The 21 Best Restaurants in San José, Costa Rica

"People come to Ricky Barthley’s shady, homey restaurant, located in the Santa Ana neighborhood, to watch sports and to order the rondon, a coconut-milk stew found all over the Caribbean, here consisting of fish or mixed seafood, cassava, taro, yams, plantains, and chile panameño. There’s lots of other delicious afro-Costa Rican and Caribbean seafood too, like Barthley’s chunky Costa Rican ceviche, shrimp fried rice with patacones, and mariscada stew with lobster, fish, and shrimp served with gallo pinto." - Bill Esparza

Very nice people and specially the owner. Unfortunately the food is cooked without salt or pepper so although the pictures and the food looks good. It had no taste. And the octopus was very very very tough. It was like mashing rubber. Such a shame. Hopefully we just had a bad chef that day and your experience will be better than ours.

Wow, what a delicious food! We tried many options on the menu and the taste of all of them were delicious 😋. Ricky is a wonderful and easygoing person and normally he is there to wave 👋 his customers and checking that everything is perfect. One of my must-to go places in Costa Rica

I just had a delivery from here. The chicken was very tender and delicious. The rice tasted like leftovers after 3 days. Not good. The carrot salad was ok. Plantains just ok... Didn't get to go in person.

Very nice restaurant. I think the rondon (rundown) soup here was better than the ones I had on the Caribbean coast. The food was excellent here. Love the outdoor space and firepits they had. Highly recommend this place. One of better restaurants in all of San Jose. Slightly away from downtown so it's a bit of a drive or expensive taxi ride down but it is worth it.

This is a great, chilled place to vibe and eat! Good food, nice portions and prices. The staff is so warm and welcoming. Our server William was very hospitable and entertaining. My wife had the oxtails, good portion, tender, flavorful and falling off the bone. I had the lobster (spiney) type. Very tasty and served with a nice pepper and onion sauce. The beef patties were good, flaky, and packed a lil punch. We have been living next door in Escazu, and just got familiar with this place. We will be back! What a great find!

My wife and I really enjoyed having lunch at Maxi. The seating outside was great, with a beach-like feeling and the service was great too, including a courtesy plate of patacones. We had a mixed chifrijo and a rice and beans with pork and it was incredible. Would definitely recommend it. Just be prepared to wait a bit as your food is prepared, but it's totally worth it.

Now I'm from the West Indies. I'm also from the United States. I must first say that I was culture shocked to come to Costa Rica and see the culture here. I found Maxi by Ricky. This is home infused with Costa Rica. It's West Indian dishes with a hint of Spanish cuisine. I love ceviche and this is the first time I had to feed you like this. I love rice and chicken but this was the first time I had it this way. The food was absolutely amazing and I recommend anybody that comes to Costa Rica to go to Maxi by Ricky especially if you're of West Indian descent. Easily five stars. Thank you Costa Rica for introducing me to this.

The people were very nice.. I just didn’t enjoy what I ordered that much and the food wasn’t very hot. The appetizer tasted good and the plantains were my favorite! Also, the lemonade was amazing!
