I stumbled on the coolest pizza in south Florida and all I am still excited about it. After an afternoon walking around the nearby Deering estate I was looking for a bite to eat and maybe a sweet treat. A mere six minutes later and I was this haven of deliciousness.
Contrary to the name and even the window display, Maxwell Bros. Clothing Store is not a clothing store at all, it's a a pizza and beer restaurant (although they do sell a couple of souvenir t-shirts). In 1866 after the Civil War, Robert Maxwell opened what would become the oldest family-owned clothing store in the United States. Four generations and 14 decades later, Roberts great-great-great grandson, Todd Maxwell along with his business partner Lincoln's Beard Brewery owner John Falco, are paying homage to Robert with this hand-crafted beer and pizza restaurant.
Opened just last year, this place checks all my boxes with its history, quirky decor, and amazing pizza. The dining room has a large bar where you can order and eat or choose one of the dining tables inside or under the pergola outside. In the rear of the restaurant is a vintage living room and a wall that celebrates the history of the Maxwell family.
The Maxwell menu features small bites, salads, and handmade pizzas along with 10 taps of beer which they brew on site or at their brewery. I ordered a $12.50 Margherita pizza crafted with house sauce, mozzarella, basil, and olio. Other pizzas include Fungus Among Us, Caprese, and Surfin USA. My pizza was fired up in Herbie, the custom-made and tile decorated pizza oven. It was a simple pizza made great by the fresh ingredients and delicious sauce. It had the delicious coal charred crust which turns your fingers black. I'm already kicking myself for not taking a pizza Bianaca made with mozzarella, roasted garlic cloves, caramelized onion, sesame-studded crust, and parmesan with me too so I am definitely coming back. Oh and don't forget getting ice cream for dessert and the amazing Cry-Baby next door.
