in a row. The service was outstanding! We would definitely come back again. It's a lot of food for each portion.

Brian C.

Yelp
Food is very solid. Had a burger and it was cooked very well. Only downside is they had limited beer on tap. I was in town for work and love to sample local brews. Walking distance from most downtown hotels.

M. Adam H.

Yelp
From the minute we walked in the door, the service was top notch. The host offered us a host of his favorite options. The server was equally helpful and honest about what to get (and avoid) on the menu. Steak was flavorful and cooked to perfection. You cannot get that wood-fired flavor in many places in the city. I considered asking the root beer to go home and start a family with me. There ambiance is relaxed but still feels sophisticated. It was great for a date, but it would work for any occasion.

Yelp
Some of the best food we ate in Atlanta. A wonderful gem that is a little outside of the main drags. It's worth making your way over and getting great food at a good price. Chris is one of the best servers ever. He is personable, entertaining, knowledgeable, friendly, and fun. The pork chops were amazing. I'm sad we waited until our last night to try Max Lager's place. It was right by our hotel and we went past it daily. I wish we had at least stopped by for a lunch. Great food and service. Stop on by and enjoy yourself at Max Lager's.

Yelp
Milan was our server and he was incredible, great energy & service! He was slammed during our CB Gen Blue Convention and still provided excellent service!! Food was delicious & the Cider beer is so good!!!

Yelp
Loved the building! Such a cool place inside. Food on the other hand was a massive disappointment. It was served cold, the potatoes had no flavor and it wasn't even enjoyable. The presentation was great but that's it. They were also slammed with a big party so service was a little slow. They did apologize as their normal cook was out. Not the best first time experience of southern food.

Yelp
Restaurant is a little dated, hence no 5 stars. But we had the best waiter! Forget his name :(. But he was super helpful and quick with refills without asking. Great salad options! I got the steak one. Burgers looked good too!
