Visiting Maxwells has become something of a tradition. Having a slightly fussy eater of a cousin, we brought him here on our first trip to London with him about 8 or so years ago (when it was located around the corner). He enjoyed it so much (what teenage boy doesn't enjoy chicken wings, steak, and fries?) That it has become a yearly tradition on night one of his birthday trip.
We always have a decent experience, with good food quality, friendly staff, and a vibrant atmosphere.
Its quite dark and noisy inside but that's the vibe they're going for. I mention it so that people looking to have long, private conversations are aware!
There were three of us, the boy had wings to start with steak and fries as his main. We shared nachos, with me having fajitas as my main and the other guest having the taco salad. All good quality, hot and served fairly quickly.
I enjoyed my meal, found the portion size fair for the price and filling. The salad was good, and large. The teenager enjoyed his steak although found having the butter on top at such a high quantity a little off putting and he ended up scraping it off.
He finished on a massive sundae that I figured he wouldn't eat but teenager boys are bottomless pits and he demolished that too.
A couple of things: Maxwells is right smack in Covent Garden and its prices reflect that. It is easy to get to, right around from Covent Garden station or a short walk from Leicester Square. Also walkable from Trafalgar Square, Charing Cross and, though slightly longer, Tottenham Court Road, Holborn etc. It is easy to find, over two floors (although toilets are down another flight of stairs in a basement so worth bearing that in mind) and there is also bar seating.
I feel, as I always do, that I should mention the 12.5% service charge
charge. This is common practice in London (and spreading) but, as always, I urge people to ask for this to be removed and tip only if you think your experience warrants it. We did, and did leave a cash tip. Even so, and if you've read my other reviews you will be aware of my disdain for service charges, I believe if we all refuse to pay them it will eventually prompt owners to rethink this as a process. Just to remind people that in the UK there is a national living wage and whilst we may or may not think this is sufficient it is the employers role to ensure their staff are appropriately paid. Tipping in UK and across Europe has always been based on quality and should remain so.
