The 21 Best Restaurants in San José, Costa Rica | Eater

"People come to Ricky Barthley’s shady, homey restaurant, located in the Santa Ana neighborhood, to watch sports and to order the rondon, a coconut-milk stew found all over the Caribbean, here consisting of fish or mixed seafood, cassava, taro, yams, plantains, and chile panameño. There’s lots of other delicious afro-Costa Rican and Caribbean seafood too, like Barthley’s chunky Costa Rican ceviche, shrimp fried rice with patacones, and mariscada stew with lobster, fish, and shrimp served with gallo pinto." - Bill Esparza

I enjoyed my meal, however, I have had better Jamaican food. The sauce was too strong in my meat and meat a bit dried out. I am thinking the meat was stewing too long and the flavor intensified? The rice and peas had a nice coconut flavor. Good tamarind drink and nice salad. Tasty free appetizer came after my meal was served. Service was super friendly and a great vibe with great music.

Fantastic jerk chicken, intensely flavored and the right amount of heat, super tender. and all sides were also great. Service was nice and the vibe was pretty, definitely 5/5.

Absolutely phenomenal! I had the rice and beans with Caribbean chicken, and it was nothing short of amazing. The flavors were bold, authentic, and perfectly balanced — every bite felt like a trip to the islands. The chicken was juicy and seasoned to perfection, and the rice and beans were the ideal complement. Cozy atmosphere, friendly service, and food that warms the soul. Maxi by Ricky is a hidden gem that deserves all the praise.

Very nice people and specially the owner. Unfortunately the food is cooked without salt or pepper so although the pictures and the food looks good. It had no taste. And the octopus was very very very tough. It was like mashing rubber. Such a shame. Hopefully we just had a bad chef that day and your experience will be better than ours.

Wow, what a delicious food! We tried many options on the menu and the taste of all of them were delicious 😋. Ricky is a wonderful and easygoing person and normally he is there to wave 👋 his customers and checking that everything is perfect. One of my must-to go places in Costa Rica

Very nice restaurant. I think the rondon (rundown) soup here was better than the ones I had on the Caribbean coast. The food was excellent here. Love the outdoor space and firepits they had. Highly recommend this place. One of better restaurants in all of San Jose. Slightly away from downtown so it's a bit of a drive or expensive taxi ride down but it is worth it.

Buena comida, pero muy alto el precio para el servicio y experiencia. Good food, but prices are too high for the service and experience they offer. In my opinion they can improve themselves or lower the prices, there are more options around in Santa Ana.
