"Fried chicken headlines the menu at this Filipino chain, but it’s unlike the fried bird you may be familiar with. Max’s fried chicken is not breaded so you get flavorful crispy skin hiding succulent meat underneath. Don’t skip out the banana ketchup dipping sauce, either. Recommended sides include garlic fried rice plus sinigang, a hearty tamarind soup served with your choice of pork or shrimp." - Darlene Horn, Paolo Bicchieri

"Local Filipino-American chef Tress Balch has just opened Sarap Filipino Kitchen, a 150-seat restaurant and event space in the Miramar area. Until recently, Balch ran Mira Mesa eatery and catering outfit Happy Sushi but has long been searching for a spot to serve traditional Filipino food, what he calls “grandma recipes”, in a large group-friendly venue that will soon offer live entertainment, from bands to comedians and karaoke. His partners include Scott Chiv, who previously ran a South African restaurant and a diner in the Miramar location, as well as Blessie Trott, with consulting help from chef Marlaw Seraspi; formerly executive chef at Open House in Encinitas, Seraspi ran a popular Filipino-influenced Sunday brunch that he may resurrect in Miramar and Balch and Seraspi were among the cadre of local chefs behind the legendary Ulam dinner this past spring. Sarap Filipino Kitchen’s initial menu includes classic pancit noodles, hand-rolled lumpia that will be available in party trays, crispy lechon kawaii, and afritada, a tomato-based chicken stew. The full menu, rolling out soon, will include more of the comforting dishes that are Balch’s speciality, ranging from bicol express, made with pork and creamy coconut milk, to kare kare, and Filipino sweets including halo-halo and leche flan. The restaurant will also offer late night eats on weekends as well as occasional kamayan feasts, multi-dish communal dinners that are eaten with your hands. The restaurant also offers draft beer and wine." - Candice Woo

Overall good food - we had the taro leaves, a half chicken, pork belly sisig, and pancit. Everything came out fresh and hot. The fruit juices were good - especially the coconut. Definitely on the more expensive side, but a fairly enjoyable experience. If I were recommending a place for Filipino I wouldn't choose Max's first but we enjoyed our meal and I would eat there again.

We ordered the fried chicken (whole) to go. They have a small waiting area separate from the dining area. The chicken was moist, a bit salty but tasty.

When trying to compare Max's to other places in San Diego, it's a hard 0 on the food. At the same time, if you compare the food to other filipino cuisine that you would actually get in the Philippines, it's not terrible. It's a sad reality when coming to a place that charges you premium dollars to push out, lack of a better word... garbage. At first appearance, the restaurant seemed clean and in proper order. When actually taking a deeper look, Cobb webbs in the corners and the rafters above their host desk looks like it hasn't been cleaned in months. Also along the railing by the booths. Over all this place is a stay clear away from it if you have any type of food background and aren't filipino. If you are Filipino this is a spot where you can spend a lot of money and get the same portion as the Philippines, but at 10x the price And why even put fries on the plate if your going to give only 7 pieces. I get food cost, but that makes you look silly

Fried chicken absolutely flavorful. Good and fast service. I am not that amazed with their pork sisig. Dont forget to order their Halo-halo huge serving.

Visited on a Sunday for brunch. Wait time is fast and easy with the automated check-in upon arrival. First point of contact with our server felt pressured as she was taking our orders for drinks she just gave the option of their fruit juices (buko, etc) almost insisting we order them. Heads up they are not included with your meal, just another bolt-on that servers do. All we wanted was water to wash everything down on a warm day while cutting back on sugary drinks. Water refills came slowly but the food was delicious, flavorful and served fresh. The only issue is that the dishes do not come out together. Since we like to pray and give thanks for our gifts, we waited until we received everything from thy bounty even though the other dishes started to get cold. Also, the tables are a little too close together as well where you feel like the party next to you is part of yours. Observing that they are short staffed, the service and smiles should remain consistent and always courteous especially at an “upper scale” style Filipino restaurant. Even the smaller turo-turo’s are always smiling and greeting you as soon as you walk in the door. Again, the food was great, crispy pata and whole fried chicken were crisp not dry. The kare-kare actually had oxtail and their sisig is pretty authentic. They just need a minor adjustment on the service side since we Filipino’s are known for great hospitality and warm and friendly service which was not extended so generously during our visit.

This was our first time here. We normally go to the one on Flamingo Rd in Las Vegas. All was good except that they didn’t serve BBQ on the stick? Minor thing. Jenny was super great, though she had forgotten to ask or refill our drinks, so we had to keep calling her for refills. However, she handled it all well and was sweet about it all and most of all, being respectful! The cool thing they have that Max Las Vegas needs is their sign in Kiosk!!! In Vegas, they lost track of who was next.

❤️🇵🇭 I'm thrilled to add this Max’s Restaurant location in San Diego to my regular dining spots. Its service, ambiance, and food are absolutely top-notch, just like what I experienced at their Chula Vista location. For those yet to experience Filipino cuisine, don’t miss out. Try it out today! I particularly appreciate how their meals aren’t overly greasy or fried, a contrast to many Chinese dishes. It’s a healthier, more satisfying dining experience. Moreover, this is a locally-owned business in Mira Mesa, not a corporate chain. Supporting local San Diego entrepreneurs feels great! Having dined at two Max’s Restaurant locations in San Diego, I can confidently say that they maintain a high standard across their outlets. ☑️ Order now on their website or dine-in 🙌

We made it to Max's San Diego before going to Seaworld. We enjoy the good food and the staff quick service. The food was great and I can't wait for the Bakersfield location to open soon. Love Max's!
