San Diego’s Best Filipino Restaurants - Eater San Diego

"Fried chicken headlines the menu at this Filipino chain, but it’s unlike the fried bird you may be familiar with. Max’s fried chicken is not breaded so you get flavorful crispy skin hiding succulent meat underneath. Don’t skip out the banana ketchup dipping sauce, either. Recommended sides include garlic fried rice plus sinigang, a hearty tamarind soup served with your choice of pork or shrimp." - Darlene Horn, Paolo Bicchieri

Large-Scale Filipino Restaurant and Event Space Launches in Miramar - Eater San Diego

"Local Filipino-American chef Tress Balch has just opened Sarap Filipino Kitchen, a 150-seat restaurant and event space in the Miramar area. Until recently, Balch ran Mira Mesa eatery and catering outfit Happy Sushi but has long been searching for a spot to serve traditional Filipino food, what he calls “grandma recipes”, in a large group-friendly venue that will soon offer live entertainment, from bands to comedians and karaoke. His partners include Scott Chiv, who previously ran a South African restaurant and a diner in the Miramar location, as well as Blessie Trott, with consulting help from chef Marlaw Seraspi; formerly executive chef at Open House in Encinitas, Seraspi ran a popular Filipino-influenced Sunday brunch that he may resurrect in Miramar and Balch and Seraspi were among the cadre of local chefs behind the legendary Ulam dinner this past spring. Sarap Filipino Kitchen’s initial menu includes classic pancit noodles, hand-rolled lumpia that will be available in party trays, crispy lechon kawaii, and afritada, a tomato-based chicken stew. The full menu, rolling out soon, will include more of the comforting dishes that are Balch’s speciality, ranging from bicol express, made with pork and creamy coconut milk, to kare kare, and Filipino sweets including halo-halo and leche flan. The restaurant will also offer late night eats on weekends as well as occasional kamayan feasts, multi-dish communal dinners that are eaten with your hands. The restaurant also offers draft beer and wine." - Candice Woo

The food was well prepared and delicious. We had the classic Sisig, Bualo, pork skewers, Bangus (Milk Fish), and rice. The restaurant has plenty of seating and seems to be popular. I have not had any problems with any of their locations and highly recommend this location in San Diego.

The food was great even if it’s a little pricy honestly. I would still come again regardless. The service was good on a Monday night. The waitress showed us our table, took our order, and the kitchen staff delivered the food. Honestly, this was also the nicest Max’s I’ve been to compared to the ones in Hawaii. Also, the Halo Halo was huge and it tasted really goo!. Overall, yeah, you can get cheaper Filipino food elsewhere, but this is the best in terms of a restaurant atmosphere.

I've been to Max's in South San Francisco, Glendale, Nre Jersey, and Chula Vista and by far this place has the best chicken ever! Our server is very pleasant and friendly. Just Fabulous!

There are so many good things in the menu so it was hard to decide. It is my second time here so I ordered what I haven't tried. My friend and I decided to order the Pansit Palabok, Kare-Kare, Lumpia, Beef Caldereta and of course the dessert, Halo-Halo. We are very happy with our choices. Each one is delicious. The beef was very tender and tasted homemade. The curry sauce was creamy and full of flavor. The Palabok is the best I had. I am excited to go back and try the other items. They were short staff that day but the servers were very pleasant and nice and were able to keep up with all the patrons. They surely tried their best.

Had a great experience dining here. My wife was interested to see how the franchises here compared to the Max's in the Philippines, and it is very close. The prices are definitely on the high side, especially when you can get some of the same dishes at various Filipino turo turo (food already out on chafing dishes and you can select from the dishes already made), but it's made up for in the quality from what we tasted. For instance, the lumpia was filled with meat and minced carrots and garlic and the wrapper wasn't thick, so you could taste the fillings more than in some other restaurants. The kare kare was very creamy and you could really taste the peanut base. The pork barbeque sticks were also very juicy. So while the price is a bit high, you are paying for the quality of something made to order versus something that is out on a warmer. The service was also very friendly, and the food came out fairly quickly. The restaurant was also very clean, as were the restrooms when we went. While not someplace that we would eat often at due to the price, it is definitely a place we are coming back to as there are more dishes we are looking forward to trying.

Overall good food - we had the taro leaves, a half chicken, pork belly sisig, and pancit. Everything came out fresh and hot. The fruit juices were good - especially the coconut. Definitely on the more expensive side, but a fairly enjoyable experience. If I were recommending a place for Filipino I wouldn't choose Max's first but we enjoyed our meal and I would eat there again.

Wow! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! Very impressed with how delicious the food is! Worth every penny! Service is amazing as well! There was only one server managing and serving all customers who were dining in and out and she did soooo fast, efficient and great! Still had a big smile on her face checking every table. Miss Jenny, our server was so sweet, hospitable and kind. Even though she was our only server for the day, she was quick and made sure we had what we needed. Our food out hot, sizzling and FAST. I’ve never had a service that fast and efficient. Kudos to Miss Jenny for being so hardworking and incredibly welcoming. She kept checking on us even if there were a lot of customers and tables to be served. Price is a bit pricey but hey normal California price you so honestly it’s not bad at all, it’s worth every penny for every bite. We preferred bangus sisig, pork sisig with egg, garlic rice, calamansi juice, mango juice and halo halo. They all tasted so good and so delicious. I’m very impressed and I’m planning to go back again. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I hope we have the same one in Arizona, it’s a very far drive for us but we stopped by here for a vacay. Thank you Jenny and Max’s Restaurant!.

This is the most regretful food I have ever gotten for Mother's Day. I ordered the bundle worth $106 and I added pork sisig crab meat fried rice. Each and every food in the bundle are not good at all. Tasteless like there's no seasoning. The pork sisig came soggy that looks like vomit. The crab meat fried rice had a really bad after taste. The whole fried chicken is so small and tiny that only 2 people can share. All portions of all the food are so small that can only feed 1 or 2 people. The experience picking up the food was disappointing. Staff are not very helpful and rude. They talk very unprofessional as well. My family of 5 ended up throwing most of the food away because they really tasted bad. I don't like wasting food but i would not even want to give it away because it is so disappointing. I spent $152 and food just turned to waste. Service was awful. I called to let them Know that I can bring all the food back and if they issue me a refund just so I can use the money to get other food that's worth the portion and taste but they refused. I was willing to drive 20 minutes back to bring all the food back but they are unhelpful and refused to listen to customers needs. I will never go back and I will tell my friends and family to not waste their money getting food at Max restaurant.
